With jazz, pop, world or rock, this 44th edition has what it takes to satisfy the tastes of all music fans. Stars will share the floodlights with young artists whose talent is exploding and several musicians will be coming back to Montreux. That is the case for Keith Jarrett who, along with Charles Lloyd, offered one of the finest moments of the first edition of the Festival. Yet more than half the musicians will be performing in Montreux for the first time. The Festival renews itself year and the desire to offer surprises and a quality line-up still gives my team and me as much pleasure after 44 years. And for 16 days, it is with the same pleasure that we will share our passion with hundreds of thousands of festivalgoers. Thank you, dear journalists and discerning friends, for sharing this passion with us! No, I’m not tired of it, even though I’m not young anymore. Obviously, with age, you reach certain limits, but I have no worries because I work with a great team! In the future, I would like to focus more on the special projects and looking after the artists. I am particularly drawn to the creative and artistic side of things. Which concerts are you particularly looking forward to this year ? Where shall I start? I’m looking forward to July 4 when Brad Mehldau – an exceptional pianist – will be sharing the stage with the soprano Jessye Norman and those two artists will be breaking down the barriers between jazz, classical music and gospel. On July 9, a very African brand of energy will send the Auditorium Stravinski audience into a frenzy during Angélique Kidjo’s tribute to Miriam Makeba, which will bring together the biggest African music stars of the moment. The return of Keth Jarrett, who played at the first edition of the Festival 44 years ago, is obviously also something I’m very happy about. Then there’s Simply Red, who are coming back as part of their latest tour. Not to mention all the artists who are performing for the first time in Montreux this year, such as Mark Knopfler, Vanessa Paradis, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Nas. The fruitful collaboration between Pepe Lienhard and the Swiss Army Band on Quincy Jones’ birthday in 2008 will continue this year…The concert they gave together in 2008 was a truly wonderful experience. Pepe and I really wanted to work together again. And this year, that desire is taking shape with a joint swing project! That will be a crazy night, which will see artists of very 6 diverse horizons swinging. Nina Hagen, Roger Cicero, Max Herre and Petula Clark are among them. And will Quincy Jones be part of it all ? No. But during the Festival, on July 16, he will perform a project entitled Quincy Jones And The Global Gumbo All-Stars. Most of the musicians it will bring together are those he discovered in Montreux. It goes without saying that, under Quincy’s musical direction, they will offer us an unforgettable evening! The entrance to the Miles Davis Hall has been redesigned. Why ? The fact that the Miles Davis Hall now hosts world music, jazz and blues concerts implies new requirements in terms of reception and comfort. That’s why, this year, we are laying out a lounge area, where people can chill out before, during and after the concerts, which will make it much more pleasant to wait for the doors to open. Our quest for quality is not only demonstrated in the programming but also in the standard of our infrastructure and welcome of festival-goers. « Going Back » to Montreux TIVAL PRE-FES L IA C E SP RT! CONCE exclusive Phil Collins concert On July 1, Phil Collins will recreate the biggest R&B, soul and pop hits of the ’60s. The world-famous star will present his new music project as a European exclusive at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Phil Collins is back! The multi-talented, eight-time Grammy Award-winning British singer, drummer, composer and actor, will honour the Montreux Jazz Festival with an exclusive concert entitled Up Close & Personal: Phil Collins Plays ‘60s Motown and Soul. This musical journey back in time will feature his interpretations of the biggest R&B, soul and pop hits of the ’60s. He will perform the unforgettable classics of the Motown label, a monument in music history that brought the world artists such as The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, The Supremes and Smokey Robinson. In September 2010, Phil Collins is to release his new studio album, the first in eight years, which will feature cover versions only. his only concert, on July 1, a show that will open the 2010 Montreux Jazz Festival. The 44th edition will therefore