INTRODUCTION
In the south of France, on the edge of the "Parc National des Cévennes" The river
Tarn rises from its source at 1575 m altitude and flows as a rapid mountain river.
Later it has a slow fall, ideal for canoe and kayak sport.
In contrast with the activity of the river, the rest of the Causses are desolate and
rough, from these plateaus you have a magnificent view of the river.
The chalky soil of the Limestone has given rise to some beautiful caves, of which
Aven Armand on the Causse Méjean is the best known.

PLACES OF INTEREST
Since June 28, 2011 the area Causses and Cévennes are on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and therefore is in the
company of Carcassonne, the Canal du Midi, the Pont du Gard, etc.
The site was inscribed on the basis that it bears a ‘unique testimony to a cultural tradition’, as it is an outstanding
example of Mediterranean agro-pastoralism, and ‘an outstanding example of human interaction with the
environment’, as the landscape demonstrates the way the system has developed over millennia.
It is in this extraordinary place, the Gorges du Tarn (also called the "Grand Canyon of France"), that JEKA have
since 1977 offered a unique range of culture and sights (especially the cave Aven Armand) and a wide variety of
activities in the great outdoors (wonderful walks, canoeing, rock climbing, caving, via ferrata ...) to youth groups.

Aven Armand
Location: side road D986 between Meyrueis and Sainte-Enimie.
One of the most famous landmarks in the Gorges du Tarn is the
magnificent cave Aven Armand, located on the Causse Mejean.
In 2013 the cave was included in the list of the 10 most beautiful caves
in France!
history: In 1897 two men came with ropes to investigate a crack in the
Causse Mejean which one of them had noticed the previous day. They discovered a cave large enough to house
the Notre Dame Cathedral, which houses a petrified forest of more than 400 stalagmites (the largest is 30 m high,
a world record).
Today you descend by train through a tunnel of 180m down into the cave. A French-speaking guide leads you
along a lighted path around. Take a warm sweater, because it is only 10 ° C in the cave! In 2014, the lighting was
completely renovated with colorful LEDs and is complemented by projected images.
Duration of the visit: 45 minutes.

Montpellier-le-Vieux
Location: 12 km south of Peyreleau and Rozier, side road of the
D110.
This is not a town or village, as the name might suggest but a
hiker's paradise. It's a chaotic rock formation on the Causse Noir,
with an area of 120 hectares which from afar looks like the ruins of
a great city. In this maze of streets, vaults, paths and bridges using
markers and a description you can plan a hike from 1 to 3 hours, no
guide. There is also the option of a train (Le Petit Train) to drive
through the area.

La Maison des
Vautours
Location: Le Truel, 3 miles east of Le Rozier, along the D996.
After more than 40 years absence, you can admire again the vultures
(vautours in French) in the neighbourhood of the Gorges de la Jonte.
In 1970 a program was started to reintroduce this bird of prey in his
natural environment. And with success! Now there are more than 200
vultures living in this park. Since 1998 the vultures have their own “house” namely “le Belvédère des Vautours”.
The building, lying partially in the rocks between the flanks of the Gorges de la Jonte, goes perfectly together with
the environment.
In the building you can find some information concerning a guided tour and you can also view a video about the
vulture and his reintroduction in this region. From the terrace you have a beautiful sight of the valley. The perfect
place to watch the vultures during their flight.

agreement with your bus driver, to stop at the Maison des Vautours. Also from the car park it is possible to see
the vultures flying high in the sky!

Chateau de
Peyrelade
Location: between Boyne and Rivière-sur-Tarn, rock above the
D907. From the ruins of this 12th century castle, you have a
beautiful view of the surroundings.
Opening hours: 10 am. to 18 h.

During the summer months there are also medieval events organised on certain days such as art studios, dance
initiation, archery.

Tip: you can combine a walk around the castle with a visit to the swimming pool at Rivière-sur-Tarn.
Pas de Soucy
Location: 2 km north of Les Vignes, along D907bis.
A bizarre viewpoint just outside Les Vignes. The Tarn disappears
below a chaotic accumulation of huge boulders, a result of collapse
and subsidence, which is the result of earthquakes, the last of which
was in 580.
The legend provides a more poetic explanation: Saint Enimie was
close upon the heels of the devil, who tried to flee through the gap.
She begged the rocks for help and a huge collapse and one huge boulder in particular, the "Roque Sourde"
threatened to crush Satan, he could escape through a cleft in the river-bed and in this way reach hell.
On top of Roque Sourde is an observation post, with souvenir stalls. Admission: € 1.50 pp.
Point-Sublime
Location: Saint-Georges de Lévéjac way from the D46.
This is a small plateau on the edge of the Causse de Sauveterre. You have
a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding area of Les Vignes and the
Cirque des Baumes.
It is accessible by road from Les Vignes in the direction of Saint-Rome-deDolan (13 km), or also via a very steep and narrow footpath from Les
Baumes Basses. You have a wonderful view of the canyon of the Tarn, Les
Detroits and Le Pas de Soucy.
Admission is free. There is also a cafeteria.

La Sablière
Location: 3 miles north of Le Rozier towards Les Vignes, on the opposite side of the
Tarn to the D907.
This is called a village, but in fact it is hardly even a hamlet. It is only a handful of
old houses, beautifully situated on the left bank of the Tarn, between Les Vignes,
Le Rozier, and protected by the impressive Cinglegros rock.
The hamlet is very picturesque and a favorite subject for amateur photographers
and film makers. It is accessible on foot via the hiking trail from the Tarn valley
between Les Vignes and Le Rozier.
Please note that it is not possible to walk through the hamlet
itself (private land)!
Roc des Hourtous
Location: across from the D16.
This impressive viewpoint is situated on the Causse Mejean,
not far from Point Sublime. It lies on the other side of the Tarn
and is much less crowded.
You can reach this point by car from Les Vignes or La Malene
(10 hairpin bends!), by bike or on foot as a day trip from Les
Vignes.
There is a cafeteria with snacks and a picnic area on the edge of
the plateau. Here you can buy a ticket to the viewpoint (€ 1).
Dargilan: de
"Roze Grot"

Location: Causse Noir, D139, between Meyrueis and Veyreau.
In this cave you will descend on foot along a long tunnel. The
"Great Hall" is 142 m long by 44 m wide and 35 m high, which makes it one of the largest known natural halls of
Europe.
A 1.5 km long illuminated trail leads past some beautiful formations of stalagmites and several smaller rooms.
Not wheelchair accessible.

