Blood Brothers
BEST MUSICAL – ALL MAJOR AWARDS
Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells
the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at
birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet
again with fateful consequences.
Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multiaward winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production
surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one
of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has
been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’,
as inevitably it “brings the audience cheering to its feet and
roaring its approval” (The Daily Mail).
The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and
the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True.

John McGrath’s
Tuesday 4 - Thursday 6 October
The Cheviot,
the Stag &
the Black, Black Oil
Dundee Rep’s 5-star, sell-out production of John McGrath’s The
Cheviot, the Stag and the Black, Black Oil arrives in Aberdeen.
The highly acclaimed production tells the history and the
tragedy of Scotland, performed as a Highland ceilidh, with song,
humour and drama intermixed; creating a unique theatrical
event, that remains as vital and relevant today as it was when
7:84 Scotland first presented it, over 40 years ago.
This extraordinary play looks at the exploitation and economic
changes in the Scottish Highlands throughout history, from the
ruthless evictions of Highland crofters making way for the more
economically viable Cheviot sheep in the 18th century, to the
development of stag hunts in game parks in the 19th century
and finally the exploitation of resources during the North Sea
Oil boom of the 1970’s. Written as a musical drama by John
McGrath, it explores stories and experiences of Scotland’s land,
sea and people across the centuries.

RAPTURE THEATRE IN ASSOCIATION WITH MACROBERT ARTS
CENTRE PRESENTS FROM THE WRITER OF SMASH HIT COMEDY
NOISES OFF
Democracy
by Michael Frayn
West Germany, 1969.
Charismatic Willy Brandt has been elected Chancellor.
However, his own political party are starting to plot against him.
As his enemies tighten the noose around his neck -and the
threat of an East German spy in his own office is discovered
- Brandt believes the only man he can truly trust is Gunter
Guillaume, his devoted personal assistant. But in the world of
political intrigue, espionage and betrayal, who can you trust?
Shakespearean in scale but with all the twists and spins of
modern politics, Democracy combines the fascination of a
John Le Carre thriller (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and The Night
Manager) with the dynamism of The West Wing and House
of Cards.
Witty, thought-provoking and highly entertaining, Democracy
is a compelling and unmissable night at the theatre.
Fresh from an acclaimed West End run in Gypsy, movie actor
Tom Hodgkins (Red 2 and Hanna) leads the cast as Willy
Brandt, with Taggart actor Colin McCredie.

successful study in atmosphere, illusion and controlled horror.
A lawyer obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast
over him and his family by the spectre of a Woman in Black,
engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying
story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It all begins
innocently enough, but then, as they reach further into his

SCOTTISH OPERA PRESENTS MOZART’S
The Marriage
of Figaro
Revival of the 2010 production
Sir Thomas Allen revives his much-loved production of Mozart’s
unstoppable masterpiece. Reflecting the insight and experience
of a seasoned performer, Allen’s Figaro is full of humour, subtlety
and wit. Simon Higlett’s gorgeous period designs provide the
backdrop for a comedy of social revolution and change that is
as relevant today as ever.
“The greatest works of art can stand examination again and
again. There’s always something new to find in layer after
layer; a road that will take you to new aspects of the story.”
Sir Thomas Allen
Mozart’s bubbling, energetic score shows him at his theatrical
best – with a true genius for getting to the heart of the drama,
and each character. Tobias Ringborg (Il trovatore 2015)
conducts an exciting cast including Jette Parker Young Artists
Samuel Dale Johnson and Anna Devin (Don Giovanni 2013).
Former Scottish Opera Emerging Artist Ben McAteer (The

SCOTTISH OPERA PRESENTS PUCCINI’S
La bohème
New production
Supported by The Scottish Opera Syndicate & Scottish Opera’s ‘Play a Supporting Role’ appeal
The team behind 2014’s hit Don Pasquale returns with a new production of Puccini’s classic,
La bohème. Director Renaud Doucet and designer André Barbe set the romance amidst
the jumble of Paris’s famous flea markets. Inspired by the Jazz Age of Josephine Baker, this
production will be full of their trademark colour, character and style.
“It’s a pleasure to discover La bohème for the first time or to see it for the twentieth time –
proof that, as an opera, it is universal, and that its atmosphere is more than merely nostalgic.”
Renaud Doucet & André Barbe
Puccini’s sublime score never fails to cast its spell – his lush orchestration and exquisite vocal
lines combine in some of the most ravishing music in opera. Hye-Youn Lee (Madama Butterfly
2014) is the fated Mimì and Luis Gomes, winner of 2015’s Grand Prize at the Verbier Festival
Academy and a Covent Garden regular, is Rodolfo. Music Director Stuart Stratford conducts.

