What’s Inside w . P a t e r s o n U E Z . c o m 1 A Message from Mayor Jeff Jones Greetings; As Mayor, my visions for the City of Paterson include many exciting projects that I’d like to share with you, the business community. One key goal of this administration was to create “Paterson P.M.” – A return of nightlife to make Paterson a family friendly place to visit as a nighttime and weekend leisure and tourism opportunity! To date, Paterson P.M. has been quite successful in bringing cultural functions to the city during the evening hours. People found out that they do not have to travel to New York and other places for evening entertainment. Look for many more Paterson P.M. activities that you can enjoy right here in your own neighborhoods. When we mention “tourism,” several Paterson sites are being targeted for revitalization. The Great Falls National Park, the Armory, Hinchcliff Stadium and our five bridges are among those sites. These are vital economic ventures that we are capitalizing on to exemplify and to restore Paterson to her “glory days” as a thriving metropolis for the arts & culture, manufacturing, world-class entertainment and tourism. I will keep you updated on our progress as we embrace our past and plan for our future. Paterson has been chosen as one of four cities including Los Angeles, New York and Canada to host a Chinese delegation from China to join in discussions of returning manufacturing to our footprint. This visit will afford the group an opportunity to see firsthand our city and how the partnership can be developed between Paterson and China. As we scan Paterson’s skyline, we continue to see great industrial factories and textile buildings that stand as monuments to our past prominence in the history of the United States. We are committed to revitalizing this city as we focus on the beautiful architecture found throughout our buildings, our five bridges and the landscape; for these are great attributes to build upon. As we structure our plans for the city, we commit to positioning ourselves to be self-sustaining, to generate more revenue and to the creation of new jobs. One of the main features in accomplishing this is to produce our own bottled water. The water is developed through the Municipal Utilities Authority from a bottling plant in Blairstown, New Jersey. The first bottles of our Great Falls spring water is here and will be distributed throughout the city’s vending machines, restaurants and in time, in our local retail stores. Revenue from the sale of Great Falls spring water will ultimately generate more dollars for the city and reduce taxes in the end. In our efforts to ensure that the entire city is in concert, we are designing a series of head-to-head, quarterly roundtable discussions with realtors, developers, health officials, recreational leaders and others to further explore the growth and development of our city’s “gems in the rough.” One of the catalysts in this economic strategy is the Paterson Urban Enterprise Zone. It is through the efforts of the UEZ that Paterson and the business community is able to benefit from the many economic development opportunities that they offer. Paterson’s businesses are on the rise, attracted by our low 3 1/2% sales tax opportunity, as well as the economic benefits created by UEZ’s innovative programs. The excitement is contagious, so join forces with us to ensure that Paterson continues to be on the cutting-edge of revitalization and stabilization for the next century! I wish you much luck in your business endeavors and welcome you to work with us to reach our mutual goals for Paterson’s rebirth, growth and development. Sincerely, Jeff Jones Jeff Jones Mayor w w w . P a t e r s o n U E Z . c o m 2 UEZ Members Make a Difference . . . . President Barack Obama pays visit to Lowe’s Sunday, September 4, 2011 will go down in the history books for Lowe’s Store Manager, Michael Bergamo and his team. That’s the day that President Barack Obama made a surprise visit to Lowe’s on Route 20 in Paterson. Below is a portion of Michael’s conversation with the President. “What a great two days here in Paterson. Lowe’s helped over 3300 community members yesterday and those numbers were increased today. The President, Governor Christie and Congressmen Pascrell were welcomed to our store with cheers. They walked the volunteer line, shaking hands and taking pictures with community members and Lowe’s associates. My conversation with the President lasted about five minutes. He thanked me for our efforts with the community and for giving back. He said: Michael, that was amazing that you got the store reopened and running the day after the storm... I said: Sir, we never closed. He said Michael let’s take a picture together... He asked me to get some of my team members into the photo. He said: Michael look over