Theme Parks/Attractions
JRA is widely considered as one of the world’s leading
planning and design consultancies specializing in the design
and development of theme parks and attractions. Whether
it’s conceptualizing, planning, designing and implementing
a major theme park or providing a creative makeover to an
existing attraction, JRA is known for creating experiences that
consistently exceed expectations.
Our firm attributes our long-term success to an ability to
carefully develop each attraction with a special sensitivity
to local and national cultures. We are proud of the fact
that our international work takes on the look and feel of the
content and culture of each project and are ever wary of
“Americanized” or “cookie cutter” design solutions.
Key members of our senior staff have extensive operating/
management experience with major entertainment
destinations. Because of this, we bring to our designs
an operator’s focus on issues like functionality, revenue
generating capability, accessibility, safety and maintainability.
The long-term value of this orientation cannot be overstated.
Above all, we champion collaborative innovation, an
integrative way of thinking and problem solving. The best
solutions cannot be developed in a vacuum; they result
from a dynamic relationship among client, content, applied
specialists and the designer. Over many years of largeproject experience, we have formed and constantly renewed
a global network of collaborators; we know where to find
and how to fashion the best creative, most efficient, and most
enduring solutions. Building on our core group, we tailor
customized collaborative teams for each project. Selected Client List

LEGOLAND® California
C a r l s b a d , C a l i fo r n i a
LEGOLAND® California is a unique interactive family theme park
dedicated to the imagination and creativity of children. Resting
within 128 acres of a park-like setting, LEGOLAND® California
takes its inspirations from the company’s world famous LEGO bricks.
Within the park are five main activity areas: Village Green, Fun
Town, Castle Hill, Imagination Zone and Miniland. Each area relates
to a different LEGO play theme and features a variety of interactives,
rides, shows, playscapes and building workshops. Working closely
with the LEGO Group, Sasaki and HOK, JRA provided master
planning and attraction design for this popular theme park.
LEGOLAND® Windsor
Windsor, England
Situated within 150 acres of wooded
landscape, LEGOLAND® Windsor has
five main activity areas, interspersed with
“peaceful clusters.” Each area relates
to a different LEGO play theme, with
interactive rides, shows, playscapes,
building workshops, driving schools and
a “Miniland” — a series of model towns
and scenes from European cities, recreated in astonishing detail from millions
of LEGO bricks.
Working closely with the LEGO Group
and several other firms, JRA provided
master planning, attraction design,
graphic design and scripting for several
live shows.
Angry Birds Activity Park St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg, Russia
JRA worked with Rovio and FORTGROUP to develop the
new Angry Birds Activity Park St. Petersburg within the new
Europolis Mall. The attraction is a first of-its-kind family
destination that blends the exciting world of Angry Birds
with the rich history and culture of St. Petersburg. Through
a combination of scenic environments, theatrical lighting,
dynamic sound, media and special effects, guests become
immersed within the mysterious Piggy Island – home to the
Angry Birds and their nemeses the bad Piggies.
Throughout the exploration of the Island, guests have
the opportunity to participate in wide variety of activities
that allow them to be the engine of their own excitement.
The facility features a number of learning opportunities
that educate guests in a fun and engaging manner. In
addition, guests can sit down for quick snack within a
colorful café, purchase unique Angry Birds gifts, clothing
and memorabilia within a specialty store, and even host
their next birthday within one of attraction’s several themed
party rooms.
Opened in 2015, the new Angry Birds Activity Park is the
premiere place in St. Petersburg for guests of all ages to
eat, play and learn.

Birdseye View
In July 2014, the JRA-designed Sochi
Adventure Park opened in Sochi Russia,
which was the home of last year’s Olympic
games. JRA provided master planning
through schematic design for the park
which was then implemented by the client’s
internal team. JRA also assisted the client
team with limited art direction and project
management.
JRA developed a 53-hectare park concept
with detailed sketches and designs for the
several theme zones. In 2014 Sochi Park
opened its first stage with a 20-hectare park
that will offer a wide range of attractions
reflecting milestones in the nation’s history as
well as thematic areas and shows inspired
by fairy tales and sagas.

