On Saturday 26th May 2012, Melanie hosted
the Body Feel Good Day Market at the
Freemasons Centre in Broadview. Melanie
helped to raise lots of positive awareness with
more than 28 stalls set up on the day, selling a
range of products from aroma therapy candles,
cupcakes and jewellery.
“It was five months of hard work and
dedication but it’s all for a very worthy cause,”
says Melanie, “…we are even considering
holding another event in September 2012.”
Her dedication and commitment to the cause
helped Melanie to raise more than $264 in
support of the work of Autism SA.
A big job well done to Melanie!

Ten years ago two island mates, Ralph Turbill
and Aaron Wilksch, bought an old motorcycle
as a restoration project.
They have now reignited their dream to ride
this motocross side car with a 650cc Kawasaki
four stroke motor in the ‘24 hour trial’, the
longest-running off-road motorbike race in
Australia.
The ‘24 hour trial’ is Australia’s ultimate
endurance/reliability trial. It begins this year at
Kapunda on July 14 and continues over four laps
of about 250km each, finishing 24 hours later.

AUTISM SA
During Autism Month – April 2012, Autism SA
representatives were busy in our community
setting up awareness stands and listening to
stories from people in the public who face the
challenges of Autism Spectrum Disorders on a
daily basis.
Some of the highlights included an awareness
stall at the Marion Shopping Centre (pictured
above), a stall at the Guide Dogs SA/NT Paws
Parade (pictured below), lots of positive media
coverage by ABC local and regional radio, ABC
online, The Sunday Mail, The Advertiser and
The Messenger Community News. For a list
of media coverage from Autism Month – April
2012, please visit www.autismsa.org.au.
We appreciate the support of the South
Australian media that help us to raise
awareness in the public sphere and we are
grateful for the stories that families and
individuals shared with us during the month of
April. Remember – raising awareness doesn’t
stop at the end of April – everyday is an
opportunity to share your story and educate
someone who might not understand what it’s
like to live with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The Norwood Football
Club is proudly
supporting Autism SA
ceo’s corner
The world is changing
rapidly. Major reform
for the disability
sector and not-forprofit organisations is
occurring and Autism
SA is endeavouring to
ensure that the reforms
maximise outcomes
and opportunities for
the autism spectrum
community.
I am pleased to announce that the State
Government showed a clear commitment
to supporting the NDIS and putting more
funding to disability services in handing down
the State budget on the 31st May. The budget
includes an additional $212.5m over 5 years
made up of:
•$106.1m for critical need (especially areas
like accommodation and respite)
•$61.5m for disability housing construction
•$21.6m to finalise closure of Strathmont
and support people in the community
•$20m for a NDIS launch site
•$23m for a community visitors scheme and
•$1m (over the next 2 years) for sector
support to transition to individualised
funding.
The State Government reported that this is
the largest increase in government funding
for disability in 25 years.
But what does all this mean for the autism
spectrum community?
At a national level, there is a strong
commitment from the Australian
Government to progress the National
Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The
Federal Budget, handed down in early May,
commits the Commonwealth to spending
$1 billion over four years to establish
four launch sites for the NDIS. There is an
expectation that States and Territories will
also contribute new recurrent funding to
individual support packages under a NDIS.
More information about the NDIS is available
at www.everyaustraliancounts.com.au
There are still many unanswered questions
for people with an Autism Spectrum
Disorder and their families about the
proposed NDIS and the additional funding
from the State Government. What we
do know is that every day and all across
Australia, each and every one of us strive
to ensure that people living with an Autism
Spectrum Disorder achieve their potential.
Regardless of who we are and what we
do, we all know that there is never enough
funding to make sure that everyone with
an Autism Spectrum Disorder can access
essential support, therapy, equipment, early
intervention and training. People with Autism
Spectrum Disorders and their families must
have greater access to funding and greater
choice and control about the type of services
they receive and how their funding is spent.
Autism SA is actively involved in informing
government of the needs, issues and
concerns of people with an Autism Spectrum
Disorder and their families. The State-wide
Autism Project that we are undertaking is
giving us great information about the range
of service issues and service gaps that people
experience. Thanks to all the professionals
and families who completed the on-line
survey or engaged in focus groups to inform
this process.
Autism SA is also active in national roles
to inform and advise government about
some of the potential issues for a NDIS. It is
critical that the unique needs and complex
characteristics of ASD be considered
within all elements of the design and
implementation of the NDIS to ensure that
families and individuals experience a service
response that is sensitive to their need and
context.
The Board of Autism SA has undertaken a
review of our constitution and governance
structure. It is clear that the current and
foreseeable challenges that await us support
a shift to a company limited by guarantee
structure. Our aim is to ensure improved
outcomes and opportunities for people living
with ASD. A Special General Meeting will
be called in the near future to ensure the
effective transition to a company structure.
We have also embarked on a significant
project to implement a new database that
will enhance direct service delivery and
improve business processes. Autism SA is
highly regulated and is required to report a
range of different data to different funders
and organisations. This can be a time
consuming process and we aim to ensure
that efficiencies can be found to enable us to
devote more time to direct services.
This project has highlighted a number
of issues that we want to address, but in
particular, communication with families
and individuals with ASD has become a
key consideration. The Autism SA Infomail
Electronic Newsletter is a key mechanism
for distributing information, and as
more communication becomes electronic,
I encourage you all to subscribe to
the Infomail via our website
www.autismsa.org.au/subscribe.
We look forward to the challenges that
lay ahead and in ensuring that the autism
community is well represented in the
significant reforms occurring across the
disability sector.

