Playing the object of Justin Bieber's affection in his "Baby" video has had its ups-and-downs for singer Jasmine Villegas (a.k.a. Jasmine V.) "I got a lot of good responses and I actually gained some fans," says the 16-year-old. "But a lot of girls are like, 'Stay away from my man!' and 'He's mine!' " The truth is, there's plenty to love about the bubbly San Jose, Calif., native: 1. She is not dating Bieber "Those are all rumors," she says. "We're not dating. We're just really cool friends." Jasmine, who 3313 ½ N. Sepulveda Blvd. Manhattan Beach, CA 90266 / 310.546.5069-office/310.546.1297-fax attended Bieber's recent 16th birthday bash, adds, "When I've hung out with him, it's always been with a bunch of people." The pair did share a scripted kiss during the video shoot – which didn't make the final cut – but Jasmine insists there was nothing romantic to it: "It was like work." Still, she does have a fondness for the "sweet" pop star. "He's super-talented, very nice and very down-to-earth." 2. She was discovered while walking down the street "I have a musical family, so I used to always sing around with them for events," she explains. "I never thought I could make a career out of it." That changed a few years ago, when she was visiting Los Angeles. "I was walking down the street singing, and some guy started talking to my mom," says Jasmine, who was belting out "How to Deal" by Frankie J. "I sang more songs for him, and he ended up sending out a video to a couple people, and that's how I got my manager." Soon, she was performing the national anthem for teams including the Los Angeles Clippers, the Angels, the Dodgers, and the Lakers. 3. Music isn't even her first career Before she became a singer, Jasmine was a model and actress. She's appeared on The Nine, That's So Raven, and My Wife and Kids, and also scored a part in Kanye West's Jesus Walks video when she was 11 years old. "It was my first music video I was ever in," she says. "I played an angel." 4. She's an international star Because of her heritage – she's half-Filipino, half-Mexican – Jasmine ended up catching the eye of Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao's camp, and landed gigs singing at his matches. "Manny and his people ended up flying me out to the Philippines and I became a big celebrity over there," she says. Thanks to her personal Web site and YouTube videos, she now has fans all over the world, and she often interacts with them via Twitter and Skype. Jasmine's international fans are such a dedicated bunch that they won't let time zone issues get in their way of chatting with her. "One girl was like, 'Okay, it's so nice talking to you. I've got to go to bed. I've got to wake up in two hours. I've got school.'" 5. Her first album is due out later this year Jasmine's song "Serious" helped her get a deal with Epic Records, and she's currently recording songs for her first album, which she expects to cross a pop sound with urban attitude. She hopes to walk in the footsteps of her idol: Alicia Keys. "I think she's amazing," says Jasmine. "She's one of the artists that doesn't have to show off her body too much to get attention and is all about her voice, and her beauty, and her talent." STARRY CONSTELLATION March 12, 2010 JASMINE V. SERIOUS by: Jamie Steinberg website: http://www.myspace.com/jasminev Featured Music Q) How would you describe your sound? A) My sound is like pop with a little bit of urban twist. Q) Who are some of your musical influences? A) My idol has to be Alicia Keys. When I was little, my dad showed me all of her music and my favorite song of hers is "If I Ain't Got You." So, when I used to do shows, that is one of the songs that I would sing. I loved how she was so beautiful, she was so conservative and had an amazing voice. She plays the piano, writes her own music and and plays the guitar. I thought she was very multitalented. Q) You are featured in Justin Bieber's video for his song "Baby." How did that come about? A) I didn't really have to audition for it. His manager and my manager knew each other so they asked me to do it. I'm glad they did because it was a lot of fun. Q) Your single "Serious" is out right now. How was that chosen as your first release? A) Eight months ago we recorded it and then we went to New York and shot a music video for it. It's a video I did before I got signed to a record label. We did it on our own and partnered up with a charity. We had kids from the charity help out with the production, be in the video, do makeup and help with the video. It was the video we showed the record label and that's how I got signed. Q) Four different labels were interested in signing you. How did that make you feel? A) It was so much fun! It was exciting and it felt really good to know that all these record labels wanted me. At the time, you can't believe it. Then, when I went to New York, we met with all the record labels at their offices. It was so hard because everyone was so nice, but we made the right decision. Q) What inspires your lyrics? A) I like to put stuff that happens in my life and