Open Letter from the President/
Chairperson for the Booklet
October 2007
Dear Friends:
Welcome to the 31st annual
celebration of Italian Heritage
and Culture Month. This year
we will celebrate the 200th anniversary of Giuseppe Garibaldi’s birth. Therefore, the Board of Directors has selected
“Giuseppe Garibaldi: Eroe Dei Due Mondi – Hero of Two
Worlds” as the official theme for the celebration.
Giuseppe Garibaldi was a gifted patriot and republican
leader, who from an early age performed a most important
role in the unification of Italy. He traveled worldwide and
spent years in South America and North America as he
wanted to free the country of Italy from Austrian rule and
unite it as a republic. A full biography is included elsewhere in this very brochure so as to help you appreciate
the details of his rich life.
Born in Nice, then a part of Italy, on July 4, 1807, Garibaldi was a bold and active leader, and was exiled from
Italy and spent two of those years in America from 185153, right here in the New York City area on Staten Island
with his newfound friend: Antonio Meucci, the discoverer/inventor of the telephone. It was right there on Staten
Island that Giuseppe Garibaldi planned for his future and
primary objective, which was the unification and independence of Italy.
Garibaldi’s dream of a united and independent Italy was
finally realized thanks to the efforts of the other two
champions of the Risorgimento, Mazzini and Cavour,
which culminated in the formation of a unified kingdom
of Italy under King Victor Emmanuel of Sardinia. Garibaldi died on June 2, 1882, at Caprera, Sardegna, where
thousands visit the burial site annually, myself among
them.
7
What a coincidence that Giuseppe Garibaldi was born on
a day of great importance for all Americans, our Fourth of
July, and died on another important day for Italians, June
2nd, the day of the establishment of the Republic. Yes,
true, the years were different but the days/dates of July
4th and June 2nd are undeniably historic for us all.
This year, in keeping with the theme, many of our activities will focus on Garibaldi, as well as other important figures of the Risorgimento. In addition, the contribution of
many Italians will be emphasized by all Italian and Italian
American organizations in the Greater New York area at
the various symposia, lectures, proclamation ceremonies
and events they are currently developing for Fall 2007.
You are enthusiastically and wholeheartedly invited to
join us in this celebration to partake of, and participate
in, as many activities listed in the calendar of events as
you can. With us, the members of the Italian Heritage and
Culture Committee – NY, Inc., a Board second to none in
its enthusiasm and grace of life as Italophiles - I enjoin
you to celebrate!
Grazie a tutti e buon divertimento!

Whereas, the Empire State recognizes the
contribution made by the people of Italian ancestry
both past and present –living here in America and in the
homeland – who throughout the course of time have had
a profound influence on mankind and during the month
of October, we join in the celebration of Italian Heritage
and Culture Month and a rich history rooted in an ancient
civilization, as all Italian Americans look forward to a
future of continued success and accomplishment; and
Whereas, history is testimony to the valuable
contributions Italians have been made to the cause of
freedom and democracy, and the names of revered Italians
such as Giuseppe Garibaldi have been inscribed in books
highlighting great military heroes, and in celebrating his
life and legacy as the theme of this year’s Italian Heritage
and Culture Month, we are reminded that this particularly
brave and patriotic Italian referred to as the “Hero of
Two Worlds,” nobly served his nation in leading military
campaigns that brought about the formation of a unified
Italy and later led military expeditions in South America
and Europe, and even volunteered his service to President
Lincoln during the civil War; and
Whereas, both in name and in spirit, Giuseppe
Garibaldi is remembered as an impassioned proponent
of Italian unification who demonstrated a tireless
commitment to the cause of precious liberty and his
legacy is and inspiration to freedom-loving people
throughout the world; and
Whereas, joining causes dedicated to social and
political reform, Garibaldi formed the Italian Legion
9
and led battles in the fight for freedom of Italy and other
countries of the world, which made him and his followers
heroes in Italy, South America, and Europe; and
Whereas, Garibaldi offered Pope Pius IX the services
of the Italian Legion and he returned to Italy amid the
turmoil of 1848, taking up command of the defense of
Rome – however, with the City’s fall, Garibaldi fled and
eventually came to live in New York in 1850, where he
stayed until his return to Italy in 1854 and he continued
his vigorous support for Italy in its quest for freedom as
well as the freedom of other countries, and he was hailed
by the King of Italy, Victor Emmanuel II, as the revered
patriot and hero that he is remembered as to this day; and
Whereas, it is fitting that all New Yorkers join during
this month long celebration of Italian pride in honoring
Giuseppe Garibaldi’s courage, intellect and ardent
devotion to the cause of liberation for Italy as well as
other countries;
Now, Therefore, I, Eliot Spitzer, Governor of the
state of New York, do herby proclaim October 2007 as
ITALIAN HERITAGE AND CULTURE MONTH
in the Empire State.
Given under my hand and
the Privy Seal of the State
at the Capitol in the City of
Albany this sixteenth day of
July in the year two thousand
seven.

