The nearly 13,000 acres of clear waters, and 130 miles of scenic shoreline with rocky banks and rock bluffs above and below the water provide the environment for the greatest variety of water sports activities and recreational entertainment. The beautiful, clear waters of Lake Tenkiller are perfect for all types of boating activities. Colorful sails grace the horizon on any given day as sailing enthusiasts discover the deep water and whispering breezes. Secluded coves provide shelter from powerboat wakes and prevailing winds and are popular anchoring spots. The lake has 10 marinas and 20 parks managed by the State of Oklahoma or the Corps of Engineers with all levels of campsite facilities available. There are 24 boat launching ramps around the lake, and rental boats of all kinds are available at most marinas. Visitors can find excellent lodging and dining at the many resorts, motels and restaurants around the lake. For dining pleasure, there are floating restaurants, as well as a variety of excellent landbased restaurants — all happy to serve the casually dressed. There are paved roadways surrounding the lake and into each of the recreational access points, as well as a county airport. Lake Tenkiller weaves 34 miles through the wild and rolling hills of Cherokee County. The lake was created in the Illinois River basin by the Tulsa District Army Corps of Engineers. Tenkiller is a proud example of how man and nature can combine their talents and beauty to produce a thing of lasting quality for this generation and generations to come. Above Photo by Jeannie Thompson, Photo at right by Jean Bowman Lake Tenkiller is known for colorful sunsets and a laid-back lifestyle. It’s a place where televisions, gaming systems and telephones take a back seat to family time and casual conversations. Page 14 www.laketenkiller.com Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge is located two miles south of Vian, and is the winter home for nearly 1 million migratory geese and the bald eagle. Cookson Game Refuge is located five miles east of Cookson. The refuge is open to drive-through traffic during August and December. Access by foot, horse or mountain bike is permitted Jan. 1 - Aug.31. Tenkiller State Park Nature Center is open seven days a week during summer. A short nature trail follows a rock bluff by the lake. Guided tours are available. Standing Rock Nature Trail (about 1-1/4 miles) is made up of two loops, each with two segments of shorter trails — Big Pine and Three Sisters on the first loop, and Big Cedar and Hi-Knob on the second. The Buzzard Roost Trail at Cato Creek Landing (1-1/2 miles) winds along a circular path beside a creek. The Overlook Nature Trail is located at the Tenkiller Dam Overlook. The first segment of the trail (1-1/4 miles) winds through the woods from the Overlook to Highway 10A (near the Methodist Boys Ranch). The second segment of the trail continues on from Highway 10A and ends at Strayhorn Public Use Area. Fishing Fun Fishing Tenkiller is year-round activity Fishing and wildlife resources at Lake Tenkiller provide a wide variety of outdoor recreation opportunities. Yearround fishing is good with black bass, white bass, striped bass, crappie, catfish, bream and walleye, with rainbow and brown trout stocked in the Illinois River below the dam. The trout fishery on the river attracts many visitors, as does the Illinois River north of the lake, which attracts canoeists and rafters. There are two heated fishing docks for wintertime fishing. Heated docks are at Burnt Cabin Marina and Caney Ridge Marina. Lake Tenkiller is a popular lake for fishing tournaments. Striped bass are also common in the Lower Illinois River with several state record fish coming from its waters. The current striped bass state record was caught in July 1996 by Louis Parker of Gore. Crappie Crappie fishing is usually best in the spring as the fish prepare for spawning. Look for small, pea gravel type banks and shallow willow trees. During the hot summer months, crappie can be found in deep water — about 25 to 40 feet deep. In the Fall, crappie move back to the shallow waters and can be found around submerged brush. Crappie can be caught from one of the heated fishing docks around the lake in the wintertime. White & Striped Bass White bass, or sand bass (sandies), provide excellent fishing opportunities in the spring as they head for the upper Illinois River to spawn. From Carter’s Landing to Horseshoe Bend is an excellent area to catch the spring run. During the summer months, the sandies begin to school. Areas near Cookson, Chicken Creek and Snake Creek are good choices. Striped bass are caught below Tenkiller Dam in the Lower Illinois River and Arkansas River near Gore and Marval Resort. Striper fishing is tremendous year around with the lower Illinois