the monitor handbook
the monitor handbook
prologue
The handbook in your hand is not a promotional gift, not a product catalogue and not a company
brochure. Our monitor handbook is all that and much more.
In these pages you will find a compact summary of everything that you should need to know
for our collaboration on integrated monitor technology. This also includes fundamental
considerations for the creation of modern conference rooms and digital display options
for guidance systems, advertising and room signage. We’ll take you along for a ride to the
middle of an innovative company with the highest demands for quality, and simultaneously
provide a free glimpse of the fascinating work processes in our factory.
Since we are constantly improving our products and continually developing our spectrum
of expertise, the content of this book is never completely finished. For this reason, we have
left free space in the monitor handbook: space for your own ideas, space for new developments, space for individuality. So you can use your copy to create a personal, expandable resource according to your needs and have one that answers all your questions about
ELEMENT ONE at any time or place.
the 5 elements in the monitor handbook
The development of integrated monitor systems involves more than just the production of innovative technical products. Critical are the different aspects of the room
situation in which the technology is going to be used. Departing from this holistic
approach, we have assigned an element to every focal point – analogous to the
Chinese element theory. Our name is our programme.
According to this theory, the earth
symbolizes the middle, growth and the
starting point of all things. In the character of this element, you will find all
the important information about our
company, the focus of our activities and
the complex processes in our factory.
4
Monitors like those that ELEMENT ONE
develops and produces are not simply
generic office equipment. They are an
integral component of holistic, planning
concepts and room solutions. In the
character of the element water, we outline different types of rooms, their function and the processes that take place
there. Since water is the symbol for the
flow of communication, reflection and
the conveying of ideas.
In the next step, we dedicate ourselves
even more concretely to the requirements that this entails for our products
in the area of integrated media technology, and link the subject of integrated
monitor technology to the qualities of
the element wood: It stands for development, dawn and movement.
Our monitors, digital information signs
and customised special designs demonstrate technical expertise and evident consideration for quality. On top
of that, there are years of experienced
and profound knowledge about the
concrete demands of users, planners
and decision-makers. Summarized, all
this has its equivalent in the properties
assigned to the metal: sophistication,
success and a focus on the goal. Here
you will find our complete range of
products.
Finally, fire in the Chinese circle of
elements stands for action and dynamism. In the character of this element,
we show the successful integration of
innovative monitor technology from
ELEMENT ONE in modern work and
communication worlds on the basis of
seven representative projects we have
completed.

ELEMENT ONE
a factory
Since Ralf Küchel and Thorsten Nees
formed the company in 2001, we have
been concentrating on the flexible integration of high-quality monitor technology in furniture and AV systems. In
our own factory at the headquarters in
Baden-Württemberg Ettlingen, we continually work on the optimization of the
innovative, partially patented mechanisms for the seamless embedding of
monitors in the surfaces of tables and
conference furniture. Selected components, precise, durable mechanics and
an elegant design go hand in hand. We
are also increasingly dedicating ourselves to the development and manufacturing of digital information signs
and display solutions for presentation
and sales rooms.
Over the years, ELEMENT ONE has
repeatedly been able to make a name
for itself as a source of inspiration. For
example, this was the case with the

the company
CONVERS Double where we were the
first manufacturer to produce a twosided, completely retractable screen.
Expertise and an innovative spirit in
the multilayered process of product
development, a network of prominent
partners in the furniture industry, AV
media technology and a constantly high
level of quality make ELEMENT ONE a
leading player in the area of integrated
monitor systems. Besides a strong presence in the European market, we are increasingly expanding our international
sphere of business with projects e.g. in
Russia and the United Arab Emirates.
ELEMENT ONE is a company in the Data
Display Group.

