Fiesta Controversy
Alcudia Bay to
Receive Natural Gas in Santa Margalida
Redexis gas company has
completed construction of
the pipeline that connects
a supply of natural gas
to Alcúdia Son Reus.
This pipeline will also be
connected to the national
grid that connects the
peninsula with Mallorca
by underwater pipeline.
Neighbourhoods and
hoteliers in Alcudia are yet
to be connected, Redexis is
waiting for the season to
finish and will begin work in
September and October to
establish the local channels. In
the coming days, Redexis will
meet with the council to deal
with municipal licenses so
that it can start to build the
distribution network within
the municipality.
Over winter, it will develop
the commercial side and
begin a campaign in which all
stakeholders can start hiring
the new service. By this time
it will be connected to Can
Picafort and Playa de Muro,
where already more than 76
hotels have requested the new
fuel in their establishments.
It is said the use of natural
gas saves 45% on energy
bills over other fuels such as
diesel or propane, it is also
environmentally friendly
reducing CO2 emissions by
30%. The pipeline project was
approved by the Ministry of
Industry, who were drawn
by the significant savings;
Redexis claim there would
be €9 million a year savings.
“An income that probably
would improve the quality of
tourist facilities, hire more
workers or even extend the
tourist season and, ultimately,
improve the competitiveness
of the tourism destination…”
concludes a spokesperson
from Redexis.
Residents of Son Serra de
Marina ended the festivities
with a noisy protest against
the Council of Santa
Margalida. They were
unhappy with the ‘poor
organization’ and neglect of
political representatives in
developing the celebrations.
The biggest gripe was with
the events being moved away
from the church square, the
normal location for the town’s
fiestas.
During the closing event,
neighbours were to release
lanterns and make a wish. The
event, known as Amollada
of Desitjos, replaced the
fireworks but could not be
held because these lanterns
didn’t arrive. It was at this
point that neighbours
decided to congregate in the
Church Square and protest.
The new government team
formed by the PP, decided
to move Convergència
activities such as the outdoor
cinema and theatre to the
Civic Centre Square. The
Councillor for Fiestas,
Magdalena Marimon said
that the change was due to
“several complaints made by
residents.”
On Friday night, the City
Council decided to suspend
the Carnaval d’Estiu because
of rain and on Sunday
morning the Pirate Ships
were not held because they
had not prepared. Opposition
councillor, Nofre Plomer
criticized the “total neglect”
of the local government team
that “yielded to pressure from
some neighbours.”

Campanet-Moscari road has
started again after a phase
of slowdown. The Consell
de Mallorca has announced
that the insular director of
Infrastructures and Mobility,
Inaki Miranda, met with
the construction company
to unlock the project. The
company that runs the works
said the condition of the
road should be made for the
anticipated cycling events
between August 20 and
September 3.
Emser Employment
Criticized
The group Alternativa per
Pollença, the opposition
party in the town, recently
denounced the “irregular”
contracts of five workers in
the municipal services, Emser.
They accuse the temporary
contracts of breaching “the
collective agreement of the
company and prove that
management does what it
wants without the politicians
in power to remedy.”
They claimed that no
agreement warned staff
representatives nor was
any information provided
through the municipal media.
There are rules that state
that principles of equality,
merit and publicity should
be made for access to public
employment.
Mayor of Pollensa, Miquel
Angel March countered
saying that staffing was
performed according to the
usual procedure. He said
that before hiring the five
workers arrangements with
the relevant authorities were
made, but was met with no
response so they resorted to
an internal list of potential
workers.

tsunami-like ocean wave that
is mainly caused by travelling
air pressure disturbances.
Several coastal areas of
both Mallorca and Menorca
suffered the ‘rissagues’
over the weekend Puerto
Pollensa and Ciutadella
Menorca witnessed floods.
The Menorcan port endured
a major swing of the sea,
which surged up 1.3 meters
and a yellow alert remained
almost all day. Portocolom
and Alcudia also saw water
overflow the docks.
The water flooded some
houses and establishments in
Menorca, and also hit parked
cars but it caused no damage
in Mallorca.
Road ownership
debate reopened
Seven years after the
adoption of the catalogue of
municipal property, the city
of Pollensa has reopened the
investigation to determine
the ownership of 16 roads.
Despite evidence to confirm
they are municipal property,
they were not included in the
public inventory approved in
2008. Instead it was left to
determine accurately whether
they are public or private.
The investigation opened in
2008 to much discussion,
but nothing was settled and
records were paralyzed.
The new administration of
Junts Avançam and UMP
has decided to resume these
investigations in order to
clarify once and for all and
ensure there are no more
doubts about its public
ownership. All these roads
were already included in
the list of Pollensan roads
prepared by FODESMA
in 2001, although the City
Council