Millau
Millau is a busy town with about 23 000 inhabitants at the confluence of the Tarn and
Dourbie, known for its leather and glove manufacturing industry.
The Old Town has a typical southern charm and deserves a visit: the Causse museum
where you can see how leather gloves and handbags are made in the traditional way ;
the Church of Our Lady; the belfry; the old fortified city gates; the St Martin church from the 17th century . Rue
Droite which cuts the old city in half is part of the Roman road and forms since the Middle Ages one of Millaus
major trading blocks.
On Wednesday and Friday morning there is a market in Millau. On Friday, the market is most extensive with
several typical local products and souvenirs, while Wednesday is more limited and caters mainly for the locals for
their daily shopping. The covered market "Les Halles" is open on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday,
from 8am to 1pm.
Every Sunday morning there is a flea market from 7:30 am to 12:30 pm in Millau.
And during the summer season you can also go there by night for markets on certain Mondays. For more

Millau- Musée de Millau et des Causses
Natural History Museum (geology, paleontology, Gallo-Roman and medieval archeology) in the old city at Place
Foch.
Since 1988 it is complemented by the "Maison de la peau et du gant", a section dedicated to the famous local
glove industry and leather processing industry.

Millau Viaduct

Tallest in the world and taller than the Eiffel Tower, slung
across the valley of the river Tarn, the Viaduct of Millau
(Viaduc de Millau) is the chosen solution for taking the
A75 motorway from Clermont-Ferraud south to Beziers.
This is cheaper than the alternative of tunnelling through
the hills flanking the river, and shortens the journey by
100km and by up to 4 hours in the holiday season, as well
as removing much traffic pollution caused by continual
traffic jams for local inhabitants in Millau. The Millau
Viaduct is also the longest cable-stayed bridge in the
world.

Near the bridge is a permanent visitors’centre with stunning views of the bridge and across the valley which it

Tip: You can visit during Millau Tour 9, preferably on Friday, because there in the morning is the main market. You
can combine this with a visit to the viaduct, and / or an activity in the wild water basin, a descent by barque,
paintball, paragliding or bowling.
Mende
The city has about 13 500 inhabitants and is the administrative capital of La Lozere, the
least populated department of France.
Dominated by the imposing 14th-century cathedral, the old centre of Mende has
preserved its medieval character. This ancient city, with winding alleys and surrounded by green slates, invites
you to go exploring.
At the Syndicat d'Initiative on the boulevard Henri Bourrillon (near the cathedral) city maps are available. The
walks indicated in colour lead you along the most beautiful sights.
The cathedral deserves a visit. In the rue de l'Ange, you can visit a permanent exhibition of local crafts. Here you
will find certainly great ideas for souvenirs!

ACTIVITIES
Hiking
The Gorges du Tarn and Jonte Gorges offer plenty of opportunities for
hiking. The attraction of walking here is clear: the southern sun and
the scenery are most inviting. The short, flat valley walks make ideal
day trips, especially on the Causses. In almost all villages there are
enough roads or paths to narrow the height difference of 400 to 600
m and to seek the silence of the plateaus. Outside the villages
opportunities are limited and climbs or descents often happen at your
own risk. Confine yourself to the paths on the map because the
rugged landscape can sometimes provide unwelcome surprises.
A) Walking maps
To observe the capabilities of individual participants and of the group as a whole, you are best to start
with a warm-up expedition, before you begin more strenuous walks. Start early, so you can avoid the
worst heat.
As an indispensable addition to the general map IGN 3615 which you will receive from Jeka in your final
pack, we can recommend the topographic maps (1: 25,000) of the IGN (blue line). You can cover the
whole area with a pair of maps from this series:
- IGN – TOP 25 – 2640 OT (Gorges du Tarn)
- IGN – TOP 25 – 2641 OT (Millau)
In addition, you can also find publications in the tourist offices of the local villages Le Rozier, Les Vignes and
Sainte-Enimie. Some deluxe editions are quite expensive. Cheaper publications are reproduced annually and
provide an, admittedly limited, list of local walks.
An interesting and not too expensive recommendation is the series Walking Guides Sentiers de Pays, these
trails are in addition to the routes of the great hikes (GR) that traverse the area. The Sentiers de pays empire is
known throughout France: a dense network of clearly marked, well-maintained hiking trails that give keen
walkers the opportunity to discover the region at a leisurely pace.
Of course, there are also the "Guides de Tourisme" of Michelin (green set), which illustrate both tourist
information as well as a lot of historical background and geological history. The guide ‘Gorges du Tarn,
Cévennes, Bas Languedoc’ is no. 13 in the series.
B) Guided Walks
If you want to spend a day or 2 getting to know the area, Jeka has mapped out for you some adventurous tours
with the assistance of a licensed French guide.
These tours (usually 12 to 15km) are a great way to discover not only the amazing natural heritage of this
region (flora, fauna, geology), but also the typical architecture of the Great Causses and the rural traditions of
the ancestors. The guide will show you the most breathtaking spots of the Gorges du Tarn.
The French guide will provide a number of binoculars , to enable your group to fully appreciate the
surroundings and nature and especially to see the vultures.

C) Nordic Walking
This kind of hiking is a very dynamic way to discover this region, guided by a licensed French guide. He provides
the necessary equipment, the whole activity takes about 21/2 hrs incl. warming up, the walk itself and
stretching excercises.

Geocaching
Geocaching is the current form of treasure hunting! People hide objects (small or large), and you go after it. It's an
easy way to take a walk or make a visit to a city more interesting and to establish a goal. Also in the Tarn Gorges,
this fine (addictive) hobby has now made its appearance, there are lots of geocaches in the accessible area (a few
minutes, half day or full day) from any Jeka-house. Look at www.geocaching.com : there you can create a free
account, search the geocaches, prepare your walk and afterwards log the caches found.
Jeka France has 3 GPS devices (Garmin eTrex 30) available which can be rented by groups. Or, you can of course
bring their own hiking GPS or use the GPS in your smartphone (note: you will need to have a 3G connection and
with intensive use of the GPS, the battery will be drained quickly!).

