Rollins Chief Executive Officer embracing those in need At Community Health Systems (“CHS”), our associates are the heart and soul of our organization. Whether they are engaging in direct patient care, or performing one of the many necessary behind-the-scenes duties, our associates consistently embody the compassionate and giving nature on which our organization was founded. Through their daily efforts and commitment to patient wellbeing, they have built a well-defined legacy of caring that is present in all aspects of their lives. Each year, all of CHS’s member organizations identify groups or programs in their local communities that can benefit from their support. In the past, member organizations have hosted food drives, provided much-needed medical supplies, and discovered ways to improve health care options for the elderly, such as adopting state-of-the art and easy-touse technologies. This year, our member organizations continued that tradition of community support, finding worthy causes and providing the necessary Mark A. Waldrop Chief Operating Officer manpower, supplies and donations to help those causes succeed. In addition, each member organization nominated deserving associates — individuals who give selflessly of their time, talent and resources to improve the lives and well-being of others — to be recognized for their volunteerism outside of CHS. For example, Merian Robinson, a staff pharmacist at ElderCare Pharmacy, has based her life on helping those less fortunate. Nearly 20 years ago, Merian began caring for a man with special needs. Finding him almost by accident, she couldn’t look the other way, and instead, she willingly embraced his needs. Today, she continues to support him spiritually, emotionally and oftentimes financially. Her dedication to him, in addition to her involvement with many other important causes, is both profound and inspiring. We applaud Merian’s tremendous spirit of giving. Like Merian, our annual report is filled with stories of associates who give of themselves to help others. I wish to congratulate and thank each of the associates nominated for this important recognition and for embracing those in need. In addition to acknowledging these uplifting stories, I am pleased to introduce the newest member of the CHS family: Steward Health Services (“SHS”). Created to complement CHS’s system of health-related organizations, SHS presently focuses on hospice and home health care needs. Through SHS we look forward to enhancing our ability to touch the communities we serve. While CHS continues to grow, I am pleased that our dedication to the communities we serve remains a constant and identifiable part of our organization’s desire to embrace those in need. We celebrate this spirit of giving and embrace the legacy of caring that is visible in the daily efforts of our associates. Respectfully yours, Ronnie D. Rollins, Chief Executive Officer Lorraine T. But, for Merian Robinson, a staff pharmacist for the organization for the past six years, her level of care and involvement goes beyond everyday duties and patients, extending into her personal life and convictions. Nearly 20 years ago, when Merian was a pharmacist at a local grocery chain, she met a young homeless man named Terry. Each night when she worked, she noticed Terry would buy a few canned goods with the spare change he had and ask workers to heat them up in the store’s microwave. Once the manager learned about this practice, he put an end to it, forcing Terry to eat cold, canned food. Merian could not bear this treatment, so she began heating “I enjoy working with the younger generation and guiding them to make the right choices.” — Merian Robinson 3 Merian Robinson Terry’s food in the pharmacy and struck up a unique friendship with him. “Terry is special, so he needs a little extra attention and help,” Merian says. “He tries very hard, but he often gets taken advantage of, so I knew I had to step in and take care of him.” After learning that Terry was living in his car in a local church parking lot — a situation the church abruptly ended — Merian allowed him to park in front of her house while she came up with a plan. Speaking with his sister who lived out of state, Merian learned that Terry tried to find work, going on more than 50 interviews with no success. At the same time, his sister tried to get him Social Security benefits, but was denied. “I prayed about Terry’s situation, and it led me to try again to get him Social Security benefits,” Merian says. “After much research, taking him for doctor evaluations, and filling out the proper paperwork, I finally helped get him approved.” With her newfound success and an income for Terry, Merian was able to help him find a small apartment that he shares with another gentleman. Managing his finances, Merian makes sure Terry’s bills are paid monthly, and that he receives a little spending money