Editor’s Note: Since the first Red Cross JHS Baseball booklet in 2000, many people
have contributed articles and information. It is not the contributors’ intention to
misrepresent information or to omit names and facts. If you are aware of any errors
or omissions in the 2016 edition, or if you have suggestions or additions for future
books, please contact [email protected] or Coach Lowery at 304-261-9555.
The 2016 Cougar Media Guide is produced by the JHS Baseball Program and is
printed by The Journal News. The Cougar Media Guide is grateful to many people,
including Kate Tennant, Michele Maiden, Bev Crockett, Anita Moreno, and other
parents who provided photos. Special thanks to Tricia Grove for editing; Coach Cross
and Bob Everton for providing player statistics; the JHS Baseball Boosters for
financial support, and finally to Annette Brennan who assisted in the creation of this
book.
The 2016 Cougar Media Guide is
dedicated to the
Memory of Curt Bury
A loyal JHS Baseball fan, game statistician and
home game announcer and score keeper.
The first Cougar Media Guide was published in 2000, showcasing the
1999 Jefferson High School Baseball Season. It was produced by the American
Red Cross, Jefferson County Chapter for two reasons: to raise money for the
Red Cross by selling advertisements; and to provide a game worksheet for the
JHS Baseball statistician and public announcer, Curt Bury. Computers weren’t
common at that time, so Mr. Bury recorded all the stats for each game by hand.
He travelled with the team as the statistician; and at our home games, he was
also our press box announcer.
Mr. Bury worked for IBM in the Advanced System Planning. He was
an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox creating a Stats computer program for them.
To show their gratitude, the
Red Sox gave Bury a lifetime
pass to all their games. He
often invited Coach Lowery,
to the games. Bury graduated
from Dartmouth College in
the Class of 1953, married,
and has two children, Jerri
Bell and Betsy Bury. In 2007,
Mr. Bury retired from the Red
Cross and was recognized for
his work on their WV
Curt Bury and John Lowery at the first Disaster Relief Program.
National’s game upon returning to D.C. in He died in Bowie,
Spring 2005 Maryland on April 18, 2015.
Kathe Witt took over the Cougar Media Guide in 2008, and she has
continued the tradition to this day. When the Red Cross ended their sponsorship
of the book in 2011, the production cost of the book was taken over by the JHS
Baseball Boosters and the book continued under a new name – the “Cougar
Media Guide.” The JHS baseball content was, and still is, the property and
responsibility of the Head Coach of Baseball Program. The Game Worksheet
in the Media Guide remains as a tribute to Mr. Bury.
The Jefferson High School Baseball Program extends its deepest
sympathies to Mr. Bury’s family for his dedication and pioneering efforts with
our program.

Coach Lowery and the Jefferson
Baseball Cougars
Coach John Lowery, Sr. is in his
46th season as a Head Coach at the
high school level (1971-2016).
Coach Lowery’s current
record at JHS is 1203 wins with 300
losses and 3 ties. His overall record,
including two years at the nowdefunct Harpers Ferry High School
is 1222 wins, 319 losses, 3 ties.
According
to
the
National
Federation of State High School
Associations’ (NFHS) Record
Book, he currently ranks 3rd among
high school coaches All-Time and
2nd among active coaches with at
least 500 wins. With his game win against Freedom High School on March 14, 2008,
he became the 10th high school coach in the nation to achieve the 1,000 career win mark,
and the first West Virginia coach to reach 1,000 wins in any sport. Lowery’s 1,500th
game coached for JHS was a win on May 7, 2014 against Hampshire High School.
He earned his 1,200 career victory in the second game of a double header
against Moorefield (WV) High School. The Cougars (15-1) earned a 6-0 win in both
of the games. JHS Sophomore, Austin Cross, pitched a two hit shut-out with no walks
and seven strikeouts in the second game against Moorefield. Interestingly, in 1971,
Austin’s maternal grandfather, John Milton, was a varsity player on the very first high
school baseball team that John Lowery coached at Harpers Ferry (WV) High School.
