Our Story
The roots of SPD go back to the late 50’s and the booming
Hot Rod industry in the Los Angeles area. Jim Hill was a
schooled engineer studying Mechanical Engineering at Cal
Poly-San Luis Obispo. In 1959, after marrying his wife Peggy,
and settling in Van Nuys, CA, Jim began work in the exhaust
industry installing mufflers & exhaust systems for Sepulveda
Muffler in the San Fernando Valley.
In 1963, Jim opened Exhaust Engineering and began
designing & building custom headers & exhaust systems for
racers and enthusiasts in the area.
The business was a success and
helped him further his trade.
From late 1966 thru much of
1968, Jim worked for Tom Patterson
Enterprises (of Patterson Oil Tanks)
and Nelson Tyler Enterprises. While
working with Nelson Tyler, Jim was
involved in the “Rocket Belt” project,
as flown in the opening ceremony of
the 1984 LA Olympics. He was also
involved in the construction of the
first passenger cradle on a Helium
blimp & aerial camera mounts used
on helicopters to film any event from
the air. Jim was very proud of his
involvement in helping pioneer these
now commonplace tools of today’s
movie & sporting events.
In late 1968, Jim was offered
a job managing a new division of
Cragar Industries called Saber
Founder
Manufacturing. Saber Mfg. was the
subsidiary that manufactured the
old “Cragar Hotpipes”. He successfully managed Saber and
enjoyed the constant weekend trips to the races while working
for Cragar and learning all he could about the exhaust industry.
In 1973, after tiring of the commute from Van Nuys to Long
Beach each day for nearly 5 years, Jim took a job in Northridge,
CA with Torque Engineering. Torque was a motorcycle exhaust
manufacturing company. Twenty minutes from home each way,
Jim enjoyed his new job and would successfully manage the
manufacturing side of Torque Engineering until his big move
north.
In 1976, Jim and his complete family moved to the
Sacramento area. Although SPD had begun as a moonlight
business in 1969, Jim decided to continue with the name
Specialty Products Design and renewed his self employment
journey again. The business would continue to grow thru his
hard work and perseverance. Later came the addition of Jim’s
son Chris who would become a partner in the business. The
two would establish a reputation in the area as the place to go if
you wanted it done right.
Over many years, SPD has designed and built components and
complete exhaust systems for all forms of motorsports. (cars,
boats, motorcycles, even airplanes). The family’s continued
involvement in racing has helped keep them up to speed with
the rapidly evolving technology.
In 1992, after considerable thought, SPD embarked on a
manufacturing course. The investment in equipment, tooling
and personnel were only the beginning of what is today’s result;
a successful small manufacturing company.
The company has progressed from a regional, to national,
and what is now an international supplier of specialty exhaust
components. Through it all, the company has remained family
owned and focused on the goal of providing quality products
and services. SPD continues to grow, keeping a pace that will
not jeopardize the standard of quality
and service that our customers have
become accustomed to.
In 1999, SPD was incorporated
and the leadership roll in the
company passed to son Chris.
Jim enjoyed all forms of
motorsports but, it only took one
trip in 1957 to fall in love with the
Bonneville Salt Flats. In 1982, Jim
& Chris began building Land Speed
cars to compete at SCTA/BNI &
USFRA events. The duo would go on
to establish 4 world speed records
in several classes and a land speed
record of 307.797 mph in their V6
Buick powered Hill & Hill streamliner.
They would eventually push the car to
a one way top speed of 331 mph.
Jim made his last trip to Bonneville
in August of 2006. Unfortunately, it
1936-2006 was after his death on June 28th. But,
he did get a ride at near 200 mph in
the SPD 1929 4 wheel drive roadster he had originally designed
& built.
Jim had been battling complications of diabetes and heart
disease for years but it wasn’t enough to keep him away from
doing what he loved. He worked till near closing that Tuesday
before his passing and shocked us all when he didn’t wake that
next morning.
Jim Hill
He is and will always be sorely missed.
He was my Father, my partner & my friend.

