number of businesses and organizations in the County. The mission of the Cape May County Chamber of

From the days in the 1600s when settlers came to southern New Jersey in search of whales to the 1950s, when
Chubby Checker put Wildwood on the map with his Peppermint Twist, Cape May County has a most interesting
past and an even more exciting future.
Family plots and rows of headstones in the cemetery of Cold Spring Presbyterian Church, affectionately referred
to as "Old Brick,” provide an accurate and intriguing glimpse of nearly 300 years of Cape May County history men who sailed the high seas, war heroes who never returned, families wiped out by typhoid and an amazing
number of people descended from those who arrived aboard the Mayflower. In fact, there are more descendants
buried here than anywhere outside of Massachusetts.
During the 1800s several Presidents summered in Cape May, often using Congress Hall as their Summer White
House. John Phillips Sousa played on the lawn of the grand hotel during the era when visitors arrived in this
seashore town by steamer and railroad. Located below the Mason Dixon Line, the county has often had a
southern feel to it, and nowhere is that more obvious than at the Chalfonte Hotel, a bastion of genteel summer
living and hospitality since the 1870s. Indeed, Cape May itself, with its collection of authentic Victorian homes,
most of them built after the Great Fire of 1878, is on the National Historic Register.
Cape May Court House is a historic town of century-old homes, white-steepled churches and the old court house
building, another National Historic Landmark, that gives the town its name and its identity. One of the
township's oldest homes, the John Holmes House (c. 1755), houses the Cape May County Museum, a repository
of history and artifacts from the days of the Lenni Lenape tribe through the settlement of the Southern New
Jersey area.
The county's nautical history is documented by the Cape May Lighthouse, built in 1859 at the entrance to
Delaware Bay, and the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse, constructed on the Atlantic Ocean side of the peninsula in
1874. Coastal fortifications from World War II, including an artillery bunker at Cape May Point and a fire
control tower used to direct fire at enemy targets off the coast, are being restored.
Today, the county is dotted from Upper Township to Lower Township, from Woodbine to the barrier islands,
with historic sites, old churches, one-room schools and other bits of history that continue to weave an interesting
story for future generations.
Southern New Jersey is easily accessible by road or air to more than 25 percent of the population of the United
States, an amazing statistic when you stop to think about it!
The Garden State Parkway and Routes 9 and 47 link the county with points north and west, while the Cape May
Lewes Ferry provides great service across Delaware Bay, connecting the state with points south.
Atlantic City International Airport (ACY) is a viable alternative to metropolitan airports in Philadelphia or
Newark and is easily reached from anywhere in Cape May County by the Garden State Parkway and Atlantic
City Expressway. Better parking, baggage handling and other improvements have made it convenient to fly in
and out of ACY on Spirit Airlines or Comair, the Delta Connection Carrier, with daily service to cities across the
country.
Three airports are located in the county in Ocean City, Woodbine and Rio Grande. The 700-acre Woodbine
Municipal Airport, in the northwest corner of the county, is operated by the Woodbine Port Authority and is open
to the public. The Cape May Airport, a 1000-acre general aviation airport in Rio Grande, has two runways, six
taxiways and three aircraft parking ramps. The facility is operated by the Delaware River and Bay Authority, and
traffic includes corporate aviation, recreational fliers, charter operators and small aircraft owners. The Ocean City
Municipal Airport is located at 25th Street and Bay Avenue and hosts pilot supplies, a gift shop and restaurant.
The Atlantic City airport is operated by South Jersey Transportation Authority, which also has oversight of the
Atlantic City Expressway.
The Expressway runs through South Jersey between Philadelphia and Atlantic City and connects with the Garden
State Parkway, the north-south highway that runs the length of New Jersey from Montvale at Exit 172 to Cape
May at Exit 0. The Parkway parallels the coastal communities in Southern New Jersey and is the primary route
visitors headed to those community resorts use, although Route 9 through much of Cape May County is an
alternative lined with historic homes, antique shops, farm stands and great scenery.
Route 47 into and out of the county links with Route 55, a two-lane divided highway that is toll free and often a
popular choice for people headed to and from the Philadelphia area.
