Under Mike Sr.’s leadership the focus has always been on the health of the business as well as the health of their family. In his own words - “I can replace a business partner, I can’t replace a son.” As such, the Sipples have worked tirelessly to learn how to communicate better and to hear and understand each other. This extends beyond their biological family to their core support group of employees and advisors, all of whom have played valuable roles in the succession strategy. In 2015, Mike Sipple Jr. now succeeds his father in the role of President of Centennial. He will be supported by T.J. Bugg in his new role as Executive Vice President, as well as through the continued support of Mike Jr.’s mom Susan Sipple (Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer) and Becky Scheeler (Vice President of Client Engagement). Centennial is also pleased to announce the addition of Julie Warden as Director of Client Services. Mike Sr. will continue his role as CEO. Our community and clients are better because of Centennial’s commitment and involvement over the last 40 years. With an exceptional leadership team in place and a continued strategy for success through relationships, Centennial is poised to continue that legacy. West Chester Hospital Granted Level III Trauma Center Verification Liberty Township Resident to Champion Cause Of Character Building in Greater Cincinnati Liberty Township resident Anthony “Trent” Warner was re-elected as the Chairman of the Board of the Character Council of Greater Cincinnati & Northern Kentucky, a unique nonprofit organization dedicated to positive character development in children and adults. Trent is manager of technology sales for iSqFt, a Blue Ash company that supports the construction industry. He is excited about the future of every person who engages with the Council. “We believe that you were designed for the journey you are on and you are called to contribute beyond your present levels. We are excited to invite and challenge you along this journey, because we know the answers are in the character that we develop together.” Newly elected officers for 2015 include: Vice Chair Gary Lee, retired captain of the Cincinnati Police and trauma therapist at the Counseling Alliance; and Treasurer Matt Goetz, a CPA with Bressler & Company. West Chester Hospital has been granted verification as a Level III Trauma Center from the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. WCH will hold this designation through December of 2017 at which point the program will be evaluated for recertification. Over the past two years, the hospital’s trauma committee, physicians and staff – led by Dr. Jay Johannigman, Chair, UC Health Division of Trauma & Critical Care Surgery – have worked diligently toward this goal. They all deserve our most sincere congratulations for the tremendous effort put forth to achieve it. The goal for the UC Health trauma services program is to provide the community with the most advanced level of emergency medical care available in the region. West Chester Hospital’s recent achievement further emphasizes our success in attaining this valued goal. May 2015 | THE VOICE 5 April Luncheon Recap Dr. Clarence G. Newsome, who is the president of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, was our April guest speaker. I found Dr. Newsome to be a delightful and engaging person. This warm hearted man was a hard-nosed varsity football player with Duke University’s nationally ranked team, could run the 100-yard dash in 9.9 seconds and was drafted by the NFL’s St. Louis Cardinals but opted for divinity school to become an ordained minister. While a student-athlete at Duke, he was the first African-American scholarship athlete from North Carolina and worked tirelessly to make headway for minorities in college athletics. He reminisced about a game played against Ohio State in Columbus as an experience he shall never forget. As the president of the Freedom Center, he expressed his gratitude for our way of government and “the way in which we as a nation seek to go about representing our freedom throughout this nation and the world.” As the head of the Freedom Center, Dr. Newsome has come to realize that beginning with his college years “so many of my essays, research papers and the like dealt with the theme of freedom and liberation.” Of note, he was the first African-American student commencement speaker at Duke and his topic was freedom. SPEAKER – Dr. Clarence G. Newsome, National Underground Railroad Freedom Center A transformative moment happened as it was related to him that the story of the Underground Railroad is a faith based story. With this, he “felt myself really connect to the mission of the center…and in the way that Providence works things out in a person’s life, I was being given an opportunity to take on an assignment that would help to fulfill me as the kind of person I had envisioned myself to be...in the way of serving others...and help promote the cause of freedom.” Early