Header & Exhaust Systems
Getting Everything You Can (Out Of It)
The exhaust systems role in increasing engine performance centers around improving volumetric efficiency. Volumetric
efficiency (VE) refers to the ability of an engine to intake and expel gases (i.e.: air/fuel and exhaust gas), in relation to the
actual pumping volume of the engine. Free flowing intake and exhaust systems help an engine to achieve this. Achieving
greater than 100% VE is done in part by optimizing exhaust gas scavenging to draw out exhaust and bring in air fuel mixture
during valve overlap. As the piston reaches the top of the exhaust stroke, it dwells as the crankshaft sweeps across the top
of its stroke. This is where valve overlap occurs. Before the piston reaches Top Dead Center, the intake valve begins to
open. The trick is to design the exhaust system so that the exhaust pulse (pressure wave) leaves behind a pressure drop
or vacuum to take advantage of the valve overlap. If successful the combustion chamber will exchange residual exhaust
gases for a fresh air/fuel mixture before the piston has any real effect on the intake charge.
To design a successful exhaust system or tuned header, the tube size and length are selected based on a list of engine
specifications and application characteristics. The tube size controls the speed of the exhaust pulse, too big and the velocity
(energy) is lost. The tube length is all about timing the pulse to synchronize with the cam in a specific RPM range.
At the collector, the timing of the pulses is crucial to scavenging. Imagine a four lane freeway on ramp merging into one
lane. If you get the timing and speed right, the pulses draft each other like stock cars at Daytona, increasing their speed.
This is where the Merge Collector comes in. It makes that transition from primary tube to exhaust pipe as smooth as
possible. This reduction in turbulence helps maintain velocity through the collector, thus increasing the scavenging power
of the header system.
If you are not sure of your header and collector design, please fill out the
vehicle specification sheet available online and send it to us.
Merge Collectors
Cut-A-Way Views
Merge Collectors have been used for many years in F1 and Indy cars. The technology has trickled down into almost all
forms of professional racing. Today they have become common place and in competition, merge collectors are used
wherever rule books allow.
On pages 3 through 15 you will find information on merge collectors to help you decide what type is for you. If you need
more help give us a call or fill out the vehicle specification sheet available online.

(MC) Merge Collector
The traditional merge collector can be used as a removable
piece or welded. Pre-bent tubes are machine cut and hand
fit to form a pyramid inside each collector for proper airflow
management.
(DSMC) Double Slip Merge Collector
DSMC’s are used primarily in turbo applications where the
benefits of a true merge are needed and a removable collector
offers the best design solution. The double slip receivers
provide the extra seal necessary to prevent the loss of exhaust
manifold pressure.
(WMC) Weld-On Merge Collector
WMC's are primarily used in turbo applications where space constraints are
the biggest concern. The WMC’s form is like that of a formed collector but, is
constructed like a merge collector to provide the material strength necessary
to withstand the stresses of a turbo application. WMC’s also allow for the
use of a smaller outlet size than is possible with a formed collector.
(FMC) Flat Merge Collector
This FMC style collector allows for maximum
ground clearance. Applications include street rods
and transverse mounted inline 4 cylinders and flat
opposed 4 or 6 cylinders.
(BMC) Bent Merge Collector
Building a tuned header in a confined space can present some
real challenges. The BMC is designed to help solve some of
those problems that can arise when building a Tri-Y system.
Rather than compromise tube length, this part allows you to place
the primary or secondary 2 way collector while changing direction.

Standard Merge Collectors (MC)
Merge Collectors are a common choice of professional engine builders and race teams. Pre-bent tubes are machine cut
and hand fit to form a pyramid inside each collector. Merge Collectors are TIG welded to ensure professional performance
and appearance. SPD Merge Collectors are cleaned and polished inside for maximum flow.

