Hollyburn 101
Autumn programming is in full swing at Hollyburn which is a
time when the activity levels at the Club are at their highest.
When I speak with fellow members they often have inquiries
that range from information on programming numbers to
membership activity. Fall programming enrolments provide a
great snapshot of the many activities that go on in the Club, so
I thought I’d summarize a few of the facts and figures that tell
the story of the Club and the membership.
THE FACILITY:
The main clubhouse of Hollyburn is approximately 190,000
square feet, there are 25 tennis courts (12 indoor, 8 outdoor,
3 grass and 2 clay) and associated access and parking stalls
all located on a 49 acre property which is situated between
two creeks. The main pool hosts 200,000 US gallons of water,
there are 20,500 US Gallons in the leisure pool and 1,625
US Gallons in the hot tub, all of which require about $9,600
worth of pool chemicals in a year. Our annual natural gas
budget to operate all of the facilities is currently $216,000
while our electrical budget is $250,000. Our laundry supplies
cost $30,000 per year while spa supplies cost $36,000 per
year. This is partly due to the fact that we clean a whopping
728,000 towels a year (2,000 per day) and supply 25,000
men’s and women’s razors (combined) a year and 600 cans
of shaving cream. We certainly are a clean and well groomed
8
membership.
The club is maintained and operated by some 220 employees,
where Jan Freeman is the longest serving employee with 31
years of service at Hollyburn.
THE MEMBERSHIP
A question that I frequently hear is “How many members are
there in Hollyburn?” Hollyburn has a number of categories
of memberships but the best way to describe the majority
of the members that use the Club from day to day are
Regular members. The number of Regular memberships has
remained remarkably consistent over the past five to ten
years. There are 1,750 Regular memberships in the Club, we
add approximately 50 Regular memberships a year (and are on
track to do so again this year) and we experience 55 retired/
resigned memberships per year. A waitlist kicks-in at 1,775
Regular memberships which means we have a healthy well
managed membership balance. But Regular memberships don’t
tell the whole story, with each regular member there is often
a spouse and/or dependants and at Hollyburn there are 2,839
of those people. So simply accounted for, there are a total of
4,589 members who can regularly use the club.
In addition to the Regular memberships there are Senior
memberships – where many of those members do also
regularly use and participate in the activities of the Club, as
well as other categories such as Non-resident members, Social
members, etc.). There are 1,087 people with non-regular
memberships and an additional 1,812 folks linked to those
categories of membership, which according to my calculations
adds up to a grand sum of 7,488 people with some sort of
membership relationship with Hollyburn.
As we are celebrating Hollyburn’s 50th year, it is notable
that there are 28 original members at Hollyburn (through
20 memberships), not including second and third generation
members.
PROGRAMMING
This fall the enrollment numbers for youth programming
include 370 minor hockey players (plus 18 others through
cookie monsters, etc.) 125 youth in skating, 248 in tennis, 90
in badminton, 215 in swim lessons, 99 in swim team and 87 in
karate, just to mention some of the activity hubs for youth.
Key areas of activity for adults include 210 men and 60 women
in hockey, 136 tennis players who are organized in group
lessons, too many old guys like yours truly who wear Speedo
jammers to swim laps and over 80 curlers (including 32 new
curlers this year). Notably, the new fitness center currently
accommodates 3,500 visitors per week who contribute to an
annual fitness programming and personal training revenue
account of $1,000,000.
FOOD & BEVERAGE
There are three areas that contribute to the Food & Beverage
sales in the Club: gross sales for the Bar & Grill at $2.2 million,
the Bistro at $775,000 and Catering which grossed $900,000
in sales. The Bistro sold 11,964 pizza slices, 9,446 vitamin
waters and a banana bending 5,018 Arnold smoothies over the
last 12 months. In the Bar & Grill for the last year, members
consumed 6,742 grind salads, 5,280 clubhouse sandwiches,
17,000 kid’s meals, 42,000 lbs. of potatoes and 36,714 chicken
wings for Wing Wednesday, all of which were washed down
with 4,900 glasses of J. Lohr red, 5,200 glasses of Stoneleigh
white (not including bottle and half litre sales) and 560 pints
of beer per week - which equates to 1 leisure pool full of beer
every 6 years.
There you have it, Hollyburn at a glance where for the past 50
years at least 28 members can attest to the long term benefits
of maintaining their fitness, being well fed & hydrated and
staying clean and exceptionally groomed.

