GROUND BEEF - COOK ONCE, DINE TWICE
{or half now, half later}
1.Cooking
• To cook 2 pounds of Ground Beef, preheat a 12-inch nonstick skillet over medium heat until hot. Add Ground Beef; cook 8 to 10 minutes to 160°F, breaking up beef into ¾-inch crumbles and stirring occasionally. Remove drippings from skillet, if needed. Season with salt and pepper, as desired.
• Cooking times are for fresh or thoroughly thawed Ground Beef. Ground Beef should be cooked to an internal temperature of 160°F. Color is not a good indicator of Ground Beef doneness.
• 1 to 2 cups chopped onion or bell pepper, minced garlic, herbs or seasonings can be added during cooking.
• Divide cooked Ground Beef crumbles into two portions – about 2½ cups each. Use one portion immediately; freeze the other portion for later use.
2. Storing
•
•
•
•
•
•
Refrigerate or freeze cooked Ground Beef crumbles within 2 hours of cooking.
Store in shallow reuseable containers or quart-size food-safe plastic freezer bags.
To prevent freezer burn, eliminate as much air as possible when sealing the container or bag.
Label package with the date and number of servings.
Defrosting will be faster if beef is in a flat, thin layer.
Defrosted or cooked Ground Beef crumbles can be refrigerated for 3 to 4 days or frozen for 2 to 3 months.
3. Using & Reheating
•
•
•
•
•
Frozen or defrosted cooked Ground Beef crumbles can be added directly to favorite sauce and casserole recipes.
Ground Beef crumbles will reheat faster and more evenly when used in a saucy recipe such as spaghetti sauce, sloppy joes or casseroles.
Reheating recipes with frozen Ground Beef crumbles will take longer than for defrosted Ground Beef crumbles.
Always heat or cook Ground Beef crumbles in recipes to an internal temperature of 160°F.
Cover the pan and stir occasionally to ensure even and faster reheating.
4. Thawing
•
•
•
Frozen Ground Beef crumbles can be defrosted overnight in the refrigerator.
Sealed packages of Ground Beef crumbles can also be defrosted under cold running water or in the microwave oven according to manufacturer’s directions.
Never defrost Ground Beef on the counter at room temperature.
