Frank Sheptock
Head Coach
14th Year
Frank Sheptock begins his 14th year as head
coach and during his time at Wilkes he has led
the Colonels to an 82-55 mark. He is the seventh
head coach in Wilkes football history.
During his tenure on the Wilkes’ sidelines, he
has led the Colonels to seven post-season playoff
berths. Over the past five seasons, Sheptock has
led Wilkes to a 41-23 record, highlighted by an
11-1 record in 2006.
In 2006 Sheptock was named the MAC and
AFCA Region 2 Coach of the Year after leading
Wilkes to an 11-1 record, a conference title, and a
berth in the NCAA Division III Championship. The
2005 season saw Sheptock guide the squad to
an overall record of 8-3 and a berth in the NCAA
Division III playoffs. For his efforts he was named
the Middle Atlantic Conference Coach of the
Year.
The Colonels have also earned a berth in the
ECAC Playoffs during two of the last six seasons,
including a 31-7 win over the United States
Merchant Marine Academy in the 2002 South
Atlantic title game. Wilkes also claimed an ECAC
Southeast championship in 1999.
Coming to Wilkes with former head coach Joe
DeMelfi in 1990, Sheptock was the defensive
coordinator and assistant head coach for the
Colonels from 1992 to 1995. During his tenure
as defensive coordinator, Sheptock turned the
Colonels into one of the top defensive teams in
the Middle Atlantic Conference.
Under Sheptock, who is a member of the
American Football Coaches Association and
served as chairperson of the MAC Football Games
Committee, the Colonels have had 109 players
named to the All-MAC teams, including 65 first
team selections. Sheptock has also coached 33
All-ECAC honorees, including two players of the
year, and four All-Americans.
4
A graduate of Bloomsburg University with a
degree in Business Administration/Accounting,
Sheptock played linebacker under DeMelfi while a
member of the Huskies football team.
A member of the NCAA Division II Team of the
Quarter Century (1973-97), Sheptock held school
records for tackles in a career (537), single season
(159) and single game (23), and career fumble
recoveries (12). The four-time Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference (PSAC) first team pick helped
Bloomsburg win the PSAC championship title and
earn a berh in the NCAA Division II semifinals in
1985.
Sheptock, a three-time All-American and AllEast honoree for the Huskies, was inducted into
the Bloomsburg Sports Hall of Fame in October of
1997 and was inducted into the College Football
Hall of Fame in July of 2007.
Frank, his wife, Lisa, and daughters, Nicole
and Kelly, reside in Berwick.
Mike McCRee
Assistant Head Coach
Wide Receivers
10th Year
McCree returns for his 10th season as assistant coach and will primarily work with the receivers this
season.
McCree was a standout linebacker for the Colonels during the early 1990s. A two-time MAC all-star,
he was named the team’s Defensive Most Valuable Player in 1993 after helping Wilkes rank first in
Division III in takeaways, and second in scoring defense.
He spent the 1994 season as an assistant coach at Wilkes after receiving his degree in business
administration from the university. He then moved on to Wyoming Seminary for three years. Prior to
returning to the Colonels staff, McCree spent one year as an assistant coach at Tunkhannock High
School.
Will Luca

Offensive Coordinator
2nd Year
Luca enters his second season on Sheptocks coaching staff as offensive coordinator. In his
first season with the program, he guided the Wilkes offense to 288.5 yards a game and 4.5 yards per
play. Two offensive players and three special teams performers were named all MAC under his guidance.
Luca comes from the University of Albany where he coached the tight ends, running backs and
outside linbebackers from 2005-2007. Prior to Albany he was at Moravian from 2003-05 where he
was the offensive line coach. Moravian won the ECAC championship in 2004. Before Moravian he
spent a semester at Kutztown as the assistant offensive line coach. Luca graduated from Kutztown

8
2009 Outlook
9
Wilkes University head football coach
Frank Sheptock has seen his Colonels go 4-6 the
past two seasons, but believes he may have the
depth and experience to work themselves back
into MAC contention.
The Colonels have 34 returning players
which include nine starters on offense and six
on defense. Not only does Wilkes have a strong
nucleus on both sides of the ball, they are also
returning nearly every coach from last season
which means Sheptock’s system is already in
place. “This is the second year we pretty much
have everybody in place staff wise,” Sheptock
said. “Last year we were replacing a lot of key
positions, so this year we hope the experience
carries over.”
Back for the Colonels is quarterback Rob
Johnson, who will be playing his final season at
Wilkes. In his first year as a starter, Johnson
completed 145-263 passes for 1,747 yards with
19 touchdowns. The Bridgewater, N.J. native
ranked fourth in the league in passing yards per
game and was second in touchdowns.
Johnson will have Jordan D’Emilio and Gennaro
Zangardi to throw to as D’Emilio caught 25 passes for 313 yards and three touchdowns, while
Zangardi caught 20 balls for 274 yards and three
scores last year. “Both Jordan and Gennaro
could be dynamic players for us this year,” Sheptock said.
The Colonels also return of slew of running
backs including sophomore Harry Reese, who
led the team with 44.5 yards a game last year
as well as Zachary Tivald, who led the team with
4.7 yards per carry. “It will be a very interesting
camp in the backfield this year. We have a lot of
returning guys who all have talent. They are a
very hard working group,” said Sheptock.
Perhaps most importantly, Sheptock will
have all but one offensive lineman returning for
Johnson and the rest of the backfield. “We are
more solid on offense this year and we have
more players with experience under fire. We lost
some close games and we need to learn from
those types of losses,” Sheptock said.
The only holes Sheptock will have to fill
are four-time all-MAC performer Josh George,
who anchored the offensive line as well as wide
receiver Jason Prushinski, who was third in the
conference in receiving yards per game with 64.1
10
to go along with six touchdowns.
Not only will the offense be solid this year,
but the Colonels will also be counting on the services of sophomore kicker Chris Horn, who was
one of the best in the conference last season. In
his first collegiate season, Horn was a perfect 9-9
in field goals and 23-25 in extra points. He led
the team with 50 points and three of his nine field
goals were from 40 yards or further which included a career long of 47 yards.
While the offense looks to pick up where
it left off last season, the defense will rely on an
experienced secondary led by Corey Gilroy and
and Kevin Gerhart.
“We have a lot of experience returning
in the secondary. They developed into a very
strong unit last year,” Sheptock said.
Returning at defensive back is Gerhart,
Gilroy and Darnell Corbin, who have been mainstays in the defensive backfield for numerous
seasons. Gilroy is a three-year starter, while
Corbin has started the last two seasons and
served as team captain last year.
The Defensive line will feature Chris Swinarski and Jimmy Moore, who combined for 14
sacks and 49 tackles last year. “We have a good
nucleus on defense, we just need to find our
depth,” Sheptock said.
“Our main priority on defense is stopping
the run. We had two games start to finish where
we stopped the run and struggled in the other
games. Not being able to stop the run is vastly
different than what we are accustomed to,” Sheptock said.
The Colonels will start the 2009 season
with back-to-back home games against Muhlenberg and Montclair State on Sept. 5 and 12.
They will head to Newport News, Va. on Sept.
26 to face Christopher Newport for their first road
game, followed by an Oct. 3 date with Albright in
Reading, Pa.
Wilkes will also host Lebanon Valley on
Oct. 10 as well as FDU-Florham and Widener
on Oct. 24 and Nov. 7. “We are playing a lot of
successful programs. We like the competition.
Muhlenberg and Christopher Newport both won
their conference championships last season so
those two teams will really give us a gauge on
where we are.”
