Tony Figueroa
Convention Chair
Welcome, all, to our fifteenth anniversary: FanimeCon 2009!
I hope you’re ready for the weekend to come! our staff has
been working hard putting together events, printing badges,
getting guests, and organizing the insanity that is FanimeCon,
and we’re looking forward to our largest convention yet!
I’m Tony, and this is my first year chairing FanimeCon. some
may know me as the former webmaster or head of MusicFest.
In the six years I’ve been volunteering for this convention, I’ve
strived to make our fans’ experiences better each year. This
year is no exception, and I hope you like what we’ve done:
all of the events, the extravaganzas, the guests, the gaming,
the video!
none of this could happen without FanimeCon’s all-volunteer
staff. I can’t thank them enough. I’ve never known a group
that works so hard out of sheer love for what they do, and
I’m glad to call so many of them my friends. If you pass by
someone with a red badge in the halls, don’t be afraid to say
hi and throw out a quick thank you — they won’t bite!
But as fantastic as our staff is, we’d have no reason to put on
FanimeCon without the fans! We are, after all, “By Fans, For
Fans”, and nothing makes us happier than fans enjoying the
show. Without your excitement, your energy — without you
— FanimeCon would be nothing! so thank you for making
the show as spectacular as it is.
now, what are you doing reading this?! skip ahead to the
good parts, pick up a schedule, make new friends — and just
go and enjoy the show!

Every year, during Memorial Day weekend, something
amazing and almost magical happens. In the san Jose
Convention Center, a whole world begins to form, and life
breathes into this phenomenon called FanimeCon. almost
unnoticed, thousands of volunteer hours come together to
create the world that a good deal of us have come to love
and cherish. For some of you, it is your first year experiencing
FanimeCon, let alone an anime convention altogether! For
others, you have become seasoned Fanime attendees who
come to the convention to meet up with friends you haven’t
seen in a year. It’s a wonderful experience, isn’t it? all of the
hustle and bustle in the Dealers room, video rooms running
anime 24 hours, random people on the concourse offering to
become your friend for the weekend, Pocky becoming its own
currency – it’s an overwhelming experience!
I can say that, as former attendee, I did not see myself in
charge of putting such a large event together, but it has been a
wonderful and exciting road these past eight years. I attended
FanimeCon 2002 at the behest of my boyfriend, Tony, who
said that I would love the events and overall atmosphere. I
had been to aX the previous year, so I did not think that
another convention, a much smaller convention even, would
compare. Boy was I wrong! almost at once, when I walked
into the santa Clara Convention Center, I could tell that this
convention was definitely no aX. This little convention had
a family feel to it, and it made me feel welcomed, like I was
invited to interact with my surroundings and the people,
rather than watch as a spectator.
needless to say, that weekend sparked an interest in Fanime
that I did not know I had. Tony graciously acted as the guinea
pig and staffed for Fanime first to test the waters. He then
invited me to become a part of his MusicFest staff. after my
first year, I was hooked. From there, I went on to become the
Publications Manager, then assistant Director of Marketing to
where I am now. only this time, Tony is my fiance as well as
Convention Chair, and I am his Vice Chair! It’s been a rather
bumpy ride, but I am absolutely stoked to help oversee this
large expanse of an event! Who else can say that they helped
to put on a convention of 14,000+ attendees and supervise a
staff of over 600?
It’s been such a wonderful experience getting to this point,
and I hope that you all will enjoy the fruits of my and my
staff’s labor. Welcome to FanimeCon 2009 where we are not
just an anime convention – we are a family that opens its
arms to you to join us and enjoy the events with us. To the
newcomers to Fanime, welcome and I hope you will join our
unique brood and become ‘lifers’ like a good deal of us have
become. To those of you who have faithfully come back to us,
year after year, ohisashiburi desu!

Welcome to Fanime Two-Thousand-and-nine
Where the best fans come together to shine
I hope that you enjoy all there is to see
Music, Panels, and the artist alley
Cosplay, Black and White Ball, and Guests
all to see with friends, old and newly made
Where you can peruse with Dealer’s best
and play twenty-four hours in the arcade
Here I came upon the art of Japanese animation
spending years working here and there
From the fast paced world of registration
To meeting active fans in Volunteers
In the last two years, I directed operations
Where I saw behind the scenes in many ways
From the fans to the staff, it was an education
now I sit beside the Chair to support and convey
My warmest wishes for a great show
In which all of you will be aglow
From all the sights and sounds divine
That will mark Fanime Two-Thousand-and-nine!

FanimeCon 2009
I hope you will have as much fun as I did my first and final
year as an attendee. If you like FanimeCon as much as I do,
maybe you’ll even join us on staff next year! But for now,
thank you for coming, be safe and most importantly, have a
kick-ass time!

KeiTH BURGess
after a few years away, Keith Burgess is returning to
FanimeCon for 2009. With nearly a decade in the
anime industry, he has done almost everything. From
production, script adaptation, and voice acting such
characters as akuma from Street Fighter Alpha and
Alpha Generations, Chinko from Dead Leaves, Hyuga
from the Evangelion movies End of Evangelion and
Death and Rebirth, he has definitely made his way
around. after some time away from the anime world,
he’s making his way back with new talents under his belt:
artist and graphic designer. His art ranges from pinup style, manga, and even american comic book styles,
and he will have some of his work on display here at
the convention. He’s working on some new projects that
we’re sure he will let us all in on at the event, and he is
excited to be back among the fans since he got his start
as a fan himself.

Ken lally
Ken Lally has been making a career out of playing super-villains. you have
seen him as “The German” on nBC’s Heroes and as “albert Wesker” in
Capcom’s big gaming franchise, Resident Evil 5; but, before his nefarious
beginnings, he was “seduced to death” on Star Trek: Enterprise by a beautiful
alien called “raJIIn”.
son of a spy and a child of the Cold War, Mr. Lally was enrolled at an early
age into martial arts classes and the local police cadets, where he learned
urban close quarter combat and how to handle firearms. after an injury
prevented him from enlisting in the navy, Ken discovered shakespeare,
received his B.a. in Theater from upstate new york’s st. Lawrence University,
and attended new york City’s national shakespeare Conservatory. His love
of shakespeare took him to London, where he studied at shakespeare’s
Globe, (the actual space where the plays were first performed), and he also
performed in Los angeles, new york, and nevada. By age 24, his love for acting took him to film.
since then, Mr. Lally has been in dozens of films and TV shows doing both stunts and acting. He got into stunts
by accident. His lifelong passion for martial arts and fighting took him to Benny “the Jet” Urquidez’s kickboxing
gym in north Hollywood, where he trained and fought under sensei Benny’s watchful eye for nearly nine years;
all the while performing martial arts stunts, falls, and other gags for the legendary five-time world-kickboxing
champion. shakespeare and film are his first two loves, but stunts were just too much fun to say “no” to whenever
they called. He is also an avid fencer and fences once a week with a local sword master. on his days off, he
teaches shakespeare and stunt-fighting for film, or “acting for action”, at the new york Film academy’s campus
on the Warner Brothers’ lot in Los angeles. He trains by boxing and kickboxing every day and gets together once
a week to put on the gloves and spar with the other members of Benny’s stunt team.

actor, producer, director, and stuntman, reuben Langdon is currently
starring in the hottest video game release of the year, Resident Evil 5, as its
main male character, Chris redfield. In addition to this exciting role which
opens amazing new doors for actors in performance capture (an art form
based on CGI-assisted acting), he also co-produced the game’s cinematic
cut scenes. Up next for Langdon is filming the live-action adaptation of the
Bryan Lee o’Malley’s graphic novel Scott Pilgrim, which stars Michael Cera
and is directed by Edgar Wright.
reuben Langdon began his career in Japan as a series regular on the
Japanese superhero TV series B-Fighter Kabuto (better known in the Us as
Beetleborgs Metallix). Later, he relocated to Hong Kong to work among the
most famous names in the Hong Kong film industry, most specifically with
Jackie Chan in Jackie Chan: My Stunts, Gen-Y Cops, and the internationally
renowned fantasy adventure The Medallion. Currently residing in Los angeles, Mr. Langdon continues to share his
talent on-screen. He has appeared alongside sammo Hung in the Martial Law series and has worked regularly on
the hit TV show, The Power Rangers. Mr. Langdon’s highly technical training in multiple martial arts has assisted
him in both in his acting and his motion capture movements.
Complementing his success in the worlds of film and television, Mr. Langdon has performed in and coordinated a
number of motion capture shoots for interactive video games, including Resident Evil 5, The Bourne Conspiracy,
Tao Fang, Star Wars: Jedi Knight II, Castlevania: Curse of Darkness, and Dead Rising. In Devil May Cry 3 and 4
he was both the motion capture actor and the English voice of Dante, the gun/sword-toting hero of the franchise.
In Street Fighter IV, he was the voice of Ken. Mr. Langdon has also worked as a performance capture actor with
such respected directors as steven spielberg, Peter Jackson, and James Cameron.