ESCAPE
FROM
ALCATRAZ
sHANE AND DEBBIE COLLINS
Dear Members,
On October the 1st , our 50th anniversary party, “Under The Palms” was held in the gymnasium
and what a night it was. The night was Vegas themed and really seemed to hit the mark with
all that attended. Entertainer Nearly Neil, who looks like and sings like Neil Diamond was
the entertainer and there were black jack, craps and roulette tables to keep everyone going
throughout the night. The feedback we received from members was overwhelmingly positive
and we will definitely be bringing this event back next year. It was a dress up, Black tie event,
no kids and it was a big hit. Circle October 1st in your calendars next year and be sure to attend.
Special thanks to Jenny Sanders, Alexandra Fischer and Kathryn Cowden for their hard work
and creativity in setting up the evening.

One of managements goals this year is to reach out to the members and get as much feedback
as possible on everything that is Hollyburn. We want feedback on programs, service, food and
beverage, special events and pretty much everything you do at the club. We will be using a
virtually free service called Survey Monkey that we will attach to all programs and services we
provide. It is a cost efficient way to get the real honest feedback we need to provide you with
the best possible service and programs. It is anonymous if you choose it to be so you can feel
free to keep the compliments coming !! We appreciate positive and negative feedback and it
really helps management and the Board of Directors set future direction. Thank you in advance
for answering any surveys that come your way.
Hollyburn is a great place to host holiday functions and we encourage you to get in touch with
our catering department to set yours up. Custom parties from 10 to 250 people are possible and
our catering department really does a great job in making sure that you are well looked after.
The ever popular “ Dickens Lunches” are back again this year so don’t miss out. We have singing
Carolers, an amazing holiday menu including delicious turkey and all the fixins. This really is a
nice time to be at the club and we look forward to seeing you here.
Once again, The Father Daughter Ball ( November 19th) is a complete sell out and will be the
biggest and best ever. The ball, with close to 500 attendees sold out in less than an hour. It is the
can’t miss function of the year and really sets the bar for all other club events. We can’t wait to
see you there.
Be sure to take a good look through this edition of the view. It is the program guide that
outlines all upcoming programming and activities. All departments work hard to bring exciting
initiatives your way and we continue to explore new ways of bringing you to the club. We are
very pleased with overall club activity as members seem to be using the club a great deal. We
want you here and we want you to receive very good value for your membership fees. If you see
a program or service idea that you feel would work at Hollyburn please email it to me directly at
[email protected].
We hope you had a healthy and safe Halloween.

