the shelf inside the newly renovated waiting room at Penney’s
North Country Car Care Center.
Memorabilia, some donated by
local residents, offer a nostalgic
backdrop against the modern
automotive technology at this St.
James service station, which was
founded in 1912 by former owners.
“This place has been here for
as long as I can remember,” says
John, a local St. James resident
and businessman, “and it was
tops with service then and it is
now.”
Brian Barton, a mechanic for
over 22 years, and his wife
Theresa took the service station
over two years ago. Penney’s,
which also houses a convenience store, offers emergency
assistance, state inspections, and
both foreign and domestic car
expertise including computer
diagnostics. The station is state
certified and the mechanics are
ASE certified. The station is
authorized to perform extended
warranty repairs and can also
provide towing.
“This place has been a St.
James landmark ever since I was
a kid,” says Brian. “I even
worked here then, pumping gas.
There is a certain pride that we
have toward Penney’s that
extends beyond our years here
as owners. That’s one of the reasons we make it our business to
go the extra mile to help our
customers. We provide pick up
and drop off service for customers. Our prices are very reaOUR TOWN • FEBRUARY 2007
sonable, including gas, and as a
family owned business we pride
ourselves in our honesty. The
reputation of Penney’s is important to us. We even make emergency road calls and if someone
has a flat or can’t start their car
at home – of course, we make
house calls.”

polishing pots of gold to get ready
for the annual celebration of the St.
James Chamber of Commerce’s
23rd St. Patrick’s Day Parade in St.
James, on Saturday, March 17 – St.
Patrick’s Day.
The St. James Chamber is proud
to announce the 2007 Grand
Marshalls, Princesses and Princes
for the Parade.
Kenneth J. and Elizabeth M.
Maher are the 2007 Grand
Marshalls; along with Princesses,
Kaitlyn Devlin and Morgan Shevlin,

Nominations for Princes and
Princesses are still being accepted.

Salon-A-Thon Held to Benefit
St. James Resident Mary Beth Bjertnes
Thirteen members of the staff
at Enchante Salon & Day Spa,
220-1 West Main St. in
Smithtown held a Salon-a-Thon
on Sunday, February 11, 2007,
from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. to benefit
lifelong St. James resident Mary
Beth Bjertnes.
Mary Beth, a wife and mother
of two, underwent surgery to
remove a benign brain tumor in
June 2006. The tumor was
caused by radiation she received
30 years earlier while in treatment for leukemia as a child. In
October her head began to swell
up with spinal fluid, which has
necessitated the need for a second surgery.
Mary Beth, a/k/a Mary Beth
Debus by her friends from her
1983 Smithtown High School
East class, is on leave from her
job as a lunch monitor in the
Smithtown School District. With
the loss of income and the additional costs associated with the
surgery Mary Beth was “just overwhelmed” by the Salon-a-Thon
organized by Christine Reinhart
Fitzpatrick, an Enchante hairsylist
and family member.
The Salon was totally booked
for the event, and with the special
reduced prices for the benefit,
everyone was happy. Many businesses wanted to help out and
donated a myriad of items that
were raffled off including a 42”
Plasma TV by an anonymous
donor.
Services offered for the benefit
included cuts, manicures, facials,
lip & eyebrow waxing and Reiki
healing. The staff at Enchante
donated their time and the salon
donated all the materials.

Dustin Manwiller... Fighting For His Life

Twenty-three year-old Dustin
Manwiller has been in a coma
since a near-fatal Thanksgiving
morning car crash fractured the
base of his skull and caused a
multitude of other injuries.
After many dark days, there are
now some positive signs that
Dustin, a 2001 graduate of
Commack High School, may
finally emerge from his coma. On
Monday, February 5, he was
transferred from Stony Brook
University Hospital to Helen
Hayes
Hospital
in
West
Haverstraw, New York, which
specializes in treating traumatic
brain injuries and has a specialized coma stimulation program.
“He’s had several really good
days in a row. He held his head
up when the physical therapist
came and opened his eyes, but
he doesn’t look at you,” said his
dad, Ken Manwiller, a photographer who owns Laurie Studios,
formerly of St. James and now in
Centereach. Getting Dustin medically stable enough to be transferred to Helen Hayes Hospital
and getting the insurance company to OK the rehab hospital was
a huge hurdle, he said. At Helen
Hayes, his son will get three
hours of therapy a day.