on an inner voice told Dr. Newsome that he really needed to become an expert in the concept of freedom. He explained the etymology of freedom means “to pray”. At that moment an energy flowed through him to put together an outstanding team “to make good on this commitment that I have made.” EMCEE – Britt Scearce, Emery Federal Credit Union He then declared to us the mission of their organization is “to champion freedom all over the world so that all people shall and will live free!” He saluted those who made the phenomenon of the Underground Railroad come alive and the “ideal of American freedom that they embraced and they embraced it to the very core of their being.” He explained that “we champion inclusive freedom…all people enjoying rights and privileges of equal kind, equal number and equal quality.” He declared it is well that we have progressed as a nation and “we are positioned to become truly, truly the greatest nation the world will have ever seen, because of this genius of the concept called freedom. Freedom is found in the way that we relate one to another in very positive ways.” He related how those involved with the Underground Railroad put their lives on the line to help slaves seeking freedom. He shared five principles which depict a “true picture” of the Underground Railroad: •Self-determination – keyword “identity” • Financial self-sufficiency – keyword “self-worth” •Responsible exercise of human rights – keyword “accountability” •Building inclusive democratic societies – keyword “ownership” • Participation to build inclusive free market economies – keyword “contribution” • Dr. Newsome concluded with a touching testimony of his passion to work with young people. “My heart and my passion is there, an opportunity to share with them my story”. He expressed his gratitude how this “nation committed to freedom” could help a person “like me to live out my dream.” Mike Lupidi Smart Pro Screen NEW MEMBERS – Joe Hinson, President & CEO of the West Chester Liberty Chamber Alliance (center) welcomes members attending their first luncheon (left to right): Amanda Poling, Hauser Heating & Air Conditioning; Ben Davis, Colliers International; Sarah Hahn, Savoy at The Streets of West Chester; Mike Keeney, Commercial Works; Bruce Jones, Coldwell Banker; Linda Boutet, Apple Pie Cleaning Company LLC; Kate Davis, Bricker & Eckler LLP ■ [email protected] 513.779.1433 SPONSOR – AstraZeneca 6 www.TheChamberAlliance.com TABLE DISPLAY – Charles Schwab Liberty Township Greg Wilkens, Butler County Engineer, provided guests with a Butler County update. West Chester Veterinary Care Raising a puppy is like raising a child in many ways. Both need structure and leadership to grow into a happy and welladjusted adult. While training classes may help your puppy learn basic manners and commands, a puppy’s education isn’t complete without proper socialization. Socialization includes exposure to different places, people, “scary” objects, and of course other dogs. This part of puppy training is very important for teaching puppies both confidence and coping skills. West Chester Veterinary Care now offers a program to manage the many needs of a growing puppy. Puppies in the critical period between 6 weeks and 6 months are the perfect age to learn social skills. WCVC’s Puppy Preschool helps puppies overcome any anxiety they may feel when visiting the vet office by exposing them to basic veterinary handling and experiences. In the afternoon the puppies play with other dogs in supervised daycare. There the puppies learn the things we humans cannot teach, such as play manners and dog body language. r. West Chester Family Dentistry May 2015 | THE VOICE 11 What’s New in Liberty Township www.liberty-township.com LIBERTY CENTER PROJECT RESULTS IN LOCAL WATERSHED IMPROVEMENTS IN THE TOWNSHIP In addition to the economic boost and local infrastructure improvements associated with the Liberty Center project, the developer Steiner + Associates, is undertaking some exciting environmental work and natural resource restoration projects in Liberty Township. This past year, Steiner has funded two (2) large stream restoration projects along Gregory Creek in Liberty Township and on the Great Miami River near Lesourdsville. The work is being performed as ‘mitigation’ for impacts to streams associated with the project. ‘Mitigation’ is where the developer has agreed to make environmental improvements somewhere else in the watershed in exchange for the impact of the development. In Dudley Woods, a park operated by Butler County Metroparks, a large section of Gregory Creek has been restored to prevent further erosion and channel degradation as well as provide improved riffle/pool habitat for aquatic species such as fish and macroinvertebrates. In addition, over 65 acres of ‘invasive’ bush honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii) has been eradicated from the park and approximately 8,000 native tree seedlings were planted in the Fall of 2014 (see photos above