HarborLand
Ningbo, Zhejiang, China
JRA provided complete master planning and design for HarborLand,
which is part of an urban development in Ningbo’s Beilun District.
Located at the base of Ningbo’s Phoenix Mountain, the 20-hectare (50acre) theme park features a variety of rides, activities and shows based
on a fairy-tale story about two children who discover their destinies as
descendents of the phoenix.
Working with its client — a government organization called the NETD,
which was charged with creating a 39.6-square-kilometer development
zone in Ningbo — JRA developed the phoenix story as the basis for the
park’s design. The story follows Feng Feng and Huang Huang (whose
names, together, mean “phoenix”) as they escape the imprisonment
of an evil wizard, travel the world to experience phoenix stories
from many different cultures, then take their places as the prince and
princess of Phoenix City, where all of the world’s phoenixes gather for
celebration.
Specific areas of the park include: the “Flight of the Phoenix” coaster
and a variety of family rides, a sky cycle, a character carousel and live
storytelling show, immersive theaters and character shows, a children’s
driving school and archeological dig, a rapid river ride, bumper cars, a
shopping bazaar and a variety of festive games.

Universal Studios® Retail
Orlando, Florida
JRA worked closely with Universal Studios® Florida to provide
planning and conceptual design for several
retail shops within the park and at Orlando International Airport.
JRA’s specific responsibilities included theming of the interior retail
spaces as well as exterior identification signage.
Universal Studios® Florida
Orlando, Florida
In collaboration with Universal’s art directors and
project managers, JRA provided design development
and coordination of contract documents to complete
the “set streets” for Universal Studios® Florida.
Hollywood Boulevard re-creates the era’s Art Deco
opulence and elegance. Music, props and period
autos parked along the street complete the authentic
reproduction of Hollywood in the height of the
dazzling 1920's. New York City’s ambiance
was captured through close attention to authentic
architectural detailing and materials. Built for filming
purposes, this cosmopolitan streetscape was achieved
by reproducing historic buildings and architectural
details characteristic of the Big Apple’s long and
varied history.
The Amity area reflects the quaint charm of a
small, northeast seaside town. This harbor setting
realistically reproduces a seafront environment with its
grey clapboard buildings, nautical fixtures and
hardware. The maritime architectural ornaments and
details, the lapping water and the boats creaking in
their slips combine to create a memorable seaside
visit in a film studio backlot.
Curious George Goes to TownSM
Universal Studios® Florida • Orlando, Florida
Working with Universal Creative, Morris
Architects and SCS Interactive, Inc., JRA helped
to bring the famous Curious George storybooks
to life in a vibrant and fanciful area within
Universal Studios® Florida, called Curious
George Goes to TownSM.
Children and adults alike can enjoy a myriad
of water and dry play elements and interactive
experiences. For those who simply want to
observe all the action, this multi-age attraction
offers ample space for spectators.
JRA assisted with the original story line as well
as provided area master planning, developed
interactive concepts and detailed design of the
facades and play elements.
Fievel’s Playland® & A Day in the Park with Barney™
Universal Studios® Florida • Orlando, Florida
Basing our theme on Steven Speilberg’s animated film “An American Tail: Fievel
Goes West,” JRA worked with Universal’s Planning and Development team to create a
“backlot” of movie props and “mouse-built” contraptions to produce this one-of-a-kind
playground. Children and their parents can explore the fantasy play elements and
“giant-scaled” environments, take a ride down a 30-foot-high water slide, jump into a
giant “bean skillet” filled with plastic balls or splash in the interactive 25-foot tall “water
pump” fountain.
Based on the acclaimed international television series “Barney & Friends,” "A Day in
the Park With Barney" was designed as a place where children can do more than just
meet the purple dinosaur. Children participate in an environmental theater filled with
brilliantly colored flora, trees and indoor clouds and stars. Outside the theater, there are
several play and learning areas for children and their parents.
Working closely with Universal Studios® Florida, The Lyons Group of Dallas and
architects PVK of Orlando, JRA provided planning and conceptual design and
assisted with the detail design for the Barney children’s attraction and play area.
Mr. Freeze™ Rollercoaster
S i x F l a g s O v e r Te x a s • S i x F l a g s S t . L o u i s
JRA has worked with the Six Flags theme parks on a
variety of projects over the years, including several
themed Gotham areas. Most recently, JRA was
responsible for the concept and detail design for the
popular Mr. Freeze™ attractions at both Six Flags Over
Texas and Six Flags St. Louis. Specifically, JRA designed
the themed interiors and exteriors.
Themed around the hit Warner Bros. movie “Batman &