There we all were. 525 plus, poor and deluded criminals who
were about to be sent on a one way trip to Alcatraz Island, less
than two miles off San Francisco.
Among the motley group were two Canadians, both
members of Hollyburn Country Club. They had been arrested
and sentenced to do time on Alcatraz for allegedly being
Canadians in possession of swim goggles!
Debbie ”Doc” Collins and myself, Shane Collins, along with the
rest of the “guilty” souls were herded on to the Hornblower
Ferry and left pier three dock for a short and lonely one way
ride to the infamous “Alcatraz Prison”.
Then the vessel arrived and the guards weren’t paying close
attention, the two of us, joined by the other “prisoners”
decided to make a run for it and we all jumped off the boat
and started swimming back to the Mainland.
Of the 500 plus swimmers that made the escape attempt,
more than 150 were dragged out of the frigid water [14.5
Celsius], suffering from exhaustion and hypothermia, but the
rest made it to shore.
We both had a terrific time being part in this historic race,
with Debbie taking first place in her non wetsuit division. In
fact, if you include the wetsuit swimmers [aka fish in chicken’s
clothing], she would still have placed second.
While these achievements are admirable in and of themselves,
Debbie has had a far more serious challenge to overcome.
Studying at The University of British Columbia, Debbie
competed on the varsity swim team. However, three years into
her studies [1982], she received a significant setback.
She was coughing and wheezing and finally went to her
physician. After several tests the diagnosis was lung cancer,
and she had immediate surgery. The operation was successful,
but half of one lung had to be removed. The doctor told
her that the long term prognosis for her general health was
reasonably positive, but that she would never be able to swim
again!
Debbie continued her studies, earning a medical degree and
eventually specializing in the practice of sport medicine.
Since that time, Debbie has competed in many arduous
swimming challenges, including a record breaking double
crossing of The Escape from Alcatraz [San Francisco
-Alcatraz- San Francisco]. She was also Captain of a Canadian
marathon swim team that completed a two way relay crossing
[England-France-England] of The English Channel [the third
fastest time in The Channel’s 130 year history]. She has
circumnavigated Bowen Island [current record holder], the
Island of Key West, completed three crossings of The Maui
Channel and still holds the women’s record for the crossing
of The Strait of Georgia [Vancouver Island to The Mainland].
Debbie has attempted the English Channel solo on 3 occasions
but was unsuccessful.
In 2007, we became the first Canadians to successfully swim
from Spain to Africa, crossing The Strait of Gibraltar.
I am very familiar with the courage and character that dwells
within this special person. Debbie Collins is not only my
dearest friend and training partner, she is also my wife. She
has learned throughout some of life’s hardships that we alone
are responsible for achieving our goals, in spite of the negative
and discouraging obstacles that cross our path.
We have adopted an excerpt from a poem written by The
Swahili Warriors of East Africa as our family motto and while
Debbie embodies it completely, I urge everyone to embrace
the message. It reads; “ Life has meaning only in the struggle.
Victory and defeat are in the hands of the Gods, so...let us
celebrate the struggle!”
The poem was written about 2000 years ago....some things
never change.
Shane Collins
Footnote: Shane Collins is a Marathon swimmer and was the
first athlete from BC to swim solo across The English Channel
[1995].

Method:
Yield: 8 Servings
Cut butternut squash lengthwise and remove seeds. Preheat oven to 375° F.
Brush insides and outsides of squash halves with vegetable oil, season with salt
and pepper and place cut sides down, on cookie sheet or in roasting pan. Bake
for 45-60 minutes or until squash is tender. Remove from oven to let cool until
they’re easy to handle.
Ingredients:
While squash is cooling, in a large saucepan, melt butter and add finely diced
onion. Cook until onion is softened. Remove from heat until squash is cooled
enough handle.
When squash is cooled, spoon out the softened squash into the saucepan with
the butter and onion, discarding the squash skin. Add enough chicken stock to
the saucepan to cover the squash by about an inch. Return to heat and bring to a
boil. Reduce heat and simmer for about 20 minutes. Add maple syrup, salt, black
pepper and a pinch of cinnamon.
1 large butternut squash
1 Tbsp. Vegetable oil
3/4 cup onion, very finely
diced
1 Tbsp. butter
3 cups chicken stock
1 cup 35% cream
Cinnamon, to taste
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. black pepper
1/4 cup maple syrup
If soup is lumpy at this point and you prefer it perfectly smooth, puree with an
immersion blender or a bit at a time in a regular blender. (Note: You can freeze
the soup at this point, prior to adding the cream or just refrigerate to serve later.
Simply re-warm then add cream before serving. Thin with a bit more chicken
stock, if needed).
Now, add as much or as little of the cream as you like to the soup. Cook over low
heat just until warmed through (do not boil). Serve and enjoy!
(A dollop of creme fraiche or sour cream and/or a sprinkling of parsley or chives
is nice with this soup)