and below). The work will help stabilize Gregory Creek within the park and reduce the amount of non-native, invasive species which have historically prevented climax tree species like Oaks, Maples, Sycamore, and Beech from recolonizing within Dudley Woods. Furthermore, trails which were undercut by stream erosion will be reopened and allow for more enjoyable hiking. Over time, a healthier stream and forest ecosystem will develop in this Liberty Township natural area. On behalf of Steiner, Cardno will continue to maintain and monitor the restoration projects for five years. This includes water quality sampling and vegetation surveys. Steiner has retained local ecological consulting and restoration firm, Cardno, to provide turnkey mitigation services for the project. The work includes approximately 4,250 LF of stream restoration and riparian buffer enhancements at the William F. and Cora Dudley Memorial Woods Park in Liberty Township and approximately 4,100 LF of riparian restoration along the Great Miami River. estest est What’s in in What’s at’s New in NewNew West Chester Township Chester Township restTownship O H I O O H I O O H I O WestChesterOH.org WestChesterOH.org WestChesterOH.org $80 MillioN New iNvestMeNt aNNouNced iN 2013 First earlyNearly $80 Financial MillioN iNBank NewiNiNvestMeNt aNNouNced iN 2013 lioNAfter-Hours iN New iNvestMeNt on The Square aNNouNced iN 2013 166 retention new jobs, ofretention 334new jobs and new New ar rivals were anno unced allas year long as West Chester resulted inresulted 166 newinj obs, 334 jobsofand ar rivals were announced all year long West Chester investment of near ly $800,000. continued to grow its diverse and sustainable local economy. investment of near ly $800,000. inued to i ts diverse Needgrow to unwind after work?and Grab sustainable some friends and local head toeconomy. A proud recipient of the Healthgrades® Outstanding Patient Experience Award™ for Four Consecutive Years Update on Lakota Local Schools Spring is when we generally start hiring teachers and other employees for the coming school year. We’re in one of our busiest recruiting seasons ever, as we prepare to hire up to 100 teachers. Demographics are a big part of the reason. The baby-boomers are retiring. Also, when our growth rate exploded in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s we hired many new employees within a relatively short period of time. Those employees are all approaching retirement together. Another factor is a change in the state pension laws, which has many school employees retiring this year. Of course, we’ll still have more than 800 outstanding teachers returning and helping make our new teachers feel welcome. We got a very early start in the job recruiting market, which is important because high-quality teachers are in demand. We look for teachers who are well-trained and who focus on children. UCHealth.com/WestChesterHospital West Chester Chamber Alliance VOICE Ad Quarter Page, 3.73” wide x 4-75” high May 2015 We are always evaluating our personnel needs, as they change based on many factors, such as enrollment, curriculum changes, state mandates, etc. We always want to make sure our workforce is structured for student success, in a fiscally responsible way. In 2010 we had 1,117 teachers and we currently have 923, a 17.4 percent decrease over five years. That’s a testament to our commitment to keep staffing levels aligned with changing needs. It’s also important that we work to have a more diverse staff, reflecting the 26 percent diversity among Lakota students. Having our staff represent a wide range of ethnicities and cultures is important when you consider the global workforce our students will be entering one day. Grow your company’s next group of leaders with training from Butler Tech Lean Office Generational/Diversity Training Microsoft Office Suite Many other learning solutions can be customized for your business. Each year, 25-30 community leaders are selected, through an application process, to participate in a program of community education and leadership training. Leadership 21 calls upon business owners and managers, government and school leaders and citizen volunteers to study various aspects of our community in-depth. During nine full-day sessions throughout the program year (September–May), class members explore issues such as education, history, government, criminal justice, communications and economic development, to name a few. An entire day is spent on each topic, visiting key locations such as the county jail, the local police department, schools, food pantries, as well as other area businesses, to get a clearer picture of the community in which they live and conduct business. “Strengths are the combination of talent, knowledge and skills, and are formed by synaptic connections, which stop changing at age twelve.” Bob Jewell, a presenter at March’s Leadership 21 program, highlighted this quote during his presentation. Please note that Bob is a Strengths Finder specialist with Omega Leadership Group, NOT Omega Processing. At every session, the class becomes more fully acquainted with the key issues facing our region, and gains a grasp of the interdependence of each sector and of the mutual understanding and cooperation needed among them for our community to grow and thrive. The purpose of the Leadership 21 program is to improve the quantity, quality and effectiveness of leadership along the I-75 Growth Corridor by exposing current and future leaders to a broad cross section of the community. Now in its fourteenth year, Leadership 21 has opened and maintained constructive dialogue among all parties charged with making Liberty and West Chester Townships even better places to live and work. The program also builds upon long lasting business relationships gained by participation in the class. The next class of the Leadership 21 program will begin in September 2014 and will meet once a month through May 2015. Call Kenni Blaché, Director of Membership Services and Leadership 21 Facilitator, at 513.777.3600 for an application or more information. Heal expertly. This is what we were meant to do. What an amazing and dedicated group of civil servants! I encourage everyone to take the time to get to know them better because to me, they represent the heart and soul of our wonderful community. The day started with Captain Brian Rebholz (emcee for the day) introducing the West Chester Police Honor Guard and for those who appreciate military-like training and precision it’s a pleasure to watch. Did you know that our Honor Guard tied for 3rd place in a national competition and that in May of this year they’ll travel to Washington DC to participate in the Police Memorial Ceremony, standing guard and escorting family members of fallen officers? Did I mention they presented The Colors at Great American Ball Park on opening day? They represent West Chester Township and make us all proud! Immediately following the presentation of Colors, our new Chief of Police, Colonel Joel Herzog, welcomed us and gave an overview of our ‘action packed’ day! Our day continues with presentations from Lt. Dave Tivin in Criminalistics, Lt. Matt Beiser in Integrity and Development, Sgt. John Kleinfeldt in the Special Investigations Unit and Officer Mark York in Traffic Safety. I was really impressed with the amount of mathematics and physics that Officer Mark York uses to re-create traffic accidents to determine cause and fault. I also came away with an appreciation for abiding by posted speed limits. Here’s why. Let’s say you’re driving in a school zone during restricted hours. We all know the speed limit is 20MPH, but you’re going 30MPH. Can anybody tell me how much longer it takes to stop going 30MPH rather than 20MPH? You’ll be amazed. The difference between the total stopping distance going 20MPH vs 30MPH is 46 feet! That’s 15 yards more to stop by only going 10MPH more. Yikes, I’m slowing down. Next came my MOST favorite part, the SWAT/sniper demonstration and Fire Line Activity (they let us shoot guns) at the West Chester/Butler County Joint Firing Range. Sgt. Jeff Niehaus shared safety information and gave an overview then Sgt. Jamie Hensley demonstrated the love, care and discipline of the K-9 Unit and finally, Detectives Kyle Smith, Doug Farris, Jason Flick and Sgt. Hensley did a great SWAT demonstration where they cleared a structure room-by-room in about 30 seconds and then made a difficult sniper shot from 100+ yards out in less than 5 seconds with a perfect shot. Very impressive, I’m glad I’m on their side! We toured the impressive facility and saw armored SWAT vehicles (courtesy of apprehended bad guys, NOT tax money from good citizens) and a great Mark Welch, West Chester Township Trustee Vice demonstration by Officers We wrapped up the day with a tour President (far left) wrote this article as a member of Michelle Berling and Kevin of the Butler County Jail where Sheriff the Leadership 21 Class. Burger on Defensive Tactics. Jones educated us on all the crazy Here’s the scenario: Officer Burger played the part of an “over served” stuff that people do that leads to their incarceration, how they’re and belligerent guy who is causing trouble at a local watering hole. processed for entry and how they’re treated during their stay. What an Officer Berling is the responding police officer and confronts him. Oh, amazing and well run facility! and Officer Burger, the aggressor, is covered from head to toe with protective gear and body armor! The confrontation pursues and Officer Personally, I think law enforcement is a ministry and that the men and Berling, being a lady, beats him like a bad habit into submission and women who are in it are called to their service. The dedication, loyalty, restrains him. It sounds worse than it is because not only does she commitment and love of community are inspiring and I thank God for have her own safety in mind, but also the safety and well being of the their service. over served individual.