For anyone using the Cape May Lewes Ferry from points south to reach New Jersey, “getting there” really is half
the fun. A 70-minute ferry ride across 17 miles of Delaware Bay links Cape May County with the Delaware side
of the bay. From the ferry terminal in North Cape May it's just a short ride to Cape May, the Wildwoods, Stone
Harbor, Avalon, Sea Isle City, Ocean City and Atlantic City. The ferry operates throughout the year, with daily
round-trip departures from Lewes, DE and Cape May.
Within Cape May County, a series of bridges link the barrier islands. For a scenic tour of the coastal areas of the
county, just follow “Flight of the Gull” signs from town to town.
Glide along the inland waterway in a kayak, pedal the length of the Boardwalk or tee up that ball for a round of
golf — from the beaches to the boards, the bike paths to the bay, more and more people are discovering the joys
of living right here in Cape May County, whether it's on a full-time basis or in that long-awaited second home.
For some baby boomers that have cashed in equity on family homes, it’s an issue of downsizing, while senior
citizens are often looking for less maintenance and more fun in their retirement years. Families, boomers and
seniors are all part of the changing demographics throughout the county.
Several new age-restricted developments, once only available in Florida, Nevada or California, offer homebuyers
choices about maintenance, social events and planned activities within adult communities. That said, Cape May
County is also a great place for families of all ages, from newlyweds to young families to those with teenagers or
anyone looking for a change of pace and a comfortable lifestyle.
Cape May County's natural assets offer abundant activities on a year-round basis. Walk the beach along the
barrier island communities as well as those towns that stretch north from Cape May along Delaware Bay, where
the sunsets rival those of Key West.
Hop on a bike and enjoy great exercise along bike paths and designated bike routes or slip that kayak or canoe
into the water and explore the back bay areas.
The increasing number of people owning homes or condos that include dockage also means an upswing in boat
sales and ownership. For the landlubbers who prefer golf, there are private clubs with excellent facilities or
public courses that are challenging and fun, regardless of handicap or ability.
Who doesn't love a night out? There's nothing better than a nice dinner, perhaps a bottle of wine, and stellar
service often accompanied by a great view. Cape May is definitely the culinary capital of the Garden State, but
there are plenty of great restaurants in the barrier island communities, inland from ocean to bay, ready to satisfy
your palate with fabulous food, Jersey fresh produce and plenty of local seafood.
The spirit of volunteerism is evident throughout Cape May County, as residents spend part of their leisure time
helping others and have always had a stellar reputation when it comes to serving the community. Many residents
volunteer their time supporting community, social, business, and arts organizations for worthy causes.
Whatever the reason or wherever the community, life in Cape May County is great!
The Ocean City Music Pier, located on the Boardwalk in Ocean City, is the home of the Ocean City Pops. The
Ocean City Pops, under the baton of maestro William Scheible, is the county's only resident orchestra — and
what a wonderful ensemble it is! The Music Pier, built 80 years ago, also hosts year-round entertainment, from
beauty pageants to big band concerts right on the beach.
The biggest and best names in jazz appear twice a year, April and November, courtesy of the Cape May Jazz
Festival, and of course, there's the six-week Cape May Music Festival that begins in mid-May with the Bay
Atlantic Symphony, chamber music, ensembles and vocalists. In the fall, it's the Cape May New Jersey State
Film Festival, a four-day event that often attracts some well-known and recognizable film stars, and is dedicated
to the presentation of film/video works by New Jersey filmmakers.
Cape May Stage and East Lynne Theatre Company, both professional Equity companies, perform from early
spring through December, with selections from a mid-summer Flying Solo Festival at Cape May Stage to
wonderful performances of classics of the American stage produced by the East Lynne Theater Company.
Throughout the year there is a host of tours in Cape May — walking or trolley — that include brunch,
architecture, history, and even a few ghosts — available through the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts.
Need more suggestions? Check out the events at the Wildwoods Convention Center, located on the beach,
featuring sporting events, comedy acts, concerts and more; or the Performing Arts Center, located just off the
Garden State Parkway in Middle Township, which hosts a variety of musical, theatrical and family events.