Blink and you miss it: few overtures hurtle upwards
and explode quite as brilliantly as Glinka’s Ruslan and
Ludmilla. But then, in the long winter nights of Northern
Europe musicians have always known how to light up
the sky. Sibelius’s Violin Concerto sounds like it’s lit by
the midnight sun, and according to the critics, the rising
French star Alexandra Soumm makes it glow with a
special intensity. And Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony
begins in an inferno of personal tragedy before cracking
out the vodka and dancing till daybreak. Conductor
Ben Gernon has a special flair for Tchaikovsky: on an
autumn afternoon in Aberdeen, this should generate
some serious heat.

A jangling of sleighbells, a little flurry of birdsong from
the flutes – and is that a melody by Mozart? Not quite.
Mahler’s Fourth Symphony might be his most classical
in proportion, his most playful in style – outwardly, at
any rate. But from deceptively innocent beginning to
the “child’s vision of heaven” with which it ends, the
Fourth has depths as poignant and profound as anything
Mahler ever wrote. BBC SSO Conductor Emeritus Donald
Runnicles is just the person to draw out its inner drama,
and he’s joined by soprano Carolyn Sampson – who
begins with two gloriously fresh vocal showpieces by the
composer Mahler loved above all others: Mozart himself.

A majestic close to the acclaimed two-year journey Llyr
Williams and Alexander Janiczek have been taking with
the SCO through the concertos of Mozart and Beethoven.
‘Emperor’ was never Beethoven’s title, but it well becomes
such a grand, imposing work: tragically, it is the only one
of his piano concertos that Beethoven never played.
His deafness made it impossible. In contrast, Mozart’s
youthful Violin Concerto is pure sunshine. Between them
lies “… a small monument to a great love”. Berg’s hyperRomantic Lyric Suite conceals in its notes the story of a
passionate love affair.

The scales of C Major and C minor might start from the
same note, but the music they inspired from Mozart
and Beethoven couldn’t be more different. For Mozart,
C Major was a region of self-confident optimism and
cosmic order, as in the so-called ‘Linz’ symphony –
written in just a few days in 1783. But Beethoven’s
Coriolan Overture turns to C minor to create a musical
journey to self-annihilation written for Heinrich Joseph
von Collin’s play. And the Magic Flute Overture? It’s in
E-flat Major, C minor’s jubilant cousin…

Elgar’s Second Symphony begins in a great, glowing

hear a great artist laying bare his damaged soul with an
intensity and truth unprecedented in British music. It’s
unforgettable: an emotional autobiography on a par with
Mahler, and a fitting counterpart to the terrible beauty
of Butterworth’s A Shropshire Lad, performed to mark the
100th anniversary of its composer’s death on the Somme.
Sir James MacMillan’s new Viola Concerto, meanwhile,
weds the dusky sound of the viola to orchestral writing
of fiery brilliance and dark passion. Richard Farnes

The premiere of Schumann’s Second Symphony was
conducted by his friend Felix Mendelssohn, and the
work incorporates Bach’s ‘musical signature’ quoted
in The Art of Fugue – the notes B-A-C-H (in English
B-flat, A, C, B) – so surely he would nod approval at this
programme.
It was during the composition of this Symphony that
Schumann began to experience the early signs of
the mental disorder that would eventually bring his
creative life to a premature halt. He wrote that “my
resistant spirit had a visible influence on [the Symphony]
and it is through this that I sought to fight my condition”.

Brahms
Sextet No.1 in B flat major, Op. 18
Schoenberg
Verklärte Nacht, Op. 4
Richard Dehmel’s poem, Verklärte Nacht, depicts two lovers walking through a shadowy forest.
By the light of the moon, the woman reveals a dark secret: she is carrying another man’s child.
Schoenberg’s dramatic, emotionally-charged setting of the poem caused controversy at its
1902 premiere, due not only to its taboo subject matter but the actual notes, too – his forwardthinking harmonic palette was met with outrage.
Today, the piece is celebrated as one of the composer’s
most melodic and accessible pieces – dark, tense,
atmospheric, chromatic and dramatic in equal measure.
Brahms’ sextet is quite simply a stunning piece of music.
Its second movement, regularly used in film and TV,
contains some of the most beautiful chamber music
written for strings.

‘Why? Where is the taxi? Do I need a
cardie?’ and said things like: ‘There’ll be
wasps. I’ve nothing to sit on. Is that poo?
Can we go home?’
But things have changed. Now she has
outside slippers. She can tell a chaffinch
from a tit (hey). But she still can’t tell if it’s
an owl or her husband’s asthma.
Sarah Millican is venturing outside. Bring
a cardie.
“To watch Sarah Millican is to watch a
box of comedy fireworks going off”
The Independent