Robin,” the coaster’s queue is found inside Snowy’s Ice
Cream Factory, where the evil Mr. Freeze™ has secretly
set up a covert cryogenics lab. After a refreshing wait
in line, visitors are blasted at speeds approaching 70
miles per-hour through a 190-foot icy tunnel. They are
then hurled through 1,300 feet of diving, twisting track
before they are sent back to the icy starting tunnel — in
reverse!
The linear induction motion coasters used in the Mr.
Freeze™ attractions are manufactured by Phoenix Rides.
Tree House Island
S i x F l a g s W h i te Wa te r • A t l a nta , Ge o rg i a
Boasting more than 75 water play features,
White Water Tree House Island is one of
the largest water play systems in the world.
Highlights include a playground net climb with
four waterslides capable of accommodating
500 guests at one time and a variety of water
play devices that encourage interaction.
This combination of water play and
playground entertains and challenges visitors
of all ages. JRA provided complete planning
and design for this award-winning attraction.
Boomtown
S i x F l a g s O v e r Te x a s • D a l l a s , Te x a s
Through the use of themed architecture, detailed facades, authentic props and
environmental signage, JRA helped Six Flags Over Texas re-create a deserted
Texas oil town of the late 1800's. Throughout this area, visitors are surrounded
by abandoned buildings, old trucks, dilapidated stores and even a vacant train
depot.
Boomtown serves as a thematic link between the park’s Gotham/D.C. Comics
area and Texas Old South area.
Although largely a scenic section of the park, Boomtown also features a popular
themed restaurant called Dry Hole Charlie’s.
JRA provided story line development, concept design and schematic design.
Warner Brothers Backlot
Six Flags St. Louis • Eureka, Missouri
Warner Bros. Backlot at Six Flags St. Louis features
the Batmobile Plaza, Batman The Ride, Gotham City
Park, Gotham cityscapes stretching over 500 feet,
two theaters, Studio Commissary, a 1950’s burger
restaurant and a 1920’s gas station.
JRA provided master planning, conceptual,schematic
and detail design for these elements within the
Backlot. The two-story facades were designed to
resemble the cityscapes of Gotham, the fictional city
from the blockbuster “Batman” movies. In addition,
JRA worked on the design and landscaping of
Gotham City Park, retail and food service carts and
all signage and graphics.
Calabar Theme Park
Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria
JRA recently worked with the Cross River State Government and Six Flags to develop a
conceptual master plan for a regional theme park planned near Calabar, Nigeria.
The park will be located on approximately 250 acres (100 hectares) and will feature
a number of exciting rides, shows, attractions and environments based upon Nigerian
stories, myths and folktales.
Ocean Park Hong Kong
Aberdeen, Hong Kong, China
Ocean Park hired JRA to revise the original master plan for the park’s
Lowlands theme area. The study analyzed all existing attractions, the
goals of the park and expected attendance increases. The subsequent
master plan called for renovating existing attractions and using available
land for new attractions like a themed rapid-river ride and a 4,000-seat
Dolphinarium. In addition, the plan called for a new front gate, entry
plaza and retail and food venues. The entire master plan was designed to
incorporate the park’s existing marine life and animal education theme.
Bubba Gump Shrimp Shack
Kings Island • Cincinnati, Ohio
If Forrest Gump were to open a restaurant, what would it look like? That’s the question
that designers at JRA asked as they developed theming, creative interpretation and art
direction for the Bubba Gump Shrimp Shack at Kings Island.
Using the 1994 Academy Award-winning Paramount movie as a touchstone, JRA
designers, in conjunction with then Paramount Parks’ Design & Entertainment group,
decided that Forrest would decorate a restaurant of his own as a scrapbook, one that
emphasized the helpful people and significant events in his life. Both the interior and
exterior of the building offer guests severa visual encounters with Forrest, while the
overall restaurant theme recalls the taste and feel of a 1970's coastal eatery with retro
signage, nostalgic lighting, nautical murals and oceanic delicacies.
Happy Days Diner
Kings Dominion • Richmond, Virginia | Carowinds • Charlotte, North Carolina
JRA designed and produced new restaurants at Kings
Dominion in Richmond, Virginia, and Carowinds in
Charlotte, North Carolina. The parks hired JRA to create
the thematic treatments for the restaurants which celebrate
the pop culture icons owned by Paramount Parks’ parent
Viacom.
The Happy Days Diner at Kings Dominion was inspired by
the TV show “Happy Days” and has the look and feel of a
1950's diner. Mementos from the show are spotlighted, as
is footage featuring Fonzie, Richie Cunningham and other
characters from the beloved sitcom.
Paramount London
London, England
JRA is currently overseeing the master
plan and attraction development for
the planned Paramount Theme Park in
London, where we are working with
a a variety of designers, intellectual
properties and license holders to create
the guest experience.