The Jefferson Varsity Baseball Program currently ranks 14th in the nation for
the most State Championships won (NFHS), 12th for the most wins All-Time (NFHS),
and 21st in the National High School Baseball Coaches Association’s final national
rankings (NHSBCA) for 2015.
In 2002, Coach Lowery was inducted into the NFHS Hall of Fame. In 2003,
he was inducted as a member of the Inaugural Class of the WV Baseball Coaches Hall
of Fame. In December, 2009,
Coach Lowery was inducted into

2016 Pre-Season Outlook
The Cougars return a solid group of experienced players from last year’s
State Championship team. The key to success for this year’s squad will be to
establish their own identity. Senior leadership, staying in the moment, focus,
and hard work must be constants as the season unfolds. A one day at a time
approach will allow the team to grow and to, hopefully, improve throughout the
season. As always, the Cougars will test themselves against a formidable
schedule. A look at the team by position follows:
Pitching:
A group of pitchers with experience return to lead the pitching staff. Firstteam All-State lefthander Andy Disque has graduated, but seniors Brad Davis (LHP),
Charlie Barnholt (RHP), Jordan Beans (RHP), and Grant Reed (RHP) will be joined by
juniors Austin Cross (LHP), Austin Bulman (RHP), Dylan Carroll (RHP) and Dalton
Jamison (RHP) to give the staff quality arms plus depth. Returning pitchers accounted
for 29 of the Cougars’ wins last year. Add developing sophomore right-hander David
Dinges to this group and the Cougars’ pitching staff, hopefully, will be a team strength.
Junior Brady Hamilton, Dalton Dodson, Alex Tennant and Cody Keiper, plus a number
of promising arms at the JV level will continue to develop giving promise to a bright
future.
Catching: The Cougars return three catchers with Varsity experience. Joe Mills
(Sr.), Dylan Mackey (Sr.), and Bailey Dodson (Jr.) give the Cougars strength at this
important position. Transfer Nick Chorney (Sr.) will provide added depth and strength.
Soph. Danny Carroll will round out this group with an eye toward developing his skills
for the future.
Infield: Two starters have graduated; third baseman Michael Tennant plus the
program’s all-time hit leader, four-year starter, and All-State player, Andrew King.
Shortstop Paul Witt (Sr.) and first baseman Charlie Barnholt (Sr.) are returning starters.
Solid and capable players are ready to step in and fill the openings at third and second.
At third base, Grant Reed (Sr.), Dalton Dodson (Jr.) and Austin Bulman (Jr.) are
available. Alex Tennant (Jr.) and Mason Steeley (Jr.) will provide quality play at
second, as well as be available to step in at shortstop if needed. First base will have
Austin Cross (Jr.) available when Barnholt is pitching. Also at first are Hunter Palmer
(Sr.), Brady Hamilton (Jr.) and David Dinges (Soph.).
Outfield: The Outfield will feature three new starters. All-State honorable mention
players Brody Price and Will Oliver are gone. Cameron Alvarez, the team’s fastest
player, will step in at center. Many possibilities exist as a number of players will
compete for playing time at the corner outfield positions. Josh Colvin (Sr.), Cole
Walker (Jr.), Austin Bulman (Jr.), Austin Cross (Jr.), Nick Chorney (Sr.), Dylan Carroll
(Jr.), Bailey Dodson (Jr.), Dalton Jamison (Jr.), Brad Davis (Sr.), and Danny Brennan
(Soph.) are all available as outfielders. Colvin, Walker and Brennan will also provide
options in centerfield.
In Conclusion: The Cougars will again face a challenging schedule. The
EPAC will provide tough competition locally, while the remainder of the
schedule is designed to ready the team for the challenges and rigors of the post
season. Jefferson will field a team with a solid nucleus of veteran and
experienced players. The task at hand will be the willingness to work hard each
day, sacrifice for each other, and to make the commitment that the pursuit of
excellence requires.

…The West Virginia Sports Writers Association finally gave
a name to its high school baseball Player of the Year award.
It will be known as the John Lowery Award, after a vote during
the body’s semiannual meeting in Wheeling.
“I’m truly humbled by the honor the Sports Writers’
Association has given me,” Lowery said. A player from the
2016 season will be the first to receive the John Lowery
Award.
Cougar Facts: Did You Know?
FACTS ABOUT COUGAR INDIVIDUALS…
 Flip Dorsey is the only Cougar to hit for the cycle (single, double, triple and home
run in a single game). He did it in the first game ever played at present day Sager
Field.
 The Cougars first no-hitter was thrown by lefty Pat Mahoney vs. Clarke County
in 1974.
 Larry Reed owns the Cougars only perfect game – a 5-inning gem vs. St. Maria
Goretti in 1983.
 Jeff Reynolds, Richie Chrisman, David Diehl and Jimmy Rhodes have the most
career home runs at Jefferson, with 18. John Lowery, Jr. owns the season mark
with 12.
 Tom Diehl owns the single season mark for steals with 49. He did it as a
sophomore.
 Pat Dorsey (’73) scored the first run for the Cougars.
 Jr. Grantham and Rusty Lowery are the only Cougars to hit home runs from both
sides of the plate. Both were second baseman.
 The Cougars turned their first triple play against Petersburg High School on
March 21, 2008. At the top of the 6th inning with runners on first and second base
for Petersburg, a line drive was hit to Trevor Poe, who caught it for the first
down. Poe stepped on the second base for the second out and then threw the ball
to Holden Carroll at first base for the third out. Tyler Burlett was the Cougar
Pitcher.
 Dennis Johnson hit the first Cougar grand slam.
 Of the first 150 games that Jefferson won, the Mahoney brothers (Jerry, Pat, Jay
and John) were the winning pitchers in 75 of them.
 Cougar pitchers with at least 20 or more career wins include John Mahoney, Jay
Mahoney, Josh Simons, Trad Sokol, Bret Lewis, Mike Nagle, Mike Boyd, Jimmy
Rhodes, Josh Cenate, Tanner Everton and Chris Payne. Cenate has the most
career wins with 35.
 In a five-year period (1996-2000), Josh Cenate '99 (35-4) and Jimmy Rhodes '00
(34-1) had a combined record of 69-5.
 Jimmy Rhodes is the only pitcher to pitch in four State Tournament games. He
was the winning pitcher in two final games and one semifinal.
 Bret Lewis ('93) finished his career at 26-1, and went on to pitch at the University
of Indiana in the Big Ten.
 Josh Cenate is the highest draft pick ever selected from a W.V. high school (32nd
player overall). Matt Carlisle, a right-handed pitcher, pitched in the Division II
College World Series for Longwood. Matt also pitched a no-hitter vs. Handley
his senior year, but the Cougars lost the game.
 Four ex-Cougars, the late Pat Dorsey (’73), David Diehl ('79), Tom Diehl (’81),
Scott Bradford ('99) are members of the Shepherd College Hall of Fame.
 Jeff Reynolds (’78) was inducted into the Potomac State College Athletic Hall of
Fame in March, 2002.
 The only three Cougars to hit .500 or better for the season were Steve Diehl
(1977), Dylan Hetzel (1998), and Brett Moreland (2009).
 When Tanner Everton (2011) and Logan Johnson (2011) were awarded the
Desmond White Memorial Award in 2011, they joined former Cougars: Josh
Cenate in 1999 Jimmy Rhodes in 2000, Ryan Lipscomb in 2001, Jawaan Holmes
in ’03, and Josh Simons in ’05. Desmond White was a Journal Sports Writer who
was killed in a car accident in 1998. Josh Cenate was the first to receive the award.
 In 2011 senior Logan Johnson set a school record for runs scored in a season as
he crossed the plate 59 times.
 John Starliper, the first baseman for the 1974 Cougars Varsity, was the Asst. Video
Director for the 2007 Super Bowl Champion, Indianapolis Colts.
