There are now five Café Patachou® locations serving made-to-order omelettes, salads, soups, sandwiches and desserts, spreading the love to Indianapolis and visitors alike. 4901 N. Pennsylvania St. (317) 925-2823 cafepatachou.com Sure, it’s the right thing to do. But it also makes life more interesting. For my family, for instance, biking up to Broad Ripple for dinner and dessert is a special treat. Local eateries offer variety and quality—so we’re spending those precious entertainment dollars on something fresh and exciting rather than something thawed and reheated in the back of a chain restaurant. Walking to a nearby coffee shop for a business meeting beats getting in the car and driving across town. And on the way home, I can stop by the local bakery for a loaf of bread or pick up a bouquet of flowers or a potted plant—all without burning fossil fuels to get there. If that doesn’t persuade you, take a look at the numbers: For each dollar you spend at a locally owned Midtown business, roughly 80 percent goes right back into the community. Compare this with a franchise or chain: 35 percent; or the Internet: 0 percent. This means more of your tax dollars go to work here at home—potentially resulting in sidewalks repaired and potholes filled, more green spaces and more cops on the street. There are even more reasons to keep your dollars in your neighborhood: Midtown businesses employ your friends and neighbors, collectively providing more jobs combined than any other enterprise around. Oh… and one more thing. A happy business is a business that stays and grows, making the community fertile ground for more businesses and amenities, adding to the character of a community you’ve already come to love. Have we convinced you yet? — Julianna Thibodeaux midtownindy.org With special thanks to our sponsors: Midtown Parks Midtown is home to several parks both large and small. The largest, Broad Ripple Park, provides an array of recreational opportunities, including a fitness trail and a boat ramp to the White River and Bark Park. Opti Park, across from the Indianapolis Art Center, has become a popular venue for outdoor festivals. Tarkington Park is a neighborhood gathering point, and Alice Carter Park, a snippet of green at Westfield and Meridian, is getting a new, pedestrian friendly makeover. (317) 327-PARK indyparks.org Monon Trail This walking/biking trail is one of the finest portions of Indy Greenways. In Broad Ripple, the path is a step away from shops and dining, positioned to attract trail travelers. On a beautiful spring day, there’s scarcely a more popular spot to be than on the Monon. indygreenways.org/monon North Meridian Street Historic District The North Meridian Street Historic District, spanning seventeen blocks between 40th Street and Westfield Boulevard, is lined with elegant homes, most built in the 1920s and 1930s. Tour the district to see the Indiana Governor’s Residence, the Booth Tarkington home and Kurt Vonnegut’s childhood home among other architectural treasures. meridianstreetfoundation.net Getting Around You can easily navigate Midtown by bike and by bus. For bus route maps, go to indygo.net or call (317) 635-3344. For information on bicycle routes and lanes, check out theindycog.com/accessibility. From restaurants and cafés to clothing boutiques and antique stores, from farmers markets and galleries to bike shops and hair salons: I like to get the goods and the good stuff right here, in my own neighborhood. Indiana State Fairgrounds One of the city’s busiest event venues, the Fairgrounds is hopping every weekend and often during the week. Come August, it hosts the Indiana State Fair, one of the largest in the nation. The Indianapolis Ice plays in the Pepsi Coliseum, where there is also public ice-skating.