Quality is the opposite of accidents
It doesn‘t matter whether it is a large
or small format, an information sign or
equipment for a conference room: Every
monitor meets the quality demands that
we place upon every product in manufacturing because they are the result of
precise work at all production levels,
like a chain of meticulous controls. And
last but not least, of course, because of
the experience gained from our longstanding employees in manufacturing.
ELEMENT ONE
from the idea to the product
Product development
The development of integrated monitor
systems requires not only creative ideas,
but also an innovative spirit and the diligence of precise knowledge about the
concrete application scenarios. Product
development at ELEMENT ONE does
not occur in a vacuum – it is based on a
broad foundation of project experience,
knowledge about current and long-term
market developments and a feel for the
needs of our partners and customers.
11
Planning
The starting point for all future steps,
from prototyping to serial production,
is the diligent development of the later
construction in CAD. The 3D construction, manufacturing drawings and assembly instructions are later based on
this model.
Prototyping
Firstly, we create a prototype directly
in the factory and intensively test the
durability of the mechanisms for folding
and retracting the monitor. The weightbearing parts are designed to withstand
three times more than required. The
precision milled parts must achieve almost zero-percent wear in over 21,000
test movements.
ELEMENT ONE has its own CNC milling
machine – which facilitates not only the
production of prototypes directly in the
factory, but also makes it easier to adjust individual products to customers’
special wishes.
12
ELEMENT ONE
from the idea to the product
Durability and retention of value
Equipping a room with monitors from
ELEMENT ONE means you are making
an investment in a long-term, functional, high-quality solution, and not getting
a generic product. The additional purchased components must also be able
to guarantee the retention of value and
durability of ELEMENT ONE monitors.
For our screens, we only use industrial
panels. These are sought according to
specific criteria such as their sensitivity
to impact, vibrations or heat.
Extremely resistant cables 10 times
more durable than the standard, an individually developed DC 4-prong plug
and our own VGA cable for the connection to standard systems round out the
choice of individual parts. The supply
of replacement parts is ensured for ten
years, and there are also countless upgrade options. Monitors from ELEMENT
ONE, as a part of the technical infrastructure of a conference room, can
continue to meet the latest technology
standard for years in the future without
having to be completely upgraded. This
totally ensures the financial and ecological sustainability of your investment
in our quality products.
13
Innovation and special
features
Our display windows of pure micro-polished and anodized aluminium ensure a
high degree of heat dissipation, which
means that the monitor housing does
not require any ventilation slits. And
you can also avoid having a loud, active
ventilation system. Another effect: the
displays are protected against water
and dust thanks to the solidity of the
housing. On the viewing side, the display housing consists of a 4 mm strong,
interference anti-reflecting glass pane.
A control panel integrated in the monitor system lets you run over 100 programmes that can be easily updated.
The control possibilities range from
simple analogue to complex digital
pulses.
14
The control panel also facilitates important protective switches such as
jamming protection and time limits, the
first of which is especially important for
workplaces in the public sphere. Additionally, the devices can be secured
electronically to prevent the reversal of
polarity and overloads.
In selecting the materials for use, we
pay special attention to sensitivity and
substances that are not harmful. We
only use food-safe plastic (POM) and
no solvents. The assembly of the displays takes place solely in the dust-free
environment of the company’s own
flowbox clean room. The high demands
for quality in production, the selection
of suppliers and included materials let
us succeed in delivering serial products
with the lowest possible material and
production tolerances.
ELEMENT ONE
from the idea to the product
Guidelines and certificates
The monitors manufactured in our TÜV
(MOT)-audited factory conform in full
with the RoHS. All models also possess
the coveted TÜV GS test seal – which,
besides the price, also offers an objective yardstick for the difficult criteria
of quality and safety. Neutral experts‘
regular checks of our production facilities and the products manufactured
there also ensure that the awarding of
the certificate does not represent only
a momentary snapshot. This helps with
purchase decisions on all levels: Particularly for monitor systems that are
installed in public building areas, it is
absolutely necessary that you have a
guarantee for user safety e.g. through
pinch and voltage protection.
The lack of harmful materials in all
products from ELEMENT ONE is ensured by the strict maintenance of the
RoHS directive (Restrictions on the Use
of Certain Hazardous Substances).
Quality controls down
to the finishing touches
The close-knit network of control
points that guarantee the constantly
high quality standard at ELEMENT ONE
begins right with the incoming goods.
This includes well conceived reports,
a precise test of all production parts
and a 100% check of the visible parts.
Until final acceptance, a device passes
through four testing stations and is also
subject to a picture test programme and
power and friction measurements. Mechanical components such as pinching
protection and the velocity of the retraction mechanism are electronically
adjusted in a precise way here. After
approval and final cleaning, the devices
are subject to another visual inspection
and packaged in special cartons – completeness with an exact package list
and a final photo report of the content
is guaranteed.

ELEMENT ONE
rooms and
room situations
NOTES
Today’s work and communication situations are as diverse as the rooms in
which we find work, exchanges and the
conveying of knowledge. Increasingly
more people are collaborating over
great distances and only rarely meet
personally to exchange information.
For this reason too, concepts that network people and support communication without preventing concentration
on the main thing have become a focal
point of innovative room planning.
In the following, you will find an overview of different, typical room scenarios that were primarily taken from the
professional sphere of use. Depending
on your specific demands, the borders
still run smoothly. Multifunctional rooms
can easily fulfil multiple tasks parallel.
Precisely in the planning of such mixed
forms, it is necessary to have well conceived media and AV concepts that can
transform the space and let it become
what it should be.
Besides the approaches outlined here,
there are a number of alternative room
situations that can also benefit from
18
ELEMENT ONE
rooms and room situations
being equipped with integrated media
technology. In particular, applications
in the residential, hospitality and entertainment area can be completely legitimate and totally successful.
1 Meeting rooms
Meeting rooms are designed for the
productive meeting of small groups of
up to eight participants. In the work
and discussion situations here, direct
communication with the involvement of
all people present takes precedence.
Presentation and discussion phases
can change any which way. The technical equipping of the room should be
flexibly adjustable to this situation by
selecting monitor systems that offer
access to the presented contents from
all places as well as the possibility of
working collectively. In work phases in
which no access to visual information is
required, the monitors should be folded
down to create free space, reduce distractions and ensure the direct, uninterrupted flow of information.