teenagers, whether it is about love, backstabbing, etc. I just wanted to relate to older and younger people. I wanted songs that relate to everybody. Q) Where can people go online to learn more about you? A) They can go to http://www.myspace.com /jasminev and they can also go to my Twitter, which is @JasmineVillegas. They can also go to YouTube and find videos of me there. Next2Shine.com July 22, 2009 At 15 years old Jasmine Villegas (@jasminevillegas) doesn’t look like a diva. But that changes as soon as the girl who stands 4 feet, 11 inches tall and weighs 90 pounds – grabs a microphone and unleashes a voice that could rival the greats. The San Jose native has been wowing crowds across the country as she prepares for a promising career that’s ahead of her. Jasmine has been seen and heard singing the National Anthem for Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Miami Heat, Sacramento Kings, Anaheim Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Kings, Golden State Warriors, Winky Wright vs Jermain Taylor boxing fight, Paul Williams vs Antonio Margarito boxing fight, the PGA Tour. We caught up with Jasmine today and asked her a few of our own questions. In this article, we included a video that shows Jasmine answering her fans questions. Also be sure to check out her newest music video “I Own This“! After doing so many cover’s of songs, can fans expect an album from you in the future ? If so who will you be working with on the project ? Yeah, hopefully I will have an album out at the end of this year/beginning of next year. We don’t have a specific producer yet but we are looking at Brian Kennedy, and Midi Mafia, and others. As far as writers, I don’t have any specific writers. The producers have writers that they work with, so I’ll be working with their in-house writers. When did you began doing covers of other artist’s songs and how do you pick which songs to do cover’s of? At first I based the songs that I liked personally. Then we started focusing on the fans. The fans started submitting their requests as we tried to fulfill the requests. What was your experience like working with Kanye West on his ‘Jesus Walks’ video ? When I the music video I was young. I actually never got to meet him, because he shot the video on a different day. Just, to be on the music video was really exciting. Who would you said influenced you to become a music artist? It would have to be Alicia Keys. She’s not in the same music genre that I am in.. but the fact that shes very beautiful, and multi-talented. She can sing, play the guitar, write songs, & play the piano. I love everything about her. Performing at such a young age, with so many different responsibilities, do you sometimes wish you could live a normal childhood, and just hangout at the mall with your friends and be a little care free? Yeah! I sometimes do wish that because it gets stressful. Being in the music industry I get to do things that others might not be able to do. I feel like it’s a fair trade. What’s one of your most memorable performances? I would have to say it was the first Manny Pacquiao fight. It was one of the most largest crowds I’ve ever performed for. He is also one of my favorite boxers, so it was very memorable for me. When did you first realize that you wanted to be a singer? I actually started out with acting first. But, ever since I was little I always used to sing for fun. One day I got discovered from a guy who heard me singing. At eleven years old, He showed me that I could sing as a career and introduced me to individuals within the industry. Being a artist, you must face different opinions, both good and bad. What are some of the things that help you motivate yourself to do better when someone criticizes you? You’re always going to have haters because they always have something to say about you. But at the same time, they took out time to watch you sing. I try to take it as constructive criticism. If I knew the performance was not great, I know it’s my job to go in and fix that. You’re still young, so where do you see yourself progressing in the next 5 years? Hopefully in the next 5 years, I’ll still be singing. I want to be able to hit all the crowds with my music. Since you do so many performances throughout the year, where can your fans expect to see your perform next? I actually have a performance tomorrow at Knotts Berry Farm. I encourage my fans to check it out and come to the event if you are nearby! http://blog.thenext2shine.com/2009/interview-jasmine-villegas-singer BopandTigerBeat.Com April, 1 2010 Who Has a Special Appearance in Justin Bieber & Sean Kingston’s “EENIE MEENIE” Music Vid? http://www.bopandtigerbeat.com/justin-bieber/who-has-aspecial-appearance-in-justin-bieber-sean-kingstons-eenie-meenie-music-vid/ - reply Posted on Mar 30, 2010 3:30 pm 5 Yesterday, when we hung out all day on the set of Sean Kingston and Justin Bieber’s music video, we found out who was going to make a special appearance in “Eenie Meenie!” Would you be surprised to know that it was none other than Justin’s “Baby” video girl Jasmine V.?