start a day earlier than announced and will exceptionally last 17 days instead of 16. There is a deep friendship between the pop star, who is performing in Montreux for the sixth time, and Claude Nobs. In 1998, Phil Collins even designed the Festival poster on which he depicted himself playing drums. Commenting on these, the singer said: “My idea was not to bring anything ‘new’ to these already great records, but to try to recreate the sounds and feelings that I had when I first heard them. My intention was to make an ‘old’ record, not a ‘new’ record.” This new project devoted to his youth adds another chapter to Phil Collins’ 40-year career as a rocker, pop star and soundtrack composer. Among his favourite songs, which he interprets with his incomparable voice, feature You Can’t Hurry Love, A Groovy Kind of Love, True Colors, Girl and Blame It On The Sun, not forgetting The Temptations’ smash hit Papa Was A Rolling Stone. Four concerts scheduled in New York at the end of June will give a foretaste of this project. He will be accompanied by 18 musicians, including a five-piece brass section, six backing vocalists and the legendary Funk Brothers of Motown, with bassist Bob Babbitt and guitarists Eddie Willis and Ray Monette. Phil Collins will then come to Europe for what should be 7 Special Projects Auditorium Stravinski ly Friday 9th ju La Francophonie fête l’Afrique «Angélique Kidjo celebrates Mama Africa – A Tribute to Miriam Makeba» Featuring Baaba Maal, Asa, Vusi Mahlasela, Sayon Bamba, Zamo Mbutho, Stella Khumalo and Faith Kekana. An eventful life, a moving career: Miriam Makeba, the former servant girl from Johannesburg, won over international audiences with her incomparable voice and boundless energy. “Mama Africa” as she was affectionately known to her fans, had worldwide success with hits such as Pata Pata, Westwinds and The Click Song. She paid for this success with 31 years in exile, far from her beloved South Africa, for having repeatedly denounced the apartheid regime and putting her voice at the service of human rights. Miriam Makeba finally returned to her native country after receiving a personal invitation from Nelson Mandela. In November 2008, she had a heart attack during a concert in Italy and died the same evening. Reputed African musicians will offer an evening of unforgettable melodies, frenzied rhythms and dance in honour of this unique artist who, until her last breath, combined her artistic and political commitments. At the origin of this project is Angélique Kidjo, an exceptional singer who, since the ’80s has performed regularly at the Montreux Jazz Festival with giants such as Herbie Hancock and Carlos Santana. The Beninese singer will bring together performers such as the Senegalese Baaba Maal, the Nigerian Asa, Vusi Mbutho, Stella Khumalo and Faith Kekan, to pay tribute to the important musical heritage of her South African model. The premiere of this project took place at the Barbican Hall in London and is to be followed by just two other performances. But it is perhaps only at Montreux, on the stage of the Auditorium 8 Stravinksi, that Youssou N’Dour will take part in the event. While the spotlight is on South Africa because of the football World Cup, the Montreux Jazz Festival will offer an exceptional musical event entirely devoted to Africa. july Monday 12th Singin’ and Swingin’ For Claude Nobs, impressed by the musical level and professionalism of Pepe Lienhard’s Swiss Army Band, one thing was sure: after the big band’s performance at Quincy Jones’ birthday event, they had to perform at Montreux again! At the instigation of band leader Pepe Lienhard, who has notably worked with Ute Lemper, Donna Summer and Udo Jürgens, an audacious project will take shape this year, assembling artists from the very different musical horizons of soul, hip hop, pop and punk. This joyful experiment will bring together Petula Clark, Joy Denalane and Max Herre. Roger Cicero will also be there to take care of the first part of the evening, The classy swing, funk and soul-inflected cool of this artist, whose songs are full of irony and wit, is the best guarantee of an event placed entirely under the slogan “Let’s swing!” july Friday 16th Herbie Hancock – The Imagine Project // Quincy Jones And The Global Gumbo All-Stars This year sees Herbie Hancock back in Montreux for the 26th time. In the 44 years of the Festival’s history, it’s a record! Yet each time, the jazz legend manages to surprise and enchant his public. In 2008, he paid tribute to the work of Quincy Jones. A year later, Hancock and Chinese piano virtuoso Lang Lang