 John Servis, Kentucky Derby and Preakness Winner Smarty Jones’ trainer, played
JV ball for Jefferson in 1976.
 When brothers John and Charlie Lowery formed the battery for the Cougars in the
1988 State Championship game vs. DuPont, it set a precedent that has never been
duplicated before or since.
 Two former Cougars are now MDs. Dr. Bobby Jones, who played shortstop in
the mid-seventies, practices in Charles Town, while Dr. Ted Shuff, who caught in
the mid-eighties, practices in Charleston, WV.
 Number 14 is retired. Jeff Reynolds (’78) wore this number, and his number was
retired because he was the first former Cougar to play professionally.
 Number 24 is retired. Andrew Rotruck (2008) wore this number. He passed away
on September 2, 2008.
 Number 21 is retired. Coach Bruce Davidson wore this number. He passed away
on November 29, 2010.
FACTS ABOUT COUGAR TEAMS…
 The 2015 team goes down as one of the best ever at Jefferson (37-2), with a .949win percentage that ranks them first all-time in school history, just edging the
1992 team [.946] by a few points. The biggest reason this group ended better than
all the rest is the pitching staff, which posted a 1.23 earned run average in 39
games.
 The Cougars played all their home games in their first season (1973) at Leetown.
Not until spring 1974 did the Cougars start playing on what is now Sager Field
 The Cougars appearances in 15 State Championship games are the most ever for
a WV High School team in baseball
 The Cougars have won State Championships in five different decades.
 The Cougars’ 5 straight appearances (1997-2001) in State Championship games
is also a West Virginia record.
 The Jefferson High School Baseball Program achieved their 1,000 th victory on
April 22, 2008 against Hedgesville High School. The score was 5-2.
 The most home runs hit in a season by the Cougars is 41, in 1999; the second is
38 by the Cougars in 2011.
 The Cougars' longest winning streak is 29 games. The longest losing streak is
four games (twice in 1974 & once in 2004). The best start at the beginning of a
season is 15-0 in 2009.
 The longest game the Cougars have ever played is 12 innings (twice). The first,
vs. Warren County, occurred in the second game of the school's history; the other
was vs. Science Hill, Tenn. in 1998. The Cougars won each game.
 Three games in one day. On six different occasions the Cougars have played three
games in one day. The results of those games were:
 (Apr. 29, 1978 at Buckhannon): Jefferson 4, Morgantown 0; Jefferson 11,
Buckhannon 7; Jefferson 10, Morgantown 5
 (Apr. 11, 1979 at Sager Field): Jefferson 6, Hedgesville 3; Berkeley Springs

The Cougars were no-hit by Bishop Walsh in the '80s, but managed to win the
game.
In 1990, the future St. Louis Cardinal Pitcher, Garrett Stephenson, pitched against
the Cougars in a pre-season scrimmage. Stephenson pitched at Boonsboro High
School
The Cougars have played against nine players who eventually made the Major
Leagues: John Kruk (Keyser); Scott Bullett and Doug Creek (both from
Martinsburg); Travis Harper (from Circleville); Mark Teixiera (from Mt. St. Joe
in Baltimore); late Nick Adenhart (from Williamsport) who pitched with Goretti
against the Cougar; Josh Judy (University High in Morgantown, WV); Josh Edgin
(from Mercersburg Academy); and Jedd Gyorko (University High in
Morgantown).
Teixiera, now with the World Champion NY Yankees, hit a home run in the 2006
Major League All-Star Game while playing for the Texas Rangers of the
American League. In 1998, playing for Mt. St. Joe, he hit a home run against the
Cougars.
In 2006, on our way to the State Tournament, former NY Mets RH pitcher, Toby
Stoner, threw batting practice to the Cougars at Garrett Community College.
Stoner was called up to the Mets in their 2009 season.
Over the years, Jefferson has played teams from fourteen different states
(Connecticut, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Kentucky, New
York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee
and West Virginia), plus the District of Columbia.
