Coachella and Stagecoach won’t be back until next year, but
live music lovers can still enjoy outdoor concerts throughout
the month of May thanks to the return of Palm Desert’s Spring
Concerts in the Park.
Enjoy exciting performances under the stars while
savoring delicious cuisine from a selection of food trucks at
the Civic Center Park Amphitheater from 7:30 to 9 p.m. every
Thursday in May, beginning May 5 with New Wave 80s
favorites performed by The Reflexx.
The Orange County-based band plays hits from bands
such as The Cure, Depeche Mode, Simple Minds, Tears for
Fears, New Order, A-Ha, Duran Duran, Flock of Seagulls, Devo,
and more. They have shared the stage with famous 80s bands
including The Fixx, Gene Loves Jezebel, Berlin, ABC, Wang
Chung, and Modern English.
New this year, the concerts will feature food trucks for the
first time. Scheduled trucks include We Heart Froyo, the
Eat’ Em Up Truck, and Bacon Nation.
Family YMCA of the Desert will once again be leading
children’s games and activities before each of the four shows.
Concertgoers are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn
chairs to enjoy the show. Alcoholic beverages and smoking are
prohibited.

The Palm Desert Community Gallery will feature artwork
from Linda Hanna and Linda Richardi in its new exhibition,
Linda & Linda: Water & Light, May 26 to August 5. There will
be a public reception to honor the artists on Monday, June 13,
from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Linda Hanna is a retired Interior Designer who began her
journey into watercolor painting five years ago as a hobbyist.
She uses transparent bold colors applied to wet paper, a
technique known as “wet on wet,” to create loose,
atmospheric works augmented with darks and calligraphy, sometimes
using ink or Inktense pencils. The artist's subject matter varies, but she has
a preference for desert and California landscapes. Linda has won numerous
ribbons in the various Coachella Valley juried shows for her paintings.
Linda Richardi has studied art through much of her life. A photographer
for many years, Richardi now creates digitally manipulated photographic
images in a painterly style. For this exhibition, she has chosen a series of
selections from her chair series - titled SLIPCOVERED, which consists of a
digital canvas that includes a white leather chair with images from the desert
blended on the canvas. The exhibition also will feature work from Richardi’s
Fresco and Elements series, which are inspired in part by her travels.
The Palm Desert Community Gallery is located in Palm Desert City Hall and

Restaurant Week returns for its ninth year Friday, June 3 through
Sunday, June 12.
Organized by the Palm Springs Desert Resorts Restaurant Association
and sponsored by the City of Palm Desert, Restaurant Week 2016 is the
perfect time to visit a favorite restaurant or to try something new, as chefs
prepare mouthwatering meals at a fixed price.
Scores of restaurants will be offering their own unique three-course prix fixe menus. Prices are $26 or
$38 per person, depending on the restaurant, and do not include beverages, tax, or gratuity. No tickets or
special passes are required, but reservations are highly recommended.
Restaurant Week has expanded beyond dining to include partnerships with area hotels and
attractions. Like the restaurants, these partners are also offering special deals June 3 – 12.

Lower Income Homeowners Get Help for Emergency Repairs
Through Home Improvement Program
Lower income homeowners with homes that need emergency
repairs are encouraged to apply for the City of Palm Desert’s
Home Improvement Program.
Examples of the types of repairs that could be eligible for
assistance under the program include emergency air conditioner
repairs and repairs to damaged roofs.

The City will host a free, two-day shredding
A n updated website and a new smart-
phone app, Palm Desert In Touch, are
the latest examples of Palm Desert’s
ongoing embrace of technology to foster
convenient and transparent communication
with residents, businesses, and visitors.
Brimming with useful information, attractive images, and intuitive navigation, the City’s newly unveiled,
updated website gives Palm Desert’s online image a much needed refresh. The updated website,
www.cityofpalmdesert.org, features colorful photos, common sense dropdown menus, and handy links to
documents and other sites. It replaces an outdated design that had remained relatively unchanged for
eight years. The new website also has a more robust content management system that allows City staff to
update pages more quickly and easily.
The City has also launched Palm Desert In Touch, a real time mobile app and service request system. Palm
Desert In Touch allows residents and visitors to identify municipal issues such as graffiti, potholes, etc. and report
them directly to City Hall for resolution, whether using it around town as a mobile app on their smartphones or
tablets, or at home or work on a personal computer.
Using Palm Desert In Touch is as easy as sending a text. Users can also upload a photo or video showing the
issue and indicate its location on a map with their computer, or use their mobile device's GPS to mark the location
automatically. Utilizing the information provided, the City will follow up as soon as possible to track down the
problem and address it. Each request has a unique tracking number
so the user is able to see when action is taken. A smartphone is
not required in order to use Palm Desert In Touch since service
requests can also be made online via the City’s website –
www.cityofpalmdesert.org/in-touch.

Desert Willow Pro
Saving Lives
and Raising Awareness
Brett Shoopman didn’t set out to be a fundraiser.
But the assistant golf pro at Desert Willow Resort has
already raised more than $65,000 to fight skin cancer
and says he is only getting started.
Shoopman was age 48 in 2012 when he noticed
a strange looking spot the size of an eraser tip on
his right side.
“I knew it didn’t look right,” he said.
“It looked kind of like a mole, but it started
to grow.”
Shoopman went to a dermatologist.
“Two days later, I found out it was level
four, stage-three melanoma,” he said.
Today, thankfully, Shoopman is
cancer free. In 2013, inspired by his
experience, he formed a golf tournament
– the Shoopy Scramble – to raise awareness and
money in the fight against skin cancer.

tournament the second year took his awareness
message to heart and got screened.

and they found a spot,” he said.
The Shoopy Scramble just completed its fourth
year in April, selling out Desert Willow Golf Resort
and raising thousands more dollars for the American
Cancer Society and the Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer
Center. The Center has used the money raised by
Shoopman to quadruple the number of free skin
cancer screenings it offers each year from 50 to 200.
The money also supports public awareness
efforts such as the lecture being given on
Monday, May 2, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Cancer
Center. Board Certified Dermatologist Dr. Timothy
Richardson will speak about the signs of skin cancer
and how to reduce risk. Community members

The City of Palm Desert invites you to experience “Vision
San Pablo” – a temporary transformation of San Pablo
Avenue taking place May 2 to 13, that will highlight this
key roadway’s potential to be part of a revitalized city center
where walking, biking, and fun are the focus.
Envisioned changes on San Pablo, between Alessandro
Drive and Catalina Way, include new trees and
landscaping, street furniture, enhanced bike lanes and
parking, a new roundabout, and a “road diet” that will
narrow the wide, four-lane road to one lane in each direction.
The highlight of the 11-day demonstration project will
be Saturday, May 7, when a section of San Pablo (between
Alessandro and San Gorgonio Way) will be closed from
10 a.m. to 10 p.m. to give residents and visitors a chance to
see the changes up close.
The day’s fun will include food trucks, a beer garden
featuring distinctive brews from three Coachella Valley
breweries, local artists creating works on site, and
information about San Pablo’s envisioned transformation.
Saturday’s street party is the featured event finale for
First Weekend Palm Desert, a monthly celebration of arts in
culture the first weekend of the month, November through
May. Other events for First Weekend in May include Cruise
In at Westfield Palm Desert – an afternoon of custom cars,
hotrods, classics, muscle cars, and more from 1 to 5 p.m.,
also on May 7.

grow around our desert!
The Palm Desert Area
Chamber of Commerce
is no exception. We have
grown both our staff and our membership!
Seeing the business growth is exciting! Since
January, we have welcomed 49 new business
partners to our 5 Star Accredited Chamber and
celebrated with 19 ribbon cutting ceremonies.
As for our own organization, we are having a
“growth spurt” as well. Nicole Popper was
hired as Marketing, Communications, and
Advertising Coordinator and Vanessa Torres
as our Events Coordinator. Both are excited to
be part of the team and have hit the ground
running! Nicole has been busy growing our
Social Media platforms, media relationships,
and advertising opportunities, while Vanessa
is busy growing our event participation and
ambassador program.
We are so proud of the economic development
growth here in Palm Desert and we are just
tickled pink about our new additions at the
Chamber and around town.