each month. In the beginning, Terry would often come up short for necessities, but Merian always stepped in and gave him the extra money he needed. With Merian’s help, Terry now has learned to manage his income better, and he rarely asks her for a contribution. “When I was a child, even though there were nine children in our family, my parents always helped those less fortunate,” she says. “I was raised to help others, and even though sometimes it can be difficult, I’ve always stuck it out with Terry and made sure he was well taken care of.” a counselor for all ages The depth of Merian’s generosity, however, does not stop there. Of the six boys and two girls she counsels, all but two are in college or a trade school, an accomplishment in which Merian takes much pride. “Two of the girls are my granddaughters, but the other six just found me,” she says. “I enjoy working with the younger generation and guiding them to make the right choices.” Extending her reach with the younger generation, Merian, working with the Love a Child organization, also sponsors James Joseph, a 14-year-old from Haiti. For the past five years, her monthly donations have ensured that James receives a school uniform and nutritious food at school. Once a year, Merian sends him additional gifts of clothing and supplies. When the earthquake struck Haiti this year, James and his family were in the mountains, and fortunately, escaped harm. The devastation, however, gripped Merian. So, she began her humanitarian efforts once again. Purchasing medical supplies and encouraging other ElderCare associates to donate clothing, bedding and other items, Merian packed boxes to be shipped to Haiti. “When I see things like this happen in the world, it really touches my heart,” Merian says. “When I counsel young people here, I use this as a lesson to tell them how good our lives are compared to others around the world.” Continuing her international missions, Merian travels with Marilyn Hickey Ministries to teach the scripture to non-Christians abroad. Using her vacation time to travel to countries such as China, Korea, Japan and Israel, Merian works a second part-time job to fund her trips. “Merian is truly an amazing person,” says ElderCare President Andy Hill. “Anyone who devotes their free time to causes that benefit others, rather than doing something for themselves, speaks volumes about that person’s character and moral fiber.” dation, to support the medical needs of earthquake victims in Haiti. Collecting antibiotics and blood pressure medications for shipment to the devastated country, ElderCare and its partners made Haiti their featured volunteer mission for 2010. In addition, ElderCare supports its local Relay for Life chapter as well as the fundraising efforts of schools in Hawkinsville, Georgia. Each Christmas, ElderCare’s associates donate monetary gifts, toys and clothing to Santa’s Sleigh, which benefits families in need. Finally, ElderCare Vice President Rusty Lee sits on the board of the Archway Partnership, a University of Georgia-sponsored outreach program that connects students and faculty members with communities’ economic development needs. “As an organization, we like to give back to our local community, and in particular, support the youth in any way possible,” Andy says. “Our associates are very giving of their time and resources, making all of our volunteer efforts possible.” 2010 Community Health Systems Annual Report “Anyone who devotes their free time to PHARMACY 4 continuing the legacy of Caring heartfelt care 2010 Community Health Systems Annual Report Sometimes the smallest touches can make the biggest difference in a person’s outlook. For Michelle Whitaker, Occupational Therapist and Director of Rehabilitation at Westbury Health & Rehabilitation in McDonough, Georgia, finding that tiny spark of delight for each of her patients is a daily goal that she tackles with heartfelt enthusiasm. “My patients are here for a number of different reasons,” Michelle says. “Many of them are a bit nervous about rehabilitation, but I want to show them it’s fun so they want to come to therapy, improve their wellbeing, and in many cases, regain their independence so they can return home. To do that, I try to find the little things that bring a smile to their faces everyday.” 