Letters To Santa
Yes, Virginia, there is a
Santa Claus — and the Postal
Service can help you prove it
when Santa replies to your
child’s letter, complete with a
North Pole postmark.
Steps for your child to get a
letter back from Santa:
1. Have your child write a
letter to Santa and place it in
an envelope addressed to:
Santa Claus, North Pole.
2. Later, when alone, open
the envelope and write a personalized response.
3. Insert the response letter
into an envelope and address it
to the child.
4. Add the return address:
SANTA, NORTH POLE, to
the envelope.
5. Ensure the envelope is
affixed with a First-Class Mail
stamp, such as a recently
issued Charlie Brown Christmas stamp.
6. Place the complete envelope into a larger envelope —
preferably a Priority Mail Flat
Rate Envelope — with appropriate postage, and address it
to North Pole Postmark, Postmaster, 4141 Postmark Drive,
Anchorage, AK 99530-9998
“Letters from Santa” must
be received by the Anchorage,

"December 7th, 1941 -- a date which will live in infamy -- the
United States of America was suddenly and deliberately
attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.” With
these words, Pres. Franklin Roosevelt asked a joint session of
the US House of Representatives and Senate to declare that a
state of war existed between Japan and the United States. Americans would officially join the largest human conflict in history.
The Otter Tail County Historical Society will commemorate
this event Monday, December 7 at 2 p.m. at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Fergus Falls. This special edition of the monthly
Military Roundtable will feature Myron Broschat of Fergus
Falls, retired Otter Tail Power Company manager, historian and
veteran. His dramatic retelling of the events leading up to Pearl
Harbor is a fitting tribute as we mark the 74th anniversary of US
involvement in World War II.
There is no cost for the program but donations to the Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign will be gladly accepted. For

Grants
Graveside Services In November of 2011, my
husband and I moved into our
cabin on Clitherall Lake.
From the very first day, we
have been welcomed into the
entire communities of Clitherall and Battle Lake. During
the past four years, we have
come to enjoy the celebrations
and excitement in this land of
very clear water! The people
we have met have been so
friendly and open to us and
our family! But what happened Saturday, November
14th was something very
memorable.
The two of us were enjoying an evening out at Stella's.
When it came time to pay the
bill, our waitress shared with
us that the three students that
had been dining at a table near
the windows had paid for our
meal! We were overwhelmed
and surprised that the three of
them would have even noticed
us let alone pay for our meal!
We want the three of you to
know that this act of generosity was so unexpected! As my
husband and I inquired about
your identities, we did find out
that you are two seniors and a
junior at Battle Lake High
School. Once again, the Battle
Lake community through
these young people showed an
extra amount of kindness to
us. How great it is to know
that the students, families and
community are caring and
welcoming to those of us who
enjoy our time at the cabin!
May your Thanksgiving joy
be extended a little bit longer
because you reached out to
two people who truly felt your
generosity! Thank you and we
hope you had a great Thanksgiving!

Rep. Bud Nornes, R-Fergus
Falls, announced Otter Tail
Telcom will receive a pair of
grants totaling more than
$450,000 to assist in improving Internet access for underserved portions of the region.
The grants are two of 15 –
totaling $11 million –
announced by the Minnesota
Department of Employment
and Economic Development.
Otter Tail Telcom's grants
include more than $295,000 to
extend its existing fiber cable
at the northern fringe of Fergus Falls to serve 56 households, seven businesses and
one cell tower. DEED indicates the total cost is
$621,962, with Otter Tail Telcom providing a 52 percent
local match. The project will
improve broadband service for
numerous businesses and residents, while also bringing a
new industrial park to shovelready status.
The other grant is more
than $164,000 to help build
out middle-mile broadband
infrastructure north of Fergus
Falls, where interstate highways 59 and 94 intersect. The
project will provide highspeed Internet service to a
number of households and
nearby community institutions. Areas north and south of
Elizabeth are included. The
project is estimated to cost
nearly $346,000 in total, with
Otter Tail Telcom providing a
53-percent match.
A news release from DEED
indicates "all customers
served by Park Region Telephone Co., Otter Tail Telcom
and other neighboring telecoms will benefit from the
added connectivity. Remote
clinics and hospitals associated with Sanford Health will
have a seamless data flow of
records, x-rays, scans and
other medical information.
Schools and libraries in the
region also will benefit."
"Congratulations to those
involved in successfully earning these grants," said Rep.
Bud Nornes, R-Fergus Falls.
"These projects will have a
variety of benefits for families
and businesses in our area,
and also create further opportunities for development.
Improvements like these are
what we envisioned when the
Legislature provided funding
for these grants. It is good to
see some of that money land
locally."

