ROUND 1 MATCH REPORTS
Kangaroos and Kiama
Kangaroos vs. Kiama Power
Saturday saw our mighty Joeys kick off their season on a
beautiful sunny day in Kiama. The boys joined with the Kiama
boys and were put through their paces in a series of skill drills.
Lachlan, Ben, Luc and William tackled all activities with much
gusto. Michael, Angus and Travis showed wonderful kicking
skills, while Seth, Zac and Nick were outstanding in the
handballing department.The day finished with a big game
which gave our players a chance to showcase their skills. The
game had many highlights including "Superboot" Tristian's
almost goal, the Burnett and Giobbi boys desparation around
the packs, and the ball winning ability of new boys Dylan and
Hamish. However the biggest highlight was the courageous
smother of Ethan which helped him claim the first "Joey of the
Week" award. Thanks to the parents who helped on the day.

We had a good turn out for the first game of the season and
were able to field 15 players, as did Kiama. The game
started at a quick pace, with a flurry of goals in the first
quarter. At the break it was 2 goals each for our boys and
the Power. The second quarter saw us claw our way to a 7
point lead with another goal and a behind. Some great
defensive work ensured that the Kiama score was
unchanged at half time.
The third quarter can only be described as a tough defensive
battle so that at the final break we were up by a goal. In the
forth quarter there was a lot of scrimmaging and ball ups,
with it proving very difficult to clear the ball from the pack.
Kiama managed to steal a couple of goals and push to the
lead by the final siren, however the Kangaroos should be
proud that they put in good effort all game
KANGAROOS V’S SWANS
This was a very tight contest between these two great teams. David, Keiran & Will played a ripper 4 quarters, while Christian,
Gavin & Jaad worked tirelessly all game. Hayden, Hamish, Jordan, Mathew & Dylan saw lots of the ball and handled it well.
Well done to all the team on holding out the Swans and coming up with a win!! Roo’s 2.9.21—Swans 3.2.20

A brilliant morning in Kiama saw the Roo's line up for game 1. A number of new players boosted the ranks to 15. The team
looked great in the complete strip and were keen to play. The game was a one sided affair from the outset. The tall centre for
Power dominated the ruck and corridor making contests difficult to win. The first qtr saw some strong tackling however the
Roo's seem behind the play and not keeping up with Power. Our defenders had their work cut out for them, James Blackley,
James McKinnon, Karl Burrows, Sam Matinca and Billy Fox tried hard to keep the Power at bay but were out manoeuvred.
There was some hard work winning the ball in defense only to have the ball sent back in by the tall centre. This was to be the
pattern for much of the game.The second qtr saw our centre come into the game a little more with Hugo, Jarrod and Liam
getting on the ground and attacking the football first, we started to get the ball out of the pack but not down the ground.Term
three we improved a little more and started to win the ruck, Alex Ball put his body between his opponent and the ball and won
his share of taps, however we need to mark up our opposition to take advantage of this. Connor, Lachlan, Sam G were moved
to the back line to give some fresh legs and resulted in the ball getting into our forward line on a number of occasions,
however we were still unable to capitalise on the hard work. Both Liam's were suffering from the flu but did what the could.
Overall there were some good signs for the Roo's the opportunistic mark by Lachlan to send the ball back into attack, great
second & third tackling attempts from a number of the boys including Jarrod, Hugo & Alex. The skills we see at training need
to used in the game. Things to work on for the Roo's;- Being first to the football, Shepherd your team mates, Stay on your
opposition player. Kiama Power were too strong today and they deserved the win. Kiama 10 goals, Roo's no score, mercy rule
applied.