anime highlights Patricia Ja Lee’s life; during her elementary school
years she used to run home from school in order to watch the original
airing of Robotech on network TV. During high school, she collected
Ranma 1/2 on VHs. During college, she watched first translations
(old school yellow subtitles) of everything the campus charter anime
club showed. after graduation she was cast as Cassie Chan, the
pink Power Ranger in Space. From that came voice-over work: a bit
in the re-digitized Akira, Meifa in Cowboy Bebop, series regular
Megumi in Gate Keepers, Mika in Serial Experiments Lain, and
many others. Later, cast as Tang ning (lead) in Hong Kong’s Golden
Harvest martial arts film, Extreme Challenge, she was able to get back into doing fight scenes she
hadn’t done since her Power Ranger days.
Biohazard’s Umbrella Chronicles (aka Resident Evil 3.5), made for the Wii, featured her voice talent
as she re-created Jill Valentine’s vocals. Luckily she had some game titles already under her vocal
belt, which served as fine training ground. Later, Bandai (Usa) appointed her to portray the live
action ASOS Brigade leader Haruhi suzumiya, in a series of webisodes that would supplement the
DVD releases of the anime series, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. and, two months ago Capcom
released Resident Evil 5 (for XBoX 360 & Ps3), in which Patricia Ja Lee performed the voice and
motion of Jill Valentine who first appears as a mysterious Hooded Entity. yeah, she got to do fight
scenes again! Today, she’s hanging out at FanimeCon!
Ric MeyeRs
ric Meyers spent a year prepping his www.ricpicks.com
website simply because he’s done way too much in his
freaky career: written more than fifty books (including
best-selling adventure, horror, sci-fi, and fantasy
thrillers, as well as award-winning TV and movie nonfiction); served as contributing editor for more than a
half-dozen magazines; supplied interviews, liner notes,
and audio commentaries for more than 300 international
DVDs; consulted with networks and studios on everything
from The Twilight Zone to Kung Fu Panda; taught writing,
film, and martial arts at colleges from Connecticut to
Utah; and even played the king at Medieval Times and
santa Claus all over the northeast. Known, beloved,
and reviled for his love of all things asian, Mr. Meyers
returns to FanimeCon again as living proof that you can
do what you love and love what you do.

JonaTHan osBoRne
Jonathan osborne was born in Boston, Massachusetts.
shortly thereafter, he became an anime fan much to the
protestations of his parents. For years, he’s been known
as the “Man of 1000 Deaths” for having been killed in
such titles as Fist of the North Star, Akira, The Big O,
Cowboy Bebop, and many, many more. Mr. osborne
also played Masahashi in Paranoia Agent, George in
NieA_7, William Morris in Gundam 0083: Stardust
Memory, as well as Broggy, Gaimon, and shojo in One
Piece. Last year, Mr. osborne was honored to be the very
first recipient of FanimeCon’s yamaga award. This will
be his ninth appearance at FanimeCon, so feel free to
come up and say hello to him... and maybe even offer
him a nutter-Butter.
Gilles poiTRas
Gilles Poitras is the access services Librarian at Golden Gate University in
the san Francisco area. He is best known for his three books: The Anime
Companion, Anime Essentials, and the Anime Companion 2, as well as
writing for Otaku USA. He also sits on the senior board of Mechademia,
an annual scholarly anthology of essays on anime, manga and fan culture.
Mr. Poitras also has given presentations about anime for Japan - Us
friendship groups, for public libraries, at the asian art Museum in san
Francisco, at conventions; all day workshops for librarians; introduced
anime films at the smithsonian; and even taught a course for eight weeks
on the subject for Pixar staff.
He first discovered anime while walking through san Francisco’s Japantown in 1977. as a fan of foreign films, he
was instantly attracted by the use of cinematic effects in ways that he had never seen in animation before.
He has two Masters degrees: one in Library science from the University of California at Berkeley, and one in
Theology from Pacific school of religion, also in Berkeley. His background in theology has proven beneficial in that
it gave him the scholarly skills to employ anime and manga as a window into Japanese culture.
“one important thing I learned studying religion is that one should never assume that something from another
culture means what it would in one’s own culture. Humanity is far too diverse and interesting for that to be the case.”