also contribute new recurrent funding to
individual support packages under a NDIS.
More information about the NDIS is available
at www.everyaustraliancounts.com.au
There are still many unanswered questions
for people with an Autism Spectrum
Disorder and their families about the
proposed NDIS and the additional funding
from the State Government. What we
do know is that every day and all across
Australia, each and every one of us strive
to ensure that people living with an Autism
Spectrum Disorder achieve their potential.
Regardless of who we are and what we
do, we all know that there is never enough
funding to make sure that everyone with
an Autism Spectrum Disorder can access
essential support, therapy, equipment, early
intervention and training. People with Autism
Spectrum Disorders and their families must
have greater access to funding and greater
choice and control about the type of services
they receive and how their funding is spent.
Autism SA is actively involved in informing
government of the needs, issues and
concerns of people with an Autism Spectrum
Disorder and their families. The State-wide
Autism Project that we are undertaking is
giving us great information about the range
of service issues and service gaps that people
experience. Thanks to all the professionals
and families who completed the on-line
survey or engaged in focus groups to inform
this process.
Autism SA is also active in national roles
to inform and advise government about
some of the potential issues for a NDIS. It is
critical that the unique needs and complex
characteristics of ASD be considered
within all elements of the design and
implementation of the NDIS to ensure that
families and individuals experience a service
response that is sensitive to their need and
context.
The Board of Autism SA has undertaken a
review of our constitution and governance
structure. It is clear that the current and
foreseeable challenges that await us support
a shift to a company limited by guarantee
structure. Our aim is to ensure improved
outcomes and opportunities for people living
with ASD. A Special General Meeting will
be called in the near future to ensure the
effective transition to a company structure.
We have also embarked on a significant
project to implement a new database that
will enhance direct service delivery and
improve business processes. Autism SA is
highly regulated and is required to report a
range of different data to different funders
and organisations. This can be a time
consuming process and we aim to ensure
that efficiencies can be found to enable us to
devote more time to direct services.
This project has highlighted a number
of issues that we want to address, but in
particular, communication with families
and individuals with ASD has become a
key consideration. The Autism SA Infomail
Electronic Newsletter is a key mechanism
for distributing information, and as
more communication becomes electronic,
I encourage you all to subscribe to
the Infomail via our website
www.autismsa.org.au/subscribe.
We look forward to the challenges that
lay ahead and in ensuring that the autism
community is well represented in the
significant reforms occurring across the
disability sector.

Ten years ago two island mates, Ralph Turbill
and Aaron Wilksch, bought an old motorcycle
as a restoration project.
They have now reignited their dream to ride
this motocross side car with a 650cc Kawasaki
four stroke motor in the ‘24 hour trial’, the
longest-running off-road motorbike race in
Australia.
The ‘24 hour trial’ is Australia’s ultimate
endurance/reliability trial. It begins this year at
Kapunda on July 14 and continues over four laps
of about 250km each, finishing 24 hours later.