driving home from
a friend’s house at
3:30 a.m. Thanksgiving
morning
when, just four
blocks from his Centereach
home, he lost control of his
Hyundai Tiburon on wet roads
and crashed into a utility pole.
“He was coming home to get
some sleep before getting up to
help his mom make Thanksgiving
dinner,” said Mr. Manwiller. “He
had made creme brulée and was
making other things. There were
22 or 23 people who were supposed to be here for Thanksgiving.”
Dustin suffered a fracture to the
base of his skull, multiple facial
fractures, a broken clavicle and
scapula, two collapsed lungs,
torn ligaments in the left knee,

and a deep laceration in his
right calf. In addition, “he has
broken bones in both ears and
his right eye has some damage to his optic nerve,” said Mr.
Manwiller, adding that it is not
yet known if Dustin can hear or
how badly his eyesight has been
impacted.
The 75 days since the accident
“have been a roller-coaster ride.
Every time we thought he was
getting stable, something else
would crop up,” said Mr.
Manwiller, who credits the surgical ICU and medical ICU teams
at Stony Brook University Hospital with saving his son’s life. “The
nurses and doctors are absolutely
fantastic,” he said. “They not
only care for the patient, they

care for the families. There’s also
a social worker named Tracy
Haubrich who I think is ready for
sainthood.”
Controlling Dustin’s fever and
heart rate had proven to be a particularly tough challenge, but the
hospital’s medical staff always
went the extra mile to win that
battle, he said.
Four weeks after his accident,
Dustin was transferred to St.
Johnland Nursing Center in Kings
Park, which has a coma stimulation program. But when his fever
almost immediately spiked up to
107 degrees and his blood pressure dropped, he was rushed
back to the Stony Brook
University Hospital Emergency
Room. “They had to raise his
blood pressure and, to do that,
they had to raise his heart rate.
But his heart rate went up to
about 165 beats a minute, and
there was a good chance that his
heart wouldn’t make it. It took
eight hours before his heart rate
started coming down and he was
out of immediate danger,” said
Mr. Manwiller, noting that, for
Dustin’s loved ones, this ordeal
might even have been more traumatic than the initial accident.
There were other setbacks along
the way, but none as dangerous
as that one.
Now that Dustin has recovered
from his other injuries and is
medically stable, Mr. Manwiller,
his wife Kathie, and daughters
Liz, 37, and Corryn, 24, are
hopeful that the staff at Helen
Hayes will be successful in helping him regain consciousness.
Once they do, “he will have a lot
of needs that we don't even know
about yet,” said Mr. Manwiller.
To help Dustin with any future
needs, and help facilitate his
recovery so he can go on to continue his culinary studies and
realize his dream of owning a
sports bar with very good food,
the Testaverde Fund for Spinal
Cord Injury, Inc. is sponsoring a
“Dustin’s Dream” fundraiser,
Sunday, March 11 at 3 p.m. at
Mulcahy’s Pub and Music Hall,
3232 Railroad Avenue, Wantagh.

Contest – “This store has the
best....” – which will be held in
conjunction with their Youth Art
Showcase 2007 exhibit at the
Mills Pond House Gallery, 660
Route 25A in St. James.
STAC invites all Suffolk County
youth to design posters for Suffolk
County businesses. Students may
choose any business within their
community to highlight the quality of goods and services they
appreciate. Choose your family’s
favorite pizza place, insurance
company, deli, hair salon, etc.
and use your creativity to tell others why they should go there too.
STAC will laminate posters to be
displayed in the businesses illustrated, in the gallery and on their
website www.stacarts.org.
The contest is open to any student in grades K-12, who is a
Suffolk County resident. Any
poster displaying negative messages will not be displayed or
included in the contest.
All work must be original, no
copies. Posters may be created in
marker, crayon, colored pencil,
paint, or any other medium that
dries flat. Poster size must be 18
inches by 24 inches and must
include the establishment’s
name, address and phone number.