Swimming
The rivers (the Tarn, Jonte and Dourbie) have some spots where the
water forms almost motionless pools. These are of course ideal
opportunities for (free) swimming or within your group to practice
some water sports. You will need water sandals due to the rocks and
stones under foot.
There are also several outdoor pools:

The Centre Aquatique in Millau, including a 50m pool (8 lanes), a children's pool, a diving tower (height:
1.3m and 5m) and a slide (36m long, 5m high). Open daily from 10am to 19:30. Please note that the pool is
closed from 11th to 13th July 2015 because of a competition.

The municipal pool in Rivière-sur-Tarn (Peyrelade) is closed until further notice
Swimwear Regulations Because of the strict hygiene standards in France it is necessary to wear proper swimming
trunks at the pools, swim shorts (long or short) are not allowed!

Canoeing
In almost all villages in the Tarn you can rent canoes for a whole or half day.
JEKA has made special arrangements with some boat owners. The group can be
picked up and returned home by minibus. Use of life jackets and waterproof
container are included in the price. Appropriate footwear must be provided, shoes
with laces are recommended – water ‘slippers’ are not allowed!
As a group manager you have to sign a contract that includes the following key
points:
- on behalf of all group group members you declare that everyone can swim and
agree to wear the life jacket;
- Loss or damage to equipment will be charged and must be paid direct to the canoe company;
- Everyone is personally responsible for their own valuable items (camera, sunglasses etc ...)

You pay on the spot to the boat owner for the number of persons were booked.
Late cancellations of participants are not deducted!
The time required to take a certain route may be estimated but is highly dependent on the number of breaks and
activities (swimming, sunbathing, ...) on the way.
Qualified Instructors:
for safety reasons, it is necessary for any youth group to have 1 qualified instructor per 8 participants (max 10
canoes)

Mountainbike
Because of the heavy traffic you are advised not take the main road (D907). On top
of the Causses there are paths and asphalted roads where it is ideal for cycling, not
just because there is less traffic, but also so that you can enjoy the peace and quiet
and the impressive natural beauty. To suggest possible routes, you can contact
your local JEKA rep.
Maximum number: there are a max. 30 bikes available, larger groups should
arrange to split the group into different days or ½ day each

- full day: € 20
- transport of bikes to Jeka House or to Montpellier-le-Vieux : € 30
- optional: guide to accompany you: € 110 per ½ day per group (regardless of number)
Please Note: you must pay for lost or damaged materials. Upon receipt of the bikes you sign a contract agreeing
this and confirming the prices of the various bicycle parts.
Please note: if you have the bikes delivered to your Jeka house, you will always start with a steep climb of 1 to 2
hours to reach the Causse (average gradient of 7 to 9%!), Not easy ...
Tips:
- However, you can also choose to have the bikes bought up (the Causse).
If you do this, then can be combined with an activity in Montpellier-le-Vieux, for example.:
> morning: activity in Montpellier-le-Vieux, eg, via ferrata, accro roc, rock climbing (transport can be incl.).
> lunchtime: the bikes are delivered to Montpellier-le-Viewx (1 package price for the whole group, see above) >
Afternoon ½ day bike ride on the Causse Noir; the monitor of the 1st activity can bring you back to the house if you're traveling to Millau (eg with Tour. 9) you can collect the bikes yourselves (= no transport costs).
> You can also create a 'flat' ride, i.e. along the left bank of the Tarn (=
possible to Peyreleau)
Accro Roc
If you like to pretend to be Tarzan, this will be the perfect activity for
you! You have to follow a course across ropes and cables, high
between the rocks of Montpellier-le-Vieux. During the course there
are different obstacles like a climbing wall and zip wire …. Great fun for
all!
Everyone gets a climbing harness with 2 karabiners which are fixed on
a safety rope. There are also experienced instructors to accompany the group.
This activity is only possible in the morning. After half an hour there can start another group of 12 persons
accompanied by a French qualified instructor. (max. 4 groups of 12)
REMARK: Limited to 19 people for groups that stay in Les Vignes and do not have own transport.
You can combine this activity with a bike tour (bikes can be brought up to Montpellier-le-Vieux), horse riding, via
ferrata, rock climbing, a game of volleyball or a walk through the area of Montpellier-le-Vieux. You can take a
picnic and, in the case of bad weather, can be diverted to a cave (300m²)
Price 2016: €19,50pp with transport included. Deduct €2,50pp if using your own transport

Via Ferrata
Are you looking for an extra kick and find the accro roc course not adventurous enough? Then the via ferrata is for
you: while accro roc is more of a horizontal course (max. 10 m above the ground), with the via ferrata you go
much higher. Depending on the course you can be suspended 50 and sometimes more than 100m above the
ground!
JEKA works with 2 organisations:
A) Maison des Guides Sportifs (Le Rozier) www.guidestarnjonte.com
A qualified French instructor can take a group of 8 people, there are
3 monitors available, so only 3 groups per half day can be booked!
There are 2 courses available, both only available in the morning:

Light course: for groups wishing to have an initiation in via
ferrata – not too long, not too high – descent by rappel or on
foot
Price 2016: € 176 per group of 8

Extreme course (see 1st photo): for groups wanting to increase the adrenaline. Note: not suitable for
people with vertigo! It is not possible to leave the activity, once started it is necessary to keep going until
the end!
Price 2016: € 248 per group of 8. Minimum age: 12 years (with min. height of 1m40)
Please note: the price is fixed per group so with less than 8 you will pay the same , a 9th and 10th person may
join the group free of charge (provided you have your own transport), but with more than that you will have to
pay for a 2nd guide.
Montpellier-le-Vieux (Causse Noir) www.montpellierlevieux.com
This via ferrata between the chaotic rock formations in
Montpellier-le-Vieux differs from that of the Maison des Moniteurs
Sportifs because:

it begins with an underground route (-50m)
at various points along the way it is possible to ‘step out’
(interesting for people with a fear of heights)
along the way there are 5 crevices of up to 200m long which
are crossed by means of a zip line – guaranteed fun!
Price 2016: € 17 pp inc. Entrance to Montpellier-le-Vieux &
instruction. If transport is required (by minibus with the guides) add
€2,50pp
(it is not necessary to have a min.8 in order to book)
This activity is only possible in the morning. Every half hour a group of 12 can start under the guidance of a
certified monitor (max. 4 groups). Minimum age: 12 years.
Tip: can be combined with rock climbing or GPS to spend a whole day in the park.

