Members Present: 39
Guests: 4 Darlene Sharp, James and Beth Montross, Linda
McKenna
New Members: Walt Kapral, Dean and Kim Kuharske.
General Meeting Minutes:
Rory Kraft called the meeting to order at 10:00 AM.
Rory Introduced Darlene Sharp to talk about the CFA (Children First Academy) needs. They have need of a “Den Father” for a Boy Scouts program they are introducing. She asked if any man in the chapter would volunteer to be a Den
Leader for 8 to 12 boys, grades 1st and 2nd. This would commence as soon as they have the program in place, very
soon and last until May 28th. It would require one hour per week, on a Monday or Thursday. Any men interested see
Darlene. She also mentioned about a drive for “Snacks for the Children”. They have testing coming up in April and last
year we donated a pickup truck full of snacks to help the children have energy during the testing period. The donation
box will be in motor clothes and any amount is helpful. Larry and Jan have started it off with $100.00 (Great Larry and
Jan), and Pete also donated.
Rory asked for new members and guests to stand up. Walt Kapral, Kim and Dean Kuharske are new members, and
James and Beth Montross were guests. We would like all new members to see our Photographer to have their picture
taken for the next news letter, if they wish.
Rory asked for Officer Reports:
Jim Osborn—Assistant Director: The Desert Ride registration is open now, with both online and at the Dealer. Forms
are in the lounge area and the money may be given to motor clothes or dropped in the HOG mail box. The cost this year
is $30.00 for Riders and $15.00 for passengers. (Please Note: Shirt Sizes 2XL and up require onsite registration at the
Dealership, and is $5.00 additional) The route is the same as last year; the ride is April 12th with tickets passed out at
the ride start at the Anthem Dealership, Wikieup, and Seligman for the Cash and Prize drawings at the end of the ride.
We are going to the ROADRUNNER STEAKHOUSE in New River this year and they are offering specials on food and
drink. That will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the $500.00 Cash drawing ($300.00, $150.00, and $50.00) to be held
at 6:30 PM. We are also providing a free lunch at the American Legion in Seligman this year. The success of the ride
depends on the sponsors, the cost is $200.00 and is tax deductable, and all sponsor checks should be made out to St.
Mary’s Food Bank. We have packets available for sponsors as well as flyers and hand outs. Please see me (Jim
Osborn) or Rory for them and place them in business windows to advertise the ride.
We need volunteers for Registration the day of the ride as well as in Wikieup and Seligman. The volunteers will get
three tickets for the drawing and also a T-Shirt. The last ride is to leave the Anthem Dealership at nine and the volunteers will be able to go on the ride, and we encourage that, as well as the volunteers at each of the stops when the last
bike goes by. One thought for sponsors, if you know of someone or business, but the $200.00 might be a bit much ask
for a gift card to be given away in lieu of the full sponsorship, we had great success last year doing this. Rory noted that
we will have 70 T-Shirts available, so for some last minute registrations they might not get a T-shirt, but all else will be
available. We are also going to provide the sponsors with a plaque, something for them to have, to show our appreciation, and for them to put on their wall. John Valentine did a mockup to give us an idea of how it could look.
It was suggested that this ride be posted on LET’S Ride, and John Valentine said it would.
Jean Miller – Treasurer Report: Checking account has $5,203.32 The Savings Charity Account has $186.38.
Jeff Feldstein – Secretary: The T-Shirts this year will be a nice Desert Tan Color, with the lettering on the back in a
standout “Harley” orange. We will have the map and the sponsor logos on the back too. They will really look out-

standing.
Don Montrey – Editor: Don is still trying to get stories for the newsletter and the response so far has been underwhelming. Members, if you have rides you remember, that were significant and memorable, please put together a short story
about them. Of course they should be “Harley” rides, but if it was on something else that’s ok too. Please email them to
Don; [email protected], 500 words or less and include pictures (Jpeg) if you have some. We would like to build
up a library of sorts to make the newsletter a little more interesting and fun to read. These stories would be used, as
space permits and the need arises, (one or two each month). Just note that your story might not be in the very next issue. The only criteria are that they be positive and related to motorcycling.
Kim Kuharske – Activities: Kim has started to create a Twitter account for the Anthem H.O.G. Chapter. More information to follow. Also the Waffle Ride is on again this year, up to Leon’s in Payson, May 24 th is the date. The ride is for
chapters, 93 and us. Leon puts on a breakfast with his outstanding Waffles and other food, it is a great time and last year
we had 70 + attend. (Post mtg note: Chapter Twitter site [email protected]. Ed.)
