IDS 14TH ANNUAL KIDS CLASSIC GOLF TOURNAMENT MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2008 HAVE YOU SIGNED UP ALREADY? 1 “BE IN THE KNOW: KEY ODDS AND ENDS” WELCOME BACK PARTY: Ask any of the 400 people who attended the Welcome Back Party on Friday, August 24, and they will say it was great, full of warmth, smiles, and people enjoying the opportunity to connect. Parents raved about the food that was catered by our very own Chef Garret Jagdmann. Roger Keplinger from Acoustic Music was splendid as always. PFA Hospitality Co-Chairs, Stacy Leeds and Linda Simonton, were so pleased with the turnout and everyone’s enjoyment of the evening. Thanks Stacy and Linda for planning a wonderful and very enjoyable gathering for our Board of Trustees, teachers, parents and once again, our terrific generous sponsor: ACADEMIC ALLIANCE IN DERMATOLOGY SUPPORTED BY ACADEMIC ALLIANCE FOR CLINICAL RESEARCH. BIG EVENT CANOE TRIP CREATES ANOTHER FABULOUS DAY: "Land Ho! IDS straight ahead!" Canoeing -- What a special way to start the school year at IDS! Dominic Bottini (K) and the Schultz family, Sofia (Cool Cat), Drew (PK4) and Nicholas (PK3), had the wonderful opportunity to canoe to school for the entire first week. Thanks to the generous donation of the Shannon family, the Bottini's and the Schultz' won the canoe rides at the auctions held at last year's IDS Golf tournament and at the Big Event. The children were thrilled as their daddies paddled them in every day and docked behind the library. This was also a relief to their mommies, who avoided the back-to-school traffic at drop off. Thank you IDS!!! SPC UPDATE: For the last six years, St. Petersburg College of Education (SPC) interns come to study at IDS before and during their internship to learn about IDS’s M.O.R.E. Approach to teaching and learning. This training facilitates their success as teachers. The training lasts for four days and is run like a boot camp for teachers with an executive flair added. It is part of our IDS mission “to have a positive impact on the greater community”. However, this impact has often annoyed many IDS parents because as SPC has grown so successfully in numbers, so has the number of attendees taking up parking spaces. So, the college has made some excellent adjustments, which include holding two of the four days 1:00 – 8:30 p.m. (September 2nd and 3rd) and two will be on September 4th and 5th from 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. to avoid traffic lines. We have also condensed information from six days to four days. We ask for your patience and your willingness to put on your “community service hat”. That means that they are asked to wait to come to our campus to allow for arrival, and they leave after our dismissal. If you are a parent that parks to pick up your child and you have a challenge to park as normal, please use the dismissal procedures used for pick-up in Corbett Hall or in the Middle School. Thanks for working with us to make this a “win-win” situation. All parents are invited to join in the training! M.O.R.E. BRINGS SPANISH EDUCATORS TO IDS: We are so pleased to welcome from Madrid, Spain: Mariá Cruz Fernández (Virgen de Europa School) and Javier Oca, and Almudena Solana (Liceo Sorolla School) to IDS to start off the school year. Their schools have already participated in the M.O.R.E. training. Our “Spanish explorers”are learning as much as possible to take back with them to their own very wonderful and prestigious private schools. They are also a big help to our teachers and enjoy our students. They return to Madrid to open their own schools on September 6 and September 13. BIG EVENT STREETS AND PARKING SPOTS: Look around the campus and you can see new street signs and walkways named after the generous donors to IDS who won these fun honors at the 2008 Big Event…CONGRATULATIONS TO: the “Mimi and Tee Coto Street”, the “Ahmad and Alexis Everett Way”, and the “Blake von Thaden Blvd.”! Also, please remember that the designated Big Event parking spots are reserved for the 2008 Big Event silent auction winners only!!! Their names are on the spots, and they earned them through the bidding process. The rest of the school is benefiting from their generous win!!! Thanks to all for parking in any other spot (except for handicap spots, of course.) 2 PFA NEWS BY PFA PRESIDENT, AMY BOTTINI WOW! We are having a great start to the school year. THE ASK: How can I help make a positive difference in my child’s school? THE ASK: How can I support the parent leadership in the school? THE ASK: How can I inspire others to join me? This volunteer booklet gives some very good answers to these “ASKS”. Participation in either a small or a large way is appreciated and valued at IDS-CC. The key is after “THE ASK”, COME AND DO! Connect with us knowing that the whole, equal to the sum of its parts, can even be greater when aligned with a worthy cause. The volunteer programs need you! We extend a very appreciative thanks to the 2007 – 2008 PFA leadership team for all you do and an advance display of gratitude to the entire community for what you are about to do.