NOTHING AT TIME OF PRINT

Well, after some encouraging form in the Gala Day and good efforts at training everyone was looking forward to a tough
contest on a sunny afternoon at Hollymount Oval. However new shorts and pre match enthusiasm weren't enough. The game
started OK and in the first quarter we went forward a number of times but could not convert this into scoring opportunities.
Then a string of goals by the Tigers seemed to take the wind out of our sails. The second and third quarters are best
forgotten, but in the last quarter with the help of a couple of Tigers players our confidence lifted and the attack on the ball was
much better. The fact that a couple of players were struggling with injury and some are yet to get along to training showed
and our intensity at the contest and run was limited. Craig tried hard all day and put in an excellent performance for his first
game. Lachie ran to all the right places, but was a bit rusty from lack of training. Jackson led to space in the first quarter and
Matt put his body on the line to repel the opposition defence. Kurt looked good when he managed to get clear and kick long
into the forward line. Nick was busy around the packs and Josh attcked the ball well in his first game. Hopefully we can learn
from this game and put into practice the teamwork and second efforts required. I know our players have the ability.

Kiama Power 10-8-68 defeated Kangaroos Red 5-9-39
Kangaroos Red had a slow start to the season with their loss against the improved Kiama Power. The team is made up of
four Reds and four Greys from last year and six new players so understandably it will take some time for the team to
get to know each other and gel into a unit. It wasn't until the last quarter that the team started to find each other with their
kicks and the difference was three great goals and chances for a few more. Hopefully the team can take this form into
next week's game against the formidable Tigers outfit. Jordan played a wonderful game first up for the club. He played
the first half in the backline and provided great re-bound for the team and then moved to the midfield and also contributed well. It was great to see a new player so willing to bring team mates into the game with handball and short
passes. Chris started in the midfield and then swapped places with Jordan and played equally well, winning heaps of hard
contested footy then used his elusiveness to break clear. Keegan got better as the game went on. He pulled down some
huge marks in the last quarter and finished off his work off with two straights kicks at goal. William was another strong
player at half back who used his pace and handball to team mates to get out of trouble. Liam never put a foot wrong on the
last line of defence and just cleaned up every opportunity that came his way. In the third quarter Jack lifted the team with
their first goal. He won the footy at half forward in a bit of space and determined that a goal was needed so just put his
head down went straight for goal. Terrific effort
Jack and great leadership. Max also scored a goal in the last quarter. After trying a number of positions, he ended up in
the midfield in the last quarter which seemed to suit him best as he was able to win some good possessions. Ray added
ball winning ability wherever he was moved, took some hard knocks and still fought on to play out a very solid four quarter
effort. Jarrod contested fiercely in the packs and tackled well too. Brendon, Ben and Sam all showed promise in their first
games and will no doubt improve greatly as the season goes on as they work out how to get themselves in the right position to win the footy, while Bryan is a busy player who will add bite and pace around the packs. Overall the effort
from everyone could not be faulted. Its just a matter of continuing to work hard over coming weeks and the results will
improve. SCOTT HOLMES
Northern Tigers Black defeated Figtree Roos 15 – 10 – 100 to 8 – 10 -58
In the midst of all sorts of controversy the under 15 Roos team took to the paddock proudly on Saturday, not to mention
some very proud parents who were delighted with the attitude of the boys when it came to the support of their female team
mate. Under the threat of loss of competition points and other sanctions the boys were unanimous in their support of
Maddison playing with the team despite a ruling from our controlling body that would deny her this right. As expected the
Tigers started strong and kicked 5 goals 1 in the first quarter but the Roos didn’t make it easy for them answering with 3
goals 3 and seeing the team go into the 2nd quarter a mere 10 points down. The Tigers continued to play their brand of fast
running football in the 2nd quarter kicking another 3 goals 4, with the Roos again fighting hard and putting on another 2
goals to their score. At the start of the 3rd quarter the Roos were still in it and after an inspirational word or two from their
coach took the paddock to keep the Tigers to a mere 2 goals 1. The Roos kicked 2 goals 7 for the quarter to keep
themselves in the game. Unfortunately for the Roos the Tigers had a bit more in the tank in the final quarter and ran away
with another 5 goals 4 with the Roos only able to add 1 goal to their tally.This game was about more than the points and
the team came away winners regardless of the full time score.
They embody what this football club is about Family, Fun, Footy.
