Welcome to the Hamar region
Prøysenstua
With its stable climate, diverse nature, rich cultural heritage
and wide range of activities, the Hamar region can offer exciting adventures all year round. Situated between Mjøsa and
the mountain plateaus, it is ideal for walking, biking, golf,
fishing, horseback riding or skiing - cross-country as well as
alpine. Swimming opportunities are many, and you have a
choice between idyllic forest lakes, beaches along Mjøsa or
Ankerskogen Swimming Pool.
If you are looking for quality, traditional food and the good
life, the Hamar region is the ideal destination. Manor farms,
with a rich cultural heritage and welcoming hosts, are lined
up like pearls on a string. The food is local, and dishes are
cooked from scratch.
With its diverse and vibrant cultural life, the region offers
everything from fine arts to large sporting events. Several
theatres, numerous concert venues, opera, lively shows, an
exciting blues scene and a wide range of festivals provide excellent entertainment - all year round.
Ankerskogen
23 July 2014 is the 100th anniversary of the author and artist
Alf Prøysen (1914-1970), and it will be celebrated throughout
the centenary year.
Facts
The Hamar region contains fours municipalities: Hamar,
Stange, Løten and Ringsaker.
Total area: 2 726 square kilometres. Population: 89 000.
Lake Mjøsa: Norway´s largest lake. 117 kilometres/468 metres.
5
Hamar
Hamar – a central town in the
Innlandet area
The Hamar region is the most densely populated
area between Trondheim and Oslo, with approximately 85,000 people divided between four municipalities: Hamar, Ringsaker, Stange and Løten.
The countryside in Hamar municipality is beautiful
and varied, which means you have an abundance of
recreational activities to choose from. Its proximity
to Lake Mjøsa is much appreciated, and the light
here in Hedmark county is unique. Each season has
its own charm! In 2014, the public will be invited to
visit a brand new, modern culture centre, which we
are sure will put the region more firmly on the map.
Ankerskogen is a unique swimming and sports facility for the whole family, and in winter, the many
ski trails and ice skating facilities are popular.
The town centre is home to a university college and
a vibrant student community. Shops, restaurants
and green areas give the town both character and
charm, and more and more
people are proud of this municipality and region. In
2013, Hamar was awarded
the Urban Environment
Award for its focus on urban
development.
Morten Aspeli

It has a thriving sports and
cultural scene and many arenas that people can participate in. The whole of July is
packed with festivals for both
children and adults, and there is an almost endless
series of concerts and other experiences on offer. In
the time ahead, we will make sure that Hamar and the
Hamar region become even better known outside the
region’s borders. We aim to get more people to move
here, and more tourists to visit us. The Hamar region
is one of Norway’s inland gems that we will happily
share with you!
6
Stange
– a municipality of opportunities!
When visiting Stange, do not miss the Pilgrims' Way
featuring Stange Church, our Millennium Site, dating
back to the 1200s.
If you find yourself in Stange Vestbygd in the afternoon, enjoy the sunset from a bench at Lahlumshøgda and you will be treated to a picture postcard
view not easily matched.
Jordbærkirken
But Stange municipality is far more than just the fertile areas in the west. To the east and north, the
manor farms give way to smallholdings. In these
areas the soil is not rich, it is barren. The forests are
dense with shimmering fishing lakes - ideal for
walks.
Furthermore, the area is abound with local culture.
During the summer season, you can enjoy plays at
Kvennstuguteateret, one of Hedmark's most spectacular open-air stages; plays focusing on the fight
for survival, political upheavals and the emigration
to America and comedies performed in a Hedmark
dialect.
Welcome to the municipality of opportunities: enjoy
a quiet evening on the banks of lake Mjøsa, play a
round of golf at one of the Nordic region's most
spectacular courses, visit the national museum for
emigration or maybe just savour some peace and
tranquillity by a forest tarn.