Tube Sizes from 1.25" to 3.50"
We stock unfinished collectors and collector bends from 1.25" to 3.50" OD. This
allows us to ship the same day or within 48 hours in most cases. 4 into 1 collectors
from 1.25" to 2.75" are standard items.
We stock 2.75" 4 into 1 collectors ▲
Number of Tubes
Merge Collectors can be ordered to collect as many as 6 or 8 header primaries, although
we usually don't recommend this practice for competition engines. Two, three, four, and
five into one collectors are better at preserving the velocity of the exhaust pulse as it
transitions from the header primary to the secondary exhaust. Every tube added to the
collector requires an increase in the outlet size. With a larger outlet the exhaust pulse
will become defused, losing some of its velocity and reducing the scavenging effect of
the header. The relatively small minor diameter of a 2 into 1 collector maintains the
focus and laminar flow of the exhaust pulse. This is one of the reasons 4 - 2 -1 or Tri-Y
headers are effective.
Outlet Size (Minor Diameter)
Our merge collector part numbers have no reference to an outlet size. You will be asked for
the desired outlet size when you place your order.
For naturally aspirated engines, the idea is to reduce the minor diameter to the point just
before it produces a negative effect on peak power. This produces the broadest power band.
The relationship between the inlet and outlet size is based on the frequency of the exhaust
pulses. Compared to a stock Honda 4 cyl's peak RPM of 6800, the exhaust pulse frequency
of a F1 V8 @ 18,000 is nearly 6 times greater. For this example the Honda may only require a
minor diameter two sizes larger than the primary size and the F1 car would have no restriction.
In the case of blown or nitrous oxide injected engines the objective is to have little or no restriction.
Unfinished Outlet ►
◄ Finished Outlet
4 into 1 Min / Max Outlet Size (Minor Diameter)
Minimum outlet size is typically one tube size larger than the inlet size.
15, 20, & 25 degree collectors can be ordered with outlets the same size as the inlet (example 15200-4-30418 with 2.00" outlet).
Maximum outlet size is typically less than 2 times tube inlet size.
12 degree convergent angle required for maximum outlet size (example 12263-4-30418 with 5.00" outlet).

Double Slip Merge Collectors (DSMC)
Double Slip Merge Collectors are used primarily in turbo applications where a removable collector offers the best design
solution. The double slip receivers provide additional inlet sealing, helping to prevent the loss of exhaust manifold pressure.
This eliminates the need to weld the collector to the header primaries. The double slip arrangement also allows for a
minimal amount of torsional movement during operation of the engine. All of these features reduce the potential for failure
under the extreme temperature swings seen in turbo headers.

Tri-Y (Slip Together)
Tri-Y header designs started as a way to build
torque in a simple truck and RV header. In
recent years, it has been tried in some of the
most unlikely racing vehicles and proven
to be an effective design for almost any
naturally aspirated application. The benefit
is a broader power curve, producing more average
horsepower over a given RPM range, resulting in lower
elapsed times. With enough research and development
a Tri-Y header can reach this goal without sacrificing horsepower
compared to a 4 into 1 design. For many applications, the costs out
weigh the benefits. For some, like a Bonneville racecar, any loss of peak
power is too much. We typically recommend Tri-Y’s for road racing, off-road
trucks, and circle track cars. All of these vehicles are relatively heavy and require a
wide usable RPM range.
Designing a Tri-Y header for a competition engine is not something to take lightly. As previously
mentioned, if you are starting from scratch it may take a bit of R&D to design the ideal Tri-Y. There are
more variables then you have designing a 4 into 1 system. Choosing the wrong size or length can be more detrimental. We
have a lot of experience with Tri-Y’s and may be able to guide you in the right direction or suggest a design for a common
engine combination.
The assemblies shown below and on the next page are ordered as a collection of parts to be incorporated into a new
header, not as a bolt on upgrade. We can build the sub-assemblies or a complete fabricated unit as in the case of a welded
Tri-Y, but we will need more information that just the inlet and (final) outlet sizes.

Welded Tri-Y headers offer the same benefits as
the slip-together but without the adjustability. Once
you have settled on a design, a welded Tri-Y can be
built to the same specifications as a slip together.
The advantage is reduction in weight and/or space.
This makes it a good choice for applications such
as midgets and motorcycles as these are huge
concerns.