subjugated the Auditorium Stravinski audience with the world premiere of their joint tour. This year too, the 12-time Grammy Award winner is presenting a unique project, with an album of John Lennon covers recorded with top-class musicians (Vinnie Colaiuta on drums, Greg Philliganes on keyboards and Tal Wilkenfeld, a 24-year-old female bassist of breathtaking talent). Herbie Hancock is perfectly at ease in this type of crossover project, as his Joni Mitchell tribute – which won a Grammy Award for best album of the year in 2007 – proved. Another jazz icon who will perform the same evening is Quincy Jones. Over the years, Jones has met some exceptional musicians in Montreux and those encountered have often developed into friendships. Entitled Quincy Jones And The Global Gumbo All-Stars, this exclusive Montreux event will see him conducting a supergroup that will end the evening in style. 9 Highlights Auditorium Stravinski FRIDAY JULY 2 WEDNESDAY JULY 7 TUESDAY JULY 6 ROXY MUSIC BEN HARPER BILLY IDOL Roxy Music is one of those groups without which the history of recent pop music would have sounded very different. The London band, formed by Bryan Ferry, Phil Manzanera and Andy Mackay, have been working together since the early seventies, and were predecessors of punk, redefined glam, were one of the standard bearers of art rock and were a point of reference for dozens of sounds, from Krautrock to electronic. One of the great icons of contemporary pop ! Combining shuddering, groove-laden funky soul and folky handcrafted acoustics, singer/songwriter Ben Harper enjoyed cult status during the course of the ‘90s before gaining wider attention toward the decade’s end. Harper continued to explore different musical textures into the 21st century, enjoying a solid fan base at home and a considerable amount of fame in Europe, where was named 2003’s «Artist of the Year» by Rolling Stone. Along with Duran Duran, Billy Idol was one the first pop/rock artists to achieve massive success in the early ‘80s due to a then brand-new U.S. television network, MTV. Punk and provocative, he released several successful solo albums and singles, including the chart topper «White Wedding». He is today one of the mythical rock musician and proves on stage his reputation of a «musical phenomenon» SATURDAY JULY 3 THURSDAY JULY 8 SUNDAY JULY 4 NORAH JONES MASSIVE ATTACK JESSYE NORMAN Sultry vocalist and pianist Norah Jones is known for her unique blend of jazz and traditional vocal pop with hints of bluesy country and contemporary folk. She will perform at the Stravinski Hall for the second time, following her unforgettable concert in 2007. The pioneering force behind the rise of trip-hop, Massive Attack were among the most innovative and influential groups of their generation; their hypnotic sound - a darkly sensual and cinematic fusion of hip-hop rhythms, soulful melodies, dub grooves, paving the way for such acclaimed artists as Portishead, Sneaker Pimps, Beth Orton, and Tricky, himself a Massive Attack alumnus. They’ve released their highly expected 5th album «Heligoland» beginning of 2010 A prominent American soprano, Jessye Norman started singing spirituals at the age of four in a Baptist Church. She is one of the most admired contemporary opera singers and recitalists, a true dramatic soprano with a majestic stage presence. She comes to Montreux to perform her new show «My Life. My Song Gospel and Spirituals, songs by D. Ellington and G. Gershwin». THURSDAY JULY 15 SUNDAY JULY 11 SATURDAY JULY 17 MARK KNOPFLER KEITH JARETT KATIE MELUA Since the breakup of the mythical band Dire Straits in 1995, genius guitarist, composer and performer Mark Knopfler has put out six solo albums. The most recent, the magnificent Get Lucky, released in September 2009, immediately won over the public and media. On July 15, Knopfler will set the Auditorium Stravinski ablaze. The rock legend’s first appearance at the Festival is an occasion not to be missed ! «Keith Jarrett’s trio, if it has not already achieved it, is now reaching institutional status, it is music making at the highest level, and since their first sessions in 1983, the trio have remained a benchmark of excellence in jazz, not only in the art of the piano trio but also the art of improvisation. … You sense the tension but also the joy of music making.» Stuart Nicholson, Jazzwise After her concert at the Miles Davis Hall in 2008, 25 years old vocalist Katie Melua will hit the Stravinski Hall this year with her new and fourth album «House». «In addition to being inspired by the values in music from the past, I wanted to embrace