Second Sunday of Advent
Rising to the Occasion
A
modicum of stress in our lives is to be expected, and may even be a
good thing. Rising to the occasion to meet a challenge at work or
school almost always makes us mentally and emotionally stronger, just
as exercise stresses the body and makes us physically stronger. But sometimes we are overtaxed by problems which are seemingly beyond our abilities and then stress can wear us down. Sometimes the problem is too big to
handle by ourselves, and we need to ask for help. At other times problems
keep coming one after the other, until we just can’t cope any longer. Often
it’s the little annoyances at the end of a long day that trigger the meltdown,
not the big problems that came early on. We are usually better able to meet
challenges early in the day, before fatigue sets in, and thus it may be wise to
plan your day and its potential problems accordingly. It helps to know that
in the grand scheme of things, most of our day-to-day problems won’t be
remembered a year from now, and certainly not in a hundred years. It also
helps to know that God “has our back” and should be called on
to help with all of our problems, both large and small.

Proverbs 3:5
Key To Happiness
by Pastor Paul Twist
Lakes Community Church
PO Box 92 • Clitherall, MN 56524
www.lakescommunitychurch.org
An old gospel hymn popped into my head as I began writing
this devotional, perhaps because of all the discouraging news in
the media these days.
The killing and fighting, persecution against Jews and Christians—all create an atmosphere of fear even though the violence
is not in our backyard. Viewing the world as a whole is distressing, but the song
“God is Still on the Throne” came to mind. I remember hearing
it as the theme song for a Christian radio program, and as I
looked for it in an old hymnal, I was encouraged to find the
words again.
It has four verses, with this chorus:
“God is still on the throne, and He will remember His own:
Though trials may press us and burdens distress us,
He never will leave us alone;
God is still on the throne, He never forsaketh His own:
His promise is true, He will not forget you.
God is still on the throne.”
When Kittie Louise Suffield wrote those words in 1929,
world conditions may not have been as alarming as they are
today, but it wasn’t long before the Great Depression when men
who lost all in the stock market were jumping out of tall buildings to their deaths.
The assurance that God is still on the throne, that He has final
control, is made clear in His holy word. There are many places
in the Bible where it seems God can’t or won’t step in and put
down the violence, such as this one in Psalm 11:4-7:
“The LORD is in his holy temple; the LORD is on his heavenly throne. He observes the sons of men; his eyes examine
them. The LORD examines the righteous, but the wicked and
those who love violence his soul hates. On the wicked and those
who love violence his soul hates, On the wicked he will rain
fiery coals and burning sulfur; a scorching wind will be their lot.
For the LORD is righteous, he loves justice; upright men will see
his face.”
You may ask why God doesn’t judge the world right now. The
answer is that God’s timing is different than ours. He also says,
“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise . . . He is patient .
. . not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).
The news doesn’t always report how faithful, fearless believers in Christ are sharing the good news of the gospel even as they
lose their lives for doing so. Surprisingly, many violent Christhaters have received salvation and new life in Christ.
Yes, God is still on the throne, and on time. May believers in
Christ faithfully pray and trust His timing.