definite social aspect to it as well. Mixed curling is not just for
married couples. It is for anyone who wants to curl in a mixed
setting, and a large percentage of our curlers are individual
curlers. In Mixed curling, couples are put on the same team,
and over the years lasting friendships are made. In short,
we have fun!! For more information call Pat Pearmain at
604.922.0423.
Thursday Evenings
Thursday Evening Mixed Curling
Our first Thursday Mixed curling on September 30 was an
informal mixer with each team playing several two end games.
The teams were divided into two groups – red and yellow –
and the red group was the big winner. This also gave our new
curlers a chance to try the game where the results wouldn’t
affect any standings in the league. Afterwards, we socialized
over food and beverage in the dining room. It was great to
reacquaint with friends and catch up on everyone’s summer.
Susanne Berry came away richer as the winner of the 50/50
draw.
For the fall session, there are nine teams, each week there
will be a team with a bye. They can be called on for spares if
required. Also, there will be a list posted on the notice board
with people who are available to spare.

DROP-INS
Most registered fitness programs allow drop-ins. The
instructor will add your name to the drop-in sheet and a drop
in fee will be charged to your account at the end of the month
for the number of classes attended. Drop in fees are 30 -40%
more than the cost per registered class. If the program is full,
drop-ins may be allowed for each class, at the instructors’
discretion, and never at the expense of a registered participant.
This is offered on a first come first served basis. A registered
participant has 10 minutes from the start time of the class to
claim their space. Drop-ins for all Pilates Programs are not
encouraged because of the progressive nature of the exercises.
MAKE UP CLASSES
If you miss a class, you may be allowed to make it up under the
following guidelines: within the same discipline (yoga for yoga
etc.), Fitness Centre Management approval, and within the
same session. If the make-up class you want to go to is full you
are treated as a regular drop-in, therefore the first come first
served rule applies.
EXTENDED CLASSES
MISSED CLASSES
If you are going to miss a set number of classes we would be
happy to prorate you if you notify us of the missed classes at
the time of registration.
WAITLIST
A waitlist will be created if a program is full. If a spot opens up,
those on the waitlist will have an opportunity to register for the
class. Those on a waitlist may still drop-in to the class. If the
waitlist supports another class the Fitness Centre management
will do its best to offer another program.

We are excited to announce Crossfit
is coming to Hollyburn in 2011!!
CrossFit is a core strength and conditioning program. Our
goal is to promote health, longevity and maintain physical
independence. This is accomplished by incorporating constantly
varied, multiple compound physical tasks that mimic motor
recruitment patterns performed in our everyday life. These
motor recruitment tasks are termed Functional Movements…
and are performed at high intensity.
The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability
making it the perfect application for any committed individual
regardless of experience and current fitness level. We’ve used
our same routines for elderly individuals with heart disease
and cage fighters. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change
programs.

GOLF
The Annual Hollyburn Men’s Golf Tournament was again held at
Fraserview on September 16th. Starting out as a dreary September day,
the boys had to only endure the rain for the first few holes, for the sun to
finally break out for them. Frustrations were raised when balls went into
the rough and drives curved when they weren’t supposed to. The men
kept their spirits up, along with a little help from Kevin and his Sleeman’s,
and they stuck it out for the rest of the afternoon.
In fine form, the foursome consisting of Robert Johnson, Greg Ledding,
Ray Leeden & Garth Brady took home the victory with the lowest team
gross score! This talented foursome was the last to tee-off. Maybe
the time spent out of the rain gave them an edge to victory, or could it
possibly have been the fantastic play of Mr. Greg Ledding. Greg not only
lead his team to the lowest team par score, but also managed to win both
the longest drive (LD) on hole #18, and lowest individual gross score for
the second year in a row! Much to the dismay of many of the other men
(Mike Clark)! Our own golf club member Craig ‘One Put’ McDowall took
home the low net score this year, and Steve Granger winning the closest
to the pin (KP) award, some may say by default. Maybe next year more of
you will remember to put your names down on the KP sheet! Also, a big
congratulations to Don Chan who was a great sport and won the highest
par score award, hope to see you out more often next year Don!
The club yet again had a very successful season over the summer, playing
at a variety of courses throughout the lower mainland. With great
courses, great attitudes and great games the enjoyment of the club
flourished. A game every Thursday throughout the season often lead to
a rewarding pitcher back at the Bar & Grill.
The Hollyburn Men’s Golf Club is a great way to
meet new members, better your golf game and
simply have fun! Each week we set up tee time
reservations for the group on a specified day,
all you have to do is show up! Season runs May
through September, with 1 getaway golf vacation
and the final Tournament and Banquet. If you are
an aspiring golfer, experienced, or new to the game,
this club is for you! For more information, or to be
included in the 2011 golf season, please contact Kari
& Kevin at [email protected].

MASTERS SWIMMING
Swimmer’s
Shoulder – What
happens and Why
• Soft tissue impingement: When soft tissues get pinched in
the subacromial space, they get inflamed, thus causing pain.
The supraspinatus tendon is particularly vulnerable. This
condition is commonly referred to as ‘swimmer’s shoulder
• The rotator cuff muscles provide the primary means of
stability for the shoulder joint.
• They are small muscles that are frequently overlooked in
exercise conditioning programmes, where the emphasis
tends to be focussed on the big power muscles, such as the
pectoralis, latissimus dorsi and trapezius muscles.

SWIM MASTERS
HEAD COACH

• Being inadequately conditioned the rotator cuff muscles are susceptible to overload, for example through excessive/
incorrect use of hand paddles.

• The risk of shoulder impingement is increased through poor
posture and particularly through swimming techniques that
produce internal rotation of the shoulder.
Masters and Shoulders
Some Masters will be swimming through the love of this great sport their entire lifetime.
Shoulders bear the brunt of all this swimming. As people age, their bodies and shoulders will
inflame more easily. A swimming stroke that produced speed and no pain at an earlier age
might cause trouble later. The stroke might need to be continually modified for the body to
accommodate aging and prevent injury. Consider swimming with a variety of stroke options
so the pressure on the shoulder is not focused continually at particular points. It may not be
possible to copy the “state of the art” stroke without causing inflammation trouble.
It is difficult to give general principles but consider these:
a. Enter hands gently and catch well into the stroke.
b. Recover over the water in a gentle manner. Use body roll to achieve high elbows.
c. Tuck chin comfortably rather than looking ahead tortoise style.
d. Use deep abdominal muscles to help harness the core and support the body rather than just the back muscles alone.
e. Rotate body with hips, shoulders and ankles roughly in the same plane.
f. Full power is only applied for a zone of the stroke and eased at the extremities.
g. Develop a smooth flowing stroke rather than stop start.

• Unlike the belly of the muscle, tendons have a poor blood
supply. This results in a reduced supply of nutrients to the
tissues for growth and repair. This leads to a decrement in
condition with advancing age, thus increasing risk of damage.
Rotator Cuff
Exercises
Internal Rotation
(closing the door)
1. Stand with arm hanging relaxed by side.
2. Keeping elbow by side, bend elbow to 90 degree angle with
hand in front (not to the side)
3. Keeping elbow by side, wrap forearm across body, forearm
parallel to the floor.
External Rotation
(opening the door)
1. Stand with arm hanging relaxed by side.
2. Keeping elbow by side, bend elbow to 90 degree angle with

These two exercises can be done squatting or
standing in the pool with the shoulders submerged.
Keep the wrist firm and the elbow tucked into the
side.
On land, they can be done against resistance, by
using a tethered exercise band or by pushing against
the opposite hand.
They can also be done, lying on the side, same
relative starting position, holding a light weight (a
can of soup for example). Internal rotation – use the
bottom arm; external rotation – use the upper arm.