Whereas, Brooklyn is still, and will always be, one
of the largest Italian-American centers in the United
States – and is the largest if we include the residents of
Brooklyn’s southwester suburb: Staten Island – it is most
fitting to recognize our Italian-American community and
take note of the important cultural, political and social
aspects of Italian heritage that have greatly enriched the
quality of life in our borough; and
Whereas, during the New York City-wide celebration of Italian Heritage and Culture Month, in honor
of Giuseppe Gribaldi, leader of the military campaigns
bringing about the formation of a united Italy, Brooklyn
residents gather to celebrate the rich Italian heritage found
throughout our great borough, and to pay tribute to distinguished citizens of Italian descent who have made outstanding contributions to the betterment of our borough,
state and nation; and
Whereas, on behalf of all Brooklynites, I salute and
commend the Honorable Francesco Maria Talò, Consul
General of Italy in New York, the officers and members
of the Board of Directors of New York’s Italian Heritage
and Culture Month Committee, and our borough’s proud
Italian-American community for their many outstanding
achievements, as we honor and acknowledge the great
significance of the contributions during Italian Culture
Month;
Now, therefore, I, Marty Markowitz, President of the
Borough of Brooklyn, do hereby proclaim the month of
October, 2007
11
Italian Heritage and Culture Month
In Brooklyn, USA
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the
seal of the Borough of Brooklyn to
be affixed this 11th day of October,

•
Eroe dei Due Mondi: Hero of Two Worlds
In honor of the bicentennial of the birth of Giuseppe
Garibaldi, Father of a Unified Italy, Ted H. Jacobsen,
Secretary of the New York City Central Labor Council,
Mason and philatelist, was inspired to design and print
a personalized United States Postal Service stamp to
commemorate Garibaldi’s birth.
The stamp was inaugurated on July 4 (the date of
Garibaldi’s birth in 1807) in the only city in North
America (Canada, United States, Mexico) to be named
after this charismatic soldier of liberty. The City of
Garibaldi is in Oregon, right on the Pacific Coast.
Garibaldi would have been thrilled because he loved the
sea. Born in Savoy Nice, in his early years he worked on
his father’s boat and later plied the seas delivering cargo
as far away as Russia. In his early twenties, Giuseppe
would escape with his life from Italy to Brazil and
Uruguay (each currently has a city named Garibaldi),
having participated in a failed insurrection against the
occupying Austrians in Northern Italy. The history of
Giuseppe Garibaldi is both fascinating and complex:
his life in South America, his return to liberate the Two
Sicilies and unite them with the Kingdom of Italy and
15
Victor Emanuel II, his sojourn on Staten Island after the
death of his beloved Anita and his return to help complete
his vision for a United Italy.
In association with the Italian Heritage and Culture Month
Committee of New York City, the Garibaldi-Meucci
Museum on Staten Island and the Masonic Stamp Club
of New York, a special stamp cancellation ceremony
by the U.S. Postal Service was held at the GaribaldiMeucci Museum on Saturday, July 21, 2007. Immediately
following, Dr. Frank Alduino, Professor of History at
Anne Arundel Community College in Maryland, delivered
a lecture on Garibaldi.

