The Four Dogs of War Motoring History Tour of the UK
by Mark Bulwicz, Lou Defabio, Bob De Lucia and Bruce Schecter
This February, four intrepid DVT members made the
pilgrimage to England for a long weekend “educational
mission”. Where’s Bob was the first to arrive in England,
a day early to visit friends just up the road from Heathrow,
in Buckinghamshire. Haybale, Sanford, and Clavin,
arrived the next day early Thursday morning, all on
separate flights, and arriving at different terminals at
Heathrow. The three met up at British Airways Terminal
5, and elected to take the slower 45 minute Tube ride to
London, rather than the 15 minute Heathrow Express,
because the tube went straight to Piccadilly Circus where
our London hotel was located, appropriately enough, on
Coventry Street. This allowed us to tour London baggage
free until our rooms were ready for a late afternoon checkin and to also meet up with Where’s Bob.
After the rendezvous at our hotel, the Thistle Piccadilly,
the four of us began our tour with a walk through scenic
London on a sunny, spring-like day through Trafalgar
Square, into Whitehall; past The Horse Guards, and 10
Downing Street, to our first destination, the Churchill
War Rooms, located underneath The Treasury. The
War Rooms are a branch of the Imperial War Museum.
PAGE 1
Although we only meandered for 90 minutes, the
historical information this museum provides is rich
enough to easily extend a visit into 3 hours or more.
Continuing our sunny day plans, we walked to the
Covent Garden district, for a pub lunch and a visit to
the London Transport Museum. The museum is
another hidden motoring theme gem with a
wonderful history of London public transportation
system of the bus and the Tube. It was packed with
school children and adults alike.
Our day was quickly passing and we had one more of
the war-time theme museum on our itinerary, so,
concluding the tube would slow us down, we opted for
a quick ride in the omnipresent black London taxi to
the other side of the Thames, to visit the Britain at
War Experience, a great little museum that gives you
the flavor of the “blitz”, and how it was for Londoners
to live city life during those desperate times.

Since we were on the other side of the Thames, this
gave us the opportunity to walk across the iconic and
well-photographed, Tower Bridge for a Tube ride
back to Piccadilly for a quick check-in and refresh at
the hotel, then off on another Tube line run to the
Ace Café. The Ace Café opened in 1938 providing,
rare in those days; 24 hour café service to the
transport worker community, but it quickly became
the London biker café of fame. It was also scheduled
to be a Harley-Davidson get together night at the
Ace. We also managed to meet up there with longtime Delaware Valley Triumphs member Brian Jones,
who now lives in London for business.
Day 2 started with a Tube ride back to Heathrow to
convert Tube transport to a National Car rental.
Fr o m He a t h r o w i t w a s d u e n o r t h t o v i s i t
Honeybourne Mouldings, in Bidford-on-Avon, in
Warwickshire. They are a small factory that does very
big business in making fiberglass reproductions of
classic car body panels; wings, spoilers, tops, etc., for
Triumphs, MGs, Jags, (among many marques). Mark
was enquiring about a possible 2 piece surrey top for
his TR4A, and he was favorably impressed by the
craftsmanship and attention to detail. The hands-on
shop (and OSHA challenge) makes just about
anything classic car from their many moulds they
created from original production pieces. The owners
were very gracious to show us all around and explain
their manufacturing process. Now how do we get
that surrey top shipped inexpensively back to the
US? That is the problem US sales present, lots of
inquiries, but sales are rare due to shipping these
unwieldy pieces.
From there it was north to Stoneleigh and our 1st
day at the 3-day Race Retro Show. Many Triumphs
were on display in parts, service, or club booth
display, and there were even some on display for
sale. This is a great 3-day show with hundreds of
vendors, sports car clubs, plus classic racing and
rally cars on display, or for sale. Show special
features include live rally racing, plus interviews
PAGE 2
with motoring legends, including legendary RAC
Rally winner Russell Brookes, and Jaguar’s Norman
Dewis. In addition, in building 4 there were
hundreds of vendors in the autojumble section, in
which we spent a good amount of time and money.
We also reconnected with our friend Kevin, a
press photographer who we met a few years ago at
Race Retro, coincidentally a fellow Triumph TR7
owner. We then checked in at our favorite Holiday
Inn in Kenilworth, and walked over to the Green
Man Pub for dinner and a few cask-pumped pints.
The next morning we met Graham Robson for
breakfast. For those who don’t know Graham, he
has had a long career in the British motoring
industry including running the ‘works’ motorsport
team at Triumph. He has been an independent
writer, historian and motoring consultant for many
years, and has written more than 130 books. We
had a conversation with Graham about a special
upcoming anniversary UK event in May, 2013,
STAR90. Look for a separate article about that in
a future issue.
We then headed down the road with Graham to
the National Heritage Motor Centre in Gaydon to
present a plaque for their car club wall
commemorating DVT’s 35th anniversary. We now
have 3 plaques on their club display wall, I would
assume more than any other classic car club. If you
have not been to the Heritage Center in Gaydon
recently, you should visit again. There have been a
lot of renovations and the car collection is better
than ever. In addition to the many Triumphs in a
timeline of their manufacture, there are many
other lines of British cars and special exhibits such
as the current exhibit on chasing the land-speed
record. From there it was back to Race Retro,
and then another evening at DVT’s infamous
watering hole, The Virgins and the Castle Pub,
with Kevin and Graham.