3 Seminar and training rooms
In furnishing a seminar room, the foremost
concern is the analysis of the conveyed
content and the resulting requirements
for furniture and technology. For some
subject areas, it is only necessary to
ensure the visibility of a presentation,
e.g. on a media wall. In turn, completely
equipped, interactive workspaces may
be required for EDP training sessions,
computer-based tests and learning
situations with a high practical share.
Touch screens can be used here as
much as optionally connectable input
media or interfaces for uncomplicated
access to mobile storage media. Even
the style of the conveyance, which can
range from frontal instruction to the
collective processing of the learning
material, has its equivalent in the choice
of the media technology. Ideal for a
diversely useable seminar room, we offer
transformable solutions with which the
room can be flexibly adjusted to each of
these scenarios.
The purchase and maintenance costs
of the media technology are last but not
least a critical factor in training rooms
designed for large numbers of people.
The crucial issue always remains: Each
space receives the same quality of all
the information.
4 Auditorium and congress hall
Auditoriums and congress halls with a
large number of seats can also be designed for more of a frontal presentation or for interactive communication.
In symposiums and lectures, there is a
clear separation between the speaker
and the audience. In some circumstances, all the participants’ seats are
not equipped with their own monitors,
but rather only the podium places. The
speaker should be able to use a screen
at his place to comfortably control a
large-format presentation visible to the
entire hall without losing visual contact
with his audience.
But other scenarios are also conceivable: In a congress hall, the possibility
of interaction and the ability to follow
the presented data must be ensured for
a large number of participants at each
seat. Initially, this requires a different
basic structure in the room planning.
In the technical equipping of individual
seats, it may be necessary to provide
multiple competencies and optional
access possibilities to media control
and data resources.

5 A meeting at your workplace
The equipment, size and location of an
office provide direct information about
the status and hierarchical position of
a person within the company. But all
working rooms have one thing in common: The growing digitalization of the
equipment and the parallel development
of increasingly space-saving computer
technology is creating new free space
that can also be used for communicative processes. Meetings at desks can
run as efficiently as in small meeting
rooms if they are set up accordingly.
The possibility of using the individual
desk for meeting situations too should
be considered in your planning. As the
form of a desk can signal unity or can
be open for multiple people, the presence of personal monitors at the workspace can meet the requirement of giving multiple people a view in meeting
situations.
Consulting
and
sales
6 Consulting and sales
The range of different sales and consulting situations that the presence of a
PC system requires is very diverse. The
arrangement in the room and the positioning of the involved persons actively
influence the psychological processes,
decisions and thus the results in the
conversation. The selected design and
the values signalled through it such as
prestige or restraint depend above all
on the type of service or product. If the
data processed on the monitor has a direct connection and consequences for
the results of the sales talk or consult-
ing session, then it should be as easy
as possible for the customer to view
the data whether by looking at it on an
optional second monitor that can be
unfolded or by looking at a two-sided
screen.
Just as relevant for the planning of the
monitor solution is the location of the
consulting area – in public rooms that
are also accessible, if the space is not
occupied, there is naturally a strong desire to protect against unauthorized access, as at consulting areas in an office
or closed building area.
7 Foyer, lounge and public
building areas
Viewing the foyer, corridor and waiting
area only as rooms that must be passed
through would be neglecting their
potential. By providing information and
interactive communication offers at
sites that each visitor to the building
must pass through by force, you can
ensure a broad dissemination of information or an advertising message.
ELEMENT ONE
rooms and room situations
Simultaneously, foyer areas that also
operate as a figurehead for the company help increase prestige through the
stylish, discreet placement of screens.
The furnishing of lounge areas in a design that is suited for the ambience of
adequate workspaces produce a real
additional benefit with regard to service
and use potential for your guests.

The 6 arguments:
ELEMENT ONE
integrated monitor systems
With the advancing digitalisation of the
professional and everyday world, the
requirements for conference and meeting rooms have fundamentally changed.
The interaction of architecture, design
and audio-visual equipment has a significant impact on the effectiveness of
communication processes within companies and organizations.
It should be possible to adapt modern
conference rooms to the given circumstances in hybrid, multifunctional and
flexible ways. Integrated, retractable
monitor systems make a critical contribution here: Depending on the requirements, you can equip the individual
places with a complete PC system that
26
has a keyboard and mouse or just a
pure information medium. And if none
of them are necessary, the monitor
remains invisible in the surface of the
furniture. Since the more our environment is penetrated by digital media
and computer technology, the more
we enjoy its absence in those moments
where concentration is critical for
interpersonal communication.
There are many arguments for equipping a conference room with a high-end
solution of integrated monitor systems
from ELEMENT ONE.
1 Ergonomics and visibility
In your conference and training rooms,
you make important decisions and convey
essential knowledge. For this reason,
you should initially ensure that the
speaker can control his presentation
and follow it without having to turn his
back to the audience. In the process, it
should be possible for each listener to
follow the lecture without having to turn
his or her head to the side or only being
able to make out fragments for hours.
Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to
design a conference room in which all
the participants simultaneously sit in a
comfortable position and have a perfect
view of a projection or a large screen
on the wall. By equipping all speaker
and participant places with monitors,
you ensure the permanent visibility of
all information for the people involved.
27
ELEMENT ONE
integrated monitor systems
2 Aesthetics and prestige
The impressiveness of a monitor retracting almost silently into the furniture‘s
surface is simply breathtaking. The
convergence of technical components
and high-quality, beautifully designed
pieces of furniture offer a nice, natural
feeling and optics. The presence and
the perceptible complexity of the audiovisual technology are reduced. This has
a positive impact on the design and the
atmosphere e.g. of presentation rooms
and consulting areas, which can be
representative and simultaneously offer ideal communication conditions. An
impressive effect is also obtained by the
optional remote control of the folding or
retracting mechanism for individual or
multiple monitors.
28
3 Communication
The conveying of content plays a critical
role in the success of a presentation.
The simultaneous distribution of the
monitors means that all people present
take part equally in the communication
process. There is no last row. The equipping of the seats with touch screens offers the possibility of making decisions
literally at the same time and together.
And the optional use of individual monitors ensures that the conference room
adjusts itself to the requirements and
not the reverse: If the monitors are not
needed, they disappear in the conference furniture without a trace – and
thus do not attract attention, but rather
create space for the collective concentration of all participants.
29
ELEMENT ONE
integrated monitor systems
4 Security
For use in sales rooms and in consulting
areas, the integrated monitor systems
from ELEMENT ONE reveal another,
very practical benefit: If a seat is not
occupied, the monitor and keyboard
can be folded and secured against
larceny. In this way, you protect the
hardware and access to your system
and sensitive data – very easily, with
one push of a button. The folding or
retracting mechanism of the monitor
can moreover be handled remotely from
a protected control panel, which also
increases the security of the system.
30
5 Information
Whether in the company’s lobby, in the
cinema or in the shopping mall – digital displays are becoming more and
more popular in public spaces. A performance is postponed, a meeting is
moved to another room, the programme
of a conference is changed at the last
minute?
Everything can be communicated directly and at short notice with a digital
signage system: Where pencil and paper
were used earlier, today a display from
ELEMENT ONE does its duty. Just like
the pencil and paper – but much more
effectively. The attention for LCD monitors and displays is not only significantly
greater than for analogue information,
the perfect optical and technical integration also enhances the design of
every room.
6 Efficiency
The elegant integration of audio-visual
systems and monitors in conference and
office furniture has a unique aesthetic
effect. Even more surprising is perhaps
the fact that it is by no means luxury
that forcibly drives up the project costs.
If the potential of integrated monitor
technology is systematically included
in the planning, there are unforeseen
possibilities for savings in room and
building space. Savings that show up
directly in the budget of course.
The implementation of a display-based
system for conference rooms is also an
investment that writes itself off surprisingly quickly thanks to the saved costs
for freed-up, but not used room capacity.
No matter where you are – the considered, targeted use of digital display
technologies in the widest variety of
room and building situations not only
means a visual and aesthetic upgrade,
but also brings clearly calculatable
financial advantages.

The complex control mechanism that
enables the unfolding and folding or retracting of a monitor is based on ingeniously simple principles that vary from
model to model. For each line, there are
ideal scenarios for use. For all models
from serial production, the following
applies:
34
1. Screen diagonal for each model is
between 10 and 32 inches
2. Broad-angle technology ensures
that the screen can be viewed from
178 degrees horizontally and vertically
3. Format is a letter box (4:3) or a wide
screen (16:10), depending on the model
4. Materials are either the finest micropolished and anodised aluminium or
robust stainless steel
5. Options and accessories, e.g. frames
and housing come in the desired
colour (anodized or powder-coated)
6. Glass protective screen is 4 mm with
interference non-reflective (optional
in some cases)
7. Peripheral interfaces are available
for connecting to conventional
systems
8. Models can be integrated at individual places or as a networked solution
9. Installation requires only a precise,
milled cutout – insert, close, finished.
ELEMENT ONE

10. Remote interface is available for all
models
11. No need for ventilation thanks to heat
dissipation via the metal surface
12. Safe from spraying water pursuant
to IP 54
13. Pinching protection in various
designs (dead man, electronic
pinching protection, active
(capacitive) pinching protection)
14. Models protect the environment
thanks to the reduced power loss of
the electronics by using ultramodern
technology and passive cooling
systems

VERSIS
the screen side is always visible
unlimited, from horizontal embedding in table and furniture surfaces
to installation in vertical structures.
The folding mechanism of VERSIS
can be controlled electronically or
manually.
The robust, compact beginner model
VERSIS 150 with manual mechanisms
has either a black or silver aluminium
frame as well as a screen surface that
faces up and is always visible, even
when folded. The folding mechanism
is operated by applying slight pressure
to the back side. Since such controlling
cannot be used synchronously over a
large number of desks, the VERSIS 150
is especially well suited for individual
desks such as the speaker’s podium or
a mobile media cart.
A mouse and keyboard are not included
with this model.
These models are however equipped
with electromechanic automation,
which allows you to fold and unfold
the housing with one click of a button.
Under the display is also space for a
keyboard embedded in the structure.
Consequently, this solution is very
well suited for workspaces that must
be equipped with input media such as
meeting rooms and small to mediumsized conference rooms.
If no keyboard is planned in your design,
this feature can be completely left out.
All VERSIS models of the type Basic do
not have a keyboard; the models with
../75 have the monitor mounting at the
front on the frame. All VERSIS models
can be equipped with a touch screen.
The VERSIS Vertical model is designed
for flexible installation in furniture, walls
and vertical structures.
Features

Its visible side that can be retracted into
the furniture’s surfaces and its closed
back make MODIS ideally suited for secure use in publically accessible building areas. If a space is not occupied, the
monitor is folded and practically melts
into the surface of the table. An effect
that can be reinforced by veneering the
backside of the monitor. Hardware and
system access is completely protected
against unauthorized access and larceny
by the secured control mechanism –
until the monitor is unfolded and the
keyboard emerges.
With screen diagonals of 17 to 19 inches,
MODIS 170 and 190 are the perfect solution for reception areas, consulting
areas, offices and simultaneously offer
stylish design possibilities for all types
of conference rooms – with or without

convers
everything vertical
Even more than our other models, monitors from the CONVERS line have the
ability to practically disappear without
a trace in the surface of furniture. The
housing can be retracted vertically or
slightly diagonally into furniture with
normal standard table heights. The
monitor can be lowered or raised by
pushing a button. The critical advantage: Only a relatively small hole is
necessary for installing the CONVERS,
so the table’s surface remains largely
unbroken.
44
This makes the CONVERS suitable for
all types of conference rooms, meeting rooms and presentations, while also
simultaneously ideal for representative
purposes and consulting areas. In serial
production, the models offer a screen
diagonal of 15, 17, 19 or 32 inches; special
models have almost no limits to the
features for inclusion. Installation also
remains uncomplicated for such a premium solution: A precisely milled cutout
with or without a cover is sufficient as
preparation.

CONVERS double
one screen – two sides
The models from the CONVERS Double
series unite two high-quality 17 inch
flat screens in one compact housing
that can be lowered vertically into the

screens show the same or different images and data. This innovative solution,
which made ELEMENT ONE the first
manufacture to develop a double-sided,
completely retractable monitor, is ideal
for medium-sized and small meeting
rooms.

ROTATIS
the rotatable monitor
ROTATIS is a foldable monitor whose
visible side can either face up or down,
on a circular rotating plate. It is installed
with its own frame in the furniture’s surface; the construction is complete and
does not require any additional holders
on the piece of furniture. ROTATIS lets
you turn the monitor 350 degrees. The
rotating mechanism can be operated
manually or electrically if desired.
50
ROTATIS is ideal for use in those places
where multiple people should simultaneously view content on the screen,
e.g. in consulting areas, in small to
medium-sized meeting rooms or also at
sales and information points. The available screen diagonals and optional
extended features like a keyboard and
input media correspond to those of
MODIS and VERSIS.

57
SIGNIS
for terminals, servers and media control
Digital signage systems are becoming
increasingly popular in public areas –
and not only because of their superior
aesthetic as compared to traditional
advertisements and conventional room
signs.
The practical advantages of digital
signs in rooms and display-based guidance systems are apparent right from
the start: A performance is postponed,
a meeting is moved to another room, the
programme of a conference is changed
at the last minute? Then the displayed
content is centrally adjusted to the current circumstances without messing
with paper and printing.
At the same time, retail signage systems are fundamentally revolutionizing
the strategies of point of sale marketing.
Studies and research have showed that
advertising measures have a significant
58
impact on generated sales when digital
advertising surfaces such as LCD monitors are used.
This is not only due to the greater attention for the relatively new use of digital
media in shopping centres and supermarkets. Different from television commercials, you reach the customer with
the broadcasting of advertisements in
the shopping area on site and at the
place where the decisions are made.
Complex advertising contents are regionally and temporally personalized by
simple means. The broadcast content
can easily be adjusted to the present
target and age group at the given moment during the course of the day and
be modified at short notice.
In combination with modern content
distribution, an investment in a retail
signage systems pays for itself in the
shortest amount of time. The use of intelligent, display-based systems in the
area of conference rooms is also an
investment that pays off surprisingly
quickly. If just the actually used rooms
are reserved, then the costs for externally leased space are significantly
reduced. If e.g. meeting participants do
not confirm the use of a booked room
within a certain timeframe by touch
screen, then the room is again released
in the booking system. In this way, no
rooms are reserved that are ultimately
not used.
SIGNIS – Digital signage
in ELEMENT ONE quality
SIGNIS is the consistent transfer of our
expertise to the area of small-format
monitors for digital signs and information systems. In use as room signs or
guidance systems, SIGNIS will impress
you as an especially cost-efficient,
clever solution thanks to its Ethernet
network connection. If texts and static
images rather than films are primarily
showed, the Ethernet interface of this
model makes the use of a PC superfluous for the display of the information.
Content that requires little computer
power can be distributed directly to the
connected monitors over the network.
The costs for one’s own client PC per
display are completely saved, as is the
delivery, installation and administration
of decentral control software.
But also on the hardware level, SIGNIS
combines innovative technology and
high-quality processing: Besides low
power consumption and correspondingly low heat development, SIGNIS
distinguishes itself thanks to the lack
of high-maintenance, mechanical wear
parts. The result: a convincing synthesis of sophisticated technology and an
exclusive design adjusted to your internal architectonic requirements.
Features
Electronic information or door signs
(without movement mechanisms) with
high-quality display frames.
Material: Aluminium or stainless steel,
sizes: 10“, 12“, 17“, 19“ (other sizes
upon request),
Mounting options:
On-wall, in-wall, in-door, on-glass,

CASE STUDY 1
Project: Hannover Volksbank
PHILIP Möbelmanufaktur
“An intensive collaboration with
ELEMENT ONE began in 2003 and has
developed into an important cooperation between our companies in the
meantime.
Together with ELEMENT ONE at that
time we managed to integrate certain
monitor models with a special development in table systems so that they slide
perfectly into the table’s surface and
can hardly be noticed on the table in
a closed state thanks to the veneered
or coated monitor back. The perfect
integration of technology in furniture
is a fixed component of our product
philosophy to this day.
64
Since then, PHILIP Möbelmanufaktur,
as the successor to “Rosenthal Einrichtung,” has furnished many highlycomplex conference rooms, always
with the demand for integrative technology and perfection in design and implementation. For this purpose, we have
launched many technical components
from our own development division on
the market in recent years.
Engineering with the goal of creating innovative products assumes a
large portion of our energy. We could
have chosen many examples from our
references that we have achieved together with ELEMENT ONE. We have
decided on the boardroom of the
Hannover Volksbank, since the table
frame was a special challenge besides the requirements for the design,
surfaces and technical equipment.”
(Uwe Böhm, Managing Director of
PHILIP)
Reference: Hannover Volksbank
“Cast in concrete – two unique table
systems have been designed at the
Hannover Volksbank,“ reads the headline from back then. For its executive
board and supervisory board, the Hannover Volksbank achieved two unique
table systems that not only completely
integrate the most modern media
technology, but also combine a material mixture of tabletops with unusual
frame structures. To meet the Hannover
66
Volksbank’s wish for maximum leg room,
the table systems were created on the
basis of a column-truss construction
that should exude lightness despite
the size of the system and the heavy
granite tabletops. Since the columns
not only had to have a small diameter,
but the entire table was supposed to be
equipped with as few columns as possible, we decided to anchor the frame
structure in the floor with concrete.
The form and materiality of the table
systems are designed according to the
architectonic requirements of the existing building. Two-thirds of the tabletops
were equipped with granite, to which a
table surface veneered in pear wood
was connected. A perfect transition
from one material to another distinguishes the system as do the edge lines
that convey additional lightness to the
system.
Equipped with the most modern media
technology, the table systems were
created in a very special way. Tables
standing alone that captivate you with
their excellent equipment and a technically as well as structurally unusual
frame structure.
Details of the systems:
• Table systems for 29 and 13 people
• Integrated media technology with
11 TFT CONVERS monitors from
ELEMENT ONE, microphones, table
connection fields and a complete
technology and room control system
• Filigree tabletop made of granite and
wood
• Maximum leg room thanks to an elegant column construction
• Stainless steel columns anchored in
the floor with concrete
“PHILIP Möbelmanufaktur”
PHILIP Möbelmanufaktur focuses on
furniture concepts for management
and conference rooms. On the basis of
professionally developed and designed
components, PHILIP Möbelmanufaktur
also fulfils unusual customer wishes
with the knowledge of craftsman
perfection and the best material and
processing quality. PHILIP supports
contemporary design, the connection
of functionality and aesthetics just as
much as the demand for authenticity
and originality.
As a furniture manufacturer and architecture brand, the performance with
regard to individuality goes far beyond
serial production. Through the company’s own product developments, it is
possible to create the perfect synthesis
of wood and metal, glass and ceramics, presentation and media technology. The complete integration of media
technology in conference and meeting
tables, furniture and technology is understood as a unit. Coupled with the
highest demand for design and quality,
this ensures PHILIP a place among the
opinion leaders.