into that camera, he’s my guy. I thanked him so much for being part of our day. He said I will send you a copy of our photo, I’ve got your information. He then proceeded to meet and greet the rest of the crowd, taking pictures and shaking hands. He left to a roar of applause.” During the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, the Lowes’ team joined Rev. David King of the Paterson Seven Day Adventist Church with ”Feed the Children” project and set up the relief site in the parking lot at Lowe’s. Together they provided thousands of residents with three truckloads of cleaning supplies, food and other emergency items. “To give back to the community of that magnitude, was a blessing for us,” said Mr. Bergamo. When asked about President Obama’s visit, he stated, “The President’s visit was not political, he was just being a good human being. For one-half hour he chose to be a part of our community. When 95% of your associates are residents of Paterson, why not give back to this community? It’s the right thing to do. The success of the store is a reflection of community support and a great team of associates.” Our hats are off to the fine people at Lowe’s for a job well done. Trolley lends a hand . . . T he UEZ Trolley helped transport the flood victims from local shelters to various stores to purchase food and supplies in the aftermath of Hurrricane Irene. We are very grateful to the hard work and dedication of UEZ Trolley driver, Ileana Roger and the Paterson Parking Authority. The UEZ Free Trolley Service began last year to help promote economic development within the UEZ business districts, and continues to provide free service to downtown Paterson, the Farmers’ Market and the Route 20 Corridor. The real test of the city’s fortitude was exemplefied during this crisis, as people from all walks of life came together as true Americans to lend a helping hand to those that were affected by the devastating flood waters. Many thanks from the entire city for a job well-done. UEZ Trolley driver, Ileana Roger w w w . P a t e r s o n U E Z . c o m 3 SBDC activities during Hurricane Irene Disaster T he recent flooding from Hurricane Irene proved to be devastating for the City of Paterson in so many ways, and the negative impact it had on businesses was very hard to imagine. Although City offices had to close due to the flooding, the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) located at 131 Ellison Street remained open to answer phone calls and see Paterson business owners who were desperately seeking answers on where to turn for disaster loans and insurance questions. SBDC employees were also proactive in distributing FEMA forms to Paterson residents when they were looking for information. As a result of all the questions, Kate Muldoon, Regional Director of the SBDC organized an all day open house for businesses that need assistance through the disaster, particularly in the area of financing. Although many businesses did not have flood insurance, they needed to continue operations. Most of the companies who came in during the day were quite substantial in size, and most seemed to be exploring all the resources available to them. Paula Star, Loan Outreach Coordinator for UCEDC was on hand to discuss hurricane relief microloans up to $50,000, and Small Business Administration (SBA) information was also distributed for those needing additional relief funding. Later that week, the SBDC director joined Freeholder Bruce James, Passaic County Economic Director Deborah Hoffman, SBA District Director Alfred Titone, and Department of labor Business Representative Don Escue to tour seven businesses severely flooded in the Bunker Hill area of Paterson. SBDC Consultants, Roberto Alferez and Bob Hille provide counseling to a Paterson businessman. Continuing with our efforts to assist businesses, the SBDC cosponsored a special meeting of elected officials, federal, state and local agencies for the business community that will provide information on grants, loans and the types of assistance available to your company to assist business owners during this difficult time. The event was held on October 3 from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM at Passaic County Technical Institute Auditorium, in Wayne, NJ. Although the flood waters have receded, there is still much work to be done for many Paterson businesses. The SBDC is available to assist your business in many ways such as individual counseling and training programs, legal contracts, HR issues, marketing, and now special programs are being developed for disaster recovery plans. If you should need any assistance for your business, contact the SBDC at 973-754-8695. Additional services you should know about . . . . I f your business has experienced any issues with the flood, you can get help by reaching