The Cougars have played games in 9 different states: West Virginia, New York,
Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, South Carolina, North Carolina,
Ohio, and also the District of Columbia.
Jimbo Fisher, Head Coach of the 2013 Florida State BCS National Championship,
pitched against JHS while playing for Clarksburg Liberty Harrison in the early
1980’s. The game was played at Sager and was won by the Cougars.
Clemson wide receiver, Hunter Renfrow, was starting outfielder for Socastee
High (SC) in 2013 when the Cougars played Socastee in the Mingo Bay Classic.
During the 2015 National Championship Football game between Clemson and
Alabama, Renfrow caught two touchdown passes for the Tigers in a game won by
the Crimson Tide. His father, Tim, is one of the directors of the Mingo Bay
Classic, an event that JHS has been playing in for over a decade.

Celebrating 43 years…
F
or over four decades, volunteers have ensured that Sager Field is always in
superlative playing condition. The field is named after Pete Sager who was
always ready to make sure the field was playable for practice and games. Our
field crews follow his example and have a lot of fun and dedication maintaining the
field before games and on weekends. We believe that an excellent playing field
makes the young men feel proud about their role on the team and inspires them to do
their best. We hope that our team has a game-winning home field advantage because
our field is in exactly the same condition for all practices and games. That tradition
continued this past year as our field days were again a tremendous success. We rebuilt
the pitching mound, and laid sod, re-laid the running back. Replacing our field lights
and adding an in-ground watering system are
goals for next year. The Andrew Rotruck
Training Facility continues to be our Cougar
Clubhouse as workshops and practices occur in
the building. The Charles Town Cannons have
relocated to Purcellville, VA, so the field usage
in the summer will revert back to local teams.
New volunteers are welcome to join our field
crew. Experience is not necessary as our field
manager will happily provide “on-the-jobtraining.” If you can help for a few hours here
and there, especially after games on Sager or the
GTE field, please locate Pappy on the field and
Ron “Pappy” Kelchner
let him know.

CHARLESTON — With wins over Greenbrier East and then Nitro in the state finals,
the 2015 Cougars on Saturday claimed the school’s 11th champion- ship, and earned the
redemption they had long been seeking.
But it was the team’s last loss of the season that proved to be a turning point.
Back on April 24, the Cougars lost 9-7 after the visiting team came back from a seven-run
deficit with two outs in the seventh inning. The loss came at the hands of eventual Class
AA champion Bridgeport.
The game instantly became another motivating point for the Cougars — a driving
factor through Saturday. “The kids came out the next day and beat Greenbrier East, 12-1,
and they never looked back,” said Jefferson coach John Lowery. “They never let that
loss bother them. They responded to that. It got our attention on the fact that we needed to
stay with it until the final out is recorded.” Jefferson went on to win its next 19 games,
securing the 11th championship in school history Saturday morning with a victory over
Nitro at Appalachian Power Park.
Brad Davis carried a perfect game into the fifth inning and went the distance to
lead the Cougars to the state title. He gave up four hits and struck out six. “It’s unreal,” Davis
said after the win. “Just to be out there on the mound in the state championship game is
an amazing feeling. Luckily, I had all my pitches working, so that really helped me out.”
With the potential tying run on second and no outs, Davis responded. He forced a fly-out, a
pop-out and then struck out Nitro’s Levi Kelly to end the title game in fitting fashion.
A key point came when the school’s all-time hits leader, Andrew King, who has averaged
more than 40 hits a season through his four-year
career, put down a bunt which forced a Nitro (2511) error, eventually allowing Jefferson to score
its only two runs.
“There’s a guy who has the all-time hits
record and he gets a bunt down that creates the
turmoil,” Lowery said. “It turned out to be,
probably, the biggest play in the game.”
Chase Crockett, Michael Tennant, Will Oliver,
King and Paul Witt all recorded base hits in the
title game. Witt led the team with a .458 batting
average and was named EPAC player of the year.

staff, which posted a 1.23 earned run average in 39 games.
