Matthew Erzar
Head Coach
Matthew Erzar will enter the 2014 season as the Norsemen’s new Head Baseball Coach. For the past
three seasons he has been the assistant coach for the Norsemen, under long time Head Coach Brad
Scott. As Coach Scott’s assistant he assisted with all aspects of the program and served as the team’s
pitching coach. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, he is an instructor in Physical Education
and Health courses at Mesabi Range.
Prior to his time with the Norsemen, Matthew served as assistant coach at Concordia College in 2010,
University of Minnesota, Crookston from 2008-2009, and North Dakota State University in 2007. As
an assistant at Concordia College, he coached catchers and infielders. At UMC, Matthew was the top
assistant and the pitching coach. He also designed and ran the strength and conditioning program. At
NDSU, he served as a volunteer graduate assistant coach.
During the summers, Matthew has worked at many levels of baseball. His most recent
summer coaching stint was with the Mohawk Valley (NY) DiamondDawgs of the
Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League. In 2010, he coached at the professional
level with the Northern League Champions, Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. With
the RedHawks, Matthew coached first base and worked with the bullpen. He
coached two years in the Northwