On Thursday, March 3rd our friend Calvin from the South East Region had an exciting adventure when he
travelled to Toronto to visit morning radio show co-hosts Scott Fox and Ashley Greco of The Z103.5 Morning
Show with Scott & Ashley, as well as Gary Gamble and Stacey Englehart of 88.5 The Jewel.
“I had the most wonderful opportunity to visit my favourite radio station Z103.5!! I am very interested in radio
broadcasting; it’s my dream to become an on-air announcer. That morning, I arrived at the radio station (after a
long drive from Kingston!) for 5:45 a.m. excited and nervous. Kathryn introduced me first to Gary and Stacey
from 88.5 The Jewel. It was really cool seeing them in action and it was especially interesting to see how Stacey
reported the traffic and news. They showed us a little about how they gathered the news.
Then I had an extremely good time talking with the morning show team at Z103.5. Ashley, Scott and Alyssa
were so friendly. They showed me so much of what they do and made it look even more enticing than it
already is! I had a blast and learned, at the same time, what it takes to make a show on the radio
work. Listening to Z103.5 is an amazing fun experience and now I know what goes on behind the magic. Thank
you Kathryn for making it happen! Awesome!!”

Securing the future for Canadians with disabilities
The RDSP is a savings plan that will assist families in planning for the long-term financial security of our relatives
with disabilities. Over time, the RDSP will provide billions of dollars to supplement income, enable home ownership, and enhance quality of life for as many as 500,000 Canadians with disabilities. RDSPs became available at
financial institutions in December of 2008.
Highlights of the RDSP:
Like Registered Education Savings Plans, the plan will allow funds to be invested tax-free until withdrawal
Any individual that is eligible for the Disability Tax Credit may establish an RDSP
In the case of a minor child, a parent or guardian can establish and direct the RDSP
$200,000 lifetime contribution limit, but there are no annual limits on contributions
Contributions permitted by the individual, family member and/or friends
No restrictions on when the funds can be used or for what purpose

How is my tax credit calculated for charitable donations?
The first $200 you donate is eligible for a federal tax credit of 15% of the donation amount. After the first $200, the federal
tax credit increases to 29% of the amount over $200. Generally, you can claim all or part of this amount up to a limit of 75%
of your net income. For gifts of certified cultural property or ecologically sensitive land, you may be able to claim up to 100%
of your net income. You may also be eligible for a provincial tax credit. The amount of the provincial tax credit available varies
between provinces.
Donations must be made by December 31st to be claimed against your income for the current year. However, you do not
have to claim all of the donations you made this year on your current-year return. You can carry forward any donations you
do not claim in the current year and claim them on your return for any of the next five years. You can only claim donations
once.
You have to claim tax credits for gifts you carried forward from a previous year before you claim tax credits for gifts in the
current year. If you are claiming a carryforward, attach a note to your return indicating the year of the return with which you
submitted the official donation receipt, the portion of the eligible amount you are claiming this year, and the amount you are

KERRY’S PLACE AUTISM SERVICES
It was with mixed emotions that we greeted Mr. Tony Hope to the
KPAS Head Office in February 2011. During his visit, Tony delivered the
latest generous donation from The Masonic Foundation of Ontario in
support of the KPAS Enhanced Support Program. The support provided
by The Masonic Foundation of Ontario will be used to provide shortterm crisis prevention and intervention supports to people with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families throughout Ontario.
During Tony’s visit, KPAS extended a heartfelt thanks to Mr. Hope for
all of his support and advocacy over the past countless number of years.
Tony has been instrumental in enhancing the quality of life for people
with an ASD. Tony and his wife have embarked on another life adventure
which will take Tony away from his roles with The Masonic Foundation
of Ontario. We wish them both only best wishes.