American Heart Assn. Offers
Resource for Navigating the
Recovery Journey
Caregiving can be a 24-7 commitment — and it’s one of the
toughest jobs around. Each November, the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association recognizes National Family Caregivers Month to acknowledge the millions of family caregivers who are caring for their loved ones with a chronic disease.
National Family Caregivers Month also recognizes that caregivers have to take care of themselves to take care of their loved
ones, despite the many roles they play. Avoiding burnout and
staying refreshed may not be top of mind, but they’re some of the
things that matter most. “At the American Heart Association we know that recovering
from a stroke or cardiac event can impact survivors, caregivers,
family and friends. That’s why we developed the Support Network, a virtual community dedicated to serving heart disease and
stroke survivors and their caregivers,” said Barb Ducharme,
American Heart Association Executive Director.
Caring for a loved one can be rewarding. But it’s also among
life’s most challenging roles. It can be stressful and uncertain
when you’re suddenly thrust into the role of caregiver. To succeed, you must also take care of your needs.
Through the free support network, our goal is to improve the
knowledge, healthy behaviors and quality of life for heart and
stroke survivors, caregivers and family. The Support Network
gives the American Heart Association/American Stroke Associa-

Tales From Lakeside
by Skip Lee
Here we are, the middle of
November and we have just had
a taste of winter with a cold, wild
wind and a touch of snow to give
us a hint of what is to come. We
have had it pretty good with an
October that was the warmest in
history and a long, beautiful fall
that gave us all the time to finish
the fall work without getting
caught with a surprise storm like
we have had in the past. The
crops are in the bin, the leaves
are all taken care of and now we
can relax!!!
The beautiful fall weather has
been good to the high school
football season. The OTTERTAIL
BULLDOGS had a phenomenal
season going to the semi-finals
before falling to the eventual state
champion. The team can be
proud of all the hard work and
dedication that it took to get that
far, and if not for some injuries to
critical players, the outcome may
have been different. Our own
grandson had a successful season with the MAPLE GROVE
CRIMSON, again getting to the
semifinals and finishing oh so
close to getting the big prize. It
was fun to watch via streaming on
the computer as each game was
exciting to say the least. Oh what
memories that called for even
though my own experience went
back (could you believe) some 60
years. All the teams in Minnesota
enjoyed a remarkable year concluding with the final games in
“Bank” stadium that is the dream
of any kid who enjoys sports.
Uncle Jim and Dawn are again
on a Thanksgiving journey out
west to visit grandchildren to celebrate this annual festival that
marks the beginning of the
“feasts” that mark the changing of
the seasons. It gives me the
opportunity do some expression
of my own ideas.
It is a bit much though, to see
the Christmas decorations on display before the right time comes.
It is interesting to note that everyone recognizes the emphasis on
the commercial side but not much
is done to get back to the real
meaning of what the Holidays are
about. Somehow we must keep
the Greatest Gift that our Lord
has provided for us before us in
the Birth of the gift of Salvation
that is available to all. With all the
turmoil that is taking place in the
whole world because of some
fanatics, we must remember with
patience, that we need something
to guide us through turbulent
times. Hopefully the good Lord
will see to the resolution of the
problems that the whole world
faces. It is hard to understand
how some think violence is the
answer to achieving the goals
they are striving for.
The political situation in our
beloved country is also something to ponder with all the blathering and arguing and pointing of
fingers to try to establish blame
for things that have happened in
the recent past. What a plethora
of candidates on both sides of the
situation. Sometimes it is hard to
make a choice when no one has
come forth with ideas that should
show common sense. My old
friend said correctly the “common
sense isn’t common anymore”.
Let us pray that somehow reason
prevails and we get some choices
that are good for our country and
the times we live in.
Again we get to the time of
year when shopping gets to be
emphasized with “Black Friday”
and “Cyber Monday” are hyped to
the max. It may be important to
some part of the population but it
doesn’t get my motor to run any
better. The important thing is that
we don’t forget the real meaning
of the season. Let us not forget
what Advent on November 29th
stands for and follow our own
conscience to get our thoughts in
order.
I came across a test for “older
kids” to see if we recognize some
familiar things from the past. The
first question was, “After the Lone
Ranger saved the day and rode
off into the sunset, the grateful citizens would ask, “Who was that
masked man?” In variably someone would answer, ”I don’t know,
but he left this behind!” What did
he leave behind? You guessed
right----- it was ”a silver bullet!” I
think our Lord gives us a “silver
bullet” in faith to conquer and
understand the difficulties of our
times!!!!!