The Four Dogs of War Motoring History Tour of the UK - Continued
Sunday had us back at Race Retro for a short time,
then off to Coventry to visit a few historic motoring
sites. We started with a visit to the Triumph
monument on appropriately enough, Herald Avenue,
where the factories used to stand. The only remnant
that remains is a fully functioning community social
and sports team clubhouse, the Standard Triumph
Sports & Recreation Club, where many years ago shift
workers, after their hard day assembling your
Triumph would go in for a pint or two. We brazenly
walked into the club and were greeted by some
former Triumph employees watching an important
football match over a few pints. They invited us to
become members of the club, and gave us our
officially notarized blue club membership book.
We then drove over to the Brown’s Lane part of
Coventry to see where the old Jaguar factories where.
Some of the Jaguar factory buildings are still in use, as
we were told by yet another social club member, this
time the Jaguar Sports and Social Club. And to our
surprise the Jaguar Heritage Museum across from the
old factory on Brown’s Lane was still open, though it
will be relocating soon to another location in the
Coventry. The collection is extraordinary in its
scope of Jaguars presented, over 120 cars dating from
1896 onwards. A traditional “Sunday Roast” dinner at
a local Coventry pub, the Lion, was recommended by
a former Jaguar employee, and completed our
motoring themed day.
Monday was departure day back to the US, but not
before a stop to the Milton Keynes area to visit
another historic UK landmark, Bletchley Park. This
historic site was the headquarters for Churchill’s
Secret Intelligence and Computer Headquarters. It is
home to the infamous “Enigma “decoding machines
and code-breaking operations, as well as the world’s
first modern computer, “Colossus”. If a Classic Car
Owner ever decides to run a war, particularly Spitfire
owners, these four Dogs of War are available for
consultation.
PAGE 3
From there, the four Dogs of War, beaten, tired,
and always thirsty for more UK Motoring History,
headed to Heathrow and flights back to
Philadelphia, Newark, and Kennedy airports. One
more thing and with apologies to the Beatles: His
name was Bruce, we called him Dr. Killjoy, but now
everyone knows him as Clavin.

Director’s Message
by Robert “Where’s Bob” DeLucia
!
Fellow DVT’rs:
As I look out the window today as I
write this, it is warm, nearing 80
degrees, a little rain this morning but
as noon approaches it looks like time
for a TR6 drive! Driving season is
officially here this month! Already we
have seen several events in late March
that we have had many LBC’s attend.
The March 20th GTR wa s just
amazing, with great weather, a full
deck of DVT’ers, and a parking lot
just full of Triumphs parked together.
Very impressive, especially for March!
I expect the same, if not more for
April’s GTR.
Coming up this month on April 28th
is our annual Spring rallye vs. the
Philadelphia MG club. Since we are
now the current defending champion
of the acclaimed “Lucas Cup”, please
try to make this event so we can
repeat our championship (and really,
really get the MG club ticked off at
us!).
The big event in June for DVT will
be our acclaimed “Cars and
Motorcycles of England” show on
Saturday, June 2nd at the usual
Oakbourne Mansion. This is a huge
financial obligation for our club, so
please help us by volunteering to
help somehow that week or day, and
also by getting your car registered
asap for cash flow.
Your DVT Board is striving to come
up with several new events, and
some re-invents. In the next few
months look for a June re-visit to
Peace Valley in Bucks County for a
photoshoot, picnic, and visit to the
Peace Valley Winery. Coming up
later in July will be a visit to the
Trenton Thunder ballpark for a
ballgame, and a Classic car show,
with special designated parking, at
the riverside ballpark. If you have
any new events to suggest, please
contact Bruce or me.
Bruce has done a great job of
keeping members aware of what will
be going on via emails, Facebook,
a n d a t t h e G T R’s . T h e e v e n t
calendar is immense, with many local
events, and many event within LBC
driving range. Enjoy!
With the great weather, and the
immediate availability of our DVT
Facebook page, let’s also try to come
up with some “spur of the moment”
weekend drives, just to get out.

The Fastest Triumph TR4 You’ve Never Seen
By Bruce Schechter, Bob De Lucia, Mark Bulwicz, and Lou DiFabio
While roaming the four halls of the 2012 Race Retro
Show in Stoneleigh Park, we came across one of many
vintage “purpose built” race cars that was quite
unusual. It was clearly custom built and a bit
reminiscent of the Cobra Daytona coupe. Was it an
early Cobra prototype or some other exotic racer?
Turns out it is a 1962 Triumph TR-4! Exotic racer
indeed, a 1962 Triumph TR4 registered as SAH 137
which was to later become the TR4 SLR.
The car was purchased as a new TR4 from Sid Hurrels
SAH Tuning (which eventuall y morphed into
TriumphTune) by a gent called Neil Dangerfield who
campaigned it in England in 1962-63. He also drove it
to Monza in 1963, raced in a 3 hour GP support race,
where he finished 2nd and then drove it home to
England.
In 1963, Chris Lawrence took over preparation of the
car. At that time Lawrence, John Sprinzel and
Dangerfield decided to remove the TR4 body and
replace it with a more aerodynamic one. An
aluminum body was built by Williams and Pritchard
and the car was then built up by Chris Lawrence,
thus the SLR (Sprinzel LawrenceTune Racing) was
born and first shown at the Olympia Race Car Show
in 1964. If you recognize the SLR name that’s
because the group also built three other cars on
Morgan Chassis’. Dangerfield and Lawrence raced
the car in 1964 and 1965 at circuits like Goodwood,
Spa, Francorchamps and Siverstone.
In 1966 the car became ineligible for international
motorsport due to regulation changes. At that point
Lawrence and Dangerfield set it up for “inter-marque
“racing by adding wider wheels, bigger pistons and a
Lawrence Tune cross-flow head. It also has the
distinct honor of being the last car to leave the
starting line at Goodwood before the circuit closed
in 1966.
The current owner purchased the car in 1986 and
began the restoration process that culminated in its
entry in the inaugural Goodwood revival meeting in
1998. The car was driven in the “Dream Grid”
Parade by Neil Dangerfield and has been a regular at
Goodwood ever since. In fact, it was reunited with
its Morgan SLR brethren at the 2010 Goodwood
event.
The car in currently being prepared by Steve Hall of
TR Enterprises in Blidworth, near Nottingham with
the goal of making it FIA compliant and installing a
new competitive driveline. A true piece of Triumph
racing history. We are pleased to report this
additional example for why we recommend a visit to
Race Retro at Stoneleigh in February or a visit to the
NEC Classic Motor Show in Birmingham in
November; to see, touch, and learn ever more about
the extraordinary history of our Triumphs.

FROM THE LIBRARY
by Marc Roland
As we enter the New Year, the library project
continues to grow. The club has acquired two
new books:
The “Schiffer automotive series Triumph TR2TR8”, and “Herald Vitesse Spitfire Workshop
Manual” by Standard Triumph (circa 1967).
The Schiffer book is mostly a collection of ads,
many of them from Germany. The Workshop
Manual I picked up while in Austin, TX. It’s 3ring binder in excellent condition.
Meanwhile, some of our members have
donated books to the library. This is a welcome
new development, and helps us to get a nice
collection of books going.
• “Classics of the Road” by David Burgess
Wise. Clive picked this up in England. No
Triumphs here, but a great reference on prewar cars from around the world.
• “Winning: the racing life of Paul Newman”
by Matt Stone donated by Bob Hunter. I
thumbed through this one, there appears to
be coverage and photos of Paul Newman’s
Triumphs.
• Chip Krout donated a fairly used copy of the
“Triumph TR6 Repair Operation Manual” by
British Leyland. I am told this can now be
had in PDF format for an iPhone. For those
not online, we have it in the permanent
collection.
Looking at my shelf, I decided to move some
books over. They sit in my house anyway, but I
would rather they be available to everyone
throughout time.
• “Austin Healey Owner ’s Handbook for
Maintenance & repair of the 6 cylinder
models” – Reprint of Clymer Publicationsnot a grease mark on it

I finished reading our copy of John Macartney’s
“Turn Left at the Pacific”. This is not the great
road novel that “Zen and the Art of
Motorcycle Maintenance” is. The best part of
the story is probably the beginning, when he is
planning the trip, and the restoration of the
Stag by the ISOA. The actually journey has
it’s ups and downs in terms of readability. John
tends to ramble off topic a lot of the time
(tirades against right wing radio, his wife’s
illness, language and accent issues), and then
lose the energy of the journey. Unfortunately,
the time he spends with the DVT is taken up
by another ramble: his difficulty using Twitter.
That said, the pictures and the story itself are
great. His genuine affection for the people he
meets, and giant American trains, shines
through.