Descent Aven Armand
Of course, the visit of this cave is on the program of most groups who
come to the Gorges du Tarn, often it is included in a bus tour (Tour 1
or 2).
But it is also possible to visit the cave via the original route through
which it was discovered, i.e.. through the vertical opening!
Participants are lowered one by one on a rope by a licensed French
monitor. When you pass by the so-called. "Chimney" , you are
situated at the top of the ceiling of this immense hall. That moment is
really wonderful: you hang around 30m above the ground and get a
unique and magnificent view of the cave which is magically
illuminated. After everyone has descended, a guide gives a complete
tour of the cave. Then the train will take the group back to the top.
Note: this activity is only available in the evening, when ‘normal’
visitors have gone

cave and the little train)
Speleology
The Causses are the origin of modern caving, this no doubt has to do
with the abundant limestone, giving rise to outstanding cave
formation. JEKA works with the Maison des Guides Sportifs (Le
Rozier). One guide is provided per group of 8, with a max 3 groups per
half day. Duration: 3 hrs. Minimum age: 6 yrs. This can also be booked
as an evening activity (6pm till 9pm).
Price 2016: - basic course (initiation level) € 184 per group of max. 8 pers., NEW!
Underground Via Ferrata: €280 per group of max. 8 pers.
incl. equipment (overalls, helmet, lamp).
Please note: the price is fixed per group so with less than 8 you will pay the same , a 9th and 10th person may join
the group free of charge (provided you have your own transport), but with more than that you will have to pay for
a 2nd guide.
Rafting on the Tarn
The river is descended by a raft of approx. 5 x 2m (route of around
10km). Each boat can accommodate max. 10 persons and is led by a
qualified guide. there are max. 3 boats available. Experience is not
required but all participants must be able to swim!
Price 2016: € 200 per raft, with guide included.

The Tarn is not a wild river, rafting is also much calmer here than for example on the Inn in Austria. For a group
that is looking for a more sporting activity on the water, we
recommend either canoeing or the whitewater course in Millau.
Wildwater
After the last flood in Millau (Nov 1994. 8,60m) it was decided to add
on the Tarn an additional hydraulic drainage canal on the left bank,
just before the characteristic bridge Lerouge. In order to make this
channel useful during low tide, the city chose to make a whitewater
course. The straight track is 250m long, has a drop of about 3 m and
can be changed by the use of controllable stones. There are several
eddies which make perfect exits.
Professional kayakers and surfers use this basin for practice (including
preparation for the Olympics, internships) or to participate in
competitions. But these rapids also offer opportunities for beginners.
For Jeka groups a package of 2 hours is offered under the supervision
of certified instructors, you can choose 2 activities (each lasts one
hour) from the following list:

- Hydro speed (surfing the waves using a float)
- Hot Dog (inflatable canoe, max 8 pers)
- Tubing (max 8 pers) or Bellyak (max. 4 pers)

- Stand up paddle (try to stand upright on a large surfboard; max 12 pers)

Important : the group leader has to sign a document on the spot which confims that all participants can swim for
at least 25m (and also for some metres under water)!

During the summer it is possible to cross the Tarn via a pontoon.

Canyoning
An extremely adventurous way to explore the rocks and the water of the
Causses. Abseiling, jumping, swimming, sliding, ... all under the professional
supervision of the Maison des Guides Sportifs. The activity is only possible in
the afternoon and lasts up to 6 hours. One guide will accompany each group
of 8 people. Max. 3 groups per afternoon. The min. age is 12 years, and each
participant must be able to swim. Sturdy shoes with laces must be worn

2016: € 304 per group of max. 8 pers., incl. equipment (wetsuit, helmet) and
transport if necessary.
Please note: The price per guide is fixed for up to 8 people, groups with less
than 8 will pay the full price, with a 9th person a 2nd group must be formed!
Rockclimbing
The Gorges de la Jonte offers excellent opportunities for climbers of all
abilities. It is the steepest canyon of the area with rock faces from 50 to 200
feet high! The Gorges du Tarn, between Les Vignes and Le Rozier, is great for
abseiling, both for beginners and more advanced, hanging on a rope you will
enjoy some beautiful views!
JEKA works with 2 organisations for this activity:
A) Maison des Guides Sportifs (Le Rozier), www.guidestarnjonte.com
These instructors normally work with fixed groups of max. 8 people (because of the eight places in their minivans),
with each qualified French monitor. There are only 3 monitors available, so only max. 3 groups per half day can be
booked! Minimum age is 8 years. This activity can also be done as an evening activity (6pm to 9pm).
Price 2016: € 176 per group of 8 pers. duration: 3 hours.
Please note: the price per group is fixed per monitor; for a group with less than 8 people you will also pay the full
price! A 9th and 10th person are permitted provided that you have your own transport.

The hiking paradise of Montpellier-le-Vieux with its chaotic rock formations offers climbing opportunities for all
levels. The rock walls for beginners and advanced are standing together nicely (at the picnic area) so that the
supervisor can plan a suitable course for each individual group member.