The planners
Architects bremer+bremer and Holzmedia
The project
Oculus Optikgeräte GmbH’s renovated
company building expanded by one
floor was equipped with both new
space for the management and a representative seminar room for meetings,
sales seminars and professional training
sessions with conference furniture and
media technology. In the planning, we
particularly concentrated on letting the
rooms convey a positive, professional
external effect, creating a high-quality
aesthetic and ensuring the uncomplicated integration of the required media
technology. The surfaces of the conference table should reflect the materials
that are used in the production of the
high-quality, optic devices at Oculus
(microscopes, lamps and special cameras). For this reason, we selected conference tables made of satinised glass.
70
In the seminar room, there was also a
desire to find a solution that allowed all
participants access to the information
presented on the media wall, but could
remain completely invisible in the structure if not in use. Inserted in the conference table, five CONVERS Double models
were put to use.
The achieved rooms
• Meeting room for the management
• Seminar room for 24-26 people
• Representative office for a CEO
The seminar room
and the monitors used
The media wall is completely in lava-black
textured paint, contains intermediary
facing in stainless steel and a storage
board made of white satinised glass.
The body for mounting the media technology consists of anthracite-coloured
melamine resin.
The trapezoid shaped conference table with a top made of satinised glass
offers space for 24-26 people and contains a media bar in the middle. Here
the monitor package from ELEMENT
ONE is integrated.
Five monitors of the Convers Double
model offer a total of ten 17 inch screens
that let conference participants comfortably follow the presented data.
Upon request, the monitors are lowered
vertically into the furniture’s body at the
press of a button.
The other media technology is integrated in the Holzmedia W1 media wall
with a central projection surface and a
T5 media technology package:
• Ceiling installation of the projector
with mirror projection system from
Holzmedia
• Ceiling sails with ceiling mirror
projection
• Surround sound in full stereo 7.2

Hund Büromöbel
“Integrating media technology into
conference rooms in a challenging
interior architectonic way requires not
only a clear concept, but also integrators and suppliers that can provide appropriate solutions, since you always
want to avoid having the quality of the
conference technology sacrificed to
the design. In this case, the integration
succeeded thanks to the intensive
collaboration between ProVideo, Hund
Büromöbel, ELEMENT ONE and beyerdynamic.
The result is a conference room that
takes up the clear lines of the interior
architecture and only lets its technology show itself when it is actually
needed. And this in the quality that you
can expect from the most modern conference technology.”

NOTES
The project
At the beginning of 2007, it was decided that the headquarters of AOK
Bundesverband would be moved from
Bonn to Berlin. The choice fell upon
the Wertheim family’s department store
built in 1903. The building not far from
Hackescher Markt was rebuilt in 1954
after being damaged in the war, was
used until 2000 and has remained empty
since then.
According to a draft by the architects
Schuwirth and Ermann, particular value
was placed on the retention of the
historical façade and a large portion of
the building structures in the complete
renovation. At the same time, the construction was designed to create an appealing architectonic room for roughly
480 workspaces. This also includes
a conference area in which the most
modern media technology was combined with conference room furniture
at the highest level.
The room
Large conference room K1
The conference area includes multiple
conference rooms of different sizes
that can be combined with each other
in some cases. The basis of the installation in the large conference room K1
is a customized table system from Hund
Büromöbel. This involves a meeting
table in an elliptical form for 40 participants. The tabletop is veneered radially
in European walnut; the table frame is
painted in RAL enamel.
20 monitors of the type CONVERS 190
were installed along with media technology features such as microphones
and loudspeakers. For the present
project, the desire was for seamless
integration into the table’s surface
without stainless steel covers or similar
things that could disrupt the evenness
of the surface.
For this reason, the cap for the monitor
opening was precisely cut out of the
radially veneered table surface by
Hund Büromöbel as part of a special
construction.

“Haworth has found a strong and competent partner in the area of media integration in its many years of collaboration with ELEMENT ONE. The high
demands that we have with regard to
the design, quality and operation of our

monitors.
For this reason, we are convinced
that the integration of ELEMENT ONE
screens in our exclusive furniture is the
perfect media-technology supplement
for our conference systems.
76
At the company Bruns, our job was
to develop high-quality, multifunctional
furniture that corresponds to the space.
Clear use of form, high-quality material
and the covered integration of media

as the focus of the Haworth art.collection conference systems a_con conference and Audience.
The project
Multimedia conference room
In the redesigining of the conference
rooms at the headquarters of J.C.C.
Bruns in Minden, the challenge was to
combine two corporate areas into one
joint conference centre. Haworth distinguished itself with the technical and
design qualities of the a_con conference system. The completely covered
hardware integration in rotatable and
foldable media modules provided the
basis for the flush mounting of a beamer
and a foldable monitor with a keyboard
lift. Even the audio components for the
room and sound system controls could
be invisibly integrated into the sideboard itself. The appealing colour concept of smoked oak and aluminium was
supplemented by elegant, comfortable
cantilever chairs of the s_con series in
a blue and high-quality leather design
that suits the corporate identity of the
customer.