out to the Workforce Investment Board of Passaic County (WIB). They have federal funds available to hire temporary staff to assist with the clean up. If you need your building repainted, or debris picked up, etc., WIB will pick up the cost of the person hired as long as the damage was caused by the flood. If you need employees in general for job opportunities that you currently have, they can also assist you with experienced personnel. For more information call Natalie Provenzale, Director at (73) 569-4020 or the local WIB office at (973) 340-3400 ext. 7212. If your business needs assistance with any graffiti problems, you may contact the UEZ at (973) 321-1212 ext. 2276 and ask for Penni Forestieri. The UEZ is partnering with the Clean Communities Department to alleviate graffiti throughout the City. w w w . P a t e r s o n U E Z . c o m 4 About the UEZ Program The Urban Enterprise Zone (UEZ) is a state-designated program to alleviate unemployment in approximately 37 municipalities throughout the state of New Jersey. The City of Paterson was designated as an Urban Enterprise Zone in 1994 and plays a vital role in the restoration of Paterson. The sales tax collected in Paterson has provided the UEZ with the funds to administer 71 economic development projects. The following list is just an example of the programs and projects which offer a great number of advantages to UEZ members: t t t t t t Today, Paterson retains its proud history, and with the recently designated Great Falls National Park, Paterson is making a true transformation to the economic engine that will generate hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars for the city. Central to this revitalization is the UEZ Program, enabling UEZ retail members to charge 3½ % sales tax giving them a competitive edge over other businesses. All UEZ business members however, benefit from the tax exemption allowed for operating supplies. 100% exemption from the NJ State Sales and Use Tax for the purchase of all tangible property (excluding motor vehicles) includes the following: #VTJOFTT*NQSPWFNFOU(SBOUT 4JEFXBML.BUDIJOH(SBOUT 3FWPMWJOH-PBO1SPHSBN 7JEFP4VSWFJMMBODF$BNFSBT .BJO4USFFU4USFFUTDBQF 4NBMM#VTJOFTT%FWFMPQNFOU$FOUFS t t t t t 0öDF4VQQMJFT 0öDF&RVJQNFOU 4FSWJDFTJODMVEJOHJOTUBMMBUJPO #VJMEJOH.BUFSJBMT 3FQBJSTBOEJNQSPWFNFOUTUP FYJTUJOHQSPQFSUJFT Business Improvement Grants Mario Plumbing Supply S ince 1984 Mario Plumbing has been a fixture on Broadway & Auburn Street, providing wholesale and retail plumbing and heating supplies to both commercial and residential clients. P a t e r s o n U E Z . c o m 6 UEZ Business Spotlight Classic Auto Body shows the true spirit of America . . . O n Sunday, September 11th, Mario Tommolillo, owner of Classic Auto Body and a UEZ Advisory Board Member, hosted a memorial service commemorating the 10th Anniversary of 911. Advisory Board Chairman, Rev. Andrew Bennett presided over the ceremony offering prayers for the families of the victims and the many police, fire and emergency personnel who lost their lives in the most devastating terrorist attack that stunned the world. The memorial service was held at 33 Beckwith Avenue where a majestic 60’ x 20’ large red, white and blue mural is displayed. On Tuesday, September 27th the Mural was officially dedicated as a memorial to the 911 families in World Trade Center bombing. We were honored to have Congressman William Pascrell and the Commander of the American Legion, Harold Liberatore and members of his brigade to be among the invited guests. The idea for the mural was the brain-child of Mr. Mario Tommillo, who commissioned the artist, Mr. Abdul Gonsalves, to paint a mural depicting a sense of pride, unity and patriotism of all Americans. Mr. Tommolillo said he was moved to do this because this is something that we all lived through, and it shows who we are as Americans. The first picture on the mural is the American eagle, the second is the hands of fellow Americans working in unity, and the third scene is the tablets in the hands of the Statue of Liberty which reads “One nations under God”, on which our country was founded. Mr. Gonsalves, known as PAWS in the artist world, said he was honored to be chosen by Mr. Tommolillo to undertake this project because of his love for Paterson and his respect for Mr. Tommolillo. Mr. Gonsalves moved back to Paterson from Cleveland, Ohio in 2002 and was commissioned to paint the mural in August, 2011 and it took him about 40 working hours to complete. He envisions doing more murals in Paterson, since he is a strong advocate for the Arts. Classic Auto Body has been a member of the UEZ since its inception in 1994 and has been a pillar in the Paterson business community since the early 1980’s. A special thanks to Mario and his staff for their continued support of the Paterson community.