Fujiko-Chan
The Japanese band, Fujiko-Chan, takes the stage with an
“anything goes” style of rock.
Based in san Francisco and inspired by anime, this
energetic team named itself after the main female character
in Lupin III, Fujiko Mine, who is almost as powerfully sassy
and sexy as Fujiko-Chan’s featured vocalist, naoko. Koichi
on guitar, yuji on drums, and Kei on bass complete the
band’s dynamic sound.

Makenai
In early 2008, a group of six people formed Makenai. Born
out of pure unadulterated love for anime and its music, this
band has been performing at several anime conventions,
such as anime Expo, ani-jam, anime Vegas, Mikimocon,
and anime Los angeles. It was perhaps because of fate (or
maybe just by pure dumb luck) that they found each other,
but the chemistry and friendship that developed within the
band was evident from the very first day it was formed. The
members’ various influences helped shape their unique style
in interpreting the music. now, this Los angeles-based band
— armed with two vocalists (aX Idol 2008 Finalist Evelyn
aranibar and aX Idol 2008 Winner Pamela Moss), two
dueling guitarists (Brathzo Karanovic and angel Miranda),
a rumbling bassist (Kiko Montecillo), and a heavy-pounding
drummer (Jade abellaneda) — will share their passion for
music with anyone willing to listen.
VAEIDOS
VaEIDos (Va-ay-dos) is a unique new international hybrid
rock band with members from both Japan and the United
states, consisting of Xion (shion) on vocals, Perry on guitar/
keys, Gene on bass, and Trevor on drums.
Because of the eclectic backgrounds of the various members,
VaEIDos represents the future of music in the Us: a fusion
of cultures and musical viewpoints that creates a unique new
sound, with influences that range from hard rock to metal,
from Japanese rock to pop, and even dance and jazz.
VaEIDos creates music that everyone can enjoy.
VaEIDos has been performing throughout the country
including Texas, California, nevada and Minnesota – and in
May 2009, they will be in san Jose!!

Weapons Policy
Weapons aren’t usually allowed to be worn around or carried in public, but prop weapons can sometimes be fun. This Weapons Policy sets
guidelines to balance the two. For the purposes of this policy, the term “weapon” includes (but is not limited to) the following:
• All real weapons and all prop weapons.
• Anything that can inflict physical harm.
• Anything used in a menacing or threatening manner.
• Anything that resembles or can be mistaken for something dangerous, either by law enforcement or average people, when seen from
20 feet away under any conditions, regardless of the object’s ineffectiveness.
Prohibited Weapons
Real weapons are prohibited from being carried at the convention under
the Weapons Policy. Examples of prohibited weapons include (but are
not limited to) the following:
• Live Steel – Live steel is prohibited. This includes swords, knives,
and any object with any metal capable of taking an edge. Even dull
blades and live steel in scabbards are still prohibited.
• Guns and Projectile Weapons – Guns and projectile
weapons of any kind are prohibited. This includes real guns, gun
replicas, pellet guns, BB guns, airsoft equipment, darts, water guns,
blowguns, crossbows, and anything with moving parts that can
discharge any form of projectile.
• Real Flail Weapons – Real flail weapons are prohibited. This
includes whips, floggers, maces, nunchaku, and any weapon with
attached moving parts.
• Incendiary Devices – Incendiary devices are prohibited. This
includes all devices which spark, shoot flame, burn, smolder, can
self-initiate combustion, or exist for no other purpose than to be lit
with a combustion device.
• Concealed Weapons – State law prohibits concealed weapons.
Concealed weapons are not allowed at the convention.
Permitted Weapons
Some prop weapons may be eligible to be carried around the
convention as part of a costume (subject to approval by Rovers staff).
• Prop/Toy Guns – Prop guns and toy guns that are easily
identifiable as toys may be permitted if the prop possesses no
moving parts and is in a bright safety color or is clearly marked
with a non-removable orange tip.
• Prop Flail Weapons – Prop flail weapons that are clearly
made of foam and/or paper may be permitted as long as they are
ornamental and in no way used as weapons.
• Staves, Staffs, Wooden Swords – Staves, bo sticks, bokken,
shinai, and wooden swords count as prop weapons and may be
permitted as long as they are ornamental and in no way ever
brandished or used as weapons.
Peace-Bonding
Who:Any member, staff, or guest who wishes to carry any weapon
around the convention as part of their costume shall have that
weapon peace-bonded. This is regardless of any training,
credentials, age, maturity, or status as a general member, staff
member, or guest.
What: Peace-bonding is the process of approving a weapon to be
carried by a member, staff, or guest in costume. A Rover
inspects the weapon in question for compliance with the
guidelines set forth by this Weapons Policy and the Rovers
department. Weapons that pass inspection will be affixed with
a nondestructive peace-bonding tag. The tag tells FanimeCon
staff that you understand and agree to the Weapons Policy, you
accept full responsibility and liability for your weapon, and you
are are approved to carry your prop weapon at the convention.
When: Peace-bonding shall be done as soon as possible after entering
convention-occupied space. This includes all public hallways of
the hotels, anywhere in the convention center, and any space
set aside for convention use.
Where:Peace-bonding stations are located at the exit to Registration,
at the Information Desks, in the Dealers Hall, and at the Rovers
office in Willow Glen III on the second floor of the Marriott.

