However, please remember that the models in each store have been there for a while and, like a good pair of leather shoes, they’ll have softened and mellowed with use. UPHOLSTERY CARE Your furniture is brand new and will probably feel firmer than the one in store, even more so if you chose to cover it in a thicker or stiffer fabric. Don’t worry. With regular use the upholstery will soon soften to give you the comfort and support you selected. To maintain the support, keep your sofa looking good and to last longer, here are some simple tips as demonstrated in store. • First, if you have cushions that contain feathers, you will need to plump them every day. If you have foam cushions, then you should rotate and flip them on a weekly basis. Plump up your cushions Frames Each Multiyork frame is made from high quality hardwood with springs forged from high tensile steel. They’re so strong most sofas come with a fifteen year guarantee and if used correctly require no maintenance. However, it helps to make sure sofas are standing on a level floor. Also, on models with polished legs, check from time to time that they are screwed-in tight. It’s wise to use ‘castor-cups’ for polished legs with castors on wooden, tiled or vinyl floors. You can purchase these from the store. Although the furniture is well built, it will last longer if you can persuade little ones not to sit on the arms or use it as a trampoline. However inviting it looks!! Dismantling Many of our frames can be made to dismantle, handy for getting through narrow doorways or upstairs. STYLES FABRICS CHOICE • If you tend to use one side of a sofa more than the other, or one chair more than another, try swapping the cushions occasionally to even wear. • Another useful tip for rectangular cushions is to turn the interiors from back to front inside the cases, ensuring the whole cushion gets equal wear. If the interior feels a bit tight, don’t worry, it was designed that way to fill the case. • Remember sofa and chair cushions can be different shapes and sizes so make a clear note of which interiors are taken from which covers if you remove them. Also, take care not to damage the teeth of zips when you remove them. If you have chosen this option and need to dismantle your furniture at any time all you will need is two 13mm open ended spanners or a socket set and to follow these instructions. Step 1 – undo the zip and remove the cover Step 2 – undo the zips on the cream base cloth Step 3 – locate and remove the upper bolts at the back of each arm and repeat with the lower bolt. The back of the frame can now be removed by carefully lifting it upwards Step 4 – tilt the sofa forwards to gain access to the bolts under the seat and remove Step 5 – locate and remove the remaining bolts on the outside of each arm Your sofa should now be in 4 pieces – two arms, a back and a base. Just reverse the process to put your sofa back together in its’ new location. N.B. Should you have a sofa bed which dismantles, before you follow step 2 you will need to tie the bed mechanism securely between the front bars, top and bottom, with strong cord. You can then proceed to dismantle the frame as above. Make sure you have some help as a sofa bed is extremely heavy. In the very rare event that a frame feels loose, you now know where to tighten it up - which you should do as soon as you notice the looseness to avoid damage. If you need help, don’t hesitate to call the store or go online for further instructions at www.multiyork. co.uk/why-multiyork/care-guide/ dismantling-your-sofa Two more things to note about a sofa bed. First, don’t fold it away with sheets and blankets in place as that will strain the frame. Second, if the mattress isn’t used regularly the bed should be periodically pulled out, aired, and the mattress turned. Another feature of natural fabric is cotton seeds. They are found on 100% cotton fabrics that have not been dyed or bleached. All fabrics available from Multiyork comply with the relevant British Standards. Of course, over time, colours will lose some vibrancy and the material will naturally relax a little. However, here are some recommendations to extend the life of your fabric. Pile fabrics, like velvet and chenille, look rich and luxurious because of the way light reflects on the pile to give that lighter and darker effect. This is naturally emphasised as the pile flattens in regular use, particularly on seats, arms and backs. If it should look a little faded or dull, brush the pile in the opposite direction. Most important, as our fabrics are mainly natural, don’t place furniture in direct sunlight because too much strong light or heat will make any fabric fade or shrink. Also, keep furniture at least two