Access to Art provides several classical series bringing imaginative artists and visionary talent to the county,
while residents also contribute with community theater, outdoor concerts and art exhibits.
Historic Cold Spring Village is a living history museum, with a collection of actual buildings from around
southern New Jersey that have been moved to the Village, where visitors can see and experience life in the early
1800s.
A plethora of museums also adds to the county's culture base, helping to preserve the heritage of those who
settled in the county in the 1600s, the airmen who trained at Wildwood Naval Air Station during World War II,
the participants in the fabulous Doo-Wop era of the 1950s, and the Jewish immigrants who arrived in Woodbine
in the late 1800s.
The Cape May County Museum, located in the John Holmes House built in 1755, offers exhibits featuring
artifacts from the 17th to the 20th century.

With the opening of the Cape May County campus of Atlantic Cape Community College in 2005, educational
opportunities for residents in the county have moved into the 21st century. For the first time ever, students can
earn an associate degree in several disciplines — business, education, history, liberal arts and more — without
leaving home. The college faculty and the full-service, 29-acre campus on Dennisville Road in Cape May Court
House have added immeasurably to the quality of life for everyone in our county.
Throughout Cape May County, students from pre-kindergarten through high school experience excellent public
and private schools, teachers and strong educational programs. Many elementary schools continue to maintain a
small-town feel with a low student-teacher ratio, while regional high schools provide challenging academic
programs, enriching co curricular activities and competitive athletic offerings. Ocean City has recently completed
construction of a new school, and Lower Cape May Regional High School has added additional space to its
facility.
The Technical High School provides more than 20 specialized technical occupations from cosmetology to preengineering to culinary arts to welding for high school students from anywhere in the county. The school also
serves the needs of the adult learner with GED and basic skills classes, a demanding licensed practical nursing
program, an adult cosmetology class and other educational opportunities. A building program will increase the
number of students the school can serve with the addition of several new classes for high-demand occupations.
Ocean Academy, part of the Cape May County School for Special Services, educates children (ages 3 to 13) with
a wide range of learning disabilities. The high school program serves students with multiple handicaps with
highly individualized programs and an emphasis on career initiatives through the age of 21.
The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, close to residents in the northern part of the county and easily
accessible from the entire area, is a highly respected school that offers bachelor and master degree programs in a
wide variety of disciplines. The college's Performing Arts Center hosts nationally acclaimed musicians, dancers
and artists on a regular basis, adding to the school's value to the community. Rowan University, in neighboring
Gloucester County, and Rutgers, the state university in New Brunswick, also provide excellent programs with
undergraduate and graduate courses of study.

From boutiques to antiques to department stores to specialty shops, the many retail businesses in Cape May
County contribute to the economy and offer the fun and convenience of shopping close to home.
Along the Route 9 corridor in Middle Township, shopping facilities grow almost by the month. Ross, Lowe's,
Bed Bath & Beyond and other nationally known retailers have built new stores in Grande Plaza. Wal-Mart, just
to the north, is ready for a grand opening in 2007, joining an impressive list that includes Starbucks, Boater's
World, Stop and Shop Supermarket, Michael's Craft store and others along this stretch of highway. Additional
construction on the east side of Route 9 will provide space to even more stores and businesses.
Just beyond the intersection of Routes 9 and 47, Kmart continues to anchor the Rio Mall. East on 47, less than a
mile away, JCPenney, PetSmart, Peebles, Shop Rite, Fashion Bug and smaller retailers fill Rio Grande Plaza.
In Ocean City, Asbury Avenue is a year-round shopping area with music and antique shops, art galleries,
boutiques, florists and dining choices along the resort's main shopping artery.
More than a dozen quaint shops with adorable names like Preppy Palm, Jammin' Jellies and Cottage of Dreams
are linked by a beautifully landscaped walkway in Woodland Village along Route 9 in Clermont.
In Stone Harbor, the shopping area along 96th Street and Third Avenue offers an abundance of shops with trendy
fashions, unique jewelry, art work and just about anything you might need. Avalon's Dune Drive and other
nearby streets also offer boutiques, galleries and shops with clothing, accessories and upscale merchandise.
