Very Contemporary Network of Contemporary Art venues in the Meuse-Rhine Euregion Bureau Europa, CIAP, ikob, Kunsthaus NRW, La Châtaigneraie, Ludwig Forum Aachen, Leopold-HoeschMuseum, Marres, Museum De Domijnen, NAK, SCHUNCK*, SPACE Collection, Van Eyck & Z33 are part of Very Contemporary www.verycontemporary.org Divided into five administrative regions with a total of 3.9 million people, the Meuse-Rhine Euregion comprises of three countries and languages. This Euregion is not so much shaped by its political borders, but rather by its inhabitants, who redefine the borders by living, studying and working here. Die Amerikaner. John de Andrea: Dorothy, 1969/70. Ludwig Forum, 2014. Photo: Kristof Vrancken The partners of Very Contemporary relate to each other through the language of contemporary art. Due to the geopolitical border situation, a range of reputable institutions for contemporary art can be found in the Euregion. These institutions have in common a peripheral geographical position, situated outside such traditional cultural centres as Amsterdam, Brussels or Cologne/Düsseldorf. This has encouraged the development of an individual and innovative approach to contemporary art, one that reflects the dynamic and interwoven history of the tri-border area around Aachen, Liège and Maastricht, allowing an insight not only into the local contemporary art scene, but also into European culture and society. Very Contemporary, the network currently made up of 14 Euregional contemporary art institutions, emphasizes the rich possibilities offered through the common language of art: within the field of contemporary art, the VC-network reflects on the ways of living together in a defined space, rethinking Europe on a Euregional scale. The border region of Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany is their training ground. Very Contemporary is a tri-national, cross-border network that organises itself to learn from each other by exchanging knowledge. Within its dynamic infrastructure tools and projects are developed to connect audiences and link art to other domains including science, technology and ecology. Future Fictions. Photo: Kristof Vrancken Very Contemporary functions as a training ground where participating institutions meet one another and learn from each other. The evolving and dynamic network provides an infrastructure where sustainable synergies are developed and generated. Through crosslinking content, marketing and art education, VC reinforces the institutions and boosts the impact of the various venues, by communicating their specific qualities and underlining their strengths. VC was founded in 2012 when the first VC-brochure including six initial partners was published on the occasion of Manifesta 9 in Genk (BE). Since then the brochure has been published twice-yearly, making the brochure you're now holding in your hands the ninth to be distributed on an euregional, national and international level. Alongside this analog tool, the VC-website www.verycontemporary.org, the monthly VC-newsletter and the social media presence of VC informs readers about current exhibitions and events. Come Close. Photo: Kristof Vrancken During the Very-Contemporary-Weekend that has already taken place for the past three years in late autumn, each institution realises art educational activities in accordance with their exhibitions, while a connection is offered between the different venues via Contemporary-Art-Bustours. The CABs offer a practical solution, since public transportation in the border region remains quite difficult. But it also goes further and effectively links audiences to new institutions, since it encourages visiting new venues on one's own terms and time. By activating crossborder exchanges, VC strengthens the cultural infrastructure of the Euregion, with the CAB acting as an already well established symbol. Very-Contemporary-Weekend On Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 November 2016 you get a new chance to learn about the current "state of art“ in the Meuse-Rhine Euregion in just one weekend. →→ →→ →→ A Contemporary-Art-Bus starts from every city of the VC-network. Eventually, the VC-network will be transformed from a distinct network of contemporary art venues to a finely-woven and more complex sphere, by multiplying and assembling the connections of art to science, technology and ecology, with the aim to maintain and expand the network, continue with research and exchange activities carried out in the past. A sphere, that will resonate on an international level, since its inner identity will be directly linked to the quality of its external connections, posing the question whether a European identity can be formulated via a cultural vehicle. Alongside the tools that have already been implemented, several stepping stones will be set out towards functioning together as a non-hierarchical sphere with art as its interdisciplinary link: → On Thursday 10 November 2016 the first VC-conference will take place, to which you are warmly invited. We aim to advance knowledge production and talent development in design and architecture while also engaging with a broad audience on the subject of understanding of their designed environment. We articulate these ambitions through cultural projects at our institute and in public domain. We focus primarily on a contemporary and social agenda of the Maas-Rhine Euroregion and Europe as a whole. The current shifts or turns in the use of textiles deal less with material aspects of the medium than with the temporal folds of concepts, metaphors, societies and economies. Textiles – ‘soft structures’ – have played an important role in economical and colonial history. As markers of trade they have intervened in the ‘hard structures’ of capital and politics, and they have initiated fundamental changes on social and economic levels. Textiles tell stories of commerce, of labour, of capitalism, of digital and social networks. A new Cabinet opens every first Thursday of the month. → → → CIAP is an independent association for contemporary art. CIAP was founded in 1976 and its operating methods are very comparable to the German model of the Kunstverein, a model that is not well known in Flanders. CIAP aims to respond to the local art scene in a 2-way direction, on the one hand by presenting form within the local context towards a larger (eu)regional public and on the other hand by boosting the local artists, art-professionals and public by showing innovative international artistic developments. ikob Jean Guillaume Ferrée - les lancumes lamplir, 1974-2005, (c) Dirk Dietrich Hennig ikob Museum für Zeitgenössische Kunst Rotenberg 12 B 4700 Eupen (Belgium) +32 87 56 01 10 [email protected] www.ikob.be open Wednesday → Sunday 13:00 → 18:00 10.08.2016 20.11.2016 DIRK DIETRICH HENNIG JAMAIS-VU – JEAN GUILLAUME FERRÉE ikob - Museum of Contemporary Art in Eupen presents the unjustly forgotten œuvre of Jean Guillaume Ferrée (1926-1974). The discovery of this artist, who worked within the vivid circles of FLUXUS and Nouveau Realisme, would have been an art historical sensation and the visitors would have met one of the most dazzling artists of the 20th century - if - but only if - this artist had been living in reality. In fact, he is an invention of the German artist Dirk Dietrich Hennig, who invented life, works and reception of Jean Guillaume Ferrée with all its tiny little details. 10.08.2016 20.11.2016 ROGER GREISCH 99 YEARS – 99 COLOURS Roger Greisch who would have been aged 99 this year is one of the best known and most popular painters in East Belgium. His art is until today marked by the presence of colours which he used to make both abstract and figurative works while cultivating a language of colour of his own. 2017 → For 2017 ikob – Museum of Contemporary Art announces a theme for its exhibition program: RESSENTIMENTS. Ressentiments – resentment/s in English – will be elaborated in political terms as well as in terms of aesthetics, i.e. artistic practices. It is of course a topic especially relevant to today's society. Yet the focus is less on aspects of racism and discrimination but on resentment as a common denominator in interpersonal relations. → → The ikob – Museum of Contemporary Art in Eupen is located in the German- speaking part of Belgium, close to the German and the Dutch border. Its program focuses on emerging and leading contemporary art through the constitution of a significant collection (in progress) and temporary exhibitions (in dialogue). Functioning as a discursive platform for contemporary art with its multidisciplinary and thematic exhibition program and concerned with critical and socio-political issues, the ikob attempts to reflect the matter of the frontier. The association of fourteen institutions in the Meuse-Rhine Region is as contemporary as the art they present. Within a radius of 100 km, the border region of Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands offers a wide variety of exhibitions and events, many of which can be visited in one day. The venues each have a highly individual approach and present art in the most appealing way: direct and inspirational, reflective and atmospheric. This brochure wants to increase the awareness of what this region has to offer in terms of visual arts. It is published twice a year and gives an overview of exhibitions and events.