device rendering it ineffective and inaccessible and within
applicable laws for concealed weapons.
If you purchase a weapon, you shall immediately remove the
weapon from convention-occupied space without removing it from
the box. Or, if you are in costume and the weapon is eligible,
you shall immediately report to a qualified Rover and have the
weapon peace-bonded.

THe yaMaGa-san GUesT paRTy
This year, we’re throwing an exclusive party for yamaga-san, some of his fellow Guests of Honor — and 100 lucky attendees!
(sorry, no press or industry.) The party will be held sunday evening in the magnificent Fairmont hotel, away from the bustle of
the convention center. Would you like an invitation? stage Zero will be giving away invitation vouchers at random times, and
you can bid on vouchers at the Charity auction Live Event on sunday. Winners should bring their voucher, attendee badge,
and photo ID to the Publications room in the Hilton to receive their customized invitation. Further instructions will be on the
voucher. stay tuned to stage Zero for a chance to attend this extraordinary event!
aUToGRapHs
Interested in getting an autograph from your favorite Guest of Honor? an autograph area will be set up for just that purpose.
Located in the Hilton san Carlos room, attendees will have the chance to meet their idol and get a great keepsake. This might
be your only chance, so check the schedule for when guests will be signing, and then stop on by and share the memories.
BlacK & WHiTe Ball
Bigger and better than ever, the Black and White Ball is returning
to FanimeCon for 2009! With a beautiful new venue at the
luxurious Fairmont Hotel and a dazzling array of music from
popular anime, video games, and JPop artists, the only thing
needed to make this truly a glamorous night to remember is you
in your snazzy tuxedo or flowing gown.
since we try to be as close to a real ball as possible, formal attire
is the preferred dress code for this event. For the gentlemen,
that means tuxedos, suits, or formal cosplay such as aristocratstyle clothing. For the ladies, evening gowns, formal dresses,
or Gothic Lolita cosplays are preferred. If you don’t have your
best clothes at hand, no worries. Gentlemen may enter with a
buttoned-up shirt, tie, dress shoes, and a nice pair of slacks; for
the ladies, a dress skirt, blouse, and flats or low heels will do just
fine. We want to keep the atmosphere elegant, classy and fun,
so if you have questions about your dress attire, please speak to
any Black & White Ball staff member.
your first time at a proper ball? your first time dancing ever?
During the days leading up to the Black & White Ball, classes will
teach different styles of dancing to help you out. Dances taught
will include waltz, salsa, foxtrot, swing, two-step, and cha-cha,
and there will be time to practice your newly learned steps at
the end of the lessons. no partners are necessary as we will be
rotating dance partners during the class. Dress for the dance
classes is casual, so save the good stuff to show off on the actual
night of the Black & White Ball. For more experienced dancers,
there will be times where the floor will be open for practice, and
instructors will be on hand to help with dance steps or teach you
some new ones.
