ATHLON /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// //////////////////////// ANSWERS TO THE PERPLEXING, PERVERSE AND PROBLEMATIC SPORTS QUERIES I HEARD THE NEW COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF WILL ALSO HAVE A NEW TROPHY. — Michael Matthews, Denver, Colo. • Designed by Pentagram (the same firm that designed the logo for “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”), the trophy features a focused football at the center of the base that rises to form an actualsized ball. It was an Olympics and World Cup year. Plus, Peyton Manning and LeBron James played for championships. What’s been the most expensive ticket in sports so far in 2014? — Sean Robinson, Lakeland, Fla. This one’s a little tough to pin down, but we feel safe in saying that a VIP package to the final game of the World Cup in Rio — which ran about $50,000 — will go down as the priciest ticket of 2014. For comparison’s sake, the top-end tickets for the inaugural College Football Playoff Championship Game will run you “only” $650. What’s the largest fine in sports history? — Tim Whitlock, Columbus, Ohio Here’s one area where the NFL doesn’t rule the sports roost. The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the governing body of Formula 1 Racing, fined McLaren Racing Team a staggering $100 million for spying on rival Ferrari in 2007 and excluded McLaren from the 2007 Constructors’ Championship. WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE? The new trophy is a sleek artistic statement crafted from 24k gold, bronze and stainless steel — a departure from the gaudy crystal football awarded by the BCS. Here are some factoids about the most coveted new trophy in sports: facebook.com/ AthlonSports @AthlonSports • Craftsmen at master fine art foundry Polich Tallix worked three months to make it. • Standing at a total height of three feet, the trophy and base are two integral but separate pieces, so the trophy can be lifted up independently by the championship team on Jan. 12, 2015. • The trophy is 26.5 inches tall and weighs 35 pounds. The bronze base is 12 inches high and weighs 30 pounds. When inserted into the base, the full trophy weighs 65 pounds. • Every year, a new trophy will be made. The winning school gets to keep it on permanent display. • The trophy is going on a season-long tour, visiting marquee games nationwide. Is there money awarded to players who win baseball’s MVP, Cy Young, Rookie of the Year, Manager of the Year and Gold Glove Awards? — Dee Mauntel, Russiaville, Ind. In a word, no. Recipients get a nice trophy, and the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, which chooses the winners (aside from the Gold Glove), will pay for their airfare and hotel when they come to New York City for the awards dinner in January. But no prize money. Of course, many players have incentives built into their contracts. For example, Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera will earn $2 million with another AL MVP award, and if he wins league MVP, the Hank Aaron Award and World Series MVP in the same season, he’ll cash in a $1 million bonus. THE 2014 PGA Centenary Course - Gleneagles Hotel Perthshire, Scotland; 7,262 yards, par 72 All-time record: U.S. leads 25–12–2 RYDER CUP After a miraculous comeback at the Ryder Cup Matches at Medinah in 2012, Europe is the prohibitive favorite to retain the Cup on home turf, as Tom Watson takes a shorthanded American team to Scotland for the most pressure-packed event in golf. Can a U.S. team led by crafty veteran Phil Mickelson and young gun Rickie Fowler upset a European powerhouse led by four-time major champion Rory McIlroy and Ryder Cup maestro Sergio Garcia? We’ll find out Sept. 26-28. TEAM USA Tom Watson, Captain Raymond Floyd, Andy North and Steve Stricker, Vice Captains Rickie Fowler (0-1-2) Keegan Bradley (Ryder Cup Record: 3-1-0)* Jim Furyk (9-17-4) Zach Johnson (6-4-1) Matt Kuchar (3-2-2) Hunter Mahan (3-2-3)* Phil Mickelson (14-18-6) Patrick Reed (First appearance) Webb Simpson (2-2)* Jordan Spieth (First appearance) Jimmy Walker (First appearance) Bubba Watson (3-5) THE TEAMS /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Although you weren’t on the 2012 team, do you sense any extra motivation to win after what happened at Medinah? You always want to go into those wanting to win, but with the way the last couple have gone, being on the losing side in ’10 and then watching the guys come up short on the final day there at Medinah, yeah, it gives us a little fire. ON TEAM USA’S MOTIVATION: “ NOT THAT THE U.S. DOESN’T GET ALONG, BUT I FEEL LIKE WE CAN WORK ON GETTING THE TEAM TOGETHER A LITTLE BIT BETTER AND SEE IF WE CAN ALL PULL TOGETHER AS A TEAM AND BRING THE CUP HOME. How tough was it not to be on the team the last time? It was a struggle … because of the pain that my back was giving me. I’m definitely