Merri Jo Ellis – LOH: We have arranged for a Private Basic rider class from Team Arizona to get your license, or just
brush up on your skills. We have gotten a reduced price of $240.00 and you get a $50.00 gift card from Harley Davidson. The dates for this event are March 22nd and 23rd. We are also working on a Leatherwork ride, where we will ride to
the event, have all the materials there so you just show up and be prepared to be creative. We are also working on a
progressive dinner (Brunch) ride and are looking for volunteers to open up their homes to host part of the ride, please
email me ([email protected]) and we can work on getting this put together. The date is May 3 rd and the ride will
not limit the number of people who can go. You will just need to RSVP.
George Sherman – Photographer: Just out taking pictures.
Rory Kraft – Head Road Captain: If you the members, have places you would like to go, please email me and we will
try to work them in. Just give me a destination and I will figure out the route and see if it is feasible. Thank you. (Rory
told a joke)
Marty Galison – Webmaster: Just getting started on the site, working with Rory updating everything.
Derrick Ellis – Safety Officer: Derrick asked if anybody who was here last week could remember the theme for this
year’s program. “Safety Awareness”. He also reminded us of the Helmets and that discussion. We are going to have a
guest speaker after the next meeting, Team Arizona will be here going over the course offerings they have for us. In addition to the Basic Rider Course they have the Confidence Course and the Advanced Course. We have arranged for
course discounts and we will get the information out to all members of the Chapter. Derrick said he is going to take the
Courses, setting an example for the Chapter.
Phillip –Buddy Stubbs Marketing: – Today we have the riding gear essentials seminar after the meeting. Next week is
the Hot Rods & Harley’s at the Chapter 93 Hogs and Dogs. This is the largest Hogs & Dogs that the chapter does all
year.
March at the Phoenix store is Buddy Stubbs 10th Annual Bike Week Bash and the Chapter might need additional
help, just email [email protected] and volunteer. They will be giving out 100 points per hour on your awards
account again, so please call or email as we will need lots of help.
Next item is the Wednesday Ride, and more information is available at www.wednesdayride.com, April 2nd is the date.
Last is Bikefest at Wild Horse Pass Hotel and Casino, the event is free, vendors, demonstrations, bar, etc. However, the
concert, on Saturday night the 5th with Sammy Hagar will be a cost item, pricing is not finalized yet.
John Valentine – Membership Officer: John passed out membership cards, and noted that they have been redesigned, (they look great), and have all kinds if information on them, and are laminated. If you just renewed your new cards
will be up at the merchandise counter in a few days. John also reminded the membership to have their Loyalty Rewards
Card scanned by him and if you don’t know what a “rewards card” is see John or email him to get started. We have 90
renewed members so far, if you have not renewed than you are going to be dropped from the membership and you will
have to join again, due to legal reasons, etc.
John also presented his safety talk on bladed devices, as usual very interesting.
Rory conducted the 50/50 Drawing and Gift Certificate Drawing:

Ride to Ike’s Cook Shack
February 23, 2014
Road Captain: Rory Kraft
Photos By: Adrienne Coro
Prattle By: Fat Don (Ed)
Ike’s Cook Shack in Wickenburg is my favorite place
for Breakfast. Judging by the turnout for the ride on
Feb 23rd I am not alone in this. 23 members & guests
assembled at McDonald’s on a beautiful morning for
the 40 mile ride.
Unfortunately Ike’s is a small establishment and when
we arrived the restaurant was already full. In honesty I
am not sure all 23 of us could have been accommodated at one seating.
A back up plan was quickly devised and most of the
group reformed at the Country Kitchen just across
the street.
Ike’s is a truly GREAT place for breakfast but does
much better with smaller groups so if you are looking for a good midweek breakfast ride give Ike’s
Cook Shack a try. They have, in my opinion, the
best biscuits and gravy around, especially when ordered with two eggs and hash browns.
My Thoughts: Rory Kraft-Director
The weather has been great and this has been reflected with a very encouraging attendance
on our Chapter rides so far this year. I know it will soon be hot and some of our members
are winter visitors. They will be going back to their home states and talk about the chapter
they joined in Arizona. The great rides that the chapter in Anthem go on and that they were
happy they found our chapter. It has been a great winter retreat from all the snow that we
have been hearing about in the Midwest and back east. Of course this will bring throngs of
people out to our state next winter, but if they are all as nice as the ones that have joined this year we will
welcome them. Some will stay and some will say it is too hot but will enjoy it while they are here. We know
how nice it is to go out in the garage almost any time here in Arizona and jump on the bike and go for a ride,
without shoveling any snow out of the way before doing so.
We still have a lot of great rides planned and are always planning more with input from you our members.
We need you all to step up and tell us about the great places you have traveled in our state or maybe a little
beyond. For the officers and I to continue to make your Chapter the best one in the valley we need all the
help we can get. Rides aren't the only thing we need your help with. We have a great Photographer (Sherm)
and he is doing a good job, but like any of us he can't be on all the rides. Almost everybody has a camera or
phone that takes pictures, so please take some and send them on to Sherm, at [email protected]. You will have the pleasure of sharing your photos and possibly seeing your work in
our monthly newsletter.