Kerry’s Place is pleased to announce the newly designated
Toronto Residents’ Fund. This fund has been specifically
established to provide opportunities for social activities for
the residents of our Toronto locations. In the past, funding
for social activities came from the annual and popular Toronto Bowlathon event. The intention of creating a designated fund is to enable KPAS to receive gifts throughout the
year with the purpose of promoting and encouraging social
inclusion. By supporting the Toronto Residents’ Fund you
will be helping people with an ASD achieve personal life
goals, while benefitting from different life experiences. Opportunities for and access to social activities are important
to everyone’s overall health and quality of life – especially for
people with an ASD who commonly encounter difficulties in
these areas.
Contributions to the Toronto Residents’ Fund will allow our
Toronto residents to continue to have access to the financial
resources necessary to enable them to seek out and participate in recreational and social experiences for personal
growth. Last year, with access to this funding some of our
residents enjoyed a restful weekend at a cottage in Kawartha
Lakes while others experienced country living at a rural
property and still more participated in various day trips in

The 18th Annual KPAS Toronto Bowlathon was held on
Sunday April 10th at the Thorncliffe Bowlerama in East
Toronto.
This year marked several changes for the Bowlathon.
Volunteer Eleanor Ritchie Stephen stepped down as the
event organizer but she remained a fantastic mentor and
the event was enjoyed by about 70 people. Another
change involves the ability to donate to the Toronto Residents’ Fund year round. Communication went out to past
donors inviting them to join us at the event as well as the
opportunity to donate to the Fund so that Toronto residents could enjoy social activities including vacations.
At the event, bowlers, support staff, family and friends
enjoyed competing against each other and all registered
participants were eligible to win fantastic prizes.

Another busy winter has passed for the KPAS Toronto Community Supports team. While program participants have finished
the winter session of the Social Skills Group for 12-18 year old youth with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, other programs like
the Music Therapy pilot program and the CASIE (CAMH/KPAS Asperger’s Syndrome Interaction and Education) program are soon
coming to a close. But not for long! Please call 416-537-2000 to ask about registering for the Fall. The piloted Asperger’s
Syndrome Job Readiness Program has also finished successfully (please see article in this edition). As always, the Adult Social
group, the Partnership in Autism, the Swim Club, the Music Group, and the Weekend Adult Respite program continue in full-swing.
Thanks to the Edwards Charitable Foundation, we are pleased to announce that new pilot projects for children and young
adults with an ASD will be starting in May and June (please check our website for details as they arise or request to be added to our

Spring is finally HERE!
Spring is finally here and the individuals at the Weekend Day Respite program could not be anymore excited. This is a time
when outside activities become the norm and allow participants to interact with nature. All winter long there have been
plans to go to High Park, Niagara Falls, Centre Island, the Lakeshore beaches, and more. The time has finally come and weekend by weekend we will play under the sun.
April 9 & 10 temperatures were what we needed to pursue a wonderful trip. We decided to first drive to Niagara Falls and
together walk to enjoy the scenery and the smell of blooming flowers. Dan, Jason, Gab, Larry and Tony showed great enthusiasm by the thought of travelling and having ice cream by the falls. So we gathered our music and food and together left for our
adventure.
The trip was fantastic…. clear blue skies and empty roads made it smooth sailing, and while singing along the way we were
there in no time! The weather was more than what we expected, we were able to walk around as planned, eat delicious
treats and enjoy the scenery and the Falls. The participants were very happy and it was just a delightful afternoon.
Upon returning back to the coach house something in the air had changed and our jackets seemed no longer necessary; hopefully (just dreaming!) it will continue to stay this way! We all look forward to doing more wonderful outdoor activities and we
all look forward to spending more time with each other very soon.