River producing the state record 47pound 8-ounce striper. Large & Smallmouth Bass During the summer months, largemouth bass move to deeper water. Night fishing is popular due to the heavy day use on the lake. Smallmouth bass provide some scrappy fighting in the summer. Most successful areas to catch smallmouth bass are in the Upper Illinois River and Baron Fork Creek. Largemouth bass return to the shallows as water temperatures start to cool down in the Fall. In the wintertime, largemouth bass seek deep water. Catfish Catfishing really picks up in the summer months. Fishing the deep water near mud flats around Pettit Bay, Standing Rock and Carter’s Landing are excellent choices. In the Fall, catfishing is good in 10 to 20 feet of water. Trout Rainbow and brown trout are stocked in the Illinois River below the dam. Trout are stocked in the river normally every Thursday afternoon in the spring beginning in March. In the summer months, they are stocked three or four times per month. In the wintertime, they are normally stocked every other week. The Oklahoma Wildlife Department has the exact schedule. www.laketenkiller.com Page 15 Relocation/Retirement Lake Tenkiller is the ideal place to relocate The Tenkiller area is one of the most beautiful and unscathed spots in this region of the country. Numerous real estate agencies, mortgage companies, banks and title companies can assist you with all of your home or business buying needs. Several land developers in the area are helpful in aiding you to find your dream lake lot or acreage to build on. With more than 130 miles to cover, your little slice of heaven is waiting. The area is conveniently located Photo by Ron Day Lake Tenkiller is well-known for its wide variety of fish, including crappie, bass, catfish and trout. Because of heavy rain, only two delegates arrived. According to the legend, the decision to settle on the present site came from the phrase Tah-le-yaquah, meaning two is enough to decide. In 1843, the Cherokee 1852 - First incorporated city in Oklahoma National Council designated 160 acres surrounding the capitol site as the township of Tahlequah. The Cherokee syllabary on street signs and storefronts serves as a tangible link to the city’s roots. Today Tahlequah is the capital of the Cherokee Nation and the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians. 1843 - First city in Oklahoma to have a surveyed and platted main street No trip to Tahlequah would be complete without a trip down the scenic Illinois River in a canoe, raft or kayak. Anglers enjoy fishing for 70 different species of fish. The Illinois River cuts through the Cookson Hills to form beautiful Lake Tenkiller which has the state’s only Scuba park. We hope you experience Tahlequah’s unique blend of recreational, cultural, historic, and educational opportunities and see why our visitors become our friends. Photo by Lesa Cordle Tahlequah’s trees offer an array of color most of the year, from the delicate Redbud and Dogwood blossoms in the spring to the scarlet maple leaves in the fall. - This publication is produced in cooperation with the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department, and 80,000 copies were printed at a cost of $0.34 each. Page 30 www.laketenkiller.com Red Fern Festival Red Fern Festival honors Tahlequah’s role in ‘Where the Red Fern Grows’ The novel “Where the Red Fern Grows” is the basis for Tahlequah’s Red Fern Festival, held the last weekend of April each year. The legend of the red fern tells of two Native American children who become lost in a blizzard, and die before they can find their way home. In the spring their bodies are found, a red fern growing between them. The legend says that only an angel can plant the seed from which the red fern grows, and that the plant will never die. Now, to many, the legend of the red fern evokes heartfelt memories. People are curious about the area that inspired the story, and in the hound dogs and raccoons. Visitors want to connect the mystical place in their minds the story took them to the physical place the story is set. All of this gave rise to the Red Fern Festival. The Red Fern Festival includes hound dog field trials, a barbeque and chili cook-off, live music, the ever-popular crawdad hole, old-fashioned children’s games, a car show, a fern sale, handcrafted arts and crafts, more hounds, raccoons, and a lovely festival that is evocative a simpler time. “Where the Red Fern Grows,” was written by Tahlequah-area native Wilson Rawls. Cookson was located on the shore of the Illinois River, near the Cookson Bluff area. One of the first buildings in the area was the Ballew Brothers’ Store. They supplied local residents with everything from food to guns and tools. Some years later, the Stratton family took over operation of the