Ripley’s Believe It or Not! London Museum
London, England
London’s Piccadilly Circus welcomed an exciting new attraction in 2008,
as the JRA-designed Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! Museum opened within the
iconic London Pavilion entertainment complex. Spread over five levels, the
museum occupies approximately 25,000 square feet of the Pavilion, and has
already become one of London’s major tourist destinations.
Ripley’s Believe It or Not! London Museum
London, England
The museum features artifacts from the unique collection of American cartoonist
and adventurer Robert Ripley. For over 40 years, Ripley – often referred to as the
real-life Indiana Jones – travelled the world collecting the unbelievable,
inexplicable and one-of-a-kind. Artifact highlights within the London attraction
include an actual section of the Berlin Wall, genuine shrunken heads, a vampire
killing kit, a four-meter long model of London’s Tower Bridge made out of
matchsticks and a 545-pound meteorite.
JRA worked with Ripley Entertainment Inc. and London Bridge Entertainment
Partners LLP to conceptualize, design and produce the attraction.

the next few years, the Antalya Theme Park and
Water Park will encompass a wondrous assortment
of world-class attractions and amenities.

four theme areas. The park master plan offers a
balanced mix of attractions, including thrill rides,
family rides, interactive play elements, live and
media-based shows, restaurants and retail.

the theme park and waterpark, and is currently
providing art direction for implementation of the
waterpark.
World Expo 2017 Attraction
Astana, Kazakhstan
JRA is providing planning and exhibit design for an attraction at the World
Expo 2017 in Astana, Kazakhstan.
Grand Hall at Union Station
St. Louis, Missouri
On the day it opened in 1894, Union Station was the largest and busiest train
station in the world, and it required a train shed with the largest roof span in the
world to accommodate its 42 tracks, which served 100,000 passengers per day.
Union Station’s Grand Hall, with its vaulted ceiling, would embrace millions of
personal stories, from the revelry of visitors celebrating St. Louis’ 1904 World’s
Fair to the reunion of soldiers with their families after World War II. But with
the aviation industry literally taking flight in the 1950s and 60s, and despite
its designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1970, Union Station and its
Grand Hall began to fall into disrepair and neglect. In 2012, Lodging Hospitality
Management (LHM) purchased the property and were tasked with finding unique
ways to drive visitation to Union Station’s new hotel, dining, and shopping options
while still maintaining the Grand Hall’s historic character.
The solution to this challenge became a first-of-its kind projection mapping
experience. Projected on the Grand Hall’s 65-foot tall ceilings and across the
entire space, this 3D experience is comprised of 30 vignettes, all stretching the
barrier of creative design, innovation and historical storytelling. Visitors can take
in the remarkable animation in vivid color with music and narration of historical
portions provided by television and film personalities closely connected to St. Louis,