Summer at
the Roman
City of
Pollentia
The Pollentia Roman Ruins
in Alcudia’s Old Town
have recently been under
the limelight firstly, with
its Open Day during the
Sant Jaume Fiesta and
secondly with the annual
archaeological course, which
ended its 17th edition last
week.

other buildings
like the
Polimnia house,
the area of
the necropolis
and finally, the
excavations in the church of
Santa Ana, which received
the go-ahead from Roman
Catholic Diocese of Mallorca
and the Council of Mallorca,
for the first time.
The Open Day was opened to
everyone and co-directors of
the summer’s excavation gave
talks on the research they’ve
carried out, the findings they
have made and their goals for
the 2015 course.
The Antoni Arribas
Archaeology Course
ended last Friday with a
presentation of diploma to its
20 students who came from
the University of Portland
and others from across Spain.
Visitors were also able to look
at areas not usually open to
visitors such as the area of
Sa Portella to see part of the
wall from outside, the forum,

One member of the
excavation team was
Francisca Cardona, a
forensic anthropologist at
the University of Granada,
who dedicated her last week
in Pol·lentia to unearth a
child skeleton. It was found,
surprisingly, in an area of
sandstone tombs that had
been discovered in the early
1930s but left untouched.
Francisca worked as a
technician during this year’s
dig. With patience and skill,
the expert cleaned the earth
from the skeleton. They still
have half a dozen empty
graves that the first scholars
found more than eighty years
ago. Also this year, the team
was able to invest in a survey
using magnetometry and
ground penetrating radar
leading them to discover
more of the Roman city.
Meeting the Mayor of Alcudia, Antoni Mir
Antoni Mir is new to the
council of Alcudia, in fact so
is his party, El Pi. Formed just
two and a half years ago, El
Pi now has 10 mayors across
Mallorca with Pi candidates
in prominent positions in
other local governments.
New to the Townhall, Mir
told Talk of the North
that the first month was
somewhat hectic with a lot of
people wanting to have their
say. Many spoke to him about
the local urban taxes, which
he aims to lower during his
term in office. Other issues
include the sewage problem,
which has been reported in
recent issues of TOTN.
Focusing on these issues
during his term in office, the
mayor also indicated that he
would like to modify certain
elements at townhall and
provide a solution for the
aging population of the town.
When asked about the
takeover, he commented that
it was mostly smooth with just
some outstanding bills that
continued from page 2

inventory of public goods due to doubts about
its ownership. During this time, some groups
such as the ‘pro camins platform públics i
oberts’ have been collecting new data to be
incorporated in the records.
needed to be taken care of.
Going forward, Mayor
Mir intends to bring the
government to the people and
have more people engaged.
When asked about the
English-speaking community,
he invited the foreign
residents to come and speak
with him, “they are residents
and have the same problem as
Mallorquins.” His colleague
who deals with Institutional
relations speaks good English.
Watch this space to hear what
he has to say.
The municipal bill received votes from all
councillors except for the PP and the Mayor
Miquel Àngel March, who abstained. His
abstention is because one of the routes, the
Cami Llarg, runs next to a finca he owns. The
debate runs from over 7 years, a mayoral term
before Tomeu Cifre who says that the issue
was not a priority during his term of office.

Via Fora: A Guided Tour
that’s full of Drama
The 12th edition of Alcudia’s dramatized guided tours of
the city, Via Fora, started last month. Organized by the
Department of Culture and sponsored by the department
of culture of the Consell de Mallorca, the first performance
was attended by more than 200 people comprising residents,
tourists and officials. The audience was taken along the city
walls and guided through history, from the 14th to the 20th
century, with the use of drama.
The 2015 edition has seen some developments to the
programme, which is as follows:
The First Scene is at Porta des Moll: “Building the Walls of the
14th century.”
Second Scene is at the Church of Sant Jaume: Up to the 16th
century.
Third scene is at the Porta San Sebastian: Carlos V visits
Alcudia, 3 June 1535.
Fourth scene is at the Camino de Ronda and Carrer del
Progres to see Knight Asfeld in Alcudia, 1715.
Fifth Scene is at the Pont de la Vila Roja and Records del café
de Plaça for the 20th century.
Organizers will also be holding a lecture and screening of
the documentary to commemorate the three-hundredth
anniversary of the end of the War of Succession.