tion the bandwidth to touch so many more people who need
emotional support.
Support Network members can:
· Start or join a conversation. Get and give support from people who understand.
· Join a group — or start your own! Groups are a great way to
find others with common conditions and experiences.
· Know that our online community is dedicated to serving you.
It’s for you or someone you care about that’s dealing with a heart
or stroke issue.
· Meet others like you. Share your story. Find and give support.
In addition to the Support Network here are some tips for
caregivers to stay refreshed:
• Take a 10 or 15-minute walk a couple of times a day, even if
it’s just around the yard.
• Choose a quiet space in the house where you can go take a
few deep breaths, read a book, pray, meditate, listen to music,
sing, write in your journal, chat with a friend on the phone or just
rest quietly for a few minutes.
• Schedule timeouts. Choose a time when your loved one is
typically sleeping, eating, watching a TV program or seems to be
at their best during the day. They will get accustomed to your little timeouts after a while and stop resenting your privacy and
interrupting you.
• Insist on these moments in a gentle way and reward your
loved one when you’ve refreshed yourself.
•Download Caregiver Resources guide.

County Lends Financial Help
For Senior Housing Projects
Dec. 2nd Puzzle
By Tom Hintgen, Otter Tail County Correspondent
The County Board of Commissioners, in order to help facilitate senior housing projects in cooperation with government and
private industry, has agreed to be the conduit for financing of
new revenue bonds.
Conduit bonds are issued by governmental units such as
Otter Tail County on behalf of private entities. They are normally projects by non-profit entities, an example being public housing.
On November 10 a conduit bond public hearing was held
jointly by Otter Tail County and the Housing and Redevelopment Authority (HRA).
Later, the county board approved an agreement that will not
exceed $7 million of $17.5 million needed for rehabilitation of
senior housing for River Bend Apartments in Fergus Falls and
Kaleva Apartments in New York Mills.
Addressing the county board about conduit bond details were
Nick Leonard, Otter Tail County’s new director of economic
development and tourism, and Financial Advisor Nick Anhut of
Ehlers and Associates.
County commissioners, when approving these types of financial arrangements, want to ensure that county taxpayers are protected if something goes awry.
“Conduit financing is typically
backed by either the conduit

borrower’s credit, or funds pledged toward the project by outSchool
side investors,” said Leonard. “If
a project fails and the security goes into default, it falls to the
conduit borrower’s financial

senior citizens and people with disabilities in finding affordable housing the past 40
years. They work closely with representatives of the federal

Dec. 2nd Puzzle
Here’s How It Works:
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3
boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row,
column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column
and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by
using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers
you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

With Fire Deaths On The Rise, Fire
Marshal Asks For Public’s Help
Social Media Campaign Will Focus on Ways
Minnesotans Prevent Fires
The number of fire fatalities in 2015 has already surpassed last
year’s number — a concerning statistic with some of the historically most deadly months ahead for residential fires.
Minnesota State Fire Marshal Bruce West is asking Minnesotans
to help make this a holiday season without heartache. His goal? No
more residential fires or fire fatalities this year. “We need people to be part of the solution by taking fire prevention seriously,” West said. “We do not want anyone else to suffer the
heartache that comes along with a house fire.”
Forty-six people have died in fires so far this year in Minnesota
compared 44 in all of 2014. There were 41 fire deaths at this time
last year.
Why can the holiday season and winter months dangerous for
fires? The three leading causes of Minnesota fires last year — cooking, heating and open flame — are holiday staples. West offers the
following tips to keep your home and family safe this holiday season:
Cooking
• Never leave a hot stovetop or oven unattended.
• Smother a stovetop grease fire with a pan lid and turn off the
burner.
Heating
• Keep space heaters three feet from anything combustible.
• Do not leave space heaters unattended and turn them off while
you’re sleeping.
Open flames
• Leave three feet between a candle and anything that can burn;
use flameless candles.
• Holiday decorations are combustible. Keep them three feet from
any fuel source.
• Never burn gift wrap in a fireplace; it burns too fast and hot to
be controlled.
Be Part of the Solution
The SFMD is asking people to share what steps they’re taking to
prevent fires in their homes using the hashtag #FireFree on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
Do you test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms every
month? Snap a photo and show us on social media. Do you have a
quick and easy way to remember to practice your safe escape plan?
Share it. Your tip or photo could help save someone’s life.
Since 1990, there has been an average 81 residential fires over the
Thanksgiving holiday weekend and 187 residential fires between
Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day. Last year, 20 of Minnesota’s 44 fire deaths occurred cold-weather months.
DNR Announces Northwestern MN
Furbearer Registration Stations
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reminds
northwestern Minnesota fur trappers to register their pelts in
December and January at one of several furbearer registration
stations.
At the following local locations, furbearers (all species) may
be registered between noon and 7 p.m. on December 4. Bobcat
and otter only registration will be held between 3 p.m. and 6
p.m. on January 5.
* Backus DNR forestry office, 4391 State Highway 87, 218732-8452.
* NEW: Detroit Lakes area wildlife office, 14583 County
Highway 19, 218-846-8374.