including John Goodman, Jon Hamm, Bob Costas. Because the show differs slightly
with every hourly evening performance, visitors have reason to experience this
kaleidoscope of images again and again.
JRA provided concept and scripting for Union Station’s Grand Hall Experience, with
media produced by Technomedia.
Blackberry Farm
Aurora, Illinois
JRA, in cooperation with Upland Design, provided an overall master plan, outlining a
series of enhancements for the popular Blackberry Farm family park in Aurora, Illinois.
Located just outside of Chicago, Blackberry Farm is a living history museum set upon 54
scenic acres containing a lake, several ponds and a meandering stream. Phase I of
the master plan includes infrastructure upgrades to the park’s concession areas, events
plaza and picnic area, as well a new adventure play area and boat dock for pedal and
fishing boats. Future phases may include additional interactive play areas, a climbing
wall, self-powered train cars, and a small water tower themed to represent a structure
from early pioneer days.

Kings City
Eilat, Israel
Kings City is a mixed-use biblical theme park based on the stories of King Solomon. JRA’s design team
used bright colors, ornate fabrics, precious metals, marble, gems and modern day lighting effects to create
the park’s general aesthetic, influenced by the architecture of ancient Middle Eastern cities.
While being taken back in time by this beautiful look-and-feel, guests of Kings City can experience a
number of attractions including a 3D motion-based simulator based on King Solomon’s travels, a cave
walk-through depicting scenes from the Bible, and a boat ride through a series of biblical scenes that ends
with a thrilling plunge down a two-story waterfall.
The Merlion
Sentosa Island • Singapore
JRA designed and produced a new experience for one of Sentosa
Island’s most popular attractions, the 37-meter-tall Merlion. This
whimsical re-envisioning includes an animated theater show, a lively
pre-show and greater guest interactivity.
The attraction’s main theater showcases a legendary eleventh-century
storm that threatened Prince Sang Nila Utama as he traveled to the
island he would name “Singapura,” or Lion City; along with the
development of the Merlion as a symbol of welcome and guardian
of Singapore’s good fortune. The guest experience culminates with a
trip to the top of the Merlion’s head to take in a view of a Singapore
harbor that has captivated island-goers for decades.
New Yuan Ming Palace
Zhuhai, Guangdong, China
Working closely with EDAW Hong Kong, JRA provided theming as part of a
larger feasibility analysis and renovation plan for the New Yuan Ming Palace
in Zhuhai, China. Since its opening in 1997, this partial reproduction of
Beijing’s once famous Old Summer Palace has been a popular destination in
southern China.
The renovation plan was launched to reinvigorate the 140-hectare park in
anticipation of its 10 year anniversary. New attractions and programs have
been added to available space, while existing attractions are being adapted
to meet theever-demanding market expectations. Upon completion of the
renovation, the New Yuan Ming Palace will provide enriched activities and
new highlights to the visitors.
Ponte 16 Resort