the future. First, by accepting the values that are treasured more in music today and by projecting them forward.» SATURDAY JULY 10 WEDNESDAY JULY 14 TUESDAY JULY 13 VANESSA PARADIS SIMPLY RED DIANA KRALL Vanessa Paradis first hit the charts in 1987 at the tender age of 14. Her single «Joe le Taxi» spent 11 weeks at the top of the French charts, and proved an international success as well. She recorded two albums in Paris before traveling to New York in 1992 to record her self-titled English-language debut, with one-time boyfriend Lenny Kravitz as producer. Paradis returned to music once again in 2007 with the release of her fifth full-length album, Divinidylle. This year Mick Hucknall celebrates 25 years of unbroken service with the band he founded, fronted and named. Simply Red emerged out of the streets and clubs of Manchester in the postpunk era of 1984 and within 12 months were riding in the British charts. Their concert at the Stravinski Hall is part of the «Farewell Final Tour». Born in Canada, to a musical family, Grammy awarded pianist and singer Diana Krall grew up absorbing music that guided her future growth. In 1993, she released her debut album on a small Canadian independent label. As moving as her last album «Quiet Nights» is - deriving from Krall’s feelings for Brazil and bossa novas - the singer is not shy in admitting that its sensuality is as much about her home life. “It’s my love letter to my husband – just an intimate, romantic album.” 11 Interview with Lori Immi Fighera In charge of the Miles Davis Hall Programme Lori Immi joined the Festival team in 1997 as a production assistant and has been responsible for the Miles Davis Hall programme since 2003. For this former gymnast, putting together a programme that combines quality with surprise elements sometimes requires considerable intellectual acrobatics. The programme of the Miles Davis Hall is extremely varied this year. Which evenings are you particularly looking forward to ? In my programming, I always seek to present new acts in an interesting and coherent way. This year, I’m impatient to see the concert of Gil Scott-Heron, who, after a long hiatus, has produced a superb new and very modern-sounding album I’m New Here. On the same evening, the public will see Erykah Badu, so it’s a really exceptional musical event! Many artists will be performing in Montreux for the first time, for example, Nas & Damian Marley, and Charlotte Gainsbourg – who will be giving an exclusive Swiss performance. Then there’s Julian Casablancas, Mumford & Sons, Janelle Monae, Chromeo, Yacht, Beach House, Dead Weather and Broken Bells. I’d also like to draw the public’s attention to the concert of De La Soul, who are celebrating their 30-year career at the Montreux Jazz Festival with a special instrumental project. The programming of the Miles Davis Hall has evolved in recent years. There’s now world music, jazz, blues and, increasingly frequently, established and very well-known artists. Is that right ? Yes, absolutely. The integration of world music, jazz and blues has given a boost to the programme of the Miles Davis Hall. It has rarely been so varied. The venue has a 2500 capacity, so we need musicians who are well-known and likely to fill it. But, like last year, emerging artists will perform in the first part of the evening. An impor- 12 tant objective of my programming is to allow the public to discover artists they’re not familiar with. In 2007, Swiss Sophie Hunger was one of those discoveries. Today, everybody’s talking about her. She’s become highly successful internationally and will be coming to the Festival for the third time – this time as the headline act. She has immense talent. She first came to the Montreux Jazz Festival for an evening with Fauve, Raphelson and the Lausanne Sinfonietta. The year after, she supported Camille and Yael Naim. And this year, she is headlining! She is really forging a brilliant and impressive career. New A facelift for the entrance and foyer of the Miles Davis Hall The entrance and foyer of the Miles Davis Hall have been redesigned to satisfy festival-goers’ needs and improve the quality of our welcome and infrastructure. The Miles Davis Hall, with its capacity of 2500 spectators, is the Festival’s second biggest concert hall and hosts up to 35,000 people every year. An important transformation of the infrastructures is announced for 2010, as the entrance to the hall is to be redesigned and given a foyer. The organisation of jazz, blues and world music concerts in the Miles Davis Hall means that a different infrastructure is required. In addition, the