GPS tour
Montpellier-le-Vieux is an ideal location for a GPS initiation. This activity is available
in the afternoons when the group has chosen another activity for the morning
(accro roc / via ferrata or rock climbing). The guide first explains the principles by
way of a short quest to about 8 coordinates (waypoints). Then the group can go
"independently" (= min. 2 by GPS for safety) looking for some 16 waypoints around
the park. Walkie-talkies are also provided. There are max. 12 GPS devices, so max.
24 persons can participate simultaneously. Larger groups may split their numbers
between the first activity and GPS tour. Price 2016: € 11 pp
Two Day trip
Strict regulations apply in the Gorges du Tarn with regard to wild camping in that it is absolutely forbidden! In
theory a group wishing to have a 2-day expedition will have to book
(and pay for) an existing campsite.
JEKA , however have an agreement with some locals that permit
groups to stay on their land

with team building? Then this paintball is definitely worth
considering. Just off the highway in Millau there are some nice
gaming sites where you must work together systematically to

You can take an adventurous horse trekking tour under the guidance
of a French certified monitor with a group of max. 10 persons. Larger
groups can be divided into smaller groups that take the walk

JEKA works with the riding school in Le Sonnac.
The riding school is located on top of the Causse Noir.
Because of the potential heat during the day these tours are only in
the mornings or organized in the late afternoon.

Downstream by barque
Recommended for those who like to admire the most beautiful and
narrowest part of the Tarn from the river in the most relaxed way
possible. A barque is a flat, motorised boat which seats 6 passengers
and is guided by a ‘batelier’’.
The boat trip takes about 1 hour (8 km) and along the way the driver
gives some explanations (in French or English) about the landscape,
the flora and fauna. After the trip you are returned to your starting point.
There are 2 routes to choose from:

The trip starts in La Malene (12 km northeast of Les Vignes) and goes up to the Cirque des Baumes (near
the Jeka-house La Bergerie). This route goes along by Les Detroits, certainly the most beautiful and
impressive piece of the Gorges du Tarn: here the gap is narrowest between high rock walls.

Paragliding
On a warm day swarming in the air above Millau there are dozens of parachutes.
Because of the thermal is the perfect place to try out a maiden paragliding. For this
JEKA works with Millau Evasion (www.millau-evasion.com). Together with a certified
monitor you will make a tandem jump. With all the preparations included this activity
takes about 1hr. The first launch is planned for around 1pm. There are three "pilots"
available and a maximum of 6 rotations per afternoon can be performed. So max. 18
persons per afternoon can jump.

This activity can only go ahead in nice and warm weather (need thermals). You should
therefore plan this activity for early in your stay so that in case of bad weather, it will
still be possible to rearrange for later in the week.
Bowling
Just outside the center of Millau there is a 6-lane bowling alley with a
few pool tables and a bar.
Open: from 2pm (must be booked in advance !) JEKA groups can get a
special price up to 8pm.

There are tennis courts in Le Rozier, Rivière-sur-Tarn and Mostuéjouls.

Fishing
With a total length of 2743 km of rivers and streams the Lozère district is a paradise for the angler. The main rivers
are the Tarn, the Lot, Truyère, the Allier, the Chapeauroux, the Bès, the Tarnon and the Mimente. The main
species that you can find are trout, bullhead and barbel.
A fishing license is required.

EXCURSIONS
Here we give you an overview of the most interesting destinations for a day trip. You are in the heart of a region
that has much to offer in the way of beauty and variety.
Keep in mind that for the excursions 4, 5 and 6 you will be on the bus for at least 7
hours.
Tour 1: circuit Gorges +
Aven Armand
A relatively short but comprehensive exploration of the region! In the morning
takes you through Les Vignes and the D907B along the Tarn, with a first stop in
Sainte-Enimie. Free city tour, possibility of shopping. Or visit Le Vieux Logis, a small
folklore museum in the old town. Then via the D986 straight over the Causse
Méjean to the cave Aven Armand for a picnic and a guided tour.
Later, in the afternoon continue towards Meyrueis (with its’ cosy market square).
Back along the canyon of the Jonte (much narrower than that of the Tarn) and the
D996, with a possible stop at the Maison des Vautours' and then through Le Rozier
and drive back to the starting point.
Possible alternative: Dargilan 'Pink Cave'.
Recommended departure: 9am.
Tip for walkers: it is also possible to walk on foot from Aven Armand and Dargilan to the village of Les Douzes in
the valley of Jonte (both 8 km), where the bus collects the group. You do not, however, pass along Meyrueis.
Tour 2: Tour 1 + Mont
Aigoual
Same circuit as no. 1, with an added visit to the meteorological
observatory of Mont Aigoual (1567 m), about 40 km from Meyrueis.
Admission is free and there is a permanent exhibition with lots of
pictures, an overview of weather forecasts and weather information.
In clear weather, from the top orientation table, you have magnificent
views of the Causses and the Cévennes, the Alps as well as the
Pyrenees, the Mediterranean and the Languedoc.
Due to lack of time a stop at La Maison des Vautours' on this trip is not possible.

Tour 3 wolf park + Mende
The zoological park "Les Loups du Gévaudan" lies in the small village of Sainte-Lucie, a dozen miles north of
Marvejols. More than 100 wolves live here as well as in freedom in a wooded area of 4 hectares that
approximates their natural habitat. European animals live side by side with counterparts from Canada and
Mongolia. Contrary to popular claims, the wolf is a social animal and peaceful, with a strong sense of hierarchy
and family ties.
A permanent exhibition with an audiovisual show and a guided visit to the park can do a lot to eliminate many of
the prejudices about these intelligent animals. There is a souvenir shop, a picnic area and an observation post.

In afternoon you drive via the N108 to Mende for a short city visit. Then from there, you go along a beautiful link
road across the desolate Causse de Sauveterre back to the Gorges du Tarn.
Recommended departure: 9am
Tip: if you want to attend the feeding of the wolves? This only happens on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at
17h. In that case, this tour is best driven in the opposite direction: so Mende in the morning and the wolf park in
the afternoon.
Tour 4: Avignon
A visit to Avignon is not complete without a visit to the Papal Palace. This
residence, together with its’ palace and fortress, belonged to the largest
buildings of its time: 15 000 sqm area, divided into an old and a new part. A
guided tour takes about an hour.

Other attractions worth a visit are the Notre-Dame des Doms, some churches
and chapels, the Calvet Museum and the Petit Palais museum. The famous
bridge over the Rhone has just four arches intact.