The Washington Street Mall in Cape May and Washington Commons across the street are filled with shops,
restaurants, galleries, cafes and more. Once the town's primary business district, the city converted four blocks
from Perry Street to Ocean Street into a pedestrian mall that anchors the resort's retail businesses, with additional
stores on Carpenter's Lane behind the mall.
For antique buffs, there are about 60 shops throughout the county from Cape May to Ocean City and inland along
Route 9. The Cape May County Department of Tourism lists locations with a map that matches numbered
locations on their website, www.thejerseycape.com.
Business opportunities abound for entrepreneurs offering products or services to a booming second home market
as well as a thriving tourism-driven economy.
Tourism and fishing are the catalysts for Cape May County, with over 90% of the county's employment based on
tourism connected businesses and the port of Cape May/Wildwood, the largest fishing port in New Jersey,
making a substantial impact on the local economy.
It's no surprise that tourism creates more than 30,000 seasonal jobs in a county where the population reaches
about 640,000 people in the height of the season. Cape May County ranks second in the state in tourism dollars
generated, including $2.2 billion in lodging, over $900 million in restaurants, $548 million in retail sales, $329
million in entertainment and another $100 million in transportation. Dollars generated a year ago totaled over $4
billion! The county ranks first in the state with over 43,000 seasonal second homes, another factor that
contributes to a tourism-based economy.
Tourism is followed closely by the fishing industry, with fleets of ships based in the port of Cape May/
Wildwood, one of the largest ports on the East Coast and the 5th largest port in the United States. Commercial
vessels fish year round, bringing in mackerel, fluke, sea bass, porgies, lobsters and scallops. Surf clams and
ocean quahogs are also caught here, then processed locally into chowders, sauces and other clam-related
delicacies. Cape May annually lands over 60 million pounds of fish valued at more than $36 million and
growing each year.
With a growing Baby Boomer population and an increasing number of senior citizens who have retired here,
health related careers are an in-demand occupation throughout the county.
The hospital, several extended care and rehabilitation centers plus home health and nursing services listed among
the county's top employers.
The county has also seen an increase in new businesses, especially those that provide needed services in the
construction, landscaping, computer and service-related businesses. Schools, along with county and municipal
governments also provide employment opportunities for county residents.
UNITED STATES COAST GUARD TRAINING CENTER CAPE MAY
The U.S. Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May, NJ, is the Nation’s only Boot Camp for enlisted personnel
in the Coast Guard.
In addition to training, several other Coast Guard Commands are located at Cape May. The Ships and Rescue
Craft that operate from this facility represent some of the diverse missions assigned to the Coast Guard
worldwide.
Training Center Cape May builds the enlisted corps by preparing America’s volunteers for success in the Coast
Guard. We provide apprentices who are willing and ready to learn their profession. We enhance the quality of
life and readiness of those we serve.

Each of Cape May County’s 16 municipalities is unique in size, population and government. The county has four
townships – Upper, Middle, Lower and Dennis; seven boroughs – Avalon, Cape May Point, Stone Harbor, West
Cape May, West Wildwood, Wildwood Crest and Woodbine, and five cities – Cape May, Ocean City, Sea Isle
City, North Wildwood and Wildwood. The county is governed by the Board of Chosen Freeholders – a fivemember elected board, as it has been for more than 300 years.
The majority of county offices and services are located in the Crest Haven Complex in Middle Township located
at exit 11 off the Garden State Parkway. The county clerk, surrogate and court offices are located on Main Street
(Route 9) in Cape May Court House.
The Cape May County Park and Zoo, located on Route 9 in Cape May Court House is considered by many as the
best zoo in the mid-Atlantic region. The zoo is home to over 100 species of animals including lions, bears,
camel, otters, and an Aviary. The park features picnic areas, a playground, nature trails, bike paths, baseball
fields, and fresh water fishing. The park and zoo are open daily, closed only on Christmas Day. Cape May
County Park/North located in Upper Township and Cape May County Park/South located in Middle Township
offer recreation fields and playgrounds.