* Wadena County Highway Department, 221 Harry Rich Dr.,
Wadena, 218-732-8452.
Registration is also available by appointment throughout the
furbearer season at any of the following DNR area wildlife
offices. Trappers and hunters must call ahead to make an
appointment.
* Park Rapids area wildlife office, 603 First St. W., 218-7328452.
* Crookston area wildlife office, 204 Main St. S., 218-2816063.

* Glenwood area wildlife office, 23070 N. Lakeshore Drive,
320-634-7337.
Pelts must be removed from the carcass and thawed for
inspection purposes. The entire carcass of bobcats, and the
heads of each pine marten and fisher, must be presented at the
time of registration. Trappers must present completed site validation coupons for each fisher, pine marten and river otter when
presenting these pelts for registration. The site validation tags
must be notched to indicate the date and time of harvest. Trappers can obtain four otter tags and two fisher/marten tags, which
are available upon request from license vendors. Trappers may
have two combined (one fisher and one marten) or two fisher or
two marten.
To expedite registration, trappers must produce their license
(trappers should also bring their small game license) and should
bring the following written information for each animal to be
registered: species; sex; date and location taken (county, township and range); method of take, including type of trap used;
and the DNR number as shown on the license.
Fur registration forms and additional information are available from the area wildlife offices or the DNR website at
www.mndnr.gov.

Sustainable Agriculture Grants
Due in December
Funding helps farmers test new ideas
The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) reminds
Minnesota farmers and others of the upcoming application
deadline for the Sustainable Agriculture Demonstration Grant
Program on December, 15, 2015.
This grant program provides funding to test ideas with the
potential to conserve natural resources and energy, enhance
profitability, and improve life on the farm. All funded projects
are summarized in the MDA’s annual Greenbook publication:
www.mda.state.mn.us/greenbook, which is an excellent
resource for potential applicants.
Farmers receive priority, but the program also funds Minnesota nonprofit and educational organizations, as long as Minnesota farmers are meaningfully involved in the project. The
program is intended to help people try new things: while applicants should be optimistic about their idea, they don’t have to
guarantee success.
Projects can last up to three years, and applicants may receive
up to $25,000, although many applicants request less. The deadline to apply is December 15, 2015. Funds will be available in
the spring of 2016.

