Welcome to the

Italian Feast
A Religious
Celebration
Honoring
Our Lady of
Mt. Carmel
On behalf of
Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish-Shrine,
the Feast Committee welcomes you
to the 122nd year honoring
our Blessed Mother.
For over a century, the Feast Committee has been promoting
the devotion to our Blessed Mother under the
ancient title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
Year in and year out, these committed men spend countless hours
and a lot of effort in order to make out of every Feast a huge success.
May la Madonna del Carmine shower abundance of Graces
over all these devoted men and may this beautiful tradition
continue to inspire many more in the years to come.
Dear Friends of Our Lady of Mount Carmel,
It is my pleasure to extend each one of you with a
cordial greeting. As we gather today to experience
friendship, devotion and gratitude, let us not forget
this special event marks the beginning of our
122nd anniversary in the yearly festivities honoring la Madonna del Carmine.
Year in and year out, for over a century, the
devotees of our Lady gather during summer to
Rev. Miguel Álvarez, cs
express their love and deep-rooted dedication to
Mary the Mother of Christ under her ancient title of “Flower of Mount
Carmel”. In Melrose Park, we have been blessed with a lovely image of
our lady. For over a century that most precious flower has become the
point of attraction for thousands and thousands of people. Many of us
look forward to the day when her beautiful image and that of her divine
child, visit our streets and homes during the yearly procession, such an
incredible tradition brings her so close to the many who year after year
look forward to see her pass by their house. Many generations have
experienced this incredible blessing and it is our desire that such an
incredible experience may become part of the life of many more generations to come.
Tonight we gather to officially inaugurate our festivities and we do so
honoring a man whose dedication, commitment and hard work demonstrate both his devotion to our Lady, as well as his profound love for
our church. Gary Marine has been a key factor in the many different
activities we have accomplished in the maintenance, restoration and
refurbishment of our facilities. Countless hours of hard work and endless moments of creative advice have been his constant gift for our faith
community. God bless you Gary, it is my prayer that many more will be
inspired by your testimony and in turn become active members of our
faith family.
Every year, we also select a candle house for the “Candle House
Recognition Award”. In doing so it is our intent to extend our gratitude
to the many families, societies of parish groups that join our yearly procession making it one of the largest and most beautiful public expressions of faith in the archdiocese of Chicago. The award goes this year
to the Principe/Nocita/Zito Rosary Candle House. Thank you for being
part of this stunning religious tradition, may you continue to walk with
us while experiencing the intercession of our heavenly mother.
This year marks the beginning of a tradition that I hope will last for
many years to come. We have decided to begin acknowledging with a
special recognition all those individuals or groups who are part of our
Faith family and contribute to enhance our religious life. Many are the
hidden heroes, ordinary people whose love and devotion to Our Lady of
Mount Carmel Church is expressed in silent acts of dedication filled
with generosity and quiet love. As a Feast Committee, it is our desire to
thank those devotees by presenting them with the “Fr. Benjamin Franch
Biretta Award.” While remembering the founding father of our parish,
we encourage others to walk in his footsteps: true commitment towards
the church, true devotion to our Lady, and true efforts to make our
Parish-Shrine a place for all. It is with great joy that we thank the
group of men whose efforts made it possible for us to have a beautiful
statue of St. Pio of Pietrelcina in our Piazza. To you, our Padre Pio
benefactors, our gratitude and appreciation.
Finally it is my hope that you all will join us during the Feast this
year. As it has happened in the past, we will enjoy the gift of being
together while expressing our devotion for la Madonna in ways that
only Melrose Park makes it possible. Thank you all and may our Lady’s
infant child shower abundance of graces in the life of each one.
In Christo,
Rev. Miguel Álvarez, cs
Pastor-Rector
The 122nd Feast of
Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Honoree
Gary Marine
Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel
2015 Man of the Year
Gary M. Marine is a 43-year resident of
Melrose Park.
He was born on March 28, 1946, to
Charles and Mary Marine. Gary is one of six
children raised on Chicago's west side and
attended grammar and high school in
Chicago.
A man with a strong work ethic. Gary started in the construction
industry as a teenager. He has been a member of the Laborers
Union, AFL-CIO, Teamsters Union and the International Union of
Operating Engineers Local 150.
Gary was the proprietor of an underground construction contracting business for many years. With over 50 years in the construction industry.
Marine is a past member of the Board of Education Proviso
Township High School District 209 and was recognized as the
Flowers of Italy Man of the Year in 2010.
Gary started his employment with the village of Melrose Park in
June of 2003 as lead building inspector and was appointed
Director of Public Works in February, 2007.
Marine is especially proud of the work he has been involved
with – The Ralph "Babe" Serpico Field, The Scarlato Little
League Sports Complex at Naples Field and the Silver Creek
Stabilization Project, the annual Silver Creek spring and fall
cleanup involving the Public Works Department and volunteers
among others. One of his favorite projects was the restoration of
the Kiddieland sign for the Melrose Park Historical Society.
He has been honored to serve Mayor Ronald M. Serpico and
the the dedicated employees of the Public Works Department
along with the employees of the village of Melrose Park and its
residents.
Marine is an avid car collector and restoration enthusiast.
Gary married Pamela Zito and recently celebrated their 42nd.
wedding anniversary. He is the father of Christine and Gary. Has
two grandchildren, is a brother-it-law, uncle and great uncle.
It has been a great honor for me to be nominated by the Feast
Committee for the Man of the Year!
Thank you Father Miguel Alvarez and the Feast Committee for
this great honor.
Principe/Nocita/Zito Rosary
First we want to Thank the Feast Committee for honoring the
Principe, Nocita, Zito Rosary.
In continuing the devoted tradition to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel,
of the Christian Mothers, and the Altar & Rosary Society, The
Principe, Nocita, Zito Rosary continues to recognize and remember all of these devotees.
In 2004, the remaining members of the Altar & Rosary Society
were informed that there would no longer be an Altar & Rosary
Society Candle House. A member of this society was deeply troubled by this decision but this member still had possession of the
rosary that was carried faithfully in the procession along with the
candle house.
We decided to contact the daughters of the Rocco Zito family
who constructed and donated the rosary in honor of his mother,
Nancy Zito, the founder of the white rosary which is recited every
March 25, on the Feast of the Annunciation.
Rocco's daughters graciously granted our request to continue
the tradition of carrying the rosary in our annual Feast
Procession.
The rosary was restored and repaired with the generous help
of volunteers and small donations.
Along with the rosary we created a decorative basket that is
carried in front of the rosary. The basket contains pictures to
honor the ladies and families of the organizations, past and
present, and anyone that has someone dear to be prayed for
and honored on that day.
Each year we get more people to march with us, men, women
and children of all ages.
We welcome everyone to help carry our devoted rosary and
beautiful basket.
It is in our prayer that future generations will continue this
wonderful tradition.