5 “For me, that’s the most wonderful part of my day, seeing my patients’ joy and taking their minds off rehab, even for just a few moments.” — Michelle Whitaker Instead of going through the typical motions of rehabilitation Michelle Whitaker therapy, Michelle determines what motivates each of her patients. Getting them to speak about themselves — everything from their personal histories to the things they enjoy, such as family and hobbies — helps her devise rehabilitation plans as unique as each of her patients. “I love to speak with my patients and learn about their lives,” Michelle says. “Besides helping me with therapy, I want them to know that I’m really interested in them and enjoy listening to their stories.” Oftentimes, Michelle discovers her patients are avid gardeners, bakers or even sports enthusiasts. Using this information, Michelle is able pull out special surprises to motivate her patients, particularly on the days they are feeling down. “We have a little tomato garden at the center, and for those patients who have gardens at home, we’ll use this as a therapy tool,” she says. “They get so excited to water and tend the plants, that they’ll walk those extra steps to do so.” On one occasion, Michelle learned that a patient, who had just had a knee replacement, was particularly skilled at golf. Then, she immediately had an idea. Michelle found her grandfather’s old clubs and brought them in for her patient to use in therapy. “He lit up when I brought in those old clubs,” she says. “By the end of his session, he had taught us all the proper techniques to hit the ball, and he had made significant rehabilitation progress. For me, that’s the most wonderful part of my day, seeing my patients’ joy and taking their minds off rehab, even for just a few moments.” continuing a legacy For Rachel Mullis, a regional rehabilitation aide for Integra’s Middle Georgia Region, patient interaction also is a highlight of her day. Raised by her grandmother, Rachel always has looked up to the older generation, listening to them and learning from their wealth of experience. When a promotion commitment to the community sibilities, particularly with its children’s programs. Serving as the Children’s Director for five years, and now serving as the Sunday School Superintendant, Rachel assists with all of the church’s larger events, from Vacation Bible School to its annual fall festival. Last summer, her reach extended further when she traveled to Peru with a group of volunteers to build a home for a local pastor and his family. “My grandmother raised me to be compassionate to others, particularly those who seem to have been forgotten,” Rachel says. “Children and the elderly oftentimes need a champion, and I feel I was put on this earth to care for them and protect them. And, if I can make even a tiny bit of difference in their lives, I have accomplished what I was sent here to do.” Outreach and community service are important to the associates at Integra, so the organization steadfastly gives back to a number of local charities. This year, that commitment to community service was strong with Integra providing support to Habitat for Humanity, Christmas Dreams and Project Haiti. “Our community effort 2010 Community Health Systems Annual Report changed her on-the-job duties from working directly with the patients to training new rehabilitation aides, she worried she would miss her daily sessions with her patients. Fortunately, in her new role, Rachel is required to fill in when other aides are unavailable and assist with patient care. So, she still has the daily patient interactions she has always loved. In fact, she recalls a time when she was taking an older gentleman to therapy. He was nervous about being away from home and his loved ones’ support. As Rachel was wheeling him to therapy, he reached out and grabbed her hand. “Many of my patients will reach out looking for a friend to hold their hand,” she says. “This particular moment really touched my heart because he clutched my hand throughout his entire therapy session. Every day, as I do my job, I think about how I’d like someone to treat my loved ones, and I treat my patients that same way.” Outside of work, Rachel volunteers at her church, taking on tremendous respon- over the last year, as well as in many years past, is to give back collectively,” says Integra President Michelle Moore Andrews. “When our associates come together as a group, each volunteering their time and special talents, their combined efforts make a greater impact on our community at large.” “My grandmother raised me to be compassionate to others, particularly those who seem to have been forgotten.” — Rachel Mullis Rachel Mullis 6 continuing the legacy of Caring to find a cure 2010 Community Health Systems Annual Report For Debbie Boys, Director of Accounting at ECP Distributors (“ECP”), volunteering with organizations supporting cancer research is a personal priority. Diagnosed with stage 3B inflammatory breast cancer in 2004, Debbie faced her own battle with the life-altering disease, but remained determined to support others facing similar circumstances. After her last treatment, Debbie spoke at her local Relay for Life, an event in which participants, in partnership with the American Cancer Society, raise awareness and funds for cancer research. In her speech, Debbie encouraged other cancer patients to foster hope that they, 7 “Unlike many organizations, we’re not just co-workers here, we’re a close-knit group