The Value of Worthless Lives: Writing Italian American
Immigrant Autobiographies
October 4
6:00 pm
“Immigrants left behind sweat and tears, but no
memories,” wrote the Italian scholar Giuseppe Prezzolini,
in his search for first-person accounts of Italian
immigration to the United States. He found none. Yet
immigrants, even if barely literate, did in fact record
their lives in autobiographies that have been overlooked
33
and ignored. Ilaria Serra, Florida Atlantic University
has gathered these works in her book The Value of
Worthless Lives. She offers a theoretical analysis of these
unorthodox narratives, which survived history. Light
refreshments will be served. Seating is limited. This is

EROE DEI DUE MONDI
HERO OF TWO WORLDS
Cut along dotted LIne
Giuseppe Garibaldi led many of the military campaigns that brought about the formation of a unified
Italy. He is called the “Hero of the Two Worlds,” in
tribute to his military expeditions in South America
and Europe.
Garibaldi was born on July 4, 1807 in the former
Italian city of Nice, taken under French control in
1860. Garibaldi's family was involved in coastal trade
and he was certified in 1832 as a merchant marine
captain.
During a visit to Taganrog, Russia, in April 1833 he met
Giovanni Battista Cuneo, a member of the secret
movement “Young Italy” (La Giovine Italia). Garibaldi
joined and took an oath for the liberation of Italy from
Austrian dominance.
In Geneva in November 1833, Garibaldi met
Giuseppe Mazzini, an impassioned proponent of
Italian unification as a liberal republic through political and social reforms. He joined the Carbonari revolutionary association and in 1834 he participated in a
failed Mazzinian insurrection in Piedmont, and was
sentenced to death in absentia by a Genoese court.
He escaped to Tunisia eventually finding his way to
Brazil, where he encountered Anna Maria Ribeiro da
Silva, “Anita,” a woman of Portuguese and Indian
descent, who became his companion in arms, and
wife.
In 1843 Garibaldi formed the Italian Legion, whose
black flag represented Italy in mourning while the
volcano at its center symbolized the dormant power
in their homeland. While in Uruguay the legion first
sported the red shirts, which became the symbol of
Garibaldi and his followers.
Garibaldi victories in the battles of 1846 assured the

freedom of Uruguay and made him and his followers
heroes in Italy and Europe.
With the election of Giovanni Mastai-Ferretti as
Pope Pius IX in 1846, Garibaldi offered the papal
nuncio the service of his Italian Legion for the liberation of the peninsula. Garibaldi returned to Italy
among the turmoil's of the revolutions of 1848. At
Mazzini's urging, Garibaldi took up the command of
the defense of Rome. His wife, Anita, fought with
him. The city fell on June 30, 1849, and Garibaldi
was forced to flee to the north. Anita died near
Ravenna during the retreat.
In 1850 he became a resident of New York, where
he met and lived with Antonio Meucci. For some
time he worked and lived as a candle maker on
Staten Island. Afterward he made several voyages to
the Pacific, during which he visited Andean revolutionary heroine Manuela Sáenz in Peru. Garibaldi
returned to Italy in 1854. In 1859, the AustroPiedmontese War broke out and Garibaldi was
appointed major general. He formed a volunteer
unit, the “Hunters of the Alps.” At the war's end
Garibaldi was displeased because Nice was ceded to
the French. In 1860 Garibaldi defeated a 3,000strong Bourbon French garrison at Calatafimi on
May 13. The next day, he declared himself dictator
of Sicily in the name of Victor Emmanuel II of Italy.
In his famous meeting with Victor Emmanuel II at
Teano on October 26, 1860, Garibaldi greeted him
as King of Italy and shook his hand. Garibaldi rode
into Naples at the king's side on November 7, then
retired to the rocky island of Caprera, refusing to
accept any reward for his services.
At the outbreak of the American Civil War (1861),
Garibaldi volunteered his services to President
Lincoln and was invited to serve as a major general
in the Union Army. Garibaldi took up arms again in
1866 against Austria-Hungary in the hope of taking
Venetia from Austrian rule. After the war, Garibaldi
led a political party that agitated for the capture of
Rome, the peninsula's ancient capital. Following this,
he spent the remainder of his life on Caprera and
died on June 2, 1882.

“Recent Scholarship on Contemporary ItalianAmerican Youth”
October 25
1:00 pm
“Italian-American youth” constitutes a category that has
been ascribed with symbolic, iconic, and even mythic
attributes. Historic cinematic depictions of ItalianAmerican teenagers were broadly painted caricatures
of the male juvenile delinquent and his sexually active
female counterpart, while current television images have,
to some degree, been mollified. Second-generation
Italian-American youth in the first half of the twentieth
century has been the subject of scholarly research by
historians and other social scientists who have explored
topics such as the often-contentious relation with
immigrant parents. “What of Italian-American youth
today? This symposium brings together six scholars from
diverse disciplines that are investigating various aspects
of contemporary Italian-American youth. They look at
the ways in which Italian-American adolescents and
young adults negotiate the social and cultural landscapes
that involve educational achievement, employment
opportunities and patterns of stress, as well as mass
media, popular music consumption and cultural style.

Galileo: A Visit from the Starry Messenger
October 13
When people consider the gifts that Italy has given the
world, what usually comes to mind is her genius for
the domestic, fine, and creative arts: delicious food,
fine wines and glorious operas, and her magnificent
architectural wonders like St. Peter’s basilica and the
city of Venice. But science should also be on our list
of Italian contributions to culture, for one of the most
influential scientists who ever lived was an Italian. The
seventeen-century Italian astronomer, Galileo Galilei,
who agreed to leave his home in Pisa to come to the
Montfort Academy and discuss his many discoveries,
including a demonstration of his new device for observing
heavens – the telescope. Presented by Michael T. Francis
who portrays Galileo and the Stargazer’s Apprentice
using over twenty years of professional acting experience.

Poem Dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi
Presented by Nella Talamini on Thursday, July 19,
2007, on the occasion of the commemoration of the trip
Garibaldi made in 1849, as he was on route to Venice.
In front of “Sacca degli Scardovari,” near Magnavacca
(Porto Garibaldi), two navy units of the Ravenna and
Chioggia Harbor Master’s Office, a company of sea
boats side by side, hosted a ceremony in the presence
of military and civil authorities in memory of the heroic
event of 1849. On board, Cav. Joseph Sciame, President
of Garibaldi celebrations in the United States, along with
civil and military authorities, guests, press and two female
marine guards, took part in the launching of the “corona”
of flowers into the sea, preceded by a reading of the
following poem, written by the artist “Nella Talamini.”
Garibaldi
Obbedendo talvolta a capo chino
come un romano andato all’Aventino.
Comandando la vita e anche la morte
di giovani decisi a cambiar sorte.
Ed i piedi su navi tante volte
Giuseppe Garibaldi.

Garibaldi
If I had to tell my story
I’d talk of the sea that is about:
Caprera is an islet in the creation
But the sea from the shore is ever alike
And so is the saltiness around.
No matter where you’ve been
On top of the world
(And Americas were far away)
You’ve seen fishes darting on
Like arrows pointing at your destiny.
A future of fights and struggles
Of flights and unexpected returns
In the scent of gunpowder
Amidst the glittering of swords and rifle-shots.
Pursuing one dream and one idea:
Unity for Italy and the whole world.
Obeying at times with a bowed head
Like a Roman ascending to the Aventine.
Ruling over life as well as death
Of young men determined to change their lot.
And my foot on ships now and again
I set with my “Red Shirts”
And flags to the wind by many I unfolded
And smokes from the cannons shaking them.
Now, as an old man, I think back of my Nizza
That was Italian and then was lost
In my heart it stays amongst my treasured memories.
My name? Giuseppe Garibaldi.
Nella Talamini