Since Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital opened its doors in 1950 with 65 beds and just a few doctors, the
hospital has constantly expanded and improved to meet the health care needs of Cape May County residents and
visitors. Recently the hospital, located in the center of the county in Cape May Court House, joined forces with
the University of Pennsylvania Health System to provide expanded cancer and cardiovascular services. Through
membership in Penn's Cancer Network, patients now have access to all resources available through Penn's
Abramson Cancer Center. The prestigious affiliation has also enhanced and expanded Burdette's diagnostic,
therapeutic, and research capabilities for cardiac disorders including angina, acute myocardial infarction,
congenital heart disease and congestive heart failure.
In 2006, the Cape Community Health Center, a federally qualified health center, opened on Route 9 in Cape May
Court House to provide comprehensive primary care for the entire family with specialized services including
podiatry, cardiology, gastroenterology and gynecology with credentialed physicians and nurse practitioners. The
recent addition of OB and dental services gives patients affordable, quality medical care.
Volunteers in Medicine, located on Route 9 across from Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital, helps to provide
care to working people who have no health care insurance coverage. A caring staff sees people on an outpatient
basis with the financial support of the community and volunteer services.
For more than 40 years, Atlantic Medical Imaging has provided the most advanced diagnostic imaging services
to patients and referring physicians. Board-certified physicians educated and trained at such respected institutions
as Yale, Stanford, Duke and Johns Hopkins, and state-of-the-art technology that is constantly updated give
patients the best possible care.
Today, Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital is a fully accredited, 242-bed acute-care medical center that serves
an expanding local population and more than one million seasonal visitors with a variety of inpatient and
outpatient services. Because of these advances in healthcare through the hospital and other institutions, many
physicians affiliated with well known Philadelphia hospitals now have satellite locations and regular office hours
in the local area, offering patients the best in healthcare without leaving the county.
The county is fortunate to have several assisted living centers, as well as long-term care facilities, as part of its
health related services. Plus, medical office complexes around the county and several new urgent care centers
help ensure that doctors, services and top-notch healthcare are readily available to everyone in Cape May County.
People of virtually all religious denominations — Baptists, Methodists, Lutherans, Catholics, Jews and others —
trace their origins to the early days of Cape May County. That strong moral fiber has passed from generation to
generation throughout Cape May County. Today all religious denominations are well represented, and a spirit of
ecumenicalism adds to the quality of life.
Whether it's a small chapel used for services during the summer or the magnificent Catholic church that anchors
the Washington Street Mall in Cape May, congregations gather in their churches and synagogues to worship, help
others and strengthen their faith. Churches have also established several schools supported by their
congregations, and others generously share their parish halls with a variety of community programs that serve
youngsters, teenagers and senior citizens.
The county's history and its religious identity were forged centuries ago when several denominations and clergy
played a pivotal role in establishing communities based on their beliefs.
In 1879, three Methodist clergymen established a Christian seashore resort on Peck's Beach, the island that later
would become Ocean City. About the same time, several Presbyterians were organizing another religious-based
community called Sea Grove, now Cape May Point, at the southern most tip of the county. Both of these
settlements incorporated the tenets of their religion into the everyday lives of the people who eventually
populated these towns.
Many of the county's earliest settlers worshipped at the Cold Spring Presbyterian Church, fondly called Old
Brick, established in the early 1700s. According to church records, four presidents have attended services at the
church, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, as are many of the county's historic churches. The
Friends meeting house on Route 9, still in use, is even older, dating from about 1702.
Inland, the Baron de Hirsch Foundation helped European Jews leaving their homelands build a new life in
America with parcels of land where they could farm, raise a family and worship in peace and without fear of
pogroms. By 1896, the immigrants had built a synagogue that was used for nearly a century. Today, the
Brotherhood Synagogue is the Sam Azeez Museum of Woodbine that helps document and preserve the rich
history of more than 600 Jewish immigrant families from Eastern Europe who settled in Woodbine in the late
1800s and early 1900s. There is also an active synagogue, Beth Judah Temple, in Wildwood.
In Ocean City, the Tabernacle, the first permanent structure on the island to be used as a place of worship,
continues to hold services throughout the summer as it has for well over a hundred years, with world-renowned
speakers and clergy and a building that seats about 1400 people, in comfort and style the founders of this town
never could have envisioned.