A Woman’s Hands Exhibit
Council is pleased to announce
an exhibition and sale in celebration of Women’s History Month
beginning Saturday, February 24.
Public audiences are invited to
attend the Opening Reception
from 2-4 p.m., which will feature
the musical talents of Smithtown
High School East pianists Lucas
and Alexander Spangher. In addition to piano, Lucas and
Alexander are also accomplished
cello and bass players. Both were
selected to play at Saratoga this
response of artists to this exhibition demonstrates the timeliness
of an exhibition that deals with
women and their pursuits.

a few sheckles in the bank?
• Make a list of what’s needed
to create your perfect home
using existing spaces before
thinking expansion.
• Bring in a designer or architect, if needed, to concretize
your goals and do a feasibility
study.

At the January Home and
Garden Show in Farmingdale a
few weeks ago, I realized once
again how many Long Island
homeowners are renovating. Our
Home Decorating Club booth
was swamped with folks asking
advice on extensions, floor plans
in hand, wanting to make the
home of their dreams out of the
house in which they live.
Perhaps it’s because the slowing
housing market has convinced
folks to stay and fix what they
have rather than buy anew, or
perhaps people are beginning to
realize that investing in their
homes is always a good thing,
whatever the vicissitudes of the
real estate market.
In my seminars and workshops, I often stress “maintenance” as critical to insure that
you’re not hit all at once with
repairs that need to be done.
From a new roof to a kitchen or
bath, it’s a lot easier on your
budget, and life, to “fix what’s
broken” as it arises. It’s clearly a
mistake to wait for multiple projects that may each cost thousands to pile up. If you maintain
your home, it will keep its value
• Get a “ballpark” figure for
costs to determine if renovation or decoration is the proper solution, based on age and
location of house.
• Interview general contractors,
get references, and visit some
of their client’s homes.
• Make sure all contracts spell
out exactly what you are getting, no assumptions. Whatever is not in the contract is not
going to be included.
• Make decisions in a timely
fashion so the contractor won’t
be held up and tempted to
leave your job for another.
• Make sure you make careful
and prudent selections on permanent improvements. They’re
there for the long haul and difficult to change. Wait, if need
be, on replaceable furnishings.
• Most of all, expect some delay
in completion, and plan for
them.
The process may not be easy,
but it’s worth it. Your home, the
way you like it, will give you
years of enjoyment and provide
a positive living environment for
you and your family
• Create a budget spread sheet
and explore appropriate ways
for financing, giving yourself
leeway for extras and overages.
• Establish a realistic time frame
for the project including time
for drawings, filing and permits, etc., as well as the construction/decoration phase.
• Make provisions for where you
will stay while your house is
under siege, ie: trailer (fun for
about two weeks), renting a
nearby house, your mother-inlaws (fun for about
),
or the basement, with a
microwave, hot plate and
bunk beds.
• Leave enough time to plan the
project properly and schedule
for spring, summer or early fall
so you won’t experience
delays related to weather.

exempt us from paying capital
gains on our house we bought 33

both of us, but that still means we
have to pay on the additional
$400,000 of increased value. We
have a summer house out East
and want to move into it when I

A: Dear Confused,
Yes, effective January 1, 2007 the
New York Department of State
which oversees most licensed
professions in New York, and
therefore real estate, administrates this law passed by the legislative branch. A homeowner
hires a real estate agent and their
firm to represent them. At the
same time the homeowner makes
a decision how they want to work
with cooperating agents from
other firms. The choices are as
Sellers Agents or Brokers Agents.
(Simplistic distinction between
the two types is Broker Agency
removes a level of liability for the
homeowner from actions of the
cooperating broker). So, when
your agent was showing you
houses, she had to disclose to
you how she was representing the
homeowner in each case, and the
only way to prove that she did
disclose is to have it in writing
and signed, which is what the
law requires. (When an agent
represents the buyer, that agent’s
fiduciary responsibility is to the
buyer, which also has to be disclosed and signed.) The law goes
on for varied scenarios. As with
all new things, it is confusing at
first. Under the new law all parties will have a better understanding of how they are represented
right from the beginning. Happy
house hunting, it is a great market
to make a purchase.