Davis [0.76 ERA], Andy Disque [1.10], Dylan Carroll [0.61], Charlie Barnholt [1.25],
Austin Cross [2.28] and Austin Bulman [2.16] all contributed heavily to the overall
success.
Not only were the arms great, but the guys fielding the ball behind them recorded a
.964 fielding percentage, making it extremely difficult for opposing teams to string
together big innings.
“As far as accomplishments and the numbers they’ve been able to put up you would
have to say this is the best staff,” Lowery said. “This is as deep as any staff we’ve ever
had. I never remember having eight guys, but we’ve had some other good ones over the
years.”
The depth the Cougars had this season was second to none, Lowery said. Not only
with the pitching staff, but the team had players that could fill in at nearly any position
and wouldn’t miss a beat.
“When Witt went out we had a shortstop who came in and turned some double plays,”
Lowery said. “If somebody had to be out or for whatever reason, we were always able
to maintain.”
In the semi-final win over Greenbrier East, the Cougars fell behind, 4-1, before
coming back in the last three innings to get the win, 6-4.
Disque went 3.2 innings in one of his shorter outings of the season, but Cross came
in and held the Spartans down while the offense erupted.
The Cougars’ pitching staff put together 15 shutouts during 2015 and Jefferson placed
four players on the all-state tournament team — Tennant, Davis, Witt and Brody Price.
“That ballpark [Appalachian Power Park] is built for the type of team we have,”
Lowery said. “We have speed in the outfield, guys who can go run balls down, in a park
like that fly balls are just long outs.”
Davis ended up forcing 12 fly-ball-outs in the title game, which was part of his plan
coming in, he said.
“Our outfield was up to the task and ran them down,” Lowery said. “Most of the catches
were routine in nature, but they still had to catch them. They’ve never played in front
of a crowd like that, but they did a good job of focusing in and staying with it.”
Lowery said the coaching staff knew Nitro would be aggressive from watching them
play Wheeling Park in the semi-final round and it ended up working in the Cougars
favor come game time.
“They hit some balls well,” he said, “but they hit them right at us.”
Jefferson has now made 15 title game appearances — only finishing runner-up in 1984,
1997, 2000 and 2001. This season marked the 23rd regional title and the 29th sectional
title in school history.
All the accolades seem to be even sweeter after the team fell short last year in the
sectional round, but Jefferson responded in championship form, and used last year’s
disappointment as this year’s motivation.
“I’m especially tickled for this group,” Lowery said.
“We had a great team last year and couldn’t get out of the sectional. That really stung
them and motivated them this year. These guys responded the way you like to see young
people respond.”
After every setback, the Cougars continued to push forward. Now they can stake their
claim as one of the best ever to wear the and couldn’t get out of the sectional. That

After every setback, the Cougars continued to push forward. Now they can stake their
claim as one of the best ever to wear the maroon and gold.

Former Cougars bring back fond memories
Zach Cumberland, Spirit of Jefferson Advocate
Wed, August 19,2015 article and photo reprinted with permission
SHENANDOAH JUNCTION – There’s one contest in Shenandoah Junction each
year when the outcome doesn’t matter — and that’s the annual alumni baseball
game at Sager Field.
Every third Saturday in August the game is played and this time around, about 30
former players returned to reminisce about the glory days.
Legendary Jefferson coach John Lowery, the all-time winningest coach in West
Virginia history, looked on from his chair on the sidelines and shared a laugh while
watching some his former players take the field.
“Each year it’s fun,” Lowery said. “You get some of the same guys that come back
and you always get some new guys that come back, which makes it fun. One guy
has been in the Navy for 30 years and it’s his first time back. It’s great to see when
they come back.”
Prior to the game, a meet and greet was held for players and their families to reunite
— former players dating all the way back to 1973 have played in previous games.
Most players involved in this year’s games were from the 1980’s up to the present
time.
Some just come for the camaraderie or to recall their playing days and some throw
nearly as good as they once did.
In the past, the Jefferson alumni game has welcomed returning players from as far
away as Connecticut and Georgia. Sometimes the younger players have to pull
double duty to help fill out the rosters.