FINANCE HOLDING
JRA provided a conceptual master plan for an ambitious new
urban development planned for a former manufacturing site in the
Bansko-Razlog Valley region of Bulgaria. JRA worked with Pirinland
Investments Ltd. and Alfa Developments, along with feasibility
consultant AECOM to develop a 10-year strategic plan outlining
how the site can be transformed into a year-round development.
Specific site components are to include residential, entertainment,
food and hotels, with an underlying theme based upon the area’s
ties to water.
Al Jazeera Park
Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (UAE)
JRA recently worked with Al Qasba Development Authority
(QDA) on the re-development of Sharjah’s Al Jazeera Park.
The 36-acre Al Jazeera Park was a popular site back in the
1970s but since has lost its overall charm and prominence.
HH Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of
Sharjah and Member of the Supreme Council, wishes to
rebuild Al Jazeera Park as a theme-based park that includes
rides and waterfront restaurants, making it an immersive
zone of fun and entertainment for local Sharjan residents
and families.
JRA worked with the QDA on a new master plan for the
park. Current plans call for themed areas reflecting a
variety of ancient civilizations, including: Roman, Persian,
Ottoman and Arabian.
It is hoped that this redeveloped space will become the
region's most social downtown park, and will draw
approximately 300,000 visitors per year.
Al Kaheel
Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE)
Al Kaheel was envisioned as an educational theme park and working horse
farm dedicated to man’s relationship with the horse. JRA, hired by Al Kaheel
Park LLC as part of the project’s consultant team, provided attraction planning
and design for the complex.
Initial concepts included an interactive and multimedia horse museum,
along with daily attractions such as virtual reality rides, stunt shows, horse
presentations, hay rides, desert trekking and horse drawn carriage tours.
Jenkinson’s Fun House
Point Pleasant, New Jersey
The Fun House attraction at Jenkinson’s Beach and Amusement
Center is a tribute to the American and European carnival fun houses
of yesteryear.
All the old tricks, and quite a few new ones, are employed at the Fun
House to ensure an amusing visit. Mazes, foreshortened rooms, echo
chambers, rotating tunnels, trick mirrors, air blasts, sound effects,
calliope music, black lights and moving floors are just a few of the
classic fun house elements used effectively to create a disorienting,
laugh-filled journey. Fun-seekers are also miniaturized in the Toxic
Laboratory as well as treated to a barrage of sight gags and flatulent
noises in the one-and-only Butt Room.
JRA’s services included concept and detail design, floor plans,
elevations, story line development, material specifications,
operational data and fabrication coordination.
Heartsong
D o l l y w o o d T h e m e P a r k • P i g e o n F o r g e , Te n n e s s e e
Dollywood’s “Heartsong” attraction is a “multi-sensory, multi-dimensional theater
experience” that combines a 65mm film, a lush in-theater environment, animation, various
special effects, live performers, and an elaborate score featuring both old
favorites and a newly written song by Dolly Parton. “Heartsong” introduces the
audience to the most important influences on Dolly’s life and music: her home in the Smoky
Mountains, her family and friends, her faith and the values by which she lives.
Visitors “meet” Dolly on screen, share the memories of her childhood and young womanhood
and listen as she serenades them — all in a 325-seat theater that comes to life with blooming
flowers, butterflies and a thunderstorm.
JRA provided services including conceptual design; writing; film production; scoring; art
direction; scenic, lighting and special effects design; installation supervision and overall
project management.
Casino Pier
Seaside Heights, New Jersey
Casino Pier, the cherished oceanfront amusement
park whose boardwalk and pier were dismantled
by October 2012’s Hurricane Sandy, hired JRA
to provide master planning and programming
services for Phase I of a two-phase re-building
effort.
Originally opened in 1960, Casino Pier, located
in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, housed 38
rides, as well as a rooftop miniature golf course,
concession stands and boardwalk games. JRA
worked closely with the Casino Pier owners
on the overall master plan, which calls for the
boardwalk and pier to retain those rides that
were salvaged after the hurricane, including
the Disk’O ride, Skyscraper ride, Pirate’s
Hideaway coaster, Sky Ride chair lift and several
treasured kiddie rides. Casino Pier is using this
opportunity to upgrade its ride mix with new
family attractions and to refresh food, beverage
and retail outlets. Phase I, consisting of the
boardwalk and pier’s lower deck, opened in
May of 2013. The Phase II upper deck will open
in 2014.
Amazing Chicago
Navy Pier • Chicago, Illinois
Part fun house and part cultural journey, Amazing
Chicago invites guests to navigate a series of mirror
mazes and twisted tunnels set in a Chicago landscape.
JRA designed this family attraction, located on historic
Navy Pier.
Once inside Amazing Chicago, guests journey through
various infinity-maze corridors and colorful sets depicting
Chicago scenes. From dark underground tunnels to
stunning architectural landmarks, Amazing Chicago
takes visitors on a tour like no other.
Throughout the experience, special effects, music and
narration bring the sights and sounds of Chicago to life.
It is the city’s first full-sensory maze experience.
JRA enlisted the help of famed London-based maze

