BULLDOGS November 2012 Hotchkiss High School Newsletter Congratulations!!!! The Hotchkiss High School girls, coached by Mr. Cowan, are the state cross country champions! A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL . . . . . It is hard to believe that we are already halfway through the first semester; the holidays are right around the corner. Our students have done a fantastic job so far this year, with very few interruptions in the day due to student issues. Hopefully, during the next seven weeks they can keep up the level of excellence. This time of year brings a lot of disruptions, in and out of the classroom, and it is easy to fall behind. As always, I encourage you to stay involved in your child’s education and give their teacher a call if you have any questions. We would like to congratulate the girl’s cross-country team on winning the state championship this past weekend in Colorado Springs and the boy’s team for finishing fourth. We expect a repeat in 2013 because all of our point scorers were underclassmen. The volleyball team recently completed their season at the district tournament in Kremmling, although they didn’t advance to the regionals, it has been a very successful season in that we increased our overall win total from three last year to nine this fall. We look forward to next year with many of the team members returning. The tennis team had a strong season with many wins, with the highlight being a fourth place finish at the annual Delta County tournament. Finally, our football begins their quest for a state championship this weekend in Wiggins with the first round of the playoffs. Congratulations to all our fall athletes. Way to make Hotchkiss High School and the Hotchkiss community proud! If you have any questions, or need any assistance in any way don’t hesitate to give us a call. Have a great Thanksgiving! National Honors Society Volunteers For the fifth consecutive year, National Honor Society (NHS) members volunteered their time at the Kid’s Area during Mountain Harvest Festival. NHS students painted faces, helped with games and handed out prizes. The Kids’ Area is sponsored by the Kampe Foundation who wrote “We sincerely appreciate their (NHS) contribution to this fun, communitybuilding event.” Thanks to the following students for their great volunteer effort: Bethany Malievsky,!!Earl Gaub,!Annie Stechert,!Caleb Schelle,!Chris Allen,!Ross LeValley, Gabrielle Matheson, Ciara!Beegle, Amber Pagone,!!Natalie Anderson, Daryl Batt,!Jenny Celis.! Outdoor Art for Homecoming by the College Art students Many of you may be wondering what the freshly painted trees at Hotchkiss High are all about. The trees are painted to protect the bark from the sun, much like people who use sunscreen in the summer. However, the College Art Appreciation class has taken the much deeper meaning. We feel the bottom of the tree is painted to show how Hotchkiss High students started out, but the branches are left without color because we are going to branch out and creatively go our separate ways. Each person in our school is a bulldog and every tree represents the people in our school. Each tree has its own personal texture, just like each individual person. The people in the town and from other towns will see the individuals reflected in the trees as they drive into the parking lot. The colors of the trees stand out brightly, much like the students that shine bright, heading to the future. That brightness leads people up to the door of our school with a line of alternating colors. The alternating red and white show a perfect balance between the purity and power that Hotchkiss has brought to our school. NHS volunteer Natalie Anderson helping with games at the Mountain Harvest Festival ************************************************************* Extra Chicken Wire? HHS art classes are still in need of chicken wire, any condition. Please bring it to the west side of the school by the Ag shop, or contact Mrs. Roeber ([email protected]) Going beyond power however, the paw print below the trees shows Hotchkiss pride and creativity. The paw print is our mark on the school giving a clear sign that we are here. As everyone can see, Hotchkiss is full of spirit. FFA News FFA has had a very busy month! News From the Dean (used with permission from College in Colorado) Grade 12 Finding a Job Strategies for Finding a Job As your teen graduates from high school, his plans probably include finding a job. Whether he’s looking for part-time summer work or beginning a career, here are some tried-and-true tips for making a tough job easier. Looking for work is work. If you don’t have a job, experts recommend spending 40 hours a week looking for one. Making a schedule of what you’ll do each day helps you stay on track. An active search is better than a passive one. Many people rely on answering want ads (online and in the