It’s Time to Get Your Garden Ready for Spring

It is almost March, daylight
savings time begins, there is St.
Patrick’s Day and wonderful
spring happens on the 21st. It is
the month of green.
Start your heat-loving vegetable and flower seeds now. If
the soil is not too wet, you can
plant some garden peas on the
17th, the sweetest ones are said
to be those planted on St.
Patrick’s Day.
Poke around in your garden
beds to see what is coming up. As
bulbs and perennials emerge,
gently rake back the winter
mulch you applied. Remove it as
you see new growth appear.
Nightly temperatures should
remain above freezing before you
remove the mulch completely.
We cannot do planting outside,
q
but you can plan out the garden.
A kitchen garden just outside the
kitchen door is good. If there is
not a space, you can always construct a raised bed or plant in
containers. Tomatoes, peppers,
lettuce, and herbs including edible flowers are a nice mix.
How about a tepee of sunflowers (which the children will love)
or a wall of pole beans, liven up
your front walk with a row of
beautiful eggplants, or cover your
plain fence with colorful morning
glories.
You should get your soil ready
for planting. Here are some ways
to have healthy, chemical-free
soil. Get used to the fact that
there will be bugs in the garden.
It is where they live. But in a
healthy garden the good bugs can
help to keep the bad bugs at bay.
In the meantime, plant a few
extra plants for the bugs.
Begin to compost. It is one of
the very best ingredients for your
garden soil. Until you can make
enough of your own, buy some
labeled “100% organic.”
Enrich your soil with the compost, some manure and some
peat moss. Add some rock powders in too, such as rock phosphate, green sand and Azomite.
These are all available at garden
centers. Till all these materials
into the soil.
Pick the right type of plants.
Read labels, do some homework.
If a plant is not right for your area
or not good for your gardening
expertise, move on to another
type.

Make sure to mulch. Use
shredded bark, chips or leaves, or
other organic debris such as hay
or untreated grass clippings. The
mulch helps to keep moisture in,
keeps weeds away and further
enriches the soil as it breaks
down.
Once your soil is established,
you should not need any additional fertilizer other than the
springtime top dressing of compost.
Aeration is essential for healthy
soil. Healthy soil is 25% air. Try
not to step or stand on your planting area, this compacts the soil
further. Just use a garden fork to
make holes in the soil, eight inches deep. Lawns and annuals such
as vegetables which do not have
deep, extensive root systems will
especially benefit from aeration.
Use natural pest control.
Companion planting, where one
plant benefits another is also
helpful. Encourage or buy beneficial insects for your garden. Lady
bugs and praying mantis are two
good ones. Don’t be too eager to
kill off bugs until you understand
what they are and what they do.
Try and rotate your edible
crops. Each plant takes different
nutrients from the soil. Give the
soil a season to replenish itself.
Winter cover crops can help also.
Keep weeds at bay. They steal
water and nutrients from your
plants. It is a easier, of course, to
remove them when they are
small, and do your weeding after
a good rain.
Water your garden consistently, not too much, not too little.
Soaker hoses or drip systems are
better than sprinklers. Water on
the leaves can encourage fungus
and a lot of water is also wasted
through evaporation.
Plant a variety of tress, shrubs,
vegetables and flowers. Leave a
section of your property ‘wild,’
leave a brush pile for wildlife to
hide in. Create an environment to
draw beneficial insects, birds and

other animals. Create your own
wildlife habitat. We do have to
allshare this beautiful planet.

Should Changes at
“The Fed”
Affect How You Invest?

It’s been a long time since someone other than
Alan Greenspan has served as chairman of the
Federal Reserve Board of Governors. In fact,
Greenspan has been at his current job since 1987.
But in a few weeks, we’ll see a “changing of the
guard” as Ben Bernanke takes the helm at the Fed.
This is big news for economists and policymakers,
but what about individual investors? How will you
be affected by the emergence of a new Fed chairman?
Before you can answer that question, you need to
be somewhat familiar with what the Federal
Reserve does, particularly its ability to contract or
expand the money supply. For example, if the
Federal Reserve feels that inflation is heating up, it
may raise the federal funds rate, a key short-term
interest rate. This causes borrowing to become
more expensive, so consumers are more likely to
save money, instead of spending it. In theory, this
reduction in demand will lead to less upward pressure on prices, thereby bringing inflation under
control. And lately, inflationary fears have been on
the minds of the Federal Reserve’s governors,
because the Fed has raised the federal funds rate 12
times from June 2004 through November 2005.
Of course, Alan Greenspan could not take these
actions by himself; he needed to get agreement
from the other Federal Reserve governors. And the
same will be true with Ben Bernanke. Nonetheless,
the Federal Reserve chairman does wield considerable power; when testifying before Congress,
Greenspan’s mere words had the power to move
markets.
Still, as an investor, you probably shouldn’t place
undue emphasis on what the Federal Reserve chairman says, or what actions the Fed takes. You need
to look beyond short-term events and make moves
that can help you in the long run. Here are two
ideas to consider:
• Consistently diversify your holdings. When the
Federal Reserve raises interest rates, some industries, such as housing and construction, may be
adversely affected, while others, such as healthcare and energy, may actually benefit. But you’d
find it almost impossible– and quite costly – to
constantly juggle your portfolio in response to rising or falling interest rates. Consequently, you’ll
be much better off by building a diversified portfolio containing many different types of stocks,
along with other investments, such as bonds and