of extended family. The thoughtfulness, giving and caring I received from everyone was beyond compare, and it really helped me beat this disease.” — Debbie Boys Debbie Boys too, would soon reign victorious over their diseases. “When I was diagnosed, the five-year survival rate was just 17 percent,” Debbie says. “But, I was determined to fight. Now, because of aggressive treatments and overwhelming support, I’m pleased to say I’m cancer-free.” As a regular volunteer for Relay for Life, Debbie also continues to share stories of encouragement, speaking with other cancer patients about the neverending support she received from ECP. The organization’s associates divided Debbie’s work duties among themselves so she could work from home and focus on her treatment. “When Debbie fought her battle with cancer, everyone at ECP pulled together and supported her,” says ECP President Cal Franklin. “As an organization, we certainly believe in helping those in need, but in this instance, it hit much closer to home, and we were all determined to see her victorious.” In addition to helping Debbie while she underwent treatment, ECP associates also provided some thoughtful surprises. On her first day of chemotherapy treatment, they threw her a cancer party, making her favorite dishes and showering her with an array of hats and scarves. Then, just two days before Thanksgiving, Debbie underwent surgery. She eventually returned to work to discover that her fellow associates had cooked an entire meal for her family. “Unlike many organizations, we’re not just co-workers here, we’re a close-knit group of extended family,” Debbie says. “The thoughtfulness, giving and caring I received from everyone was beyond compare, and it really helped me beat this disease.” making a difference Last year, thousands of miles away from ECP’s Hawkinsville, Georgia, headquarters, another associate, Justin Dopson, who helps stock the company’s warehouse, was wholeheartedly supporting a different campaign. During their weeklong stay, the group built a home for a local preacher and his family. “This was my first mission trip,” Justin says. “The work was hard, and the tools were primitive, but it was one of the most positive experiences I’ve ever had.” Using old-fashioned ingenuity, the volunteers created a unique mixture to create a floor for the new home. With concrete in short supply, the group used the resources they had, mixing dirt and gravel to form a solid surface. “The preacher’s children would come out and help us every day with building their home,” Justin says. “They were so excited to be part of the project and they were always willing to help.” In the evenings, the missionaries held a devotional, as well as Bible school for the local children. Despite the language barrier, everyone understood the underlying theme, and was uplifted by the experience. “When Justin returned to ECP, you could tell the trip changed him,” Cal says. “It was certainly a rewarding experience for him, and one that we knew he would tackle with the same heart and dependability we see here on a daily basis.” is committed to charitable endeavors, often leading by example. Having grown tired of the inactivity he experienced during retirement, he embraced his new line of work and became more deeply involved in his volunteer efforts at local prisons. “I began volunteering with Kairos Prison Ministries International in 1997 as a one-time favor to a friend who needed some extra help on one of his weekend retreats,” Harold says. “Thirteen years later, I’m still here.” During these three-day weekend ministry sessions, which take place twice a year, Harold and his team of nearly 30 volunteers meet with prisoners, provid- 9 “I began volunteering with Kairos Prison Ministries International in 1997 as a one-time favor to a friend who needed some extra help on one of his weekend retreats. At Washington State Prison, where Harold is a regular volunteer, about 42 inmates have registered for the Christian-based program. With a sizable waiting list for each session, inmates clamor to sign up early for the program and eagerly participate in every roundtable discussion. Three volunteers and six participants make up each fellowship circle so that group discussions become more intimate and comfortable for the participants. During the weekend, there are 12 different sessions followed by a group discussion. After the discussion, participants are asked to create a poster highlighting what they learned during the session. “There’s a certain amount of gratification that comes with our work, and that’s what keeps us going,” Harold says. “Each time we step inside Washington State, we can see God at work, and we can see lives changing in a real and meaningful way.” simple surprises For Shelia Johnson, who has been a certified nursing assistant at Boswell-Parker Nursing Center for the past 10 years, surprising “I’ll bring in