Løten
Would you like to experience Løten?
We will give you a warm, hospitable welcome if you
visit one of our pleasant accommodation enterprises, cafés or restaurants or if you plan to travel
by train from the well-known Løten Nærstasjon station.
We will be happy to welcome you to one of the many
events that take place here throughout the year, for
example the Landeveisbirken cycling race in June, a
ski race at Budor, or the exciting tastes on offer at
the Pultost cheese and Aquavit festival from 5 to 6
September.
Welcome to a regional hub with
lots to offer!
Would you like to walk on lovely paths that wind
their way through fairy tale forests and wilderness?
Would you like to go high up and enjoy views of the
whole Hedmark area from Budor, with skis on your
feet and your rucksack packed with local food from
Løten?
Would you like to learn about both industrial history
and international art history at the Munch art centre
in Klevfos? Or perhaps the history of aquavit production at Løiten Brænderi?
Would you like to relive some
of Edvard Munch’s happy
childhood memories on a cycling tour in Ådalsbruk?
Bente Elin Lilleøkseth
Mayor
Would you like to go swimming in the lovely, still waters
of Rokosjøen lake, among
water lilies and to the sound
of happy children and adults
on the beach?
The possibilities are endless in Løten, and we would
love you to take part in them!

Ringsaker
Welcome to Ringsaker!
Ringsaker is in a beautiful natural setting that extends from Norway’s biggest lake, Mjøsa, to the
Ringsakerfjellet mountains with summits of up to
1,000 metres. In the heart of the mountains lies
Sjusjøen, with unique facilities and conditions for
skiing, cycling and outdoor activities – a paradise
for outdoor enthusiasts both summer and winter.
By Lake Mjøsa, you will find Jessnes, the perfect
place for an idyllic summer day of swimming, boating and activities by the shore. The beautiful cultural
landscape of Nes and Helgøya island is perfect for excursions. You can cycle around Helgøya, visit interesting specialist shops, enjoy good food or visit some
of the big farms that are open to the public. If you are
looking for more urban activities, you will find what
you need in Moelv and Brumunddal. The two towns
in the area are pleasant and intimate and offer good
shopping experiences, with interesting shops that
offer something out of the ordinary. The new market
square in Brumunddal is a charming meeting point
for both locals and visitors. Here, you can enjoy a cup
of coffee and fresh croissants from the bakery, or join
in the buzzing activity on market days and watch entertaining performances in the square all year round.
Brumunddal has an active cultural scene that offers
exciting, varied cultural experiences throughout the
year. Ringsaker is where Alf Prøysen, the famous
Norwegian writer and musician, came from, and 23
July 2014 is the 100th anniversary of his birth. It will
be celebrated at small and big events throughout the
centenary year, where one of
the highlights will be the
opening of the new Prøysen
house beside his childhood
home at Rudshøgda on the
actual anniversary.
Ringsaker is a good place to
be, whether you are visiting
for a day or choose to stay
forever!

Oslo to Nidaros lie six regional pilgrim centres, including the Pilgrim
Centre in Hamar.
The centre is situated on the site of the old marketplace in the area now
known as Domkirkeodden (the cathedral promontory), on historic
ground with views of Hamar Cathedral, which was and continues to be
an important destination for many pilgrims.
There are places you can stay overnight along the Pilgrims’ Route,
many of them in idyllic settings. They vary with respect to standard
and price. Booking in advance is recommended. Information about the
services on offer etc. are available via a digital map at: http://pilegrimsleden.no/no/map/gudbrandsdalsleden/
Throughout history, pilgrims have also travelled on waterways and
Lake Mjøsa, and the paddle steamer Skibladner is now part of the Pilgrims’ Route as a ‘pilgrims’ boat’. Pilgrims get a discount when they
show their pilgrim’s passport. Passports are available at the Pilgrim
Centre.
The Pilgrim Centre in Hamar is a visitor and information centre. We
can help you with suggestions for tours/walks and provide information,
maps and brochures. We also organise local and regional thematic
walks along the Pilgrims’ Route. The centre has its own hostel and is
open daily from May to September. You are welcome to stop by!

DS Skibladner
When the ship's bell rings and Skibladner puts out to sea,
you will discover "the art of slow travel". Skibladner has been
carrying passengers across Mjøsa since 1856, and is today
the world's oldest paddle steamer still providing this type of
service. An impeccably dressed head waiter will ensure that
you are comfortable in one of the region's best restaurants.
The unique interior, with its plush, mahogany, brass ceiling
lights and gilded mirrors, are reminiscent of a time when gentlemen arrived wearing top hats and ladies came dressed in
layers of skirts.
A varied menu is available on board; you can start the day
with a breakfast, enjoy a salad or sandwich for lunch, or indulge in Skibladner's renowned, traditional salmon followed
by delicious strawberries for dessert. The ship is fully licensed and offers its own Skibladner wine with a specially
designed label signed by a local artist associated with the
Mjøsa area.
Skibladner is available for chartered trips the month prior
to and after the season. During these periods, a range of
themed events with food and music are also held.
Scheduled service, 2013 season:
