Sudden cardiac arrest remains a leading cause of death in the Western hemisphere. The majority of patients die before they reach the hospital. Experimental studies have shown that the mechanically controlled LUCASTM compressions are able to sustain a higher blood flow when compared to manual compressions. It provides the same quality for all patients and is independent of transport conditions and first responder fatigue. A very important aspect for MDA paramedics is that, because LUCASTM is automated, the need to shift CPR providers every two minutes is eliminated. Shlomo is a driver and senior Medic, Dina is a Medic, and Mor is a youth volunteer and First Aid provider. The family recently made history when they spent an eight hour shift together volunteering on the same ambulance. "It was an unforgettable experience to see my granddaughter working in an emergency situation”, said Shlomo. Yasher Koach to all CMDA?chapters across Canada for their loyal support A R O U N D T H E C O U N T R Y NATIONAL ISRAEL REMEMBERING Shirley Moscovitch z”l Canadian Magen David Adom’s first National Executive Director, Shirley Moscovitch, passed away in February after a lengthy illness. Known as Mrs. Magen David Adom, Shirley was a force to be reckoned with, not one to be taken lightly, and determined to put CMDA on the map. And for 23 years, she did just that, making CMDA a household name so that today there are chapters across Canada. Baby girl born in MICU on the side of the road during the snowstorm. Benjamin Netanyahu visits MDA Jerusalem Station During Israel’s February snowstorm, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the MDA Jerusalem station. He met the workers and volunteers, toured the Regional Dispatch Centre and heard a full report about MDA’s activities, including the delivery of a baby girl. MDA Director General, Eli Bin, accompanied the Prime Minister and informed him about the preparedness of MDA during the storm and the lessons learned from last year’s snowstorm. He was shown the special technology and equipment used by MDA for the command and control of events and for treating the wounded under severe weather conditions. The Prime Minister praised Magen David Adom for its professional and excellent work. “I am very impressed with the work done here by the many volunteers and staff. Thanks to them, Magen David Adom is able to cope with the snowstorm in the best possible manner.” She’s done it again! Whether it was assuming responsibility for fiscal management, developing relationships with donors, mounting fundraising campaigns, representing the organization at community events, attending the annual MDA conferences in Israel, Shirley was passionate and hands on in every aspect. Even in her retirement years, Shirley maintained a close relationship with CMDA. An Honorary Director, not a week would go by without a call from Shirley to find out the latest news from Israel. Shirley will be dearly missed by all who were fortunate to have known her and to have worked with her. LONDON HAMILTON Hilda Rosen is never one to give up easily so, when she puts her mind to something, you can make sure she will succeed. Her fall fundraising campaign has enabled the purchase of a MEDUMAT CPR Ventilator for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. A highlight of his visit was a meeting with Ezra Shanken, CEO, Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver, in which they discussed greater ties between Federation and MDA. WINNIPEG MDA student awareness Winnipeg Chapter members, Ami Bakerman and Avi Stoller, a former student at Gray Academy, gave two presentations at Gray Academy; the first to Grade 7 students with the focus on the importance of tzedakah and how to donate part of their Bar/Bat Mitzvah gifts to CMDA. The second presentation was made to Grades 10 and 11 students with the focus on the possibility of volunteering with Magen David Adom Israel. 4 Celebrating 50 years Dora Moses presents a certificate to Mina & Sam Sussman on the occasion of their 50th Wedding Anniversary. In their honour, friends have purchased an Oxygen Cylinder Regulator and other supplies required by MDA paramedics. WINNIPEG In memory of John Thiessen The members of the Winnipeg Chapter mourn John Thiessen who passed away in December. John felt a “calling” to bless the Jewish people and to stand and support the State of Israel. Through his friendship with John Plantz, he became involved with a number of Jewish organizations including John Plantz and John Thiessen the Winnipeg Chapter of in Israel. Canadian Magen David Adom. Whenever and wherever he could – at conferences, at music festivals, in shopping malls – he would talk to people about the importance of raising money for ambulances and medical equipment for the people of Israel. John Thiessen will be greatly missed but his work and his love for Israel will live on.