Pollensa Festival
Daniel Hope: The British violinist’s version and interpretation
of Vivaldi at last year’s festival was such an impressive
experience that Daniel Hope is coming back to the Claustre.
This time the violinist will perform with a group of soloists.
Air – A Baroque Journey, one of the latest records by Hope,
features a programme of great works of Baroque music, which
deserve their place in the history of music.
Mexican Culture: Mexican poetry, cookery workshops,
cinema, and various music performances put Mexican culture
firmly in the
spotlight.
Sebastian
Knauer: At
the peak of
his amazing
career, the
German
pianist
Sebastian
Knauer,
gifted with
outstanding musicality and virtuosity, offers a programme
of works by Beethoven and Schubert executed with singular
originality to fill the Claustre with his interpretative beauty.
The Antonio Vivaldi Orchestra of Venice: With the goal
of showcasing Mallorcan musicians, who unquestionably
deserve to share the programme with international figures,
this year’s Festival has invited the performer and instructor
Andreu Riera, who will be accompanied by a splendid Baroque
orchestra from Venice. Together they will bring to life Mozart
in all his dimension and intensity. The work by Respighi (18791936), which the Orchestra will perform is a composition
inspired by the pieces for lute from the Renaissance and
Baroque.
Family Concert: Peter and the Wolf. Peter and the Wolf is a
symphonic composition by Sergei Prokofiev (Op. 67) written
in 1936. In this work, each character in the tale is represented
by an instrument and a characteristic melody. At the
beginning of the show, a narrator presents the characters and
the instrument that personifies them. The Per Poc company
perform with puppets, which illustrate the actions that are
taking place in the story.

Open Water
Swimming
seems the
obvious
choice in this
heat and over
the season
we see many
Ironmen and
women and
triathletes
from all over
the world
take part
in the local
swim races while they are
on holiday. Just recently in
Alcudia’s III Cursa de Natacio
Ciutat d’Alcudia, athletes
from the UK took part
alongside swimmers from
Mallorca. Travelling from
the UK was Delphine Little
who took on the challenge
of her first ever open water
competition. As one of the
youngest competitors in
the field, the 12 year old
was faced with choppy seas
and difficult conditions
around the 2km route but
her gutsy performance was
rewarded with a bronze
medal in the 16 and under
age group. Her mum and
master’s swimmer Gabrielle
Little also competed in the
event taking a fantastic silver
medal in the 119-strong field.
If you fancy taking part in
a race, the V Travessa Son
Serra de Marina 2015 has
Your online travel guide for everything you need to plan, book & enjoy your holiday
been moved to August 8th.
It’s a 5km swim that starts
from the Hotel Son Baulo in
Can Picafort and finishes at

The Mallorquinista by Charles Nutter

money from the La Liga TV deal will be
available to buy them permanently. If they
don’t come up to expectations then they can
return to their parent clubs.
The club went to Germany on a pre-season
tour with the object of blooding all the new
signings and Chapi played totally different
elevens in each half of the games.
Hennebole, Carioca and Moutinho were
the ones who made the most impression but
few conclusions can be drawn at this early
stage. For the record a 2 – 2 draw with RotWeiss-Essen saw youth team players Brandon
and Sastre score. Hannover were the next
opponents and Carioca scored in a 1 – 1 draw.
The final game at Offenbach was a third draw
in a row, 1 – 1 and youngster Cedric scored.
Palma airport is always very busy in the summer and even
more so this year with the number of players leaving Real
Mallorca and new additions coming through the arrivals
lounge. One of the more interesting acquisitions is striker
Javier Carlos Acuna who is Paraguayan by birth. He and his
wife were met at the airport by a van, which was hired to
collect their sixteen suitcases! They clearly don’t travel light.
Acuna is a striker who has played for a whole number of clubs
and is well known to head coach Chapi Ferrer. He is seen as
experienced back-up to young Brazilian Luis Carioca who has
made a big impression with the coaching staff.
Winger Jimmy Kebe (formerly of Reading) was on trial
with the club but wasn’t able to prove his fitness and he has
departed. Curiously the club had previously announced the
signing of journeyman midfielder Michel but ultimately the
parties were not able to agree on a bonus structure and he
left the island – probably no great loss.
A two-day trip to Holland saw the first defeat in pre season 1 –
0 by Den Haag and the final game was a victory at Heerenveen
with a Fofo penalty. The club have announed that the City of
Palma trophy will be played against La Liga side Leveante on
Wednesday the 12th of August with an 8.30 kick off. This will
be the last pre-season game and the league starts in earnest
with a trip to Alcorcon on Saturday the 22nd of August. The
first home game at the Son Moix stadium will be against
Ponferradina on Sunday the 30th of August at 9pm. More
new faces are expected at the Son Joan airport in the coming
weeks. Hopefully the team will at least know each others
names when the season starts.
Another player from Reading 19 year old midfielder
Aaron Khul was a surprise appearance on trial and it will
be interesting to see if he is signed on a potential seasonlong loan. Trialist Tobias Hennebole a German centre half
has impressed Chapi greatly and a verbal agreement on a
contract for the former Wolfsburg player has been reached.
Cristian Bustos has left the club and gone to the Indian
Premier League with Mumbai City. India is traditionally a
staunch cricket country but football has really taken off there
in recent times.
Central defender Lucas Aveldaño is the new “leader of the
defence” in his own words. Argentinian by birth, he was
signed on a season-long loan with an option to buy. Many
of the new players at Mallorca have penned deals in a
similar fashion, which makes sense. If the players perform
as expected and achieve the holy grail of promotion, then