Balanced
Balanced Exhaust
Exhaust
Most naturally aspirated engines with dual exhaust will benefit from some method of pressure balancing.
V8's in particular have an unbalanced firing order, such as the sequential firing of cylinders 5 & 7 on a stock
Chevrolet engine. This is what gives a true dual exhaust system its signature rhythm. The uneven back pressure
will disrupt the scavenging pulses utilized in tuned exhaust systems. There are several design strategies
employed to rectify this problem; 180 degree headers, 2 into 1 merges, H-Pipes, Crossovers / X-Pipes.
Merge X Crossover (MXC)
SPD 's most popular crossovers are made from 1 D (1 x Diameter.) Radius 90 degree bends.
This compact configuration is ideal for most V type engines. The bends are welded together around a common
port. This helps to equalize the pressure between the left and right banks of an exhaust system without sacrificing
volume. A stiffener plate is added to each side to help support the weld around the merge.

Weld-On Merge Collectors (WMC)
WMC’s start life as a Merge Collector with a specific
centerline spacing. The bends used are one tube size
larger than the primary tubes on your application, allowing
them to seat just inside the collector (about .18" - .25" deep).
After assembly, the straight section is removed as well as
the center pyramid.

Welded Collector (Unfinished)
Overall Length - WMC vs MC
25 degree 2.00" w/ 3.00 outlet
A Shorter Length is the biggest advantage of a Weld-On Merge
Collector. Compared to a standard Merge Collector (see example right)
the WMC is much shorter, making it easier to package in the confined
space of the typical turbo charged vehicle.
Customized - Unlike stamped / formed collectors that have to be
retooled to change their shape, WMC's can be custom tailored to fit your
design parameters with different convergent angles, outlet sizes, and
inlet centerlines.
Standard Merge
Weld-on Merge
Material - When ordering WMC's you can chose from three different
material types: 1008 Mild Steel, 304 stainless or 321 stainless steel
Weld-On Merge Installation
Square header primary tubes
• A hose clamp can be used to
constrain the tubes.
Tack star into center of tubes
• Tack a few spots and test fit the
collector.
• "Slip-on" & "Turbo Style" collectors
will need shims to maintain centerline
spacing of tubes.
Check collector fit at each step.
14 ph. 888-778-3312
Weld star and valley
• Fully weld star and butted tube
ends.
• Continue the weld 3/8" - 1/2" down
the valley between each pair of tubes
• Test fit collector and add additional
beads of weld to minimize gaps
between valley and collector.

Formed Collectors ►
Turbo Style WMC’s are built with a
slightly wider centerline. This leaves a gap
between each of the header pipes allowing
for expansion. Use shims to maintain this
spacing when welding the collected header
tubes together.

SWMC (Slip-On Weld-On Merge Collectors)
We now offer WMC’s with swedged slip-over
tubes on the inlet. These collectors allow
for the largest possible outlet sizes on our
shortest collectors.

Weld-On Merge Installation (continued)
Add bullet vanes (optional)
• Vanes removed from merge are
included with WMC (4, 5 & 6 -1 only).
Fit and weld collector
• Square collector on primary tubes.
• Tack collector at multiple points to maintain position while welding.
• Weld entire circumference of collector to header primary.
• Use a flash light if necessary to check for leaks.

Formed Collectors
Formed collectors are an economical
way to collect header primary tubes
together. This Weld-On style is the
most common of all header collectors
still used today.

SPD Slip-On formed collectors utilize
swedged slips (shown above) to provide a

to seal against.
(Available in Stainless Steel by Special Order)
These collectors are formed from rolled and seam
welded sheet metal. This process allows for smaller
outlet sizes than are possible using tubing.

At SPD, we start with the highest quality tubing available for automotive exhaust,
CREW-AKDQ carbon steel and 304 stainless steel - A269 specification.
(see pages 28-29 for more information). This material comes from the most
reputable sources in North America. Sizes 1.25" through 3.00" are all bent in house
by our experienced staff, on one of our two mandrel benders using well maintained
tooling. This insures consistency in the products we offer to our customers.
Because of this consistency in our materials and process, I like to say "We know
what our bends will look like before we bend them". We are confident you will be
satisfied with the quality of the product you receive. You can be confident that on
your following orders, you'll know what the parts will look like before they arrive.