At the end of March this year, all 6 participants who had
begun their journey towards competitive employment back
in October, successfully completed this six-month pilot program. Through a grant from the federal government’s Service Canada program, JVS invited Kerry’s Place (both Toronto and Central East regions) to collaborate with them to
offer this unique program to individuals (18-30) with Asperger’s Syndrome (AS) to prepare them for employment.
Although this was funded as a pilot project, the partners are
looking into new funding and other means of collaborating.
Aside from the strong commitment, enthusiasm, and successes of the participants, both JVS and KPAS contributed to
the overall success of the program. This included intake,
curriculum development, vocational assessments, introductory and job retention workshops, job coaching, weekly
consultations with a KPAS Autism Associate, and job placement coordination and maintenance.
The following quotes from the participants highlight some of
the struggles that this population sometimes faces, and are,
more importantly, testament to their enormous success in
finishing the program.
Shaun: “I loved working with people here. Everyone was understanding and they taught me greater patience and how to deal
with my anger.”
Tobias: “I’m going through a lot of transition and this program
helped me through.”
Bruno: “I found the program very convincing. When it comes to
fighting our disadvantages at work and in society, the program
promoted good advice to disclose at an interview and how to get
along.”
Julian: “I felt it was very insightful, the discussions we were having. We learnt from the experiences we had. We managed to
digest a lot of information about the workplace.”
Autism Associate Kathy Stamogiannos enjoyed her role as
facilitator of job retention workshops, a role she shared with
JVS job coach Gail Silver, who said the participants were at
first “strangers in a strange land”; however, by the end of
the program they had found common ground with the content and with one another and, as Kathy put it: “they were
teaching each other”.
Special recognition goes to Kerry’s Place Central East Region who also completed their pilot with great success—to
Shana Gibson and her dedicated staff, as well as to JVS for
giving us this opportunity to partner with them and provide
an essential service to people with AS. Finally, enormous
kudos goes to my new Rising Stars this month: Kathy Stamogiannos and Natasha Roberts for their dedication to the
participants, their overall contribution to the program, and
their tenacity in sticking with the ups-and-downs that invariably come with a brand-new project!

A gentleman whom we support in the Supported Independent
Living (SIL) program in Toronto completed the Asperger’s
Syndrome Job Readiness Program this March, a program implemented through a joint partnership between KPAS and JVS
Toronto. With the support of both agencies, he participated in
a three-week intensive workshop where he had the opportunity to explore his interests and talents, and to work on (and
share with his peers) some of the skills necessary to enter the
workforce. With the help of his job coach, he has created a
resume and has begun looking for part-time work. This gentleman hopes to eventually work part-time at a library or bookstore. He would like to sincerely thank Stephanie Conant, Manager of Community Supports at KPAS, and everyone at JVS
Toronto who advocated for and helped support him to begin
this important phase in his life.

All workshops are FREE of charge and available to anyone interested in attending. Please visit

CENTRAL WEST REGION: PEEL
Family Resource Day appointments provide an opportunity for individuals and/or their
families to discuss and brainstorm with an Autism Consultant around issues regarding
Autism Spectrum Disorder. Family Resource Days are held at the Brampton Resource
Centre, the Mississauga Resource Centre, the Malton Resource Centre and the Bolton Early
Years Centre. Preset one-hour appointments will be offered during the evening, daytime and
two Saturdays per month. Some flexibility in scheduling appointments may be possible.
Appointments are open to individuals, family members, support workers, teachers and other
professionals. There is no cost for this service. We will be offering Group Family Resource
Days each month. These Group FRD’s are 2 ½ hour long sessions designed to explore the
following topics: toileting, behaviour, or a new ASD diagnosis. These sessions are opportunities for families to share their knowledge as well as network together as they gain new
information about the topics mentioned above. Please note that for Group FRD’s, childcare
is not available. You can book your appointment by calling Linda Jongsma at 905-457-1130
ext. 206. When booking your appointment you will be asked to provide your contact
information as well as a brief outline on the topic you wish to discuss.
Adult Social Groups
Adult social groups run in
both Brampton and Mississauga for people 18 years
and older with a diagnosis of
Asperger’s Syndrome and
PDD/NOS.
Games Night: Come out and play a variety of board games
once a month at either our Mississauga Resource Centre
and/or our Brampton Resource
Centre.
Community Groups
On a monthly basis come out to a variety of locations such
as the movies, Laser Quest, dinner, the pool hall and many