pleased with what I’ve done fitness-wise, and I’ve put myself in a position now where I’m locked up for the Ryder Cup team and I can go ahead and play. What impact do you expect captain Tom Watson to have on the U.S. team? It will be cool to have him as a captain, and it will be a lot cooler if we’re able to bring the Cup back for him. TEAM EUROPE Paul McGinley, Captain Des Smyth, Sam Torrance, Padraig Harrington, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Jose Maria Olazabal, Vice Captains How is the pressure of the Ryder Cup compared to a major championship? I can safely say it (is) ten-fold the pressure at the Ryder Cup. You’re only letting yourself down by not taking care of it at a major championship. But you feel the fates of all your teammates and everything that goes into the Ryder Cup. Graeme McDowell (5-5-2) Thomas Bjorn (3-2-1) Jamie Donaldson (First appearance) Victor Dubuisson (First appearance) Stephen Gallacher (First appearance)* Sergio Garcia (16-8-4) Martin Kaymer (3-2-1) Rory McIlroy (4-3-2) Ian Poulter (12-3)* Justin Rose (6-3) Henrik Stenson (2-3-2) Lee Westwood (18-13-6)* *Captain’s pick 4 AthlonSports.com What about Gleneagles as a venue? First Ryder Cup (in Scotland) for many, many years. I’m expecting it to be pretty amazing. In match play, the golf course is less relevant than it is at a major championship. I’m all for the Ryder Cup being at iconic venues. But it’s more about the people and the atmosphere and the experience and the matches. You’ve played on two winning teams and one losing team. How do you view this one? I’m getting to the veteran stage and I feel like I can definitely be a decent sort of leader for the young guys on the team. “ //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// — TEAM USA’S RICKIE FOWLER /////////////// MISSING IN ACTION //////////////// Tiger Woods (Ryder Cup Record: 13-17-3) Despite his lackluster Ryder Cup record, Tiger’s experience and aura will be missed. Said one PGA Tour pro: “You can’t tell me at least half the European side would not be a little afraid if it came down to a singles match against Tiger on Sunday.” Dustin Johnson (Ryder Cup Record: 3-3) Johnson is in golf exile, either self-imposed or Tour-imposed, while he deals with “personal challenges.” He went 3-0 in the 2012 matches. Jason Dufner (Ryder Cup Record: 3-1) Dufner couldn’t defend his 2013 PGA Championship title due to an arthritic condition in his neck. When it was over, our shirts were stained, our bellies were full and our minds were made up. Here are the four sauces that won over our taste buds. A REAL MASTERPIECE ON OUR HONEY-DO LIST ORIGINAL FLAVOR (STUBB’S) Named for its creator, barbecue legend C.B. Stubblefield, this Texas-style sauce blew us away. Its mixture of tangy tomato, vinegar, molasses and black pepper made for an initial spicy kick followed by a sweet aftertaste. KANSAS CITY CLASSIC (CATTLEMEN’S MASTER’S RESERVE) It’s a nice heavy sauce with a smoky aroma and aftertaste, punctuated by a slight peppery twang. The spicy kick mixes perfectly with a hint of sweetness to balance out the flavor. “I COULD DRINK THIS SAUCE OUT OF THE BOTTLE.” “I LIKE A SPICY SAUCE, AND THIS DELIVERED.” “PERFECT FOR BRUSHING ON GRILLED CHICKEN.” OH BABY! ORIGINAL FLAVOR (SWEET BABY RAY’S) It may be the king of the sauces. Perfected in 1985 by a Chicago chef, it offers a straightforward barbecue flavor that’s perfect to apply on the grill or afterwards. Ironically though, it wasn’t very sweet. “VERY VERSATILE. IT WAS GREAT ON EVERYTHING.” /leejeans THICK’N SPICY HONEY (KRAFT) After tasting several sauces with “smack you in the face” flavors, it was nice to ease into this. This slow-simmered sauce offered a hint of honey mixed with a nostalgic barbecue flavor. The only thing missing? You. That’s because a 5 kilometer (about 3.1 miles) or 10 kilometer (about 6.2 miles) race may seem like a brutal trek, especially if your running regimen consists of the occasional sprint to first base. To get you moving the right way, we asked GREG MCMILLAN, coach of Olympic long-distance runner Andrew Lemoncello and founder of McMillan Running Company, to give us his best tips for hitting the pavement safely and effectively. TRAIN 6 WEEKS OUT FOR A 10K “You can do it in four if you have some athletic history (or if you’re only doing a 5K), but the more time, the better.” RUN FOR TIME, NOT DISTANCE “Start with one or two runs each week, 10-20 minutes, then work up to 2-4 days per week. Work up to 45 minutes to an hour of running by race day, especially if you’re running a 10K. If you get tired, take a one-minute walking break every three or four minutes.” 