former entrance gave rise to long queues, particularly when the concerts were sold old. By redesigning the entrance and equipping it with a large foyer, the Festival hopes to offer its guests more comfort and improve the quality of its reception. The foyer will be equipped with seating, tables and a bar, and the Miles Davis Hall will be accessed through four entrances, which will reduce waiting time and allow a better distribution of the public in the venue. A giant screen will show concerts in the foyer before, during and after the performances. As in the Auditorium Stravinski, festival-goers will be able to stay in the foyer and enjoy refreshments without missing what is happening in the hall. A cloakroom will be set up at the entrance. 41 programme. The new free club will not only offer house, but also a wide range of electronic dance music. WORDS AND FIGURES - Surface of the new entrance to the foyer: 400 m2 - Bar with a surface area of 10 m2 and various types of seating arrangements - 4 entrances to the Miles Davis Hall - 2 flat screens and a giant screen for live screenings of the concerts - 1 mixing table for DJs - 1 cloakroom The new entrance is located opposite the gardens of the Montreux Palace, where the MDH Club entrance used to be. The MDH Club, which offered free admission and presented well-known DJs from around the world until the early hours of the morning, will be replaced by the new entrance and foyer of the Miles Davis Hall. However, a vast programme of free electronic music will continue to be offered, as Lori Immi and Michele Catanese will now plan the Studio 13 Highlights Miles Davis Hall TUESDAY JULY 6 SUNDAY JULY 4 FRIDAY JULY 2 JAMIE LIDELL CHARLOTTE GAINSBOURG AIR By 2008, Jamie had become « Jim »—building on the foundations of « Multiply », his first album, to construct a warm, invitingly plush bordello of funk, disco, grooves and gospel; with secret chambers of poignant soul. Now it’s 2010, and Jamie returns with « Compass » is his most eclectic album yet. It’s got funk in spades, it rocks, it pops, it’s sweet, angry, hard, soulful and soft, often within the span of a single track. I.R.M. is the new album by the actress Charlotte Gainsbourg. For her third record, she has collaborated with the american Beck Hansen, one of the most prolific and talented musicians of his generation. Together, they created a unique album, sometimes bright and elegant, sometimes dark and disturbing. Internationally revered French electronic pop duo AIR, Jean-Benoit Dunckel and Nicolas Godin, released their fifth studio album «Love 2» , the follow-up to 2007’s acclaimed «Pocket Symphony». They will play at the Miles Davis Hall for the second time. THURSDAY JULY 8 MONDAY JULY 5 PACO DE LUCIA JULIAN CASABLANCAS GIL SCOTT-HERON 25 albums released, hundreds of awards and the consensus of the critics regarding the spectacular musical revolution Pace de Lucia has instigated, all go towards making him the universal artist that he is. He transformed the Flamenco guitar from a marginal instrument into a worldwide phenomenon. Simply by introducing the cajon drum, the bass and percussion, he ays the foundation of the current Flamenco idiom. Julian Casablancas is better known as the lead singer/songwriter of the Strokes. He began recording his solo debut album in 2008 with producer Jason Lader and Bright Eyes’ Mike Mogis «Phrazes for the Young» which featured denser, more free-flowing songs than the Strokes’ albums. This album was released in fall 2009. SUNDAY JULY 11 Is Gil Scott-Heron - as they’ve said about everyone from the Last Poets to Lou Reed - the founding father of rap? No at all. Just the smart rap. Just the soulful, socially aware, verbally dexterous style of artists like Public Enemy, Mos Def, and Kanye West. But this songwriter is also well represented in the sharp, honest songwriters in today’s indie- and folk-rock margins and there’s the slightly ominous possibility, hinted at in the second chorus of “I’m New Here,” that Gil Scott-Heron now, after a 40-year-career, may be hipper than any of them. FRIDAY JULY 9 SATURDAY JULY 17 SATURDAY JULY 10 TORI AMOS COCOROSIE NAS MARLEY Tori Amos grew up playing the piano and singing. In her teens she played piano bars, in her twenties she joined a rock band in California, then began recording records in the U.K. on her own. As a solo artist, she got attention in 1991 for her album Little Earthquakes, and she has continued to produce successful records that are usually complex and personal, with musical influences ranging from classical to pop and rock. CocoRosie are two sisters, Sierra and Bianca, who after many years apart, started making music together, on a whim in Paris in 2003, Their first album, «La Maison de mon Rêve», was released in 2004 and immediately won the heart of tens of thousands of music fans everywhere, followed by their second album, «Noah’s Ark» (2005) and «The Adventures of Gosthorse and Stillborn» (2007). Hip-hop icon since the early 1990s, Nas has since gone on to sell over 20 million albums worldwide over the span of his legendary career. The youngest son of Reggae legend Bob Marley and Grammy awarded, Damian “JR Gong” Marley was heralded by Rolling Stone as one of the ‘Top 10 new artists to watch,’ since the release of „Welcome To Jamrock.