1008 is an ASTM grade of carbon steel.
Composition is 99% iron alloyed with manganese
and carbon. It is characterized as having excellent
surface finish and formability.
To provide our customers the highest quality bends
most of the mild steel tubing we stock is made by the
following processes:
Cold Rolled Electric Welded or (CREW)
Aluminum Killed Drawing Quality or (AKDQ)
The aluminum is used to remove oxygen while the steel is
in a molten state. The resulting steel is more uniform, less
prone to corrosion, and easier to form (draw).
Flash Controlled - Flash refers to the raised seam of
the weld running the length of the inside of the tube.
Flash Controlled tubing has that seam reduced to less
than .010".
304 is the most common grade of 18/8 stainless
steel. The 18 & 8 refer to the percentage of
chromium and nickel respectively. The chromium
forms protective oxide layer on the surface of the
material, which is why it is characterized as “stainless
or corrosion resistant. This property is not just skin
deep as with coated metals. It has excellent forming
and welding characteristics and can be polished to
a mirror finish. All these properties have made it the
preferred material for all kinds of fabrication.
A269 Specifies the requirements of an annealing or
heat treating process referred to as "bright annealed"
meaning that it is free from scale. On its journey from
ingot to tube the material is work hardened and overheated
from welding. The treatment restores the material to its
original grain structure, reversing the adverse effects
of the manufacturing process. The resulting material
will withstand more elongation during forming / drawing
procedures.

stabilizer to extend its heat range and improve its
already excellent weldability.
2.625”
At temperatures above 800°F / 425°C. 304L
is susceptible to carbide precipitation, causing
intergranular corrosion. This physical change in the
material allows it to oxidize and can lead to structural
failure.
In 321 the small amount of Titanium added (0.70%
max.) maintains its bond with the chromium, keeping
it from sweating out at these high temperatures. This
is what makes it a great choice for turbo applications,
rotary engines, endurance racing, and why it is
mandated by the FAA for production aircraft exhaust.
Although the steel industry recommends 321 for
applications up to 1650°F / 900°C, we have seen
reasonable service life from applications that exceed
that temperature range.
4.00”
347 filler rod is recommended for this material.
It has a similar composition but uses Niobium as the
stabilizer.

About Our CNC Machined Flanges
Our "one of a kind" approach to manufacturing header flanges started small in response to the growing availability of
aftermarket heads with unique ports and / or bolt patterns. With this change in the industry, it became clear that if we
were going to build headers that maximized the performance of racing engines, we would first need header flanges
specific to those cylinder heads. We are not the only company using CNC machining to produce header flanges, but we
are certain that no one else offers more applications than SPD.
 Machined
Stamped
Laser & Water Jet
• Precise fit
• Clean attractive finish
• Ready to use. No Burrs, No grinding
• Tolerances are harder to hold.
• Process typically makes holes that are
wider on the back side due to refraction.
Stamped flanges on the other hand
are too thin and curled to use when
building a quality header
.

(1)
Port Shapes
Round ports are machined .020”-.030”over advertised size.
Other shapes are as much as .070” over nominal tube size to allow for easier tube shaping.
(2)
Rectangle - Longer or taller than wide or high.
Round - For stock round ports or oversized tube applications.
(3)
D-Port - Typically flat floor and sides with radius on roof of port.
(4)
Oval - Two sides half round. Horizontal and vertical oval.
Square Oval - Made popular by the 18° Chevy, has radiused roof and floor.
(5)
SAP - “Same As Port” - Flange closely matches port shape in cylinder head.
(6)
Square - Nearly equal height and width with varied corner radius.
(7)
Counterbored - To accommodate oversized tubing some flanges have a .150” deep machined step.

