Watch out, there’s a dinosaur about! Actually, there are 14 giant
mechanical replicas (and much more) at the Living Dinosaurs
exhibition at the Macao Science Centre. You’re also well advised to

being held by the 27th Macao Arts Festival Outreach Programme.
Literary types won’t want to miss the ‘Cultural Heritage · Literary
Landscape’ Guided Tour as they stroll around the city.

Florentijn Hofman is the artist who
conceived the Rubber Duck project,
which has been touring the world since
2007, with the Rubber Duck Tour China
part of the grand plan, which essentially
is to display contemporary art in public
to create a more open approach to art
and public spaces. The Rubber Duck
Macau Tour - plying the sea between
Macao Science Centre and Kun Iam

Big Things Afoot in the Universe
To promote reading habits as well as to
encourage residents who love reading
to make friends through books and
share their resources, Macao’s Public
Libraries have launched over 40 themed
activities, such as book exhibition,
photo exhibition, seminars, pop-up book
theatre, etc. Local and overseas scholars
are invited as well to take readers to have
a memorable reading exploration journey. Sir Robert Ho Tung
Library, one of the attractions located in Historical Centre of
Macao, is a good place for reading ones cannot miss out.
Living Dinosaurs (23/3-11/9) - the first special
exhibition themed around dinosaurs by the Macao
Science Centre - examines an exotic species
which dominated the planet for over 160 million
years. Highlights include 14 mechanical replica
dinosaurs, multimedia interactive games and
high definition dome show ‘Dinosaurs at Dusk’.
Award-winning MUSICA Why is the Universe
Beautiful is an entertaining educational full-dome
show which nourishes our artistic senses, while
the Starry Night Series features live lectures on Astronomical Manga (2/4, Cantonese), Signs of
the End Times (16/4, English) and Evolution of the Stars (23/4, Cantonese).

The century-old Festival honours A-Ma,
the Goddess of Seafarers, through various
thanksgiving rituals and Cantonese Opera
performances originally performed on board
fishing vessels. On April 29th, the day of
A-Ma’s birthday, everybody can enjoy these
in the environs of the A-Ma Temple in Barra
Square, which is one attraction of the World
Heritage ‘Historic Centre of Macao’ and is
close to the Maritime Museum, in tandem
with lion and dragon dance performances.
‘Sparkler-grabbing’ is perhaps the most
memorable activity, with the third sparkler believed to bring luck and good fortune to families.

Myanmar’s New Year Water Festival celebrates that
country’s New Year and sees off the old by sprinkling
water and offering prayers. Highlights of the 21st
Myanmar Overseas Chinese Water Festival include
the Festooned Vehicle Parade and the Blessing
parade. The 21st Myanmar and Southeast Asia
Cuisine and Culture Festival features food booths,
folk music and dance performances, while the Water
Festival Carnival presents another opportunity to see China and Myanmar’s music and dance
performances, partake in the fun of the water splashing free-for-all...plus all that delicious
southeast Asian food! Bring the whole family because there’s a special children’s area, too.

The fishing community of Taipa, long devoted to the
Taoist god Pak Tai, dedicated a temple to the deity
over a century ago, with his birthday celebrated this
year with a noon blessing ceremony, firecrackers,
distribution of pork plus lion and dragon dance
parade in Taipa Old Village (9/4, 12:00 noon). An arts
and crafts exhibition, Cantonese Opera performances
staged in the precincts of Pak Tai Temple precincts
plus celebratory dinner for the local elderly is a
culinary and photographic highlight of the festivities.

Taipa, and St. Francis Xavier in Coloane, where you can explore the World Heritage ‘Historic
Centre of Macao’ and the lesser-known districts to experience the local lifestyle of Macao.

Built in 1592, Lin Fung Temple – one of the three most famous temples in Macao and commonly
referred to as the Temple of the Lotus, is renowned for its association with the goddess Dou Mou,
who protects children from disease and acts as the celestial arbiter of one’s life on Earth, followers
of the deity go to Ling Fung Temple or Lin Kai Temple to pray for their children’s health on the Feast
of Holy Mother of Pox (14/4) dedicated to Dou Mou. The
Temple of Divinity of Medicine - also known as the Temple
of the Sleeping Buddha - was built next to Bao Gong Temple
in 1893. The Feast of the Divinity of Medicine (21/4) is also
commemorated in the Temple of the Local God of Land and
Lin Fung Temple, while I Leng Temple (Ka Sin Tong) in Taipa,
built in 1900, houses the Emperor of the Sacred Doctor.

Ching Ming Festival

Ching Ming is revered as the day for
maintaining ancestors’ graves – ‘tomb
sweeping’ – while offering food, tea, wine,
incense and joss paper in time-honoured
rituals, and is an important day for all
generations of the family to gather to pay
their respects. In Macao, the Protestant
Cemetery, which is part of the UNESCOlisted “Historic Centre of Macao”, provides
a comprehensive record of the earliest Protestant community of Macao. Together with the
site, you will find “the Morrison Chapel” in honour of Robert Morrison. George Chinnery,
an important British China-trade artist, is also buried at the site alongside various other
prominent figures of the time.

‘Colour Exchange’ – Painting Exhibition

This wonderful exhibition features the works of
artists Eugenio Novikoff Sales, Lam Kin Ian, Lei
Wai Wa, William Chio, Mak Kong Weng and Leong
Yuk Fai, all of whom have established careers in
both Macao and Mainland China. Macao-born
Sales blends African, Asian and European styles
in his compositions, while William Chio paints
in a more traditional Chinese style. Leong Yuk
Fai’s works comprise mostly oil paintings, with
‘Short Rest’ displayed in the 1979 Exhibition of Fine Works of Art in celebration of the 30 th
anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

In ‘New Jiangnan Silk and Bamboo Music - Works by Gu
Guanren’ the esteemed composer conducts the Macao Chinese
Orchestra with gusto and grace. The Orchestra also performs
the commissioned composition ‘Flowers in Paradise’ as
well as the selected works of Handel, Mozart and Johann
Strauss. In Weekend Music Party – Back in Time Macao
Orchestra re-interprets pop classics in a fresh new way while
in Shakespeare’s World the 400th anniversary of the passing of the Bard is remembered by the
Orchestra under the practiced baton of Zhang Yi and accomplished pianist Alexei Volodin.

‘Point to Point’ - Multimedia Street Dance Theatre
depicts a journey on public transport in which people
become lost and confused on the journey, forgetting the
meaning of living and even their destination, causing
to immerse themselves in meditation. Meanwhile,
‘Embrace’ - A String Music Concert with the Art of
Projection takes its theme from a bronze sculpture
created to symbolize the centuries’ old friendship between Portugal and China. The Macau Strings
Association and multimedia creators from Macao Maker Interactive Arts Space join the dots.
With their second album to be released this month,
local singing duo aRiejohn reconnect with their
growing fan base. Arie and John’s new ‘Timeline’
album will continue the ‘serenity’ of the first, while the
duo also plan to introduce a more diversified musical
style in the future. Founded in 2005, local rock band
Scamper is popular with young music fans, who were
thrilled the group was invited as special guests on
Linkin Park’s Macao leg of their world tour. Look for
their new album to be released in May.