Tour 5 Provence
Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, about 20 km from Avignon, is a typical Provencal market town known as the birthplace
of Nostradamus. You can visit some Roman ruins, and also a visit to
the old town is worthwhile.
Only 5 km from Saint-Remy on a a small plateau, is the picturesque
village of Les Baux-de-Provence. With a ruined castle and some
abandoned old houses the village is no more than a shadow of a great
past. Numerous Provencal shops make for a pleasant set up. From the
fortress tower you have a magnificent view of the Abbey of
Montmajour, Arles and the Camargue.
Beaucaire, halfway between Avignon and Arles, located at the junction
of the ancient road linking Italy and Spain. In the Middle Ages there
was a huge fair held here on the banks of the Rhone. Currently, you
can still visit the remains of a castle from the 11th century, with a nice
view of the Rhone valley and the Alpilles.
Recommended departure: 7am
Due to the busy schedule you would not arrive back until around 9pm! You
will spend around 8 hours on the bus.
Tour 6: Camargue
Aigues-Mortes is a complete walled city from the early 13th century,
built according to a linear rectangular diagram of 550 m at 300 m. The
city was designed as a bridgehead and harbour for the Crusades to
Palestine and is an exceptionally idyllic location amid the veins and
marshes of the Rhone delta.
In the summer months there is a pleasant bustle in the pedestrian
shopping streets of the city. The fortress tower (Tour de Constance)
and its ramparts can be visited.
A furter 30km further from Aigues-Mortes to the southeast is the extremely remote coastal village of Les
Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, surrounded by the sea and the lakes of the Camargue. In the summer the vast beach is
very busy. Every year in May, an important gypsy pilgrimage takes place.
The ancient Roman capital Arles today has 51 000 inhabitants and owes its fame to two of the most beautifully
preserved Gallo-Roman remains: the Arena, and the ancient Theatre. In the summer months this is also the site of
a famous annual theater and dance festival.

Tour 7 Cap d’Agde
At the foot of the "Mont Saint-Loup" (115 m) lies the family resort of
Cap d'Agde on the Mediterranean sea. The picturesque marina, 14 km
beach and the water park Aqualand amongst other things, makes this
holiday resort one of the main attractions in the Languedoc. An ideal
destination for a wonderful day of leisure!
Here there are all the facilities that you can expect from a modern
holiday destination. On the beach there are volleyball nets and all
sorts of rental services for pedalos and boats. The choice is yours.

Tour 8: Montpellierle-Vieux, La
Couvertoirade,
Roquefort
The chaos of Montpellier-le-Vieux, on the Causse Noir, is formed by
strangely shaped rock formations with an area of 120
hectares,through which there are several marked trails. Descend to
the Dourbie river,through a steep canyon between the Causse Noir
and Causse du Larzac past Nant.
La Couvertoirade, a strategically located fortress from the 12th
century on the plateau of Larzac, is a very picturesque place to wander
around and experience a piece of history. The fortress walls with two
gates and round towers have remained almost intact. In the city you
will find many artists and craftsmen.

In Roquefort you can visit the caves where the world famous Roquefort cheeses are maturing. Practically all the
cheese industry is located underground. Roquefort is the largest employer in the region: from sheep farmers to
sales outlets approximately 10 000 people live on the proceeds of these cheeses. The visit takes about an hour.
There are three cheese factories which open their caves to the public:

you can see how leather gloves and bags are made. There is

Tour 10: Ste-Enimie by
night
On Thursday evening in Sainte-Enimie there is a weekly night market: a
good opportunity to visit this medieval village – that is on the list of
"The most beautiful towns in France".
If you do not have your own bus with you this trip will depend on
having enough participants, or having hired a coach during the day it
may then be used for this evening excurision. If there is enough interest

Tour 11:
Palavas-les-Flots
Palavas is a cozy, small and quiet picturesque fishing village on the
Mediterranean where it can get quite busy during the summer
weekends. You can have a pleasant stroll through the city centre
and get something to eat or drink.
About 250 m from the center of Palavas there is a large sandy
beach where you can swim, play sports or just doing nothing.
Recommended departure: 8am. The return bus journey takes around 4.5 hours in total.
JEKA always advises that trips to the coast are undertaken during the week rather than at the
weekend when the roads become very overcrowded and you will spend a lot of time in traffic
jams!
Tip:
Palavas offers more variety (beach, shops, snack bars) than Le Cap d'Agde (there are eg.
Hardly any snack bars). Le Cap d'Agde (Tour 7) is best chosen only if the group wishes to go
to Aqualand.

In the village of Saint-Leons (20 km northwest of Millau) you
can immerse yourself in the world of insects in the Insects City
Micropolis.
The building features 15 indoor showrooms with over 70
species of insects and carnivorous plants, a 3D cinema, and a

PRACTICAL
INFORMATION
Banks
You will not find banks in the smaller villages, only in Meyrueis, Millau, Mende – i.e. at least 20 miles
from your accommodation.
ATMs in the Gorges du Tarn you will only find at the post office in La Malene and in Le Rozier
near the car park. These ‘remote’ machines are not replenished regularly and are often empty.
So it is not easy to withdraw cash locally, we recommend that you take enough cash from
home for at least the first few days of your camp until you can get to a bank or cash point
(whilst on a coach trip perhaps). If you wish, the instructors can come to visit you on the
first day of your camp to meet you and discuss your activities and it will also be possible
to pay them in full for your booked activities. There is also a safe deposit box with
numeric code in each house.
Bank Holidays
The France national holiday ‘Bastille Day’ is celebrated on July 14th, with celebrations taking place
in almost every village on either the 13th or 14th July. Also in most villages during the summer a
summer festival will take place.
For the activities and concerts taking place in the different villages you should consult the local
calendar that you can get from the local JEKA office.
Campfire
According to the law, it is strictly forbidden to build fires in the Gorges du Tarn and on the
plateau (Article. 31 of the Decree of the Parc National des Cévennes). This includes
barbecues!
Even smoking is not allowed in most of the villages on the road! The police constantly check and
the penalties are quite high.

Camping
The free pitching of tents is strictly prohibited by law in the Gorges du Tarn. Also on any land
next to the JEKA centres under no circumstances is it allowed to pitch tents, or park caravans
(Article. 30 of the Decree of the Parc National des Cévennes).

