The Syracuse University football team appeared to be positioning itself to shock the conference when it defeated Northwestern and Maine on consecutive Saturdays a month ago to even its record at 2-2. The offense, led by quarterback Greg Paulus and wide receiver Mike Williams, was humming. The defense, with future NFLer Arthur Jones manning the interior, was smothering the run. Mike Jones seemed to be a threat to return a kickoff to the house every time he touched the ball. The stage was set. Unfortunately onto it walked the horrible Hyde. Seven turnovers — the same number the Orange had committed in its first four games combined — doomed SU to a 34-20 loss to South Florida. Another interception on offense and bonehead penalties on defense and special teams resulted in a 27-0 first-half nightmare a week later vs. West Virginia. No wonder rookie head coach Doug Marrone chose to look inward rather than at 1-5 Akron as the Zips prepare to visit the Orange (2-4) at 3:30 p.m. Saturday (Time Warner) in the Carrier Dome. … Click the links below for more SU football coverage on » Videos » Photo galleries » Live game updates » Audio slideshows from Dave Rahme and photographer Frank Ordoñez of The Post-Standard » The Orange Football blog with The Post-Standard’s Donnie Webb » Bud Poliquin, The Post-Standard’s sports columnist » Orangecast, The Post-Standard’s SU sports podcast » Follow PSfootball on Twitter Click here to read the rest of Dave Rahme’s game preview on syracuse.com » Subscribe to the Orange Insider real-time FAST! jobs EASY! 2009TEAM STATISTICS HOWTHEY STACKUP Quarterbacks Suspension and injury have forced true freshman Patrick Nicely into the Akron lineup. Greg Paulus has thrown too many picks. NOW! Search AKR SU Running backs Hard to believe backs as good as Delone Carter and Antwon Bailey are not more productive. Akron counters with average committee. AKR SU Receivers Deryn Bowser, who has all five of Akron’s TD catches, is out. That gives SU and Mike Williams (45 catches) an advantage. Videos AKR SU Offensive line Neither line is good at opening holes for running backs and is average at best in protecting the quarterback on passing downs. AKR SU Defensive line Pass rush was a problem for Akron last season and continues (4 sacks in six games). SU has big edge in depth and talent. Current Jobs AKR SU Linebackers Freshman Brian Wagner (67 tackles) is a blossoming star for Zips, but SU trio led by Derrell Smith (55 tackles) is better. AKR SU Secondary It’s all there on: syracuse.com/jobs Discover the advantage. Post-Standard Media In print and online. SU’s secondary cut down on big plays last game but still has allowed 14 TD passes in six games. Akron is nearly as bad (12). AKR SU Special teams Zip kickers are only 3-for-9 on FG tries, and team averages only 36 yards a punt. Big edge to SU in this critical phase.