store, which by then was also the local post office. The first floor of the building housed the store and post office. The store was a popular gathering place for the community, and served as a place to vote during elections. In 1947, the Corps of Engineers began construction on the Tenkiller Dam. Several of the structures from the town were moved to higher ground. Among these were the old store and Photo by Nancy Tharp The Keys and Cookson communities have a wide variety of businesses that cater to Lake Tenkiller traffic. several small cabins, which were relocated to their present location on Highway 82 in Cookson. The store is still a popular gathering place. Several structures from the old town could not be moved and were left behind at the bottom of the lake. They now are a popular underwater destinations for scuba divers. Keys The Keys community is located south of Tahlequah at the junction of Oklahoma State Highway 82, which traverses the east side of the lake, and Indian Road, which traverses the west side. Because of its location as a gateway to both sides of Lake Tenkiller, Keys is a focal point for a variety of businesses, including convenience stores, banks, restaurants, hair/nail salons, real estate agencies, churches, a donut shop, boat repair shop, auto repair shop, hotel, agriculture and feed store and the world-famous Jimmy Houston’s Outdoor Store. No one is sure where the name Vian came from, but one popular version is that the town was named after an early settler, George Vi. The second syllable, ‘an’ was added making it Vian, which in the Cherokee language means “garfish.” Located nine miles south of Lake Tenkiller on Oklahoma State Highway 82 and just off of Interstate-40, Vian is a quiet, friendly, familyoriented community. Several renovated buildings, many of which have been painted Page 46 www.laketenkiller.com with historical murals, provide unique shopping and dining opportunities, including antiques and hand-made quilts. The city park, along the railroad tracks, hosts a weekly farmer’s market on Saturdays during the summer months, with a wide variety of locallygrown produce and homemade products available. Vian City Lake, just north of town, offers fishing and an attractive walking trail around the lake, with strategically located benches and vegetation identification markers for the benefit of budding naturalists. Just south of Vian on Highway 82 is the Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge. The American bald eagle, along with thousands of Canadian and snow geese, take up residence at the refuge each year. Whitetail deer, wild turkey and several species of duck are abundant, as well as mink, otter and beaver. Bird watchers will enjoy the many species of non-game and native songbirds that frequent the wildlife refuge daily. For information, contact the Vian Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 687 (603 N. Its name is from the French “salaisiau” meaning “salt provision.” Native Americans, explorers, trappers and early settlers were familiar with the natural salt deposits found near area streams. Today Sallisaw is an expanding center for commerce and tourism. Several museums and historical sites are located in or a short drive from the city, including Sequoyah’s home, northeast of the city. 1828 - First edition of the “Cherokee Phoenix” is printed (also the first Native-American newspaper). Page 52 www.laketenkiller.com Lower Illinois River Year-round fishing and record catches make Gore ‘Trout Capital of Oklahoma’ Year-round trout fishing and record breaking catches have given Gore the right to lay claim to the title of “Trout Capital of Oklahoma.” To check out the Gore claim and enjoy the outdoors while experiencing some terrific fishing, MarVal Resort on the Lower Illinois River is the place. MarVal Resort offers, in addition to the excellent trout fishing, tent camping, RV hookups, heated pool, nine-hole mini-golf course, volleyball court, game room, snack bar, horseback riding and a nature trail. Deluxe cabins also are available. MarVal has a clubhouse with a full kitchen that seats up to 100. Great for family reunions, groups and weddings. The 12-mile stretch of the Lower Illinois River is stocked with 100,000 rainbow trout annually at three sites — MarVal Resort, Tenkiller Power House and River Road Access Area. Trout tournaments are held three times a year and the river is heavily stocked with lunker-class trout for these events. Water releases from Tenkiller Dam bring white bass on their spawning run in the spring and striped bass all year. The Lower Illinois River is known for striped bass with a 47pound, 8-ounce record fish. Catfish can also be found in deep holes along the river. Fishing is a popular sport for all ages on the Lower Illinois River with tournaments held regularly.
