Heavier isn’t necessarily better
W
e know that
maintaining
muscle mass is
important to good health,
especially as we age.
But is it really obligatory
to lift heavy weights to
keep muscles in shape?
Not necessarily, says a
new study conducted at
McMaster University in
Ontario, Canada, which
shows that effective
muscle building also
can be achieved by
using lighter weights
and pumping until the
muscles in the targeted
area are fatigued.
“Rather than grunting
and straining to lift heavy
weights, you can grab
something much lighter,
but you have to lift until
you can’t lift it anymore,”
says Stuart Phillips,
associate professor
of kinesiology at the
university.
“We’re convinced that
growing muscle means
stimulating your muscle
to make new muscle
proteins, a process in
the body that over time,
accumulates into bigger
muscles.”
The new paradigm
contradicts current gym
dogma and is welcome
news for those who
cannot lift heavy weights
or simply don’t want to.

be predictable

Your safety and the
image of bicyclists
depend on you. You
have the same rights
and duties as drivers.
Obey traffic signals
and stop signs.
Ride with traffic;
use the rightmost
lane headed in the
direction you are
going.
Make your intentions
clear to motorists
and other road users.
Ride in a straight line
and don’t swerve
between parked
cars. Signal turns,
and check behind you
well before turning or
changing lanes.
Ride where drivers
can see you; wear
bright clothing. Use
a front white light
and red rear light and
reflectors at night or
when visibility is poor.
Make eye contact
with drivers. Don’t
ride on sidewalks.

Midwest In The Raw:
Exploring ‘Flyover Country’
A
lthough some people
lump America’s Midwest
into what is known as
‘Flyover Country,’ they
are ignoring the fact
that there is a lot more to see in the
landlocked states than what can be
spied from a porthole-sized plane
window 35,000 feet in the air. The East
and West coasts aren’t the only places
where natural beauty abounds – nor is
it the only area you can find stretches
of stunning shoreline. Take a chance
on The Heartland and see for yourself
what Mother Nature has generously
gifted the region.
Minnesota’s Boundary Waters
Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe
Area Wilderness: Named by National
Geographic Traveler magazine as
one of the “50 Places of a Lifetime,”
Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe
Area Wilderness (BWCAW or BWCA)
is a must-see northern destination for
people who want to experience the
upper Midwest in its purest form.
The forested area is spread across
more than 1 million acres in
northeastern Minnesota, and boasts
more than 1,500 miles of canoe
routes and portages through unspoiled
wilderness. It’s no surprise visitors go
for days without seeing other hikers
and paddles – only the occasional
moose, bear and wolf. Canoeing
season in the BWCAW runs from May
to September.
Southern Illinois, Shawnee National
Forest offers visitors the best of the
Prairie State’s abundant woodlands.
With literally hundreds of miles of
hiking and horseback riding trails
winding through the pine and hardwood
trees, there is no doubt you could

Iowa’s Effigy Mounds National
Monument near the Driftless Area:
More than 200 animal-shaped mounds
created by Native Americans thousands
of years ago are preserved in Effigy
Mounds National Monument.
These bird, reptile and bear-shaped
earthworks serve as pristine
archaeological examples of a
prehistoric Midwest civilization. The
mounds are located in the northeast
region of Iowa where you’ll find more
than the flat landscape for which the
state is notorious. The Driftless Area
refers to the distinct topography left
intact by escaping the glacial retreat
some 500,000 years ago. Abrupt slopes
and crags scatter the area and remain a
cooler temperature in the summer due
to chilled air pushed out of sinkholes
and fissures from cold underground
water reservoirs.

however, make it a point to see the
forest’s popular Garden of the Gods
Wilderness. The rocky overlook
speckled with ancient sandstone
formations sits above the forest and
offers mile-long views of the land
awash with leafy green shades.
Wisconsin’s Door County Peninsula
in the Great Lakes Region: No trip
to the Midwest would be complete
without spending some time in the
Great Lakes area. The limestoneencrusted Door County Peninsula lies
in Lake Michigan.

A new study at Indiana

that how tidy we keep

indicate how fit we
are. That conclusion
was based on an
examination of the

998 urban AfricanAmericans, ages 49

correlation between
the interior condition,

participant’s residence
and their level of