designing a breakthrough exhibit for an existing facility,
JRA has a proven record of creating environments and
experiences that truly connect with people.

South Carolina State Museum
Columbia, South Carolina
The renovated and expanded State Museum is the first museum of its kind to house,
under one roof, an onsite and online observatory and classroom, a 55-foot digital
planetarium dome and a 4D multisensory theater. The museum also features an outdoor
viewing terrace for its vintage 1926 Alvan Clark 12-3/8” refracting telescope, as well
as new gallery exhibit space for the Robert B. Ariail Collection of Historical Astronomy
telescopes and optics, considered the largest collection of historic American refracting
telescopes in the world.
The State Museum is one of the largest examples of an astronomy/STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) educational facility connected to an
interdisciplinary museum, and it will be the first organization in the nation to allow
students and teachers to remotely control a digitized vintage telescope for distance
education purposes.
JRA was retained by the State Museum as a thematic design consultant. JRA’s scope
of work included planning and conceptual design, interior and exterior environmental
graphics, concept and schematic design for the new retail store, materials and finishes
selection, and design input for much of the common areas, which included enhanced
guest services and meeting capabilities within the museum. The JRA-designed Main
Lobby showcases iconic South Carolina artifacts representing the museum’s four
disciplines: art, cultural history, natural history and science and technology and will
also feature permanent exhibits occupied by the Columbia Metropolitan Convention &
Visitors Bureau, South Carolina Educational Television and the South Carolina Parks,
Recreation and Tourism Department. The Cotton Mill Exchange museum store, one of the
cornerstones of the expansion project, embodies the essence of the old mill in which the
museum is housed, and features newly uncovered brick walls and windows dating back
to 1894.

The spirit of the Cincinnati Reds is bigger than life in
the Reds Team Shop, which greets visitors as they exit
the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and Museum
Baseball’s look and feel are everywhere in this space,
from the white porcelain floors inlaid with a red
stitching pattern to the 30-foot columns that replicate
Louisville Slugger bats right down to the wood grain.
But it is the success of the Cincinnati Reds that
forms the heart of the store. As visitors enter Great
American Ball Park, a colorful scale replica of the
Reds’ 1990 World Series trophy attracts them to the
store. Merchandise display is artfully woven into
the sculpture, along with reader rails that provide
information about the team’s five World Series
championships. Baseballs suspended overhead bear
the years of each of those championships with space
left for future World Series wins.
JRA worked hand-in-hand with Retail Design
Collaborative to provide complete planning and
design for the Reds Team Shop.
Cincinnati Reds Fan Zone
Great American Ball Park • Cincinnati, Ohio
Cincinnati Reds fans can step into a batter’s shoes,
wrap their fingers around a killer pitch and more at
the Great American Ball Park’s interactive plaza. This
zone is designed to get visitors into the action before,
after and even during the game.
Activities appeal to all ages and run the gamut from
low-tech to high-tech. Computerized interactives
provide a virtual environment for batting and pitching.
A vertical leap lets fans test their pop-fly catching
abilities. Visitors can time themselves as they run the
regulation 90 feet between bases, and they can try
out the grips used to execute a variety of pitches.
The littlest fans can mix and match their favorite Reds
players, putting a catcher’s head on a pitcher’s body.
JRA provided conceptual through detail design for the
Reds Fan Zone.