3 4 5 STRETCH AFTER THE RUN “If you’re too warmed up to start the run you’ll go out too hard.” 7 DON’T WORRY ABOUT YOUR RACE TIME “Break up the monotony with some Fartlek runs. Run easy for 10 minutes, then run one minute at a brisk pace (not sprinting), then recover by jogging slowly for one minute, then alternate 10 times and work your way up to 20 times at the end of your training runs.” GET FITTED BY A PRO “There are so many different runners who require vastly different shoes. It’s important to go to a specialty running store and get an idea of what shoe will work for you.” DON’T CARB LOAD BEFORE THE RACE “The one thing you don’t want to do is change anything the day before or the day of your race. The Santa Clara, Calif., venue, which seats approximately 68,500, is more than just a place to catch a game; it’s a blueprint for the future. Here’s why… BY BILLY BROWN IT’S WIRED! DROUGHT FRIENDLY You’re never more than 10 feet away from a wireless hotspot. Seventy miles of Wi-Fi specific cable offer 40GB/s of bandwidth (40 times more than any other stadium). Which is good, because… All plumbing fixtures are low flow, almost twice as efficient as building codes require, and 85 percent of the water used is recycled water provided by the city. Stadium: Daniel Gluskoter/CSM/Landov Phone and Hot Spot: San Jose Mercury News/MCT/Landov; Wagyu: MGM Resorts International YOU’RE PLUGGED IN EAT UP! Vegan franks, curry stations, crepe desserts and chef Michael Mina’s onsite Bourbon Steak & Pub restaurant give “stadium food” a whole new meaning. They even have the craziest hot dog in sports: an $18 Double Barrel Wagyu topped with pork chicharrones. The 49ers’ new app lets you order food for pickup or have it delivered to your seat (for an extra $5), gives you turn-by-turn directions to bathrooms, and allows access to real-time instant replays from at least six different angles. IT’S GREEN The natural grass stadium has 38,000 square feet of solar panels to soak up the sun and keep it running on its own electricity. Plus, a 27,000-square-foot garden on the roof of the suite tower consists of local plants to soak up heat and grow herbs for the concession stands. The lower bowl has over 45,000 seats (one of the largest in the NFL), and the glass-fronted box seats on the West side provide a reverberating effect. The result could spell an end to Seattle’s title as the NFL’s loudest stadium. IT'S LOUD! IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: Do not stop taking ELIQUIS for atrial fibrillation without talking to the doctor who prescribed it for you. Stopping ELIQUIS increases your risk of having a stroke. ELIQUIS may need to be stopped, prior to surgery or a medical or dental procedure. Your doctor will tell you when you should stop taking ELIQUIS and when you may start taking it again. If you have to stop taking ELIQUIS, your doctor may prescribe another medicine to help prevent a blood clot from forming. ELIQUIS can cause bleeding, which can be serious, and rarely may lead to death. You may have a higher risk of bleeding if you take ELIQUIS and take other medicines that increase your risk of bleeding, such as aspirin, NSAIDs, warfarin (COUMADIN®), heparin, SSRIs or SNRIs, and other blood thinners. Tell your doctor about all medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. While taking ELIQUIS, you may bruise more easily and it may take longer than usual for any bleeding to stop. Get medical help right away if you have any of these signs or symptoms of bleeding: - unexpected bleeding, or bleeding that lasts a long time, such as unusual bleeding from the gums; nosebleeds that happen often, or menstrual or vaginal bleeding that is heavier than normal - bleeding that is severe or you cannot control - red, pink, or brown urine; red or black stools (looks like tar) - coughing up or vomiting blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds - unexpected pain, swelling, or joint pain; headaches, feeling dizzy or weak ELIQUIS is not for patients with artificial heart valves. Spinal or epidural blood clots (hematoma). People who take ELIQUIS, and have medicine injected into their spinal and epidural area, or have a spinal puncture have a risk of forming a blood clot that can cause long-term or permanent loss of the ability to move (paralysis). I was taking warfarin. But ELIQUIS was a better find. I TAKE ELIQUIS® (apixaban) FOR 3 GOOD REASONS: 1 2 3 ELIQUIS reduced the risk of stroke better than warfarin. ELIQUIS had less major bleeding than warfarin. Unlike warfarin, there’s no routine blood testing. Bereswill/Newscom Derek Jeter used to say that playing under the lights at the old Yankee Stadium — with the field so vividly illuminated, and the crowd a bit shrouded in darkness — made him feel as if he were performing on Broadway. For two decades, his show has been a hit in the Bronx. But now he is leaving the stage. As Jeter prepares for his final curtain call, he bows out with more than 3,400 hits, a top-10 ranking on the career list for hits and runs scored, five World Series championships and endless goodwill in