The project
Fette Pharma AG has its headquarters in
a partially corporately, partially privately
used landmark villa on the Cologne
bank of the Rhine. Integrating work and
private life in this limited space requires
multifunctional room and detail solutions. Just like their reliability in daily
use, the discreet elegance of the closed
displays is a fundamental component of
the use concept. The office with comfortable screen workplaces changes
to a family eating and social room in
the evening. Another room becomes
the library after work. Another serves
as an optional guest room. Always with
displays from ELEMENT ONE.

Project: Metro AG Dusseldorf
Spiegels GmbH & Co. KG
The project
In 2007, METRO AG in Dusseldorf requested the complete refurnishing of
the executive floors in an integrated,
timeless design. The rooms that hold
the meetings of the supervisory board
and the executive boards were also
supposed to comfortably and smoothly
support video conferences within the
Group and between partner companies.
Value was placed on a representative,
high-quality appearance in connection
with the most modern technology. The
technology should not however dominate the room, but rather only appear
when it is actually necessary.
85
NOTES
Execution in perfection
Flat screens and video conference
cameras were built into the sideboards
of the conference rooms and can be
raised from the table via a control panel.
The technology required for this was
integrated into the middle of the pieces
of furniture on 19 inch rack rails, which
ensure easy and quick access to all
components.
A conference table for approx. 30 people
with special technical and design
details was diamond cut. A portion of
the interior surface of the table is made
of glass and lit indirectly. The light intensity can be dimmed, depending on
the purpose for which the room is being used. A comfortable atmosphere is
created and the reflection of the ceiling
lights in the monitors is prevented.
18 rising monitors of the CONVERS 190
type from ELEMENT ONE are elegantly
inserted in the table, while the interior
surface of the table was also lowered
by approximately 15 cm. For better ergonomics, the monitors are slid in with
86
an inclination of 12 degrees. Together
with the slightly lowered table surface,
this produces an ideal angle for two
participants to share one monitor.
Loudspeakers are integrated into the
vertical surface of the table interior
for pleasant, perfect sound. The outer
table area is in unostentatious Swiss
pear tree wood. All the technology was
integrated into the veneer pattern with
sliding tops. The sliding top is opened
with slight pressure. The technology
box under the sliding top contains an
extractable cable, fixtures for microphones and sufficient storage space for
extra-long cables.
The 90 centimetres of space between
the top edge and the foot column offer
ideal leg room for all participants. The
space from the monitors is relatively
generously measured and can only be
achieved with screen technology of
the highest quality, as ELEMENT ONE
always provides.

“Communication is increasingly the
driving force behind development and
innovation and thus directly influences
the success of an organisation. The selected methodology and the right use
of media have a critical impact on the
quality of the communication. Since
there is no generally applicable recipe
for the right use of media, Wilkhahn

Haag
The planners
Wilkhahn is one of the leading global
companies in the office and object furniture sector. In more than 100 years of
the company’s history, Wilkhahn developed its own systematic approach and
decisively shaped the office and object
furniture sector. Today, Wilkhahn employs over 600 employees around the
world, approx. 75 % of the total sales
are generated outside of Germany.
The project
The central conference room of the
Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs in
Den Haag has a special conference
table system that was already partially
equipped with integrated media technology. Since the room however was
occasionally used for other purposes,
this table system had to be regularly
removed in its entirety – including the
technical components – and then reassembled again. A major logistical and
time-consuming effort that cost the
building administration no less than
three days every time. A remedy was to
be found in a conference room solution
that would allow for diverse, flexible
use of the space.
89
The implementation
After an intensive phase of planning in
which specialists from Wilkhahn and
from the network partner Erben Elektronische Medien were included, a
holistic concept was developed that
accommodates all the uses of the room
at the highest level. The primary goal
was to combine a maximum amount
of flexibility in terms of the furnishings
with exclusive, innovative integrated
media technology.
The choice fell to the model “Palette”
with a surface veneered in walnut. The
metal components such as table legs
and cover panels were kept in powdercoated silver metal.
Each of the 24 participant places was
equipped with first-class media-technology components. Besides the integrated microphones, translation modules and voting terminals, each place
has a vertically integrated monitor of
the type “CONVERS 170.” Each of the
tables can be dismantled and reassembled quickly and easily; some can even
be used individual, including their entire
technical equipment.