DNR Approves Groundwater Area Plan For
North and East Metro
The Minnesota Department of Natural
Resources this week approved a plan designed
to ensure adequate supplies of groundwater
within the state’s first designated groundwater
management area. The designated area
includes all of Washington and Ramsey counties, along with portions of Anoka and Hennepin counties.
The North and East Metro Groundwater
Management Area Plan lays out five broad
objectives and describes specific actions the
DNR will take to ensure adequate groundwater
supplies to meet human needs while protecting
lakes, streams and wetlands. The plan was
developed over two years by DNR staff and an
advisory team of nearly two dozen representatives of local government, industry and other
agencies.
“Here in the land of 10,000 lakes and hundreds of streams and rivers, it’s easy to take
water for granted,” said DNR Commissioner
Tom Landwehr. “But in some parts of Minnesota, such as the north and east metro area,
growing demands on groundwater could place
our aquifers and other resources at risk if we’re
not careful. This plan explains how the DNR
will work to make sure our use of groundwater
remains sustainable.”
A statewide analysis of groundwater
resources identified the north and east metro
region as an area of concern because it has
many surface waters connected to and affected
by groundwater levels, and the area’s population and water use are increasing.
The plan provides a framework within
which the DNR will work with major water
users, including municipalities. This cooperative effort will promote conservation, protect
surface waters and water quality, improve the
groundwater
appropriations
permitting
process, and resolve any conflicts that might
arise among users. The plan addresses a broad
set of challenges in this large geography, and
also addresses issues related to several specific
features such as White Bear Lake, the wet
prairie complexes of Anoka County and certain
trout streams.
Over the plan’s first five years, the agency
will meet periodically with users and other
stakeholders to provide updates and hear concerns. At the end of that time, the DNR will
review the plan and its results to determine
future actions.
The North and East Metro Groundwater
Management Area is one of three groundwater
management areas being established around
the state. The other two are in central Minnesota’s Bonanza Valley just west of St. Cloud, and
around the Straight River near Park Rapids in
north-central Minnesota.
More information, including plans and maps
for the North and East Metro Groundwater
Management Area, can be found at
www.dnr.state.mn.us/gwmp/area-ne.html.
County Board Ready To Back Delays in
Stocking More Muskies
By Tom Hintgen
Otter Tail County Correspondent
The Otter Tail County
Board of Commissioners,
hearing from many of their
constituents opposed to stocking of more muskies in area
lakes, is close to adopting a
resolution in support of those
constituents.
County board members, on
November 24, stopped short
of passing a resolution until
correct wording for a resolution can be drafted.
However, in the near future,
it appears that the board will
likely pass a resolution urging
the DNR to delay stocking of
more muskies.
“We as a county board will
likely ask the DNR to provide
further research,” said Commissioner Doug Huebsch of
Perham. “We need assurances
that stocking of more muskies
will not have adverse effects
in area lakes.”
The county board heard
from Lake Lizzie lake association representative Mike
Johnson and Dave Majkrzak,
past president of the Pelican
Lake Association and current
president of the Otter Tail
Coalition of Lake Associations (COLA).
Both oppose more muskie
stocking in area lakes.
Muskies were introduced in
the 1960s and 1970s to Pelican Lake, West Battle Lake
and Beers Lake at Maplewood
State Park.
Now, a plan by the DNR
calls for stocking of more
muskies in one of three county lakes next year. On the list
are Franklin Lake and Lake
Lizzie northeast of Pelican
Rapids and Loon Lake near
Vergas.
State statute gives Minnesota DNR Commissioner
Tom Landwehr and the state
DNR office the authority to
make final decisions on stocking of muskies in designated
lakes.
Area fishing guides and
muskie fishing association
members say that muskies
coexist with other game fish
in Minnesota without detrimental effects.
However, the concern of
many local property owners at
area lakes is that muskies will
devour many game fish such
as walleye, bass and crappies.
The guides and association
members expressed their
views during an open meeting
October 29 in Fergus Falls,
attended by DNR Commissioner Landwehr, area state
legislators and other officials.
Opponents also attended the
gathering.
“Those in favor (of more
muskies stocking) were mostly comprised of people who
don’t live here in Otter Tail
County,” said Huebsch.
“When a final decision is
reached, half of you will be
happy and the other half not
happy,” said Landwehr who
traveled from St. Paul to Fer-
gus Falls for the October 29
open meeting, at the request of
area legislators.
“Too much weight in favor
of muskies stocking came
from muskie association
members such as those from
Fargo-Moorhead,” said Johnson. “We at Lake Lizzie are
among several lake associations that have expressed
opposition to the DNR plan
for stocking of more
muskies.”
Majkrzak said he and fellow residents of Pelican Lake
have concrete concerns for the
DNR plan.
“Keep in mind that new
state legislation protects all
muskies up to 54 inches in
length,” said Majkrzak. “Fish
that size can weigh close to 35
pounds. Previously, muskies
49 inches or more could be
caught and kept.”
If stocking of muskies in
Franklin Lake, Lake Lizzie or
Loon Lake were approved by
the DNR, this wouldn’t take
place until September 2016.
In the meantime, county
commissioners appear to be
united in their beliefs that further research is needed to
assure that stocking of more
muskies will not have adverse
effects in area lakes.
Official wording for a
county board resolution is
likely to be available before
the end of calendar year 2015.
The board likely will vote on
the resolution sometime in
December.