feet away from radiators or open fires. Try not to let the fabric get soiled because a build up of grime and grease acts like an abrasive to speed up wear and leads to colour loss. Covers should be cleaned every 12 to 18 months, depending on use, and we recommend regular brushing or vacuuming. Be careful not to vacuum feather cushions as the feathers can eventually be pulled through the fabric. Natural fabrics – particularly linens or cotton - are irregular in their weave and so they contain ‘slubs’. These are not faults, they’re a Over time, it is inevitable that there’ll be some movement with removable covers and the covers will need gentle re-dressing with the tailoring bat in your customer care pack. The movement in some pile fabrics, especially chenille, can be more pronounced, so to compensate we fit grippers down the inside of each arm which you’ll need to remove from the cover before cleaning Things your furniture won’t like are: shoe buckles and polish, sharp or pointed jewellery and pets. Cats can cause serious damage sharpening their claws on furniture and unfortunately the natural oils in an animals coat will, after a while, build up a serious stain on your covers. Pilling Pilling is a characteristic of many upholstery fabrics, and results from excess fibre coming away from the surface of the material. This release of excess fibre results in small balls or “pills” forming on the surface of the material. TAILORING BAT This is similar to the fuzzing experienced with a new carpet, or the pilling of a new sweater. This does not mean that the fabric is disintegrating or will leave a bald area on the cover. REPLACEABLE COVERS As with carpets and sweaters, the pilling will persist until the excess fibre is gone and then it will cease. Unzip the cushion covers and ease them off. The best treatment whilst this is happening is to simply shave the fabric with a battery operated furniture or sweater shaver to remove the pills and restore the look of the cover. This may need to be done 3 – 4 times but the pilling on the surface will begin to diminish and ultimately stop. When your upholstery starts to show the signs of everyday use, it’s simple to take off the covers for dry cleaning or washing – the tab in the cover seam will tell you which method is recommended. Here’s a step by step guide: The main cover is held firmly in place by a concealed zip at the back. Undo this first. If your sofa has legs, loosen them to release any fabric tucked under them. Use the special tag to gently loosen the fabric which is tucked down behind the seat. Certain fabrics such as chenille may move Cleaning your covers Arm protectors play a major part in protecting your new sofas from every day grime transferring onto the arms of your new furniture. Ordering them at the same time as your sofa will ensure a perfect colour match, they can be ordered at any time though. Fabric Protector If, like most Multiyork customers, you’ve had your furniture treated with a fabric protector, you can be confident it will resist most every day spills. Just quickly dab or blot them away (don’t rub them), and all should be well – but in the event of a major problem, you can call for expert advice on – 0800 011 4230. Your sofa should be dusted with a soft clean cloth. We suggest one is kept for sole use on your leather furniture. Also, from time to time the base will benefit from a light vacuuming. LEATHER CARE An occasional very gentle wipe with a slightly damp cloth will keep the grime at bay. Never use soap or household cleaners which will build up a sticky residue on the leather. The good news is that spills and stains will usually respond rapidly to warm water – needing only a surface-wipe or dab. Followed by a dab with a damp cloth rinsed in clean water. Leave it to dry for three or four days. Never, NEVER soak the leather. For further advice we recommend you contact a professional cleaning company. Grease should just be dabbed away, leaving the residue to gradually dissipate into the leather. On semi-aniline leather a gentle rub will often re-arrange the pigment enough to remove the stain. But be gentle. And a final maintenance tip: If one side of a sofa is used more regularly than the other, it’s advisable to swap the cushions over from time to time to even-out any wear. It is also a good idea to occasionally turn the cushion interiors as well. And although leather is remarkably forgiving, it’s also wise to position the furniture away from fires, strong sunlight or radiators, which can dry or fade the leather. So now you have the picture. What makes every Multiyork sofa so special, including leather sofas, is the choice of comfort levels, superb springing, a hardwood frame and a long, long life – guaranteed. Also an optional leather warranty. Finally, for real peace of mind, Multiyork offers a leather care kit as well as a leather warranty covering accidental damage – please ask in store for details. A final furnishing fact: if you’ve ever wondered why there’s always some fabric in a cushion cover, it’s to stop air being trapped inside and ‘squeaking’ when you sit down allowing air to escape at an even rate. The fabric also stops the cushion from slipping on the sofa. Leather adds luxury and beauty, enormous strength and comfort all year round. As a natural material it carries the marks and gentle shading which make each piece of furniture unique. Above all it will mellow gracefully and even improve with age. Natural characteristics of leather Leather is a natural product with all that this implies, shade, grain variations and natural marking add to its charm. Each hide has its own characteristics. The marks which we consider are natural to leather are the following: CLOSED SCAR COLOUR DIFFERENT GRAIN DIFFERENT INSECT BITES • Scars – these are caused in many ways, often because of barbed wire fences. As with humans, the scars heal but often leave fine lines. The healed or closed scars are not to be confused with open scars that are automatically rejected during manufacturing. • Creases – these normally appear in the neck area of the hide. They can, because of their heavy grain, look attractive and add to the natural characteristics of the leather. • Colour variation – each animal is different, therefore each hide will have a slightly different shade. • Bite Marks – cattle are still attacked by insects, these occur as tiny marks on the surface. • Veins – the veins will appear on the hide, again this is a natural characteristic from the cattle hide. LOW GRAIN HEALED SCAR STYLES VEINING FABRICS WRINKLE CHOICE These are all features of the leather, not faults. They have no weakening effect on the hide, they are only surface variations. It is what gives real wood its character. Real wood features naturally-occurring knots and variations in the grain with oak featuring distinctive flecks which is all part of its natural beauty. Use a good quality wood polish to keep your furniture clean and to give a rich, low-lustre. We recommend avoiding spray and silicone polishes as these can lift the wood colour and create a bloom on the finish. It’s a good idea to test your polish on an area that is out of sight before polishing the piece itself. Polish regularly as dust can result in fine scratches when everyday objects are moved. The colour of all wood furniture mellows slightly with age making it look better and better. It’s normal to notice slight colour variations within one piece of furniture as no two pieces of wood are exactly the same colour. Avoid positioning your furniture in strong direct sunlight. You may want to use a polish that contains a UV absorber as this will protect from fading rapidly in the sunlight. When polishing always wipe in the direction of the wood grain. All our wood pieces are hand-finished by craftsmen so there might be differences in shade and shape. This adds to their appearance as they won’t have a ‘cookie cut’ machined look. Wipe up spills immediately and check liquid hasn’t seeped under any objects where it can ‘pool’ and dry, causing damage to the finish. For some pieces our craftsmen use special techniques to distress the wood, creating an attractive aged appearance. As this is completed by hand there may be slight variations in the final piece. As wood is a natural product it’ll adapt to its environment, retaining moisture in a humid environment and losing moisture in a dry environment. That means, in time, the wood will grow or shrink slightly and create some unevenness or possibly fine cracks. This is a natural ageing process and nothing to worry about. It’s just more added character. Do not place hot items directly onto the wood surface as the heat will cause white marks. Instead, use coasters when placing hot tableware on wood to prevent heat rings. Do not place furniture near to strong heat as this will dry out the moisture in the grain. For real peace of mind, Multiyork offers a cabinet warranty covering accidental damage – please ask in store for details. VENEER NATURAL WOOD CHARACTERISTICS COLOUR/GRAIN VARIATION COLOUR/GRAIN VARIATION STYLES MEDULLARY RAYS FABRICS CHOICE KNOTS We often use veneer in our furniture. Veneer is real wood cut finely for decorative purposes. Occasionally we use man-made timber to strengthen the real wood veneer. Our veneer isn’t made from foil or film that’s used in mass produced furniture and gives a uniform look. Our veneer features all the charm and character of real wood.