Jersey Night at the Sumney
The April GTR theme was “sports jersey
night. Those wearing a jersey earned an
extra point in the ever ferocious
competition for the annual coveted door
prize for the member with the most
points! (Not sure whether that is a threat or a
reward)
The prevalent jersey was a Phillies variant
with the odd duck Lotus Racing and
Suzuki motor cross shirt.
ANNUAL TECH SESSION AT TRIUMPH RESCUE
About 70 car enthusiasts drive up to Barto, PA on a
chilly and damp morning for a tech session and great
lunch
at
“ Tr i u m p h
Re s c u e ” .
http://
www.triumphrescue.com/ 35 DVT’ers were part of the
crowd that included members from the Central PA
Triumph Club, as well as the British Car Club of Lehigh
Valley. Matt and Beth Bakes hosted the tech session on
classic car upholstery, from the does and don’ts to
making sure that new seat kit or carpet set turns out
like a pro did it. Upkeep, repair, replacement and a
Q&A that was very informative. A few classic cars
braved the weather to take the drive, although most cars
around the shop were pretty much of the non-classic
variety.
For those that could not make it, there is a video on the
Delaware Valley Triumph Facebook page, there will also
be a longer segment on the Delaware Valley Triumph
You Tube account, taken by Charlie Frick at the event.
Thanks again to Matt and Beth and the staff of Triumph
Rescue, for hosting the event, and for their work to set-
up the session and pro vide the lunch for the
participants.

DVT Board Meeting
could sign into the web page from Facebook and viceversa.
April 3, 2012
Houlihans Restaurant, Plymouth Meeting PA
Finance – John Anderson not present, no updates
Present: Bob DeLucia, Bob Hunter, Dave Kane, Joe
Lynn, Mike Nitroy and Bruce Schecter
Events – Bruce Schecter indicated that April will be a
busy month. The highlights include the TR-MG rally on
4/29. He encouraged all of the board to urge the
membership to attend the rally. The more DVT
members that participate in the rally the more likely the
chance of retaining the Lucas Cup. Other events of
interest include shows in Smithfield NJ, Elton MD and
Lewes DE. He encouraged members who are attending
events to take a Cars of England flier with them for
advertising. Bruce also said that DVT would purchase a
block of tickets for the Car Club Day with the Trenton
Thunder (minor league baseball) for July 22 and sell
them to the membership at the GTRs. Bruce said he
was still looking for volunteers to lead drives. This
could be coordinated through the Facebook page.
Absent:
John Anderson
A quorum was established and Bob DeLucia convened
the meeting at 0710.
Membership – Currently stands at 197 members. 2012
member renewals are starting to come in. Bob Hunter
said he would write up a notice / reminder to include in
the upcoming newsletter. He was also going to send a
global e-mail reminder out on this topic. New badges
have been distributed to the new members. Anyone
needing a new badge should contact Bob Hunter.
Newsletter - April edition of the newsletter will be
out before the GTR. There is still a sufficient backlog
of articles and new articles continue to stream in. Dave
Kane indicated that he would include a notice in the
upcoming newsletter that he was looking for a new
editor for the 2013-2015 term since he was stepping
down as the newsletter at the end of 2012 when his term
expires.
Website - Joe Lynn indicated that all of the old
newsletters had been uploaded to the DVT website for
viewing. The next related project is to start pulling out
tech articles and indexing them separately. Joe said he
would send a reminder e-mail out to folks reminding
them to update their profile on the website with any
changes such as e-mail addresses, new car acquisition
etc.,. Joe said he was working on putting together a link
between the Facebook and DVT webpage so that you
Bob Hunter is working to organize another Photo
shoot/picnic/wine tasting at the Peace Valley Winery in
Chalfont. Board agreed to tentatively schedule the
event for June 30.
Cars & Motorcycles of England – Next organization
meeting is scheduled for 4/26 at Oakbourne. Board
plans to authorize Mandy Baker to proceed with making
additional trophies for the show once we receive a cost
estimate. Board voted to not proceed with 50 th
anniversary plaques due to the number of marques and
the cost/benefit ration. Bruce indicated that he is still
looking for fire police and EMS support for the show.
Bruce indicated that we may have access to a PA system
from Lou DeFabio for free. He had to discuss specifics
of the PA system with Lou before confirming this.
Board agreed to use the existing road banner for the
CMOE show for one more year given the cost to make a
new one.