Hunters Register More Than 128,000
Deer Through Third Weekend
Minnesota firearms hunters registered 128,174 deer through
the third weekend of firearms deer season, up from 112,715
from the same period in 2014, according to the Minnesota
Department of Natural Resources.
So far this year during special hunts and the archery, early
antlerless and firearms seasons, hunters have harvested 145,383
deer, up from the 2014 to-date harvest total of 128,134. Preliminary numbers show that the number of deer registered rose 13.5
percent from 2014.
Buck harvest during the firearms season was up 18.4 percent
from last year, indicating that the population has in fact grown
from its low point two springs ago. Zone 1 total firearms harvest
was up 11 percent, Zone 2 was up 15.5 percent and Zone 3 was
up 7.7 percent. Buck harvest was up significantly in all zones.
The DNR has projected the 2015 total deer harvest to be
between 140,000 to 155,000 deer. The 2014 total harvest after
last year’s conservative season was just over 139,000.
In much of Minnesota, the last day of the firearms deer season was November 15. The northern rifle zone season continued
through November 22. Additional deer will be harvested during
the late southeastern season, which runs Saturday, November
21, through Sunday, November 29; the muzzleloader season,
which begins Saturday, November 28, and continues through
Sunday, December 13; and the archery season, which runs
through Thursday, December 31.
Final numbers from all deer seasons will be available in January.
New this year, hunters can preview an interactive deer information tool being developed by the DNR at
www.mndnr.gov/deermap. This map is the first step toward
launching an online application that delivers useful information
hunters need and want. Hunters are encouraged to take a look at
the application, discuss it and provide the DNR with feedback.
More information on deer management can be found at
www.mndnr.gov/deer.

Huge Thank You
A huge Thank You to the students who performed so well
during every night of Mary Poppins at BLHS. They could not
have done such a job without all the help of the adults who gave
100's of hours of their time, lost hours away from their day jobs
and gave up evenings with their families. It was definitely a
group effort which is a hallmark of a great musical production.
Thank you BL Review for all articles you were willing to put

AND another huge thank you to all 1269 persons who came to
see the great children of Battle Lake perform their hearts out for
you. Your cheers and applause made it all worthwhile!