Speaking of newsletters, our editor Don has been asking for your input for several meetings now. I know you
have a story or two that you just can't wait to share with us. So please send them to [email protected]. Since most of the articles aren't time sensitive he will be able to get a little library to
pull from when needed. If there is something that needs to be put out there to be current with an event please
mention it to him and I'm sure he will try to fit it in.
We are working hard on the 3rd annual Desert Ride, the website is up and just waiting for you to register. We
want to make this a great event and raise lots of money for St Mary's Food Bank. There are many of people
that have fallen on hard times and this is a place where they aren't judged when they go in to help feed their
families. We ride one of the finest motorcycles in the world and we often (well always) ride to have lunch or
breakfast and we take it for granted that all are able to do the same, but that is not always so. Please help
when you can.
Our newest officers are hard at work, they jumped right in and got things going. Merri Jo "MJ" Ladies of
Harley already has the start on a progressive dinner ride, I think a brunch was suggested and so it will be a
little earlier in the evening to make things a little safer and not ride in the dark. Kim has been busy keeping us
updated on Twitter and Facebook, and she is working hard to get us sponsors for the Desert ride.
I know I will be in trouble for not mentioning each and everything that each officer does or has done, but all
the Officers put in a lot of time at their respective jobs, some while holding down regular jobs. Some time
things behind the scene go unnoticed like the great job John our membership officer did on the membership
cards, or the hours on a report that was done by Jean our treasurer, the keeping of minutes that Jeff our secretary does for the officer and general meetings that have to be transcribed before sending to the editor for
your viewing. Don our editor has many hours of work ahead of him each month to publish the great newsletter
you are reading. Please take a moment to thank each and every one of them when you see them. I know I
could not do my job without them by my side. So we do need your help to make our chapter grow.
Thanks for listening & Please check the calendar regularly
Respectively Yours
Rory
Membership: John Valentine
We often refer to our fellow H.O.G. Members as family, so why not introduce someone from your own family to H.O.G.?
I tried to get my mother, Char, to come
out on a motorcycle ride with either Stacy
or me, but she just couldn’t bring herself
to do it.
After years of asking her to come along,
she finally agreed one day, perhaps just to
do it and get us to shut up about it. We
went on a fairly long ride doing a loop from
the Valley up to Payson, Strawberry, Camp
Verde, Cottonwood, Jerome, Prescott, Skull
Valley, Wickenburg and finally back home
to Surprise.
It was beautiful weather at the start, but
as the daylight faded and higher elevations
rose up beneath us, it started to get cold.
Really cold. By the time we left Skull Valley, we had to find somewhere, anywhere
that had some heat they could share so we
could thaw out a bit for the final dash
home.
Our prayers were answered as we saw the
glow of the Mountainaire gas station reach
out to us as we came over the next of an
abundance of rolling hills. We had to pry
ourselves off of the trike and went inside to
soak in the wondrous heat of the quaint
country market.
Somewhat thawed out and ready to ride,
we climbed aboard and headed into the
pitch blackness that seemed to stretch all
the way to the horizon. We pointed the
front tire towards Yarnell and enjoyed
some twisties in the dark, which was cool
as we could now start to see the lights of
Wickenburg as we gazed out over the old
western-style town of Congress.
By the time we returned home we had covered around 450 miles over the course of
at least 11-12 hours. It was my longest
ride on the trike at that point and the long-
est ride she had ever been on. We
were frozen, saddle sore, and exhausted, so I figured that was the
first and the last time she would
ever want to go on another ride.
To my surprise, she was asking me the following day when the next ride was that we could
go on together! Since then she has been on
several rides with me and also with our Anthem Chapter. She was on the last Anthem Desert Ride, another chilly one, and we even
planned a 3-day adventure to cover the 4corner states. (Stay tuned for a future article
recounting that ABC adventure)
We turned that 4-corners trip into an ABC’s of
Touring adventure as I introduced her to just
one of the many fun things we can do as
H.O.G. Members while out on the road. She
really enjoyed all the fun and excitement we
had as we tried to get photos of all the signs,
often with cars whizzing by and honking at the
2 odd ducks out there taking a picture of the
‘Welcome to Zuni’ sign. The only downside was
that she couldn’t claim any credit for the contest.
There have been multiple times where a nonmember just doesn’t have the same opportunities or ability to participate in some situations.
I solved that problem and gave her a 3-month
early birthday present by signing her up for an
Associate H.O.G. Membership and she is also
now an official Member of our great Anthem
Chapter.
Make sure you say hello as she should be at
our next and her first ever H.O.G. Meeting.
Let’s show her, and anyone else who comes as
a guest or a new Member to our Chapter that
they will be welcomed into our family!
You joined a riding club, remember?