Verifying the Fit of Your Header Flanges
"I need a header flange for a Big Block Chevy"
It sounds simple enough, but the variety of cylinder heads available for some applications is incredible.
Here is an extreme example - BRODIX offers 21 different models of their Big Brodie heads (see table below).
That is just one of six styles of heads offered by one manufacturer.

Most of these heads have unique exhaust ports.
The different size, shape, and location of the
exhaust ports, combined with the features of
various castings, make it challenging to find a
flange that properly fits the customer's cylinder
head. That is why you may be asked to provide
a rubbing of your cylinder head like the example
shown at the bottom of the page.

Making a pencil transfer ( Rubbing )
1. Place a sheet of paper over port(s).
Use tape and a hand to hold paper in place.
3. Check to make sure the transfer is accurate and
the paper did not slip during the process.
2. Holding the pencil’s face flat against the paper,
define the ports, bolt pattern and sealing surface.
A dirty finger works just as good or better.

Flange Features & Welding Tips
Well designed header flanges should be light, yet strong and have proper port alignment while providing adequate
sealing area. Going back fifteen years or more, a proper fitting flange was becoming difficult to find as the number of
cylinder heads available increased. Most of the "off the shelf flanges" available were universal fit. In our view, starting
with well matched header flange is essential to optimizing the output of a competition racing engine. In many cases a
"one size fits all" approach just doesn't cut it. So SPD took the logical step of designing and producing
header flanges in house back in 1999. In the beginning there were dozens and now... there are hundreds.
Keeping up with all the new applications and custom ported heads has been a challenge,
but it is essential to providing our customers with quality parts in a timely fashion.
Finished with Silicon Bronze
Wire Brushed
Welded to the inside of Flange
Not Brushed
SPD recommends welding the header primaries to
the cylinder head side of the flange and surfacing the
flange flat. This avoids weakening the tube where it is
typically under the most stress. Positioning the weld at
the gasket side of the flange allows the tube to utilize
the flange for support.
48 888-778-3312
A common practice for custom headers is
adding a bead of Silicon Bronze (SIB) around
the header tube at the flange (as shown above).
This will fill any gaps between the header tube
and the port in the flange and provide additional
support.

Proprietary Manufacturing
Private Label - Small Batch Manufacturing
SPD currently manufactures private label components and finished products
for a number of companies in the automotive industry. We can work from an
existing design or create a prototype for you. Our years of experience in
research and development on exhaust products for the racing industry are
at your disposal to ensure the best results for your finished product.
Ferrari
Testarossa / TF250
Maserati

Reproduction
SPD can reproduce your vehicles header on the
car, or from the original, as was the case with
these parts.
Custom Bends & Tube Bending Our NC and CNC mandrel benders are capable of bending up to 3.50” in most materials.
We also have an extensive and growing list of tooling to provide you with the right radius
for your project (see mandrel bend table pgs.20-21).
To make parts more cost effective and
reduce or eliminate set-up time costs,
we have a 50 piece minimum per tube
size and center line radius.
CNC Machining
With our Mazak VTC200-50 CNC machining center, we
produce machined header flanges that meet exacting
standards. We stock well over 200 different applications
for OEM and aftermarket cylinder heads. Most come in a
variety of port shapes and sizes and are available from ⅜”
thick 1018 cold rolled steel.
If you don’t see your application in our catalog, it is
possible we can machine them for you. The popularity
of some applications may make ideal additions to our
product line. In this case, any special programming and
set-up fees can be reduced or eliminated.
½” Thick and/or 304 Stainless are available by special order.

Fabrication
Component Fabrication
With your technical drawings or simple specification (depending on the complexity of your part) we can fabricate your
custom parts. Parts costs are figured at time and materials. Some parts may require fixtures.
Custom Exhaust
The primary focus at SPD continues to be supplying fabricators and distributors with quality components. We do still
regularly put those parts to use building custom headers and exhaust systems. If you are within towing distance,
say 2 - 2000 miles, please call and talk to us about bringing your race car, boat, motorcycle, or street rod in for
some new pipes.
Racing Headers
SPD produces headers for a number of racing classes
with standard engine / chassis configurations.