When the former players reconvene — they organize the format of the game, but
there’s one position that isn’t too popular.
“Catching gets to be a little rough on the legs behind the plate,” Lowery said. “Not
many are willing to get behind the plate, but some of the guys just come out to be
around each other, which is what it’s all about anyway — for the guys to reconnect
a little bit.”
Whether players return from the Secret Service or come back for the first time in 30
years, Lowery said, it’s still amazing the way some of them can still move around.
“You can see the ones that are still in pretty good shape,” he said. “I thought they
swung the bats pretty well. Some of the guys weren’t just lobbing it in there, they
were throwing it in there pretty good.”
Kathe Witt, involved with the Jefferson High boosters, was the original impetus
behind the game starting nine years ago, when it was first mentioned, Lowery said.
This year, the alumni game chairman, Lee Fletcher, stepped in to help out.
Community members certainly hope the alumni game can be something that
continues to grow and attract interest from all over.
“Sometimes you kind of lose sight of how many guys have really been involved,”
Lowery said. “It always makes you feel good when they come back and talk about
the things that happened during their playing careers.”
The 2015 Cougars claimed the 11th state championship in program history, but
more than just wins and losses, the alumni game reminds former coaches and players that they’ve been a part of something bigger than themselves.
“They always say, when you talk about your teams 20 years down the road, and you
look and see that all these guys have been successful,” Lowery said, “you can look
up in the stands and see their families.”
Some former players bring their kids over to introduce them to Lowery for the first
time. “It’s just good to see that their lives are progressing and that they’re happy. It
makes it all worthwhile.
“Having a couple of the guys come back and say, ‘playing baseball was one of the
highlights of going through school’, that always makes me feel good.”
The alumni remain the heartbeat of the program, Lowery said. “They provide
support and they’ve done the work over the years to help us get to where we’ve
gone as a program.
“Some of them are already talking about the third weekend in August next year.
It’s just a gratifying feeling, really.”

Cougars rank 21st Nationally

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION - Jefferson picked up a new bit of notoriety this past
week to go with the program’s 11 Class AAA state baseball championship. The cougars
are ranked 21st nationally in the National High School Baseball Coaches Association’s
Baseball American Top 50 Ranking.
The Cougars are the highest-ranked team in the Mid-Atlantic region of the country
(James Madison of Vienna, VA is 24th) and just one of two teams from non-warmweather areas to be so highly ranked (Archbishop Moeller of Cincinnati is 13 th).
Jefferson wrapped up its season with a program-best 37-2 record, winning 2-1 over
Nitro in the state title game two weeks ago at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston.
The cougars made two first-inning rans hold up behind pitcher Brad Davis.
“I think anytime you get into a national poll and are considered among the best teams
in the country is pretty nice,” Jefferson coach John Lowery said. “When someone
thinks highly enough of you to rank you 21st, it’s pretty exciting.”
The cougars were previously unranked in the poll and are among 22 teams in a similar
mode. Cy-Ranch of Cypress, Texas, is one spot ahead of Jefferson and is the highestrated newcomer to the ranking. The overall No.1 team is Parkview of Liburn, Georgia,
finished its season at 34-2. Liburn is followed second through fifth by Bishop Gorman
of Las Vegas (33-3), Venice Florida (29-3), Oxford, Mississippi (33-1), and Canyon
del Oro of Oro Valley, Arizona (32-3)
JHS Head JV Baseball
Coach is seeking the
District 66 Seat in the
House of Delegates!
David Dinges is running for office because of his
passion for workers’ rights and for our public education system. “We’ve got to
take care of our educators. They are impacting our kids every day. I will do
everything I can as a delegate to advocate for WV’s students, educators and
school personnel,” Dinges explained to Spirit reporter, Bonnie Williamson (see
Wed, Feb 24, 2016, page 2). A proud union member, if elected he will initiate
discussions to repeal the right-to-work law which he feels will lower wages,
benefits, and pensions as unions lose power to negotiate. Unions, he says, ensures
training, benefits, and retirement for workers as well as drive up wages across the
board. If you want to learn more about Coach Dinges’ positions, please contact
him at (215)459-4008 or after a JV game!