Buying Your First Home

If you are currently renting a
home or apartment and have said
to yourself, “I am throwing my
money away every month for rent
and have nothing to show for it,”
you are right; and today, with the
incredible availability of financing options for first time buyers,
there is more reason than ever to
take that step to becoming a
homeowner.
The greatest challenge to first
time homebuyers has always
been the down payment.
Changes in recent years that
include the availability of low
and “no down payment” programs have removed that obstacle. Buyers with reasonable credit histories can obtain “100%
financing” with income checks,
and sometimes without, if
employment has been stable.
Maybe you think that financing
100% of a purchase will cause
payments to be too large to handle. Consider this – a monthly
payment for a 100% $400,000
mortgage would run today
approximately $3,300 per month
with $6,000 in property taxes. If
your income taxes represent 30%
of your income, your annual
income tax savings would be
over $10,000 per year. That is
because all of the mortgage interest (approximately $28,000) and

are tax deductible. That $10,000
savings is $833.33 per month,
making the $3,300 per month
less than $2,500 per month – not
an uncommon monthly rental

among retirees that they no
longer need the same life insurance coverage they had while
they were working. Many surrender or reduce their insurance

the mortgage is paid off, the kids
are grown, and college tuition

Is It Too Late to Apply to College?

If you are one of the many seniors who have decided to put the
whole college search off until
after the holidays, guess what?
The time has come. Although you
may have closed yourself off to
some of the more selective
schools, let’s face it, those deadlines have come and gone, but
there are still many options out
there for you.
If you are serious about
becoming a college freshman this
fall, there is no more time to
waste. At this point, you have
two options: 1) colleges and universities that work under a rolling
admissions policy; 2) your local
community college.
Schools that follow a rolling
admissions policy generally do
not have a formal or official dead-
line. These schools process applications as they are received and
make decisions accordingly.
Although applications may be
accepted later than schools with
official deadlines, there is still a
chance that programs may close,
classes may fill, and housing may
no longer be available.
A fast way to find colleges that
work under rolling admissions is
through the internet. For example, The Princeton Review web
site offers a list of approximately
200 schools that follow this policy. Local schools such as Long
Island University – CW Post and
St. John’s University are just two
of many rolling-admissions
schools in the tri-state area.
There are also numerous schools
outside of the metropolitan area.
For more detailed admissions
information, you should always

Maintaining Blood Sugar Levels
Maintaining healthy, normal blood
sugars is important to your overall
health because of the negative impact
that high blood sugar levels can cause
on the body. It is important to maintain
a healthy blood sugar level. Your
blood sugar level is determined by
how much carbohydrate you eat, how
rapidly your body breaks carbohydrates down into simple sugars and
absorbs these sugars into the bloodstream and finally, by how rapidly your
cells uptake the sugar from the blood.
HOW TO MAINTAIN
BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS
1) Consume Good Carbohydrates.
Carbohydrates are the body’s preferred source of energy. We need carbohydrates because they provide us
with energy, fiber and select nutrients
that are only available from these
foods. Carbohydrates are broken down
in the intestines to their counterparts,
glucose, fructose and galactose. Once
broken down, they are absorbed
through the intestinal wall into the
bloodstream. The rate at which these
digested sugars are absorbed into the
bloodstream is what determines the
rate at which and how your blood
sugar levels rise.
Not all carbohydrates are created
equal. There are good carbohydrates
and there are carbohydrates that
should only be consumed in moderation. Good carbohydrates include
fruits, vegetables and whole grain
foods because they are loaded with
vitamins, minerals, fiber and phytochemivals which all promote optimal
health. Carbohydrates that should be
limited include foods high in simple
sugars and low in fiber and nutrients,
such as sweets, chips, crackers and
other processed foods.
Overall there are two types of carbohydrates: simple and complex.
Simple carbohydrates are absorbed
very easily from the intestine into the
bloodstream and as a result, have the
most rapid effect on blood sugar levels. Foods containing simple carbohydrates include processed items such
as cookies, candies, and chips. Fruits
contain natural simple and complex
carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates, which include fiber and starches, take longer to break down in the
intestine and thus are absorbed into
the bloodstream at a slower rate.
Foods containing complex carbs
include vegetables, whole grains and
beans. The majority of carbohydrate
calories that you consume should
come from complex carbohydrates.
3) Exercise Regularly
Exercise is an excellent tool to help
maintain healthy blood sugar levels
because, similar to insulin, it activates
the cells to absorb sugar from the
blood. The cells use the sugar they
absorb to provide energy, while exercising promotes better blood sugar use
and control.
2) Include Fiber in Your Diet
Fiber is a plant material that is
largely resistant to the body’s digestive
enzymes, so much of it moves through
the intestines and is broken down by
the intestinal flora or bacteria in the
colon or excreted from the body. A