“ THURSDAY JULY 15 FRIDAY JULY 16 SUNDAY JULY 11 PHOENIX DE LA SOUL ERYKAH BADU The French group Phoenix draw elements from their eclectic ‘80s upbringing to arrive at a satisfying synthesis of rock and synthesizers. Vocalist Thomas Mars, bassist Deck d’Arcy, and guitarist Christian Mazzalai were a garage band based out of Mars’ house in the suburbs of Paris. Their last album, the widely acclaimed «Wolfgang Amadues Phoenix», was released in 2009. In 1987, a trio known as De La Soul formed from Long Island, NY roots and changed the landscape of hip-hop as we knew it. Now, for over 20 years they have rocked us with their De La songs full of inscrutable samplings, whimsically irreverent lyrics, social commentary, light rhythm and laid back rhymes. They have gained respect within and outside the hip hop community with their contributions to rap, as well as jazz, funk, soul and alternative genres. The talented Erykah Badu, often compared to Billie Holiday for her languorous voice, has collaborated with such artists as D’Angelo or the Roots. She comes back in Montreux this year to present her latest relase «New Amerykah Part Two : Return of the Ankh», with which she defers to the fickle stew of emotions, laments, aspirations, and rants that strong spirits are made of, the same stew of naked passion that has made her entire body of work such a visceral success. 15 Interview with Stéphanie-Aloysia Moretti Foundation Montreux Jazz 2 project manager Since 2007, events such as workshops, archive screenings, music competitions and premieres have been organised during the Festival under the aegis of the Foundation 2. Stéphanie-Aloysia Moretti, who has been collaborating with the Festival organisation for 21 years, is in charge of these projects. The objective of the Foundation 2 is to promote cultural exchanges. What are the conclusions of the past few years ? Excellent. The diversity of the projects reflects public demand and interest. Such a multidisciplinary approach makes it possible to satisfy the different tastes of festival-goers. We think culture requires an open mind and curiosity and is surely the best way to find out about and understand social changes. What are the projects lined up in 2010 ? I’d like to point out two highlights. First, there are the events that draw attention to Montreux’s important cultural heritage. For example, the pianist and mathematician Yaron Herman will be performing under the label Made in Montreux. His improvisations are reinterpretations of the works of Maurice Ravel that the composer created while he was staying in Montreux during a period of intense exchange with Igor Stravinsky. Secondly, some events take up a theme that has been recurrent in recent years, which is Eastern Delights. A gala concert at Chillon Castle devoted to the wonderful compositions of Chopin will break down the barriers between jazz and classical music. Also, a musical reading of Nabokov’s Lolita will take place in the reading room of the Montreux Palace, a hotel steeped 16 in history, where the writer lived for 30 years. Finally, there will be two themed evenings at Parc Vernex; Russian Trends and Polish Special. These offer a plenty of opportunities for discovering the rich culture of Eastern Europe. Which event is particularly special to you ? The musical reading of the texts of Boris Vian, who was not only a writer, but also a jazz musician. It will be performed by students from the Riviera music conservatory. But there will also be music workshops presented by scientists – a chance to discover music in another way! The activities of the Fondation 2 will be presented from June 23 to 25 at the Swiss Cultural Centre in Paris. How did this collaboration come about ? The new managers of the centre and Arnaud Robert, the head of musical programming, were interested in our events and gave us carte blanche for three days – an invitation we accepted with pleasure. On June 