37 Years Ago We Won Our
First State Championship
On June 1st 1979, Coach Lowery and Assistant Coaches Densil Nibert
and Bob Rizzo led the Cougars to their first WV State Championship. Their 70 shutout of Wayne High School culminated a 35-4 season. The Cougars won
their way to the AAA final four in Parkersburg by defeating Martinsburg and
Philip Barbour High Schools. The semifinal against Parkersburg South took two
days to play, since their game was suspended by rain and then completed the
next afternoon. JHS scored 5 runs in the top of the 10th inning to break a 1-1 tie,
and then held off a Parkersburg South rally to win a 6-4 extra-inning thriller.
John Mahoney pitched the entire 10 innings for the Cougars, who then had to
turn around and play the championship final the same night.
In the championship contest, Mike Nagle and Kevin Wilt combined to
shut out Wayne, scattering 8 hits, backed up by some superior fielding. The
Cougars had only five hits, but bunched three of them, plus a stolen base and a
sacrifice fly to score five runs and ice the win. As in recent years, the Cougars
in 1979 used speed and heady base-running to confuse their opposition all
season. Six Jefferson players were named to the 1979 all-tournament team:
Dean Ballenger (father of our 2000 team’s Brandon), Richie Chrisman, David
and Tommy Diehl, John Mahoney and Mike Nagle.
Back Row: Coach Densil Nibert, Daryl Whittington, Richie Chrisman, Kevin
Wilt, Freddie Winston, Todd Magaha, Mark Rudolph, Keith Carter, Charles
Cook, Head Coach Lowery
Middle Row: John Mahoney, David Diehl, Mike Walker, Billy Myers, Tony
Smith, Dean Ballenger
Front Row: Tim Stride, Chuck Holmes, Kelvin Curry, Tommy Diehl, Mike
Nagle, Tim Nicewarner.
Also on the 1979 team, but not present for the picture: Barry Reed, Tim
Anders, Dave Noll, Melvin Mauck, and Brian Jones

Garland Richard “Brownie” Chrisman, Sr.
On November 21, 2015, Garland Richard “Brownie”
Chrisman, Sr. passed away. He was a graduate of Charles Town
High School and a member of the Charles Town Moose Lodge
#948. He coached for Charles Town and Jefferson County Little
League and was actively involved with the Ranson Parks and
Recreation.
Mr. Chrisman had two sons who both played with the JHS Baseball
Team. Jim “Buck” Chrisman was the 1989 State Player of the Year and was on
the All-State 1st team in 1989, and with Special honorable mention in 1987. Jim
signed with the Kansas City Royals reaching the Double A level.
Richie Chrisman achieved 2nd Team All-State in 1980, and tied as AllTime Home Run leader with David Diel, Jimmy Rhodes, and Jeff Reynolds.
They tallied 18 home runs each.
Danny Eugene Smith
On April 27, 2015, Danny Eugene Smith, founder of the Anvil
Restaurant in Harpers Ferry, WV passed away. Danny graduated
from Forest Hill High School in Summers County, WV in 1966 and

of the Harpers Ferry Men’s Cooking Club, Loyal Order of the
Moose, Elks Club and Sleepy Hollow Golf Club. He was also a
member of the Fairview Baptist Church in Forest Hill, WV.
He will join his son, J.B. Smith, who passed away on August 15, 1998.
J.B. played with the Cougars in the mid ‘90s and was part of the “3 Peat Era” –
when the JHS Baseball Program won 3 State Championships in a row. An annual
J.B. Smith Memorial Golf Tournament has raised $400,000 for many charities
in the area, as well as for the JHS Baseball Program. A final tournament was
held on Friday, May 23, 2014. The J.B. Smith Rotary Club of Charles Town will
continue to disburse over $100,000 through the Eastern WV Community