Junior High Boys Hoops off to good start
by Trevor Johnson
vs. Hillcrest
The Battle Lake Junior High Boys Basketball teams began
their season November 6th with a trip to Hillcrest Lutheran
Academy in Fergus Falls, and both teams were able to start the
season off in the win column. The 8th grade boys got off to
somewhat of a slow start and trailed 14-10 after the first half. A
much better effort on both ends of the floor in the second half
helped the boys prevail in the end, in what turned out to be an
exciting first game with several lead changes in the final minutes, and defeated the Comets 27-25. Brennan Amundson led
the Battlers with 11 points and Dillon Christensen tallied 8.
The 7th grade Battlers got their season off to a fast start,
jumping out to an early 10 point lead. Cold shooting and some
costly turnovers allowed the Comets to close the gap, but the
Battlers regained their momentum and built the lead back to
double digits. In a shortened one half, 16-minute game, the
young Battlers still managed to pour in 29 points, and at the
buzzer defeated the Comets 29-20. Kyler Leabo, Brady VanErp
and Nick Carter-Fischer paced the Battlers with six points each.
vs. Underwood
Another slow start by the 8th grade boys found them trailing
at the half 22-16 as they struggled with rebounding and defending the post. An energetic effort in the second half saw the Battlers take their first lead of the game with just a few minutes
remaining, as some strong pressure defense by Dillon Christensen forced several Underwood turnovers. With a little over a
minute remaining, Underwood hit a 3-point shot to tie the game
at 41. The Battlers came up empty on their final two possessions and Underwood came away with a 44-41 victory. The loss
evened the 8th grade record at 1-1. Brennan Amundson scored
14 points to lead the Battlers. Riley Leabo added 11 and Thomas
Himmelspach chipped in nine.
The 7th grade boys again jumped out to a quick start, as a
strong defensive effort forced several Underwood turnovers,
resulting in several transition baskets. The first half break found
the Battlers with a commanding 23-6 lead. The Battlers continued with the same intensity in the second half, and their speed
and quickness proved to be too much for for the opposition,
winning handily over the Rockets 44-8. Brady VanErp led the
way with 12 points and Kayne Cameron added nine, in a game
which saw nine of the 10 boys on the team hit the scoring column. The win improved the 7th grade record to 2-0.
vs. Rothsay
Finally, the 8th grade Battlers came out with intensity and
enthusiasm and jumped out to an early lead which would carry
them thru the entire game. Better execution on the offensive
end and a strong defensive effort propelled them to a 22-10 halftime lead. An even better performance in the second half and
several baskets as a result of great offensive rebounding, helped
the Battlers to earn an impressive 48-17 victory. Thomas Himmelspach and Connor Drake did an outstanding job rebounding
on both ends of the floor in this game. Riley Leabo led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points. Brennan Amundson finished with 12, Connor Drake 10 and Jacob Hite netted eight.
The win improved the 8th grade record to 2-1.
Staying consistent, the 7th grade boys again jumped on the
opponent quickly, and several easy transition baskets helped the
Battlers to a 20-10 halftime lead. Committing to working even
harder on defense in the second half, the scrappy Battlers held
the Tigers to just one basket and 2-free throws. Rewarding their
defensive effort and strong rebounding were many transition
opportunities that led to several high percentage shots, and the
end result was a convincing 39-14 victory. Tough perimeter
defense by Isaac Hallberg and Brady VanErp forced many
turnovers and made offensive possessions difficult for the
Tigers. Once again, nine out of the 10 boys got into the scoring
column, with Drew Durbin leading the way with 10 points. The
win moves the 7th grade to 3-0 on the season.
vs. Ashby
The 8th grade boys took a step backwards after a strong game
just two days earlier, struggling to gain any offensive rhythm
and getting outrebounded, both on offense and defense. Some
extremely cold shooting in the first half also contributed to a 188 halftime deficit for the Battlers. The second half saw more of
the same as the Battlers battled poor shooting from the field and
the free throw line, making only one of 12 free throw opportunities. Ashby controlled the boards and had a huge rebounding
advantage which in the end helped them beat the Battlers 3917. Brennan Amundson led the Battlers with seven points. The
loss dropped the Battlers to 2-2.
The 7th grade continued their fast starts, again relying on
some strong defense and aggressive rebounding to assist them in
their transition offense. As a result, the Battlers were able to
jump to a 33-10 halftime lead. Half number two saw more of
the same as the Battlers built an even bigger lead, going on to
win easily 57-28. Some good offensive possessions in which
the boys worked really well as a team, helped nine of the 10
boys again make their way into the scoring column. Brady VanErp and Wyatt Severson led the scoring with 14 points each and
Nick Carter-Fischer added 11. Isaac Hallberg, Drew Durbin and
Kayne Cameron did an excellent job on the boards. The win
improves the 7th grade to 4-0.
vs. Parkers Prairie
Rebounding from a loss, the 8th grade boys got back on track
against a much bigger Parkers Prairie team, battling hard the
entire game to come away with well deserved 35-29 win. Executing well on the offensive end and some good looks at the basket got the Battlers off to a good start, and strong post defense
by Thomas Himmelspach and Brennan Amundson gave the Battlers a 20-13 halftime lead. Cold shooting by the Battlers
allowed the Panthers to get within two points. The Battlers then
turned up the defensive pressure, again, doing a good job
defending the post. They also attacked the glass much better,
and several offensive rebounds created easy inside baskets.
Riley Leabo paced the Battlers with 13 points and Brennan
Amundson added eight. The 8th grade is now 3-2 on the season.
The 7th grade boys got off to a much slower start against the
Panthers, missing several easy shots in the first half, and struggling in their offensive possessions. But again, their solid,
scrappy defense made things difficult for the opponent, which
allowed the Battlers to end the first half with a 16-4 lead. The
second half saw the Battlers build a big lead as their tenacious
defense led to many easy scoring opportunities, which this time
they capitalized on. A late second half rally made things a little
interesting, but the defense prevailed and made stops when they
needed to, helping the 7th grade Battlers gain a 30-22 win,
improving their record to 5-0 on the season. Eight of the 10
boys scored in the game, with Kayne Cameron leading the way
with seven.
