The Southern Northwest Territories differs geographically, biologically, and
historically from the northern regions. The area was home to the Dene People
thousands of years ago before the Europeans arrived prospecting for gold. There
are three main communities in the southern regions including: Fort Smith, known
as the “Garden Capital” of the NWT, as the climate is much more temperate than the north side of Great Slave Lake and is the gateway to
Wood Buffalo National Park; Hay River, nicknamed “The Hub” for its role as the distribution centre for the Territory; and Yellowknife, the
capital, now known as the “Diamond Capital of North America”. Enjoy the unique natural beauty of the area with terrific opportunities

falls it turns sharply to the right and flows down into a wide curved three-step