The village of Liaucous is 2 miles from Le Rozier.
Electricity
Electricity is 220 volt/alternating current, compatible with the 2-pin plug widely used
throughout Europe. For UK appliances you will need an adapter. Not every room in the JEKA
centres has sufficient electric points, an extension lead with extra sockets might be useful.
Pharmacies
In none of the villages where Jeka has houses is there a pharmacy.
In Aguessac, Millau, Meyrueis and Sainte-Enimie there are are one or more pharmacies. These are
therefore only accessible by private cars or taxi.
Opening hours for most pharmacies: 9:00 to 20:00, including Sundays and bank holidays.

Public Transport
An official bus service unfortunately does not exist enough in the Gorges du Tarn.
For most sports activities in the Gorges du Tarn itself monitors can provide transportation (eg.
Canoeing,
Montpellier-le-Vieux, Maison des Guides Sportifs, ...). For a journey to an activity further away (eg in
Millau.
Rafting, bowling, mountain bikes depot ...) it may be possible to combine it with a bus tour (eg Tour 9
to Millau.).

exhibitions and tourist activities. The tourist centres of Millau, Mende and
Sainte-Enimie are open the whole year.

Getting there and back
Outward journey overland
For overland tours by coach you depart from your local area on day 1 and travel to Dover to take an
evening ferry to Calais. From there you take the A26 to Arras then join the A1 to Paris then the A10
to Orleans, the A71 to Vierzon, Bourges, Clermont-Ferrand, the A75 to Issoire, St. Flour and onto
Marvejols. Groups staying in the village of Les Vignes leave the motorway at Severac le Chateau via le
Massegros to le Vignes. Groups in all other villages continue on the A75 toward Millau, but leaving
the motorway at Aguessac to Riviere-sur-Tarn, Boyne, Le Rozier and Peyreleau. Arriving in resort
early afternoon on day 2.
Return journey overland
For the return journey it is much the same, departing on the second last day in the afternoon then
continuing to Calais and taking an early morning ferry to Dover and onwards to your drop off point.
On the day before departure, the local JEKA team will deliver provisions for your packed lunches for
the journey home.
The exact itinerary regarding times and route will be forwarded to you one month before departure
in your final travel pack. JEKA reserve the right to revise routes and journey times given below, the
following is a guide to help you plan your trip.
Overland travel is always subject to there being a minimum number of 40 passengers on any
departure.
Duration
The journey time from Calais to the Gorges du Tarn takes around 16 hours depending on the
weather,traffic conditions and the number and length of comfort stops en route. The time of
departure from your home town will depend on your UK location.
Stops
We make regular stops to comply with EC driving regulations at motorway service areas which all
have toilet facilities and somewhere we you can food, drinks or snacks. Please ensure you take
enough euros for any drinks or snacks en route, some services also make a nominal charge for their
toilet facilities.

We ask that you are at your meeting point 30 minutes before the stated departure time.
You may eat on the coach, but chewing gum is NOT allowed
No smoking on the coach, regular stops are made on the journey
Plastic bags will be placed on the armrest of most seats so please help the drivers keep the coach
tidy by emptying these during stops.
f Boxes and other items must not be placed in the aisle of the coach for obvious safety reasons

choice and volume of music and dvd’s etc.

Luggage (travelling overland)
There is strictly only 1 suitcase or backpack allowed per person and weighing a maximum of 20 kg
and 1 piece of hand baggage (20 x 30 x 30 cm) – which should contain everything you need for the
journey and ideally will double up as your day rucksack throughout your camp. A sleeping bag can be
carried in a separate bag but please do not attach to the outside of the case or backpack as this
makes it difficult for loading in the hold of the coach.
For every 20 coach passengers there is allowed 1 piece of group luggage (max size 100x55x44 cm.)
and weighing no more than 25kg. Baggage in excess of this amount will be refused. Please divide the
group luggage as much as possible between the individual luggage.
We provide different coloured luggage labels so in the case of two or more groups sharing the coach,
each group will have a different colour. This makes it easy for drivers to distinguish which luggage
belongs to which group, so please use these labels to mark your luggage clearly with the owner’s
name and address as well as the JEKA administration number allocated to your group.
Please designate a member of the group to be responsible to see that all luggage is loaded on the
coach both for the outward and return journeys. Neither JEKA nor the coach drivers can be held
responsible for luggage that is left behind.
All groups must supply their own: Bed Linen (1 sheet, a single duvet cover and pillowcase per person should cover any
eventuality – you will be provided with either blankets or a duvet and a pillow at your
chalet)

travelling group members, including all staff and even children under 2 years with name,
address, telephone number and date of birth of each member. Please have at least 3 copies
of the group list with house as you will need one to hand over with your tourist tax, one
copy to the local JEKA representative and at least a spare copy for your own reference.

ACCOMMODATION
What can you expect from your Jeka house? And what is expected from you JEKA during the stay?

Your house
Our lodgings are located in the Gorges du Tarn, about 20 km from Millau. In
the region between Boyne and Les Baumes Basses, always near the river
Tarn, Jeka has a number of houses, specially equipped for groups.
The houses are built in the Mediterranean style according to the building
regulations in the park. Some houses will have a tent with stone or wood
floor and interior lighting, which is used as an extra bedroom.
Each accommodation centre has a number of dormitories equipped with bunk beds,
sufficient modern sanitary facilities, a furnished kitchen and a dining/recreation room. The
kitchen is equipped with all cooking ustensils necessary for preparing JEKA’s carefully
composed menu. So, you don’t need to bring any kitchenware or cooking utensils. However,
electrical appliances are not supplied. If you want to use a kettle, mixer or a coffee machine,
you will need to bring it with you
In your JEKA-accommodation you will find a cleaning kit including washing-up liquid to keep
your house clean and tidy. JEKA also supplies toilet paper. If you require additional supplies
at any time, just ask our representative. You will need to take tea towels and dishcloths with
you from home.
Our accommodation is comfortable but simply-furnished so the team spirit is really
important. That’s also the reason why there is no television, radio or telephone available in
the accommodation. However, you can always be reached in case of emergency via our local
JEKA office and there is always public telephone box in your neighbourhood. Mobile phone
signals tend not to be too strong due to the height of the rocks.
In each Jeka house you will find large posters showing the house and fire regulations. Apart
from a list of emergency phone numbers you will, among other things, also find a floor plan
of the building and the room layout. The room layout is a copy of the plan as you will have
been forwarded by Jeka when confirming your house allocation.
Remark: No pets are allowed in Jeka houses !