New York and beyond. “If you were sitting two decades ago and you said, ‘Boy, this is a guy that I want to be the face of baseball and be what this generation will remember,’ you couldn’t have written a script like this,” said Commissioner Bud Selig, on the day of Jeter’s final All-Star Game this July. “How lucky can this sport be to have the icon of this generation turn out to be Derek Jeter?” I WANT TO THANK THE GOOD LORD FOR MAKING ME A YANKEE. AthlonSports.com 11 Part of Jeter’s brilliance has been his savvy approach to his public persona. Players admire him not only for his grace on the field, but also for how smooth he is off it. He keeps his personal life private, despite playing in New York. “He was the guy I looked up to all the time,” said Carlos Correa, one of baseball’s top prospects and the No. 1 overall pick of the Houston Astros in 2012. “He was great on the field and he was even better outside the field. That’s the guy I want to be compared to.” “You didn’t have to tell Derek, because he owned up to it if he made a mistake,” said Larry Bowa, the Yankees’ infield coach in 2006-07. “He never made excuses. I’d see a ball take a bad hop on him, and he comes up and says, ‘I’ve gotta catch that ball.’” Jeter, the Yankees’ captain, would laugh at the assumption that he was merely a leader by example. He showed that he would stand up for his values when he confronted veteran pitcher David Wells in a 1998 game. Late in that season, the Yankees welcomed the Toms River, N.J., Little League team onto the field for the national anthem. Toms River had just won the Little League World Series, and one of their stars, Todd Frazier, lined up with Jeter. Frazier grew up to be an All-Star third baseman for the Cincinnati Reds and worked out with Jeter in Florida one winter. That year, the Yankees played the Reds. “He kind of winked at me, gave me a fake bunt because he was the first batter of the game,” Frazier said. “So he remembered. Jeter’s guarded, sometimes bland image often makes him seem like simply a collection of superlatives. We know he has been by all accounts, a pleasant and charitable man. But where, beyond the words, is the evidence? Everywhere, actually. It was there before his rookie season, in 1996, when the Yankees’ new manager, Joe Torre, declared Jeter as his starting shortstop. Jeter responded by saying he was grateful for the opportunity to win the job. “In his mind, he had to earn the right to be the shortstop,” Torre said. “In my mind, I was giving him the right to be the shortstop. It’s different. That impressed me.” When Jeter would make an error or mental mistake, he would sit next to Torre in the dugout, ready for whatever his manager had to say. He would continue that trait for years. 12 AthlonSports.com “Seinfeld” guest star, 1996 George Costanza’s abstinence from sex makes him so smart that he’s able to give batting advice to Jetes and Bernie Williams. He offered a word of advice to the Jeter generation. “I have heard some players around the league say they’ve tried to pattern their game after him, and the biggest thing they need to watch, if they do want to idolize him, is how hard he has played the game,” Butterfield said. “I’ve never seen a time where he has let up on a routine ground ball running from home to first. The way a guy runs the bases, for me, speaks a lot about his character.” That combination of talent and makeup — the flair to make stylish plays on the field, and the maturity to carry himself with a kind of smooth grace off it — has made Jeter enormously popular. He sees this not just from fans, but also from teammates’ children. Jeter has no children of his own, but he has a knack for interacting with them seamlessly, treating them almost as peers. “My son loves him because of how good he was to him and how well he treated him and how funny he was,” said former Yankee Raul Ibanez, 42. “He used to rag me all the IN HIS MIND, HE HAD TO EARN THE RIGHT TO BE time about my age. Cooperstown, N.Y. T he National Baseball Hall of Fame and the U.S. Mint have just released the FIRST EVER curved American coin. This legal tender half dollar has been struck to honor the 75th anniversary of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. First Ever Curved American Coin The coin’s curved design is a first in American history. The outward curing ‘tails’ side of the coin depicts a baseball— complete with intricate stitching. The inward curing ‘heads’ side of the half dollar reveals a classic leather baseball glove, with the curve perfectly reflecting the natural shape of a weathered and well-loved baseball mitt. Among the celebrity judges who selected this FIRST EVER curved design were Hall of Famers Joe Morgan, Brooks Robinson, Ozzie Smith, Don Sutton, and Dave Winfield. The curved design is like nothing you have ever seen before. You won’t believe it when you hold it!