fresh tomatoes from my garden or sew them a new gown, and they just perk up with happiness.” – Shelia Johnson her patients with little gifts is a favorite pastime. Everything from vegetables grown in her garden to homemade gifts such as dresses, smocks and clothing protectors bring sheer delight to her patients, and brightens Shelia’s day as well. “I like to see them light up when I bring them little touches of home,” she says. “I’ll bring in fresh tomatoes from my garden or sew them a new gown, and they just perk up with happiness.” Shelia began her generous gift-giving years ago when she noticed how much her patients enjoyed receiving homegrown vegetables from her garden. Taking it one step further, she value - centered service ministry and music Like Harold, Deborah Odom, food service manager for Gray Health and Rehabilitation Center, embraces the healing powers of music for prison inmates. A few years ago, a musician friend of Deborah’s asked her to accompany her church members to Dooly State Prison in Unadila, Georgia, where they would sing and minister to inmates. After an impactful first experience, Deborah and her fellow group of volunteers joyfully head to the prison every second Saturday of the month for hours of worship and encouragement. “They love to see us come in, and if there’s a weekend we can’t make it, they get upset,” Deborah says. “At first, I was intimidated to volunteer, but now, after ministering to these men and seeing the difference we make, this has become a meaningful part of my life.” But, Deborah’s volunteer efforts do not end there. When her mother fell ill several years ago, Deborah accompanied her to every doctor’s appointment, faithfully driving her back and forth and making sure her medicine was in proper order. She discovered that many other elderly people in her community, too, were in need of transportation to their appointments. So, Deborah happily helped. Although her mother passed away in 2007, Deborah has continued offering transportation to her neighbors, ensuring they get the medical attention and support they need. As an organization, Ethica Health & Retirement Communities always has embraced its core values, which focus on service and leadership. With such defined goals, it’s no wonder many of its associates incorporate them into their daily lives. “I find it humbling, when I learn of associates mirroring this commitment that we practice daily in the centers in their own communities.” says Ethica President 2010 Community Health Systems Annual Report purchased a sewing machine and taught herself to sew. Pillows, pillowcases and gowns are often up for grabs, but, from one day to the next, the patients never know what gifts they will be given, and Shelia loves keeping them in suspense. “I taught myself to sew because it brings me joy. Now, when I make little presents for my patients, it brings me even more joy to brighten their days and bring a smile to their faces.” Pam Clayton. “Our associates are very generous with their time and service, and it’s a point of pride for all of us at Ethica.” “After ministering to these men and seeing the difference we make, this has become a meaningful part of my life.” — Deborah Odom Deborah Odom 10 continuing the legacy of Caring beyond the call of duty 2010 Community Health Systems Annual Report Case managers at SOURCE Care Management go the extra mile to meet their members’ needs. Calling or making unannounced visits to ensure members are taking their medications or keeping doctor’s appointments are all common practices. But occasionally, case managers notice when their members need them in a different capacity, and they eagerly step up to help. So, when Tonya Vinson, a SOURCE case manager in the Thomasville, Georgia, office noticed that one of her members was having trouble making ends meet, she immediately took action. “This member was living on a very modest income, but I 11 “I was raised to help others in need; it’s part of who I am” Tonya says. “When I visit with my members, they each have a different story and different issues that need to be addressed, and whatever their needs, if it’s within my ability and resources, I will do everything I can to help them.” Tonya Vinson –Tonya Vinson noticed she was having trouble paying for daily necessities, such as tissue,” Tonya says. “She also talked about how her landlord was continually raising her rent and not fixing necessary repairs, so I spoke with him to get to the bottom of these issues.” After several unsuccessful attempts to help her member resolve the issues with the landlord, Tonya, again, took a proactive approach to her member’s situation and personally picked up an application at the housing authority. Helping her to complete and file the application, Tonya found her member a new apartment at nearly half the cost. But, her member could not afford the security deposit. So, Tonya submitted a