I am always approached with the question ‘How much does
my child need to practice?’. As I stated in our Private Lessons
Policy, I am expecting that you practice every day but as a
mother I know how that can be unrealistic; practicing is a
self-discipline that we have to teach our children. When my
students reach Grade 4 at school I’m ready for the battle! They
complain about homework, they are tired, sometimes they tell
me that they are playing piano only because of their parents. At
that moment I’m not offended at all. I think how thankful I’m to
those parents. I’m thankful that my parents didn’t let me quit.
It is a bumpy road for everybody, but by age 10 they are playing

piano mostly because they really want to. By that time, they
already know to read notes in treble and bass clefs, they know
that ‘crescendo’ means gradually louder and they can reach the
pedal! Of course, practicing is still a challenge, but we can help.
I find that in our busy lives finding regular time for practicing
piano is very difficult. Our kids have many interests after school,
homework and of course they have to socialize and have some
time for themselves. That leaves a morning as a very good time;
practicing will definitely wake them up! Thinking about notes,
rhythm and dynamic signs will put their brains on a right course
for a day and a math test won’t be that hard after all! Many of
my students tried and it works!

Preventing Falls in
Seniors
by Mitchell Davis, Registered Physiotherapist
More than one third of Canadians age 65 and older fall each
year. It’s estimated that 50% of those who fall will suffer
moderate to severe injuries (sprains, fractures, head trauma)
that permanently reduce their mobility and independence.
Direct health care costs relating to falls are estimated at $1
billion every year. These falls account for 84% of injury related
admissions to hospitals, 40 percent of all admissions to nursing
homes, and a 10% increase in home-care services.
Research shows that modifying the home and reducing fall
hazards in the community can reduce the risk of falls by half.
Impaired vision , mental functioning, and medications are also
risk factors. Many seniors will stay home for fear of falling and
in doing so lose the physical benefits of normal activity which
further compromises their balance and muscle strength and
increases their risk for falls.
• After sitting up from bed or preparing to get up from a chair,
pause 10 seconds before rising to avoid dizziness
• Install handrails and grab-bars in the bathrooms and
stairways and ensure good lighting (and night-lites) around
the home
• Concentrate on what you’re doing while doing it and move
at a comfortable speed; don’t rush
• Keep flashlights near the bed and in the kitchen and sitting
area for when the power goes out
• Be careful with objects that are higher up – extending the
neck back can bring on dizziness and falls. Keep objects on
the lower shelves and use a ladder or step stool if you need
to getting up higher
• Ensure your medications aren’t causing any dizziness and
don’t mix them with alcohol
• Be mindful of pets getting underfoot or getting your feet
tangled in their leashes or the pet pulling on you with the
leash
• Remove reading glasses when walking
• Don’t leave clutter around the house
Specific exercises, activities and interventions prescribed by
a physiotherapist are helpful in dramatically reducing the risk
of falling in older adults. A targeted physiotherapy treatment
program can help maintain or regain strength, flexibility and
endurance in a way that still feels safe and secure.
• Try to be physically active daily to improve posture, muscle
strength and balance. A tai chi or balance class can be
helpful.

or Thomas Roundhill by calling 604-913-4563.

SENIORS
Very few groups within the Hollyburn Family can
boast a longevity of 43 years of association and
operation. Aquafit started in September 1967 when
pool manager Mike Allan thought some of the
moms at HCC would like (and could use) some
stroke correction. Thus began the original
“Swimnastics”. We meet 3 mornings per week
and have many outside activities as well. The
hiking group have done many trips to Vancouver
Island, Washington State, BC. Interior, Whistler
and also a holiday to Mexico. We have also formed
an investment education and participation group
called Aquaventures. We divided the profits several
years ago, but continue to meet for an annual
dinner.
The Senior’s Autumn Equinox Mingler
on September 18, 2010 was a huge success!
Seniors enjoyed live music, Equinox cocktails,
delicious hors d’oeuvres, scrumptious desserts
and of course: great company! People mixed
and mingled into the evening! I huge thanks to
the Senior’s Committee and Jeri Rae for their
hard work and organization! The next Mingler
will be in April 2011.

Thursty Squash
League
Thursty squash has been
around in one form or
another for some 25
years. The main principles
of Thursty Squash
are competitive play,
commitment to play on
Thursday nights and the
post match social aspect.
The league is open to men
and women of all ages and
abilities and is designed
to promote friendly and
competitive play between
members. Space is limited.
Each Thursday night between
5:30 and 9:00pm participants
have a match pre-scheduled
against a player of similar
ability. Players of similar ability
are grouped together and
over 5-6 weeks will play one
another. Depending on results
players will be rearranged into
new groups for the next cycle.

WHAT LEVEL DOES MY CHILD NEED TO HAVE TO BE ON
THE SWIM TEAM?
WHAT ARE THE MAIN BENEFITS OF JOINING A SWIM
TEAM?
Young swimmers (10 yrs and younger) need to be able to swim
one length of the pool on their front or on their back, and be
comfortable in the deep water. This usually corresponds to
completion of Red Cross level 4. If you are interested in the
team but unsure of your child’s ability level please contact Head
Coach Jeff Grace at [email protected] to set up an
evaluation to see if your child is ready for the team. There are many great benefits to belonging to the swim
team, it provides the opportunity for children to pursue both
team and individual goals, how to swim all four strokes more
efficiently, to develop a high level of fitness, meet new friends
and most importantly have fun.
CAN MY CHILD TRY THE TEAM TO SEE IF THEY LIKE IT?
Yes we have an ongoing one-week trial period.
HOW DO I KNOW WHEN MY CHILD IS READY TO JOIN THE
TEAM?
Simple, if your child loves to swim and would like to become
part of a great team! The best way to find out if your child is
ready to be on the team is for both the child and parents is to
set up a time to come to the pool and speak to the coaches and
see the practices.
To do this please contact Head Coach Jeff Grace at
[email protected]
HOW IS THE SWIM TEAM DIFFERENT THAN SWIMMING
LESSONS?
Both swimming lessons and the swim team are great ways
for your child to learn how to swim. On the swim team we
concentrate on teaching technique in all four strokes and
developing the fitness levels of each swimmer.
As part of the swim team athletes will also be exposed to
dryland training (strength, flexibility and co-ordination)
and many other skills such as goal setting and approaching
challenges with a positive attitude that are transferable to all
areas of their life. HOW MANY HOURS A WEEK DO I HAVE TO TRAIN?
This is very dependent on what group your child is in. In our
Olympic Way programs, which are the introductory groups
athletes can start with one practice, which is one hour a week.

WHAT TYPE OF SUIT DOES MY CHILD NEED?
For our two entry level groups the following applies:
Olympic Way female athletes must where a team practice suit
and a cap if they have longer hair; male athletes must where a
team practice suit.
Girls should have a one piece training suit and boys are
encouraged to where a jammer, a tighter suit that extends just
above the knees, but the jammer is not required in the Stroke

THE COMMUNITY
“I believe that Millennium Water is an
example of what good planning can achieve.”
“Each day in the Village brings new surprises and discoveries—pieces of
art suddenly appear; families picnic in the plaza; children play in the
parks; new neighbours stop to chat. Being a part of this brand new
community is exhilarating and interesting on a continual basis.
I believe it’s a place that will grow to mature with the Salt Building and
Creekside Community Centre acting as anchors. When London Drugs
and Urban Fare complete, we will see a blossoming much like Yaletown
in its infancy. I bought here to live and God willing, I’ll be here fifteen
years from now and expect to pass this home on to my son.”