Emmy Award Winning Writer, Film Maker and Author,
Speaks at The Knox School
Emmy Award winning writer,
film maker and author Dennis
Watlington recently addressed the
students at The Knox School in St.
James at an all-school assembly
in honor of Martin Luther King
Day.
Watlington, who has written
for Vanity Fair, the New York
Times, and American Way, spoke
to the school about the opportunities given to him at an early age
when he was selected to be a part
of a neighborhood boys club program that groomed ghetto children to receive scholarships to
exclusive private schools. He
went on to attend the Hotchkiss
School and later attended New
York University.
Watlington spoke on how his
life has been riddled with bouts of
drug addiction, when during the
early eighties, he succumbed to
crack. After several months, he
entered rehab and later took
advantage of the opportunity to
chronicle his traumatic tale in
“Between the Cracks” for Vanity
Fair magazine. HBO picked up
the article and Watlington was
hired to write the screenplay for
the company.
He spoke on how Martin
Luther King would be proud to

Antonio Miranda, a 7th grade student at Knox, said “It was exciting
to meet someone who came from

have to do. It was special to me
and it gave me more incentive to
keep working hard.”
Mr. Watlington stayed for
lunch with several students after
the assembly. Kelvin Kong, the
10th grade class president, noted,
“He was a really positive guy. He
has experienced many negative
things but has managed to maintain his positive outlook. I admire
that.”

book signing of his autobiography

at 7 p.m.

HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS AT SP&J SCHOOL... Santa Claus visited
the 3-day Nursery class at Sts. Philip and James School in St.
James. Each child got to sit on Santa's lap and tell him their
wishes. The children celebrated with a nativity performance and
refreshments. The class also recognized the season by decorating
their Christmas tree with new mittens and gloves which were
later donated to needy Long Island children.

Cold Weather Can Mean Frostbite

Winter sports enthusiasts participate in a variety of activities,
such as downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, camping, ice fishing, ice
skating and snowmobiling – even
just frolicking in the yard with
family and friends. Most people
who are spending a great deal of
time outdoors are adequately
dressed and stay in properly
marked areas. Even so, a pleasant
day outside in the cold and snow,
or getting trapped unexpectedly
by bad weather, can lead to frostbite.
Frostbite affects areas of the
body that are exposed to the
cold, such as cheeks, nose, ears,
fingers and toes. Frostbite has
three stages of progression:
wear warm layers, keep dry, consume liquids and carbohydrates
and seek shelter and warmth at
the first sign of numbness. A little
advance preparation will help
make all those winter activities
safer and more fun.