23, the winners of the 2008 edition of Tremplin Lémanique, a competition for musicians from the Lake Geneva region, will perform on the outdoor stage on Place de la Mairie in the 3rd arrondissement. On June 24, Colin Vallon and Gabriel Zuffrey, two young Swiss pianists who received a prize at Montreux, will give a concert. Finally, on June 25, Creations SAMEDI 3 JUILLET / 19h SATURDAY JULY 3 / 7 pm there will be two pianists: Yaron Herman, who will offer his mix of jazz, classical music and pop and give a taster of his concert in Montreux, and the Cuban Harold Lopez Nussa, who won the piano competition and is currently on a very successful European tour. The winners of the music competitions feature on a collective CD and go on tour together. Will that be the case in 2010 too ? Of course. That cultural exchange is important to us and we are setting up the tour. The 2009 winners came from all over the world: the singer is from the United States, the guitarist from Hungary and the two winning pianists are from Georgia and Azerbaidjan. Their common language is music and, believe me, they understand each other perfectly! The reading will be accompanied by a specific musical creation and will take place under the chandeliers of the Music Room at the Montreux Palace, where Nabokov savoured moments of pleasure during the 30 years he lived at the Palace. In 1967, he wrote the Russian translation of Lolita there. George Sand used the term “blue note” to speak about Chopin’s variations and compositions. He was the first to improvise and use his country’s traditional musical influences, notably in his Mazurkas. It therefore seems only natural to invite his young compatriot Leszek Mozdzer to demonstrate that music can cross barriers of style. BORIS VIAN L’ÉCUME DES JOURS: MUSICAL READING CARTE BLANCHE AROUND RAVEL BY YARON HERMAN Find out more in the Made in Montreux focus Students from the Montreux-Vevey-Riviera music conservatory and Manufacture, Frenchspeaking Switzerland’s University of Dramatic Arts, have rehearsed together the texts and the standards to which the book refers. A fine collaboration between two artistic disciplines and a superb way of experimenting with jazz using words and notes. Leszek Mozdzer 18 Ravel was fascinated by the pioneers of jazz and said: “You Americans take jazz too lightly. You seem to see it as music that is worthless, vulgar and ephemeral. I believe it will give birth to the national music of the United States.” He introduced touches of jazz into his works…perhaps those he composed when he was staying in Montreux and seeing Stravinsky regularly. Yaron Herman Romero Britto designs the 2010 poster The works of Romero Britto express the joy of living, joviality and vitality. A native of Brazil, he grew up with eight brothers and sisters in Recife and went on to become one of pop art’s best-known artists. His paintings and sculptures skilfully combine cubism, pop art and grafitti elements. Britto’s connection with the Festival goes back more than 10 years. In 1999, he designed the poster for the 33rd edition and the logo for Montreux Sounds. Like the rest of his work, the 44th Montreux Jazz Festival poster, which depicts a boy playing guitar with his dog, is very colourful. “I want my works to be music in the eyes of the person who looks at them,” Britto explains. “The friendship, love and passion that I experienced at the Festival were my sources of inspiration. I feel very honoured that Claude Nobs asked me to design the Festival poster a second time.” Romero Britto lives in Miami and is actively involved with several charity organisations and cultural foundations such as the Montreux Jazz Festival Foundation 2. Last year, he set up a painting workshop for children in Parc Vernex, on the Festival site. The works, painted to the sound of Brazilian music, were auctioned and the proceeds went towards funding the activities of the Foundation 2. This year too, several events with Romero Britto are planned. For further information about Romero Britto, consult his official website: www.britto.com Since 1967, some very famous artists have created the official Festival posters and these original works quickly became collector’s items. Among the artists who have given a free rein to their creativity for the Festival include Jean Tinguely, Julian Opie, Niki De Saint Phalle, Toni Ungerer and Max Bill, as well as David Bowie and Phil Collins. In 1986, pop art icons Keith Haring and Andy Warhold combined their talents to design the poster. 