What is KSEA?
KSEA is a 35-year-old non-profit national-level professional organization. It is open for participation to all Korean-Americans who have
college degrees in science and engineering fields and cherish the heritage of Korean culture.
The KSEA’s objectives are to:
- Promote the application of science and technology for the general welfare of society;
- Foster international cooperation especially between the US and Korea;
- Help Korean-American Scientists and Engineers develop their full career potential.
KSEA has more than 20 chapters and 13 technical groups covering all major branches of science and engineering. Since its birth in
1971, KSEA has been recognized as the main representative organization promoting the common interests of Korean-American scientists and engineers toward meeting the objectives mentioned above.
KSEA particularly welcomes participation from 1.5th-Generation, 2nd-Generation, and 3rd-Generation Korean-American scientists and
engineers including the mixed-race and adoptee communities. KSEA promotes helping younger-generation Korean-Americans to be
aware of the rapid advances in science and engineering occurring both inside and outside of the US. Especially, it is helping to create
opportunities for Young Generation members to interact with talented scientists and engineers in Korea.
KSEA conducts the following annual activities among others:
- US-Korea Conference (UKC) on Science, Technology, and Entrepreneurship.
- Young-Generation Forum and Technical & Leadership Conference.
- National Mathematics Competition (NMC) in a nation wide level, and Mathematics & Science Olympiads in a local level.
- Annual KSEA Scholarships.
- Publication of KSEA Letters.
- Local and Regional Activities by Local Chapters (Conferences, Seminars, and Picnics).

Dear UKC Participants, Speakers, KSEA Members, and Friends:
My warmest welcome to everyone attending the UKC 2006!
For over ten years, the US-Korea Conference, co-organized by KSEA, KOFST and KUSCO, has successfully served to
promote scientific and technological collaborations among scientists, engineers, and educators from the US and Korea.
Following tradition, the UKC2006 Organizing Committee has produced a comprehensive and engaging conference. We
are very proud to present a high-quality technical program, covering a wide spectrum of science and technology topics,
with more than 400 speakers from the US and Korea. Your strong support and active participation have made the
UKC2006 a record-breaking event. Not only has the total number of papers to be presented nearly doubled, but the total
numbers of symposiums/forums organized, committee members involved, attendees, and sponsor donations have far
exceeded all expectations. In addition, an impressive roster of distinguished speakers has been assembled for the
Opening Ceremony and Plenary sessions.
For the first time, the UKC2006 conference management system was transformed into a seamless on-line process for
abstract and paper submission, conference registration, hotel reservation, and other services. We have also witnessed
the US-Korea Conference evolving into an international forum by recognizing many participants from the US, Korea, and
other parts of the World.
Generous sponsorships from many industrial companies and research organizations from the US and Korea have also
signified that the US-Korea Conference is an important venue to discuss scientific and technological collaboration across
the Pacific.
Our Local Arrangement Committee consisting of KSEA NY Metropolitan and NJ Chapters, and KASBP members has

Kang, the Korean-American Scientists & Engineers Association, distinguished participants, honored guests, ladies and
gentlemen,
It is my great honor to deliver the welcoming address here at the opening ceremony of the "US-Korea Conference on
Science, Technology, and Entrepreneurship" so-called UKC 2006.
First of all, on behalf of the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies I sincerely welcome all of you far
from Korea, the United States and other countries. I would also like to express my sincere appreciation to KSEA for its
hosting and excellent organization of this Conference.
As we are well aware, KSEA is well recognised as an organization representing all Korean-American scientists and engineers throughout the United States. It has played a pivotal role since its erection in 1971 not only in enhancing friendships among Korean-American scientists and engineers but also in promoting cooperation between Korea and the
United States. And UKC, the annual technical conference of KSEA has made a great contribution for more than a dozen
years to exchanging technical information, sharing ideas and formulating cooperative network among Korean scientists
and engineers.
Distinguished participants, honored guests, ladies and gentlemen,
I am very glad to see that UKC has grown year by year into an international conference in scope and scale. UKC 2006 in
particular, covers almost all the important technical fields including advanced materials, aerospace, bio, energy, food, IT,
microelectronics, mechanical engineering and manufacturing. More than 400 papers are expected to present on significant research findings, R&D trends, and future prospects in such areas. Women in Science & Engineering and Young Professional Forum will be also proceeded in parallel.
I strongly believe that this Conference will bring a lot of meaningful discussions and fruitful results, and open the new era
for cooperation among Korean scientists and engineers, leading to the closer cooperative tie between Korea and the
United States.
As you all may agree, Korean-American scientists and engineers are precious asserts for Korea and the United States as
well. The importance of their cooperative network among themselves and with Korea cannot be overemphasized. And
UKC is a powerful vehicle paving the way for the cooperative network.
Distinguished participants, honored guests, ladies and gentlemen,
I see the possibility that UKC will become a international arena which provides with great opportunities for exchanging
ideas, sharing views, and discussing new businesses, bringing all ethnic Korean scientists, engineers, and businessman
not only from Korea and the United States but also from all over the countries. Of course many multinational corporations
could join this Conference and show their business for cooperation with Korea.

The Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies will continue to support UKC and co-host with KSEA. And
also a lot of efforts will be made to make this Conference be a highly renowned gathering like a Davos Forum for all ethnic Korean scientists, engineers and businessman.
In closing, I would like to extend my warmhearted gratitude for the dedicated efforts of the UKC 2006 organizing committee members, President Sung-Kwon Kang, KSEA and KSEA Secretariat in preparing this wonderful Conference. Lastly I
sincerely hope you all enjoy this gathering, bearing fruitful results and strengthening friendships with each other.

UKC2006 Information
The annual technical conference of KSEA, called “US-Korea Conference on Science, Technology, and Entrepreneurship
(UKC)”, is the most important and visible activity of KSEA. The main objective of UKC is to promote US-Korea cooperation in advancing science and technology. The Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies (KOFST) and the
Korean-US Science Cooperation Center (KUSCO) are the co-organizers. UKC2006 is sponsored by many industrial
companies and research organizations. Annually, 400-600 scientists and engineers from the US and Korea have attended
the conference.