Treating Headaches with Physical Therapy

If you are reluctant to take
medication for your headaches
you may be interested in learning
about causes of headaches that
may be far-removed from your
head and neck. The sketch
shown was developed from years
of clinical experience treating
headaches due to a variety of
musculoskeletal problems. In
fact, headaches may be relieved
by treating injuries of the head,
the toes and many places inbetween.
Headaches are often caused by
increased muscle tension. This
tension is due to overloading
neck and head muscles as the
body tries to compensate for poor
posture, stress, or something else.
That something else may be loss
of function of muscles and joints
below the neck perhaps due to an
injury or disease such as arthritis.
Here’s what happens: with a loss
in function, your body is working
really hard at keeping you working or playing. At some point,
your body runs out of options and
reports headache pain: an alarm
that says do something. Over-thecounter pain medication may
relieve symptoms in the shortterm. However, your body will
continue to signal pain until you
do something to prevent the
headache such as change your
posture or decrease your stress.

cessful, pain speaks up and urges
you to seek professional help.
Why didn’t anyone ever refer
me to physical therapy for my
headaches? It takes a thorough
search of the muscles and joints
of the body to find old problems
that may be contributing to
headaches. The gatekeepers of
physical therapy, medical doctors, are not as experienced as
physical therapists at palpating
and discovering musculoskeletal
compensations and old injuries.
As a patient, you may open the
discussion with your physician on
the potential benefits of physical
therapy for your headaches.
To be effective, physical thera-
py intervention for headaches
requires the combination of a
skilled physical therapist and a
compliant patient. A skilled therapist will determine the cause of
your headaches and use handson skills, postural education,
exercise, etc., to restore tissue to
its original function. A compliant
patient will be committed to correcting postures, performing specific exercises and minimizing
stress in their life.
Return to the illustration and

includes treatment to other parts
of your body in addition to your
head or neck. Consult your physician and locate a skilled physical

Hair is composed of strong
structural protein called keratin.
This is the same kind of protein
that makes up the nails and the
outer layer of skin. Hair is actually dead (non-living) material
when it leaves the scalp. This
concept is one of the reasons
why, in the past, people abused
their hair with chemicals and did
not take proper precautions or
informed aftercare.
What I know as a professional
is that living or non-living things
are exposed to different conditions, temperatures, chemicals
and elements that affect and
change its condition or performance. That’s why you are responsible for how your hair, nails,
skin, body, and eyes look right
now.
Any cell or structure from your
body can tell a lot about you –
similar to the way trees tell their
age. Another example is ice. Ice
can tell the amount of carbon
dioxide, nitrogen or oxygen in the
past centuries or millenniums.
The police and FBI use hair, nails
and skin as evidence to solve
crimes, because, believe or not,
whatever you do, your body is
going to have a chemical record
of it. Hair can tell who you are,
how you live and what you go
through.
Below the surface of the skin is
the hair root, which is enclosed
within a hair follicle. At the base
of the hair follicle is the dermal
papilla. The dermal papilla is fed
by the bloodstream, which carries nourishment to produce new
hairs. Blood carries everything

Use good products: Using
products with high amounts of
alcohol can damage and dry your
hair. I recommend using shampoo, moisturizing and styling
products rich in proteins and vitamins. When you use moisturizer,
apply it just on the ends for a
good 5-10 minutes. Don’t ever
leave conditioner in your hair
unless it is leave-in conditioner.
When you do that, you are closing the cuticle and the hair cannot breathe, causing breakage.
Use cold water for final rinse:
Hot water opens the cuticle and
prevents the hair from being silky
and shiny. After you get a chemical process or just get your hair
done, request a one minute cool
rinse.
Do not use too much heat:
Now that you know heat opens
the cuticle, try to blow dry/flat
iron/curling iron your hair less.
Do not overheat/overdo one section of your hair because you will
provoke breakage. Attention
blondes: Be careful, your hair
does not have as much protein
and structure in it as nonblondes. This is one of the main
reasons why your hair is sensitive
to everything if you overdo it.
Attention color and perm
clients: When you do a chemical
service like highlights or perm,
the hair will take a minimum of
two weeks to get back in shape,
depending how much you have
done with your hair. Make sure
you use good treatments twice a
week to prevent dryness, frizz
and changes in the texture of your
hair.

PARKINSON PHYSICAL
THERAPY PROGRAM
A physical therapy program is
available to Parkinson patients at
the Smithtown Parkinson Therapy
Center. The Center conducts an
on-going program of exercise and
physical therapy, specifically tailored to the needs of each individual patient and administered by a
volunteer staff doctor, a physical
therapist, nurses and trained volunteer aids. The Center operates on
a not-for-profit basis with only a
minimal monthly charge to cover

RECOVERY MEETINGS
Recovery, Inc., a nonprofit community mental health organization,