request to Community Health Foundation (CHF). As moving day approached, Tonya once again sprung into action, finding volunteers to help her member move and working diligently to alleviate some of her member’s unneeded items. “Tonya is very conscientious when it comes to her members,” says Terri Brinson, R.N., Regional Director. “She goes beyond what’s required of her, and she never hesitates to exhaust every means to assist her members.” “I was raised to help others in need; it’s part of who I am,” Tonya says. “When I visit with my members, they each have a different story and different issues that need to be addressed, and whatever their needs, if it’s within my ability and resources, I will do everything I can to help them.” nurturing those in need Like Tonya, Vickie T. But, last July, when Neil Goodenough, vice president of the Information Systems Department at SAS, was elected to the Board of Directors of the Food Bank, he noticed citizens in Jones County received far less assistance than those in other counties. “Once I became a member, I would receive a monthly report detailing the number of people helped in each county,” Neil says. “I noticed that Jones County was consistently below its targeted goal, even though the number of people in poverty in our county was higher than many others.” Determined to find a solu“Although internally, we focus on information technology, outside of work, SAS strives to do something of value and reach out to those in our community who are in need.” — Sandra G. Developed to expand CHS’ reach to include hospice and home health care needs, SHS provides support for both Affinis Hospice and Amicita Home Health. From its initial conception, SHS president Trevor Matchim, envisioned an organization that not only embraced the fundamentals of CHS’ health care philosophy, which upholds compassionate care and superior service, but also embodied the ideals on which it was founded. “When we were researching applicable names for the new organization, we came across the word ‘steward,’ which refers to an individual in charge of the wellbeing or finances of another,” Trevor says. “Adopting the title, we felt it appropriately described the foundation of our organization, in which we strive to be good stewards of our patients’ care and well-being.” Affinis Hospice When CHS decided to increase its scope of health care services in greater Georgia, creating an organization solely dedicated to hospice care was a logical first step. Founded in December 2009, Affinis Hospice (“Affinis”) was developed to meet the needs of patients in the final stage of life. Using an interdisciplinary team approach to patient care — in which doctors, nurses, certified home health aides, social workers and volunteers work together to assist patients — Affinis strives to uphold its vision, which focuses on adding more life to each day. “When patients enter our hospice care, we don’t focus on finding a cure for their ailment, rather we focus our energy and resources on providing comfort and dignity in this final stage of their life,” says Sarah Thompson, RN, CHPN, Director of Operations for Affinis. “At its core, the hospice philosophy doesn’t support the acceleration of death or the prolonging of life. Instead, hospice care is palliative in nature.” Currently licensed to offer hospice services to terminally ill patients in 24 counties in northwest Georgia, Affinis hopes to soon expand to reach the entire state. “Although the organization is in its infancy, we envision tremendous growth over the next three years,” Trevor says. “One of our main objectives is to create a continuum of care for residents across the state of Georgia. To foster this objective, we are developing working relationships with Ethica Health & Retirement Communities, as well as other health care centers.” Amicita Home Health With a solid foundation for hospice care firmly in the works, SHS was ready to embark on its next service line, Amicita Home Health (“Amicita”), which would further enhance the organization’s comprehensive approach to health care. Amicita was designed specifically to pro- Steward Health Services’ Standards Like all of CHS’s member organizations, SHS and its affiliates strive toward a high standard of seras wound care, and speech, physical and occupational therapy, Amicita wants to see patients regain their independence with the help of medical modifications. At present, Amicita has seven offices in south Georgia serving 11 counties. But soon, the organization plans to expand its outreach. “By providing health care to patients in their homes, this allows Amicita to work closely with Ethica Health & Retirement Communities, as well as other health care centers,” Trevor says. This collaboration with various health care centers is a testament to Amicita’s philosophy on patient well-being, which seeks to provide cooperative care for the duration of their