Fire Safety
Even though the necessary safety precautions are undertaken, our centres still contain some
combustible materials.
Therefore we urge you to be very careful in the kitchen, not to smoke in the dormitories or near gas
bottles.
Check how to use the fire extinguishers and practise a fire drill in case of emergency, noting
the nearest exits etc. Please be aware that you may be asked by the local authorities to
submit a list of all group members and they may ask for a breakdown of your emergency
procedures.
Key
For each of the houses in France there is a key available
to the group leader. We do ask for a deposit of € 10
payable to your local Jeka rep.
Noise Pollution
We strongly urge groups to be considerate of the local residents, often these are tourists who
have come to the Gorges du Tarn for nature and tranquility. Noise pollution is unacceptable,
reduce noise e.g. by closing the windows ... in the afternoon a lot of people take their siesta,
plese keep this in mind! We ask in particular that groups are quiet between the hours of
10pm and 8am.

The upkeep of your
accommodation
JEKA must stress the utmost importance that the departing groups leave their accommodation
centre in a good clean condition. Every incoming group has the right to arrive in a clean and
tidy centre.
What we expect from you BEFORE YOUR DEPARTURE:
- clean the floors,
- clean all furniture, especially all tables and chairs,
- check all beds for damage that you can possibly repair yourself.
Make sure that all mattresses and pillows have a JEKA-cover,
- The evening before your departure switch both the refrigerator and the freezer on “defrost”, clean
them after they have been defrosted and switch them on again (before applying this procedure
first ask our JEKA-representative what to do with any leftover food),
- clean the gasfires thoroughly, without forgetting the steel frame and base structure,
- do not leave leftover food in places not reserved to store them,
- wash all cooking and kitchenware thoroughly,
- clean all toilets and showers thoroughly,
- Tidy the area surrounding your centre by collecting all rubbish in bags which you tie together
tightly and leave at the agreed spot.
It is strictly forbidden to take mattresses, JEKA-blankets, -pillows or -furniture out of the
dormitories or use them outdoors.
Groups staying in two different centres who need to take kitchenware from one house to
the other one, are kindly reminded to return these to their original location.
Any possible damage to furniture or kitchenware must be reported to our representative
before your departure. The claim will be settled by mutual agreement.
It’s the responsibility of every group leader that the above conditions are observed.
Any costs incurred from repairs and/or cleaning as a result of not following the above
conditions, will be claimed back directly or after your stay!

Service in resort
Jeka will do all they can to make your stay as smooth as possible. Here we give a brief
explanation of how our local staff can help with advice and assistance where needed and
how the delivery system works.
Your local jeka team
Jeka guarantees you a permanent on-site service, provided by voluntary
representatives who speak your language and who are available 7 days a
week for information, provision of services and emergencies. You can
contact them for information in connection with coach trips, walks, activity
planning and with practical matters. During your stay you will be assigned a
rep to make sure everything goes smoothly. Upon request the organizers of
activities will accompany the JEKA employees when they visit you. Details
about the activities can be discussed. You may also take this opportunity to
pay those activities immediately. For local coach hire Jeka will take payment
on behalf of the coach prior to the excursion, a receipt will be provided.
Food provisions
JEKA delivers ALL FOOD SUPPLIES you may need during your stay, for excursions and the
return journey. We provide two cold meals and one main hot meal per day. The quantities
are generous; the food is of a high quality, variable and can be easily used for packed lunches.
Upon arrival you will find in your host the first supply of the basic ingredients (potatoes,
butter, milk, sugar, etc ...) and supplies for the first few days.
Every morning the local baker delivers fresh BAGUETTES, ordered by JEKA. The quantity is
based on typical group consumption for 2 cold lunches with sandwich fillings a day. Don’t
forget to inform your rep a minimum 24 hours in advance, when you want to do a two-day
trip, so that the bread can be ordered in advancefor 2 days. All agreements concerning the
quantity, delivery point and time of the bread supplies need to be made with the JEKArepresentative, not directly with the baker. Only then we can check and guarantee you a
good service.
We use many FRESH products for dinner, but a number of dishes are also prepared and
delivered deep-frozen, to save on cooking time. These dishes are already prepared with
sauces and are portioned. First defrost (in the fridge!) and then they take just half an hour in
the oven and that’s all. The ovens are always large enough to be able to warm up everything
at the same time.
Obviously there is no obligation to follow the menu strictly: JEKA always delivers the food for
3 days at a time, so for those 3 days the food can be used in whichever order you prefer.
Rearrangements over the next delivery days are not possible: Jeka cannot supply products
earlier than when they are delivered to the agency by the wholesalers. This menu has been
put together taking into account when the various supplies are available so please bear this
in mind when planning your meals.

Delivery
Inform your JEKA representative immediately if the delivered quantity is too small or too
large. The delivery will be adapted to the actual needs of your group after consultation, we
would ask that you use the products correctly and NEVER allow unwanted foodstuffs to go
to waste, if you will not make use of it then certainly we will find somebody who can! Please
do not take any of the supplies from the house when leaving. The first delivery for the next
group will be supplied during the last day of your stay – please do do use any products from
this delivery!
Gas cylinders
You will find two gas cylinders in or next to the kitchen on your arrival. One bottle is already
connected, the other is a reserve cylinder.
INFORM YOUR REPRESENTATIVE WHENEVER YOU CONNECT THE SPARE BOTTLE, SO THEY
CAN ORDER A NEW ONE IN TIME.
Vegetarians and diets
Where possible we will help with special diets in particular for vegetarians, gluten-free and
severe allergies, provided that the relevant information is included on your group list where
requested.
In our experience it can be difficult to obtain alternative products from local stores, in some
cases we will be limited to simply supplying additional supplies of suitable products from the
menu to cover the items which are not appropriate. We would suggest that participants
following a special diet should also bring some of their own food items from home.
