ANYONE WHOSE LIVELIHOOD IS ENHANCED BY “BEING creative” or “having ideas” is, by nature, a cool hunter, a seeker of what’s new and different—the Next Big Thing. Ain’t it so? In fact, not only compensation but our own self-worth is wrapped up in our ability not just to spot these NBTs, but to claim ownership, exploit, and then discard. A few months back, I was very proud of myself for “discovering” a new restaurant near the beach in Miami, not through a referral or magazine or blog, but by riding my bike. Creek 28 is chef Kira Volz’s low-key yet intense restaurant inside the Indian Creek Hotel, an interesting 1928 non-Deco, cypress-ornamented hideaway. (I’ve already gone on about it in my online report from the South Beach Wine & Food Festival.) Once ensconced there and asked where I was staying, I inevitably began by saying, “Well, I doubt you ever heard of it, but....” I remained pleased with myself until checkout time, when one of the hotel’s staff let slip that Bruce Weber had taken over most of the joint for a big photo shoot just before my arrival. So now, if and when the occasion ever arises to recommend my new find, I’m sure the response will be, “Oh, you mean the place in GQ with the nude twins?” NBTs are ephemeral, and they often don’t keep well. Eons ago Tina Brown (whose very existence once seemed predicated on NBT pursuit) won huge NBT props by being the first to have Macy Gray perform, at the fabled Talk magazine launch on Liberty Island. Macy brought down the house—well, field. But when I hired her, just a few seasons later, she seemed comatose when I stopped backstage to give a friendly 10-minute warning. I was alarmed to find the singer’s head, eyes closed, lolling back on her shoulders while a stylist glued sequins one at a time to her platform heels, which she was wearing at the time. It seemed unlikely that even one shoe would become completely sparkly, much less planted onstage, with this mess perched on top. To be fair, she rallied and gave a very lively, if inscrutable, performance. But she was no longer an NBT, and now she’s a has-been. Life as an NBT is just as Hobbes described, “nasty, brutish, and short,” no? NBTs can be anything. A restaurant. A drink. A shoe company. Remember when Jimmy Choo was an NBT? All those rich girls were so glad to have another brand beside Manolo Blahnik to talk about. Sure, there was Sigerson Morrison and Maud Frizon, fine footwear makers, but the only shoe that the dames I knew talked about was Manolo Blahnik. But then that article that everybody read defined Manolo Blahniks as “classy” and Jimmy Choos as “trashy” (validated in no small part by Choo lady Tamara Mellon being romantically linked with Girls Gone Wild smutographer and Richard Johnson bachelor party host Joe Francis). So now we’re back to only one brand again. Blah blah Blahnik. NBT BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER. HOW ELSE to explain being on a panel about new ideas in entertaining, and witnessing my co-panelist demonstrate—irony-free—her newest find: ice cubes made of plastic that light up and go in cocktails, although not in place of real ice cubes, which are still needed. Now I don’t think electronic ice cubes should be considered an idea. But other people seemed to think they were cute. I remember the Messmore & Damon studio, this warehouse in the west 20’s, was the NBT of party spaces for a while. I’ll claim it was my discovery 96 bizbash.com/newyork june/july 2006 until someone comes forward to correct me. It was a giant hangar, filled with weird old cars, dangerous scaffolds, and stuff. I first used the location for the kickoff of the first 7th on Sixth collected menswear shows, sponsored by GQ. What made this blockwide version of Sanford & Son a natural party site was the open floor acreage, where set backdrops were once painted for the Metropolitan Opera. It was one of the only places with a huge flat space, where the canvasses could roll out onto the floor, and the painters walked on them wearing little plastic slippers and with paint brushes attached to long sticks. Something to see. Because I knew that then-mayor Rudy Giuliani loved opera, I mentioned this detail in his carefully delivered invitation. Sure enough, he showed up and seemed delighted to nose around looking at fake bushes and other stage props. In case you didn’t know, in New York, event with mayor = news crews = PR, and this night was no different. So of course we booked the space again for the launch of Time Out New York. This time we had a thousand more people coming, so we were really pushing our luck. Have I mentioned that the place was a firetrap and didn’t have a C of O? (That’s Certificate of Occupancy, an obscure city-issued document that becomes a hell of a lot less obscure when the fire department shows up.) I knew something was afoot when I arrived for a walk-through a few days before the event to find a giant camera crew with lights, backdrops, vans, and, tellingly, giant fans that looked like they belong on the back of an Everglades airboat. If you know about photography, you know what giant photo set fans mean: Annie Leibovitz is in the house. Sure enough, she was there shooting one of her Vanity Fair fold-out covers with a zillion starlets, placed in order of priority from left to right. (You know they trick them all into thinking they’ll be on the real cover, don’t you?) Anyway, despite the fact that I once vacationed with this photographer and her late partner, Susan Sontag, in Mexico (Costa Careyes, great resort) and got to know them a bit (they came to my casita for Easter cocktails), La Leibovitz looked unhappy to see me there with a team in tow. Why? Well, I’m guessing—her general anti-social tendencies aside, it seemed that she, like I, considered Messmore & Damon her secret find, and didn’t want others using it. (By the way, if it’s not clear by now, the presence of a big-time photographer means the NBT is already a BT.) To make a long story short, the Time Out New York party was well attended—a stampede, really—and in the next few months I noticed other firms were booking Messmore & Damon. Sure enough, the next time I called to book, the owner, a super-tall, Kojak-pated fellow with an imposing manner, got on the phone with me to berate me. His career as a site booker was over; some enforcement honchos had gotten wind of all these parties and shut him down. “It’s all your fault,” I remember him saying. I was so proud.