newspaper), posting to job websites, and mailing out bunches of resumes. People love these methods because they don’t involve the discomfort of asking to be hired. But these aren’t always the most effective job-search strategies. Networking, calling businesses you’ve researched to find out if they’re hiring, and going on informational interviews may get better results. Don’t be shy about asking friends for help. Everybody knows what it feels like to look for work, and most people will be willing to help somebody who’s just starting out. Tell everybody you’re looking, and follow up with the people they suggest. Check in with a friend who can remind you to do the tasks you’ve assigned yourself and cheer you up when you need encouragement. Think of job-hunting as match-making. Your job search shouldn’t be random. Set a goal concerning the kind of job you want, and stay focused. Your job should match what you’re good at. Begin with the end in mind. Not every entry-level job is exciting, but all will teach you something about yourself and the world of work. Aim for good jobs that are stepping stones to great jobs. Be prepared to hear “no.” Job-hunting can be discouraging. The odds are that you’re going to get turned down - maybe a lot. Keep in mind that it only takes one “yes” to succeed. Say thank you. Say thanks to everybody who helps in your job search, including employers with whom you interview. If possible, send a note. You’ll stand out as somebody who is polite and interested in the work. It’s a scary question for many high school juniors and seniors. Even students who know what they want (and are well on the way to getting it) get nervous about the long list of things to do to get ready for the next step in their education. Here are some things to focus on during junior year: Investigate. Students should gather information about schools so they know where they want to apply next fall. Experts suggest that students apply to more than one school. To find the best match, students should select some schools that are difficult to get into and some that are easier. Junior year is also a great time to visit schools for a first-hand look. Take the SAT or ACT. Many schools select students based on grades and scores received on the SAT or ACT. Students may take these tests more than once. A first try during spring of junior year leaves time for a second try during fall of senior year. Don’t be discouraged by the high cost of college. Financial aid is available to families that need it. All students should plan on completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in January of their senior year. The FAFSA uses information about family income to determine the amount of financial help students receive. Remember that there are good educational options for every student. Four-year colleges, community colleges, tech/trade schools, and apprenticeships are all worth investigating to find the perfect fit. For more information, visit these websites: • www.collegeincolorado.org • www.knowhow2go.org Juniors should start looking at colleges now, and schedule a formal visit. It is never to early to start. Grade 9-10 Careers Getting Real about Career Exploration Young people often base their career goals on jobs they can see. They may seek high-profile jobs celebrated in the media or jobs held by people they know and admire. As they mature, students will get better at comparing their own skills and interests with job requirements. There are many things that families can do to support young people as they try to figure out what career path is right for them. Here’s how you can help your student make the leap from fantasy to reality. •Ask questions about her career plans: What education is required for this job? What do people in this field say they like and dislike? How much money do people make in this career? How many job openings exist? •Stay positive and allow him to figure out his strengths and weaknesses. Don’t criticize his career choices. Instead, talk about the skills and interests that his career choice requires. Let him reflect on whether his interests, skills, abilities, and values fit his dream job. •Your student can show you what jobs interest her by checking out one of the following career websites: -http://online.onetcenter.org/ -http://stats.bls.gov/oco/ -www.thefunworks.org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ovember 2012 ! !"#$%& '(#$%& )"*+$%& ,*$#*+$%& )-".+$%& /.0$%& !%1".$%& 2 3 4 /5676,0880#+629:: ; < = > ? 2: ,0#1*.6!J(.1+65*80# 3#$6K("#$6/56 LB%&(M+ //F6G%.C*+16A0##*.6 F.H-6I(%B6A0##*. =9::6 =9::6 A%&B08-16!%C0#8+6 )0D*6E#$+ @ EB*H10(#6A%& 22 23 24 LB%&6L.*+*#1%10(# 2; LB%&6L.*+*#1%10(# 2< 2= '(#1*++(.06A0##*.6 =94:6 2> /56!*D0P/0#%B+ N*1*.%#O+6A%& 2? 2@ 3: 32 QR6!IGRRS 33 QR6!IGRRS 34 QR6!IGRRS !1%1*6/56 I-%DJ0(#+-0J6 U%D* )-%#T+80C0#8 3< 3= 3> 3? 3@ 3; 4: VNWN655676RB%1-*6 ;W;W<94:W>