19 Practical Services and offers for everyone A round-up of the services offered by the Festival to ensure that music goes hand in hand with comfort and accessibility. Jazz invades the park from the early afternoon, then it’s over to other musical genres. A programme of rock, pop, funk, reggae and world music ensures there is something for everybody. The groups scheduled are mostly unknown to the general public but are making their names as emerging artists. The chance to relive, free of charge, the sounds and images of some of the mythical evenings that have marked the different editions of the Festival is a gift for you, dreamed up by Nagra Kudelski Group with the organisers of the MJF and Montreux Sounds. Groove and emotion will be packed into a programme that will be unveiled soon, along with the venue of the screenings. We’ll give you a clue: Montreux Jazz on Screen will create an event in one of the busiest and liveliest Festival spots ! Special days highlight themes or countries by devoting part of their programmes to them. Here are a few examples: - Eastern delights: two evenings dedicated to Russian and Polish music on July 7 and 12 respectively. Get ready to enter the musical universe of the contemporary East.; - Blind Test: The Larry Woodley Band will perform a live blind test for the Parc Vernex public. Those who are quickest to name the titles of the songs take away prizes that include concert tickets or T-shirts. - Brazil: In keeping with tradition, Brazilian music takes pride of place on Saturday, July 10, with, notably, four bands presenting various music trends. - Francophone Fridays: Music in the Park and the organisers of the Montreux Francophone Summit are offering a series of groups from French-speaking countries, including France, Senegal, Tahiti, in anticipation of the summit that is taking place in October in Montreux. 22 NIGHTLIFE The Montreux Jazz Café and Studio 41 will of course continue to bring you the latest sounds. TREMPLIN LÉMANIQUE This year, the competition Tremplin Lémanique is open to all Electro artists living in the French districts of L’Ain and Haute-Savoie or in the Swiss cantons of Geneva, Vaud and Valais. The final will take place at the Montreux Jazz Café. First prize: CHF 5000 .Information and entry: www.montreuxjazz.com (deadlilne May 15) More information at: www.myspace.com/tremplinlemanique PARMIGIANI PRESENTS MONTREUX JAZZ WORKSHOPS There is a rare bond between some musicians and their public. How else can these remarkable moments of intimacy be explained? The principle is simple : the artists are given a free hand to meet the public. A technical demonstration, a debate, an explanation of their own career path - they all choose their own way of expressing themselves. The workshop hosts are artists featuring on the official programme and they do not receive a fee. It is difficult to know whether it is the musicians or the public who appreciate these moments the most. AKADEMIA www.conseilduleman.org CONCOURS The voice and piano competitions are a great opportunity for young professional musicians to let their talent explode and to meet each other. The juries of both categories are composed of well-known international musicians. The winners form a band – Montreux Jazz on the Road – which tours Europe’s biggest jazz festivals in London, Montreal, Vienna and Umbria and, of course, Montreux. Last year’s winners will open for Norah Jones’ in the Auditorium Stravinski on July - Bösendorfer Solo Piano Competition Winner 2009 (ex aequo) Isfar Sarabsky (Azerbaijan) Beka Gochiashvili (Georgie) - Shure Jazz Voice Competition Winner 2009 Aubrey Logan (USA) The didactic movement that started in 2008 is taken one stepfurther this year. Every day, in the early afternoon, workshops are devoted to encounters between music and science, in partnership with Geneva University and the Ecole Polytechnique Federale of Lausanne (EPFL). Without seeking to take away the mystery or beauty of music, different perspectives are explored, allowing participants and scientists to reflect on the relationship between the emotions and the body. YOUNG PEOPLE’S ACTIVITIES This year, activities for young people will have a prominent place at the Festival. Eugène is coming to tell of the tribulations of a Romanian teenager who emigrated to Switzerland in the ’70s; the students of the Montreux-Vevey-Riviera conservatory and the Manufacture (Frenchspeaking Switzerland’s drama school) are concocting a musical reading of extracts from the Boris Vian novel “L’écume des Jours” and Young Planet regulars will be presenting their work on the Parc Vernex stage. And perhaps all this will be accompanied by a journey into the land of robots.