medical needs. Once patients are discharged, we can manage their ongoing health needs, ensuring the continuum of care is seamless.” vice. Quality equipment, knowledgeable customer service representatives, caring support and accurate deliveries are some of the benchmarks of their operations. “Steward Health Services’ organizations are continually working towards maintaining and meeting the standards CHS has put in place for all of its health care members,” Trevor says. “We are happy to add our newest service lines to the CHS family, and look forward to complementing the standard of health care on which this organization was founded.” “Adopting the title, we felt it appropriately described the foundation of our organization, in which we strive to be good stewards of our patients’ care and well-being.” –Trevor Matchim 2010 Community Health Systems Annual Report vide patients — particularly those who are leaving skilled nursing and rehabilitation centers and still require supervision — with skilled medical care in their own homes. Amicita, loosely translated, means “among friends,” and is a name Trevor and his associates chose specifically for this organization. “As a home-based health care organization, Amicita is geared toward patients who are ready and capable to live on their own at home, but who require a little help to get them reacclimated,” says Mary Howard, RN, BSN, COS-C Director of Operations for Amicita. Trevor continues: “We want their experience with Amicita to be cheerful and friendly, so we chose a name that exemplifies that.” With nurses, aides, therapists and social workers performing a range of skilled medical services, such HEALTH SERVICES 16 financial highlights assets number of Georgians served Customers..............................................15,136 49% 22% 2010 Community Health Systems Annual Report 29% 17 Current Assets Property & Equipment Associates.............................................6,983 Donors..................................................3,094 Other Assets program expenses liabilities & net assets 5% 10% 51% 14% 25% Current Liabilities Other Liabilities Long-Term Debt Fund Balance 8% 32% 55% Labor & Benefits Supplies & Services Property Taxes & Provider Fees Property Costs continuing the legacy of Caring Each year, through the generous contributions of Community Health Systems’ (CHS) member associates, Community Health Foundation (CHF) raises thousands of dollars to help fellow associates, community members and local organizations in need. Since CHF’s founding in 2003, nearly $1 million has been raised to help more than 4,000 individuals. This year, more than half of CHS’ approximately 6,000 member associates have contributed to CHF. Each associate chooses the amount of their donation, which can range from $1 to $20, and has the amount automatically deducted from his or her paycheck. With so many associates committing to this worthy organization, CHF is fortunate to have the necessary funds to change the circumstances of many people in need of assistance. Through its two main fundraising factions — The Hearts to Hands Fund and The Annual Fund — CHS’ member associates also can designate how they want CHF to use their donation. Making a donation to The Hearts to Hands Fund ensures that the money member associates donate is used to provide support only for CHS associates or its member organizations who have completed the application process and been approved by CHF. Donations to The Annual Fund, however, reach beyond CHS’ infrastructure and provide support to individuals and organizations impacted by CHS through its daily operations. Each year, for example, CHF provides the necessary funds to help seniors purchase air conditioners and heaters to improve their quality of life. Likewise, CHF has partnered with disaster relief agencies and organizations such as Habitat for Humanity to provide assistance on a much larger scale. As the scope and depth of CHF’s assistance changes from year to year, the need for the generous support and contributions of CHS’ member associates remains a constant. There always will be opportunities to give back, and CHF will continue to offer assistance to those individuals and organizations in need of our help. Through your donations, CHF can continue to change the lives of those in need, and together, we can make a difference. Community Health Foundation holiday shopping for the needy 2010 Community Health Systems Annual Report a foundation for caring 18 continuing the legacy of Caring foundation pledges and contributions 2010 Community Health Systems Annual Report We would like to take this opportunity to thank the following people for giving back and for being of great service to others. Because of your generosity, Community Health Foundation is proud to make contributions that will create stronger people and even stronger communities. 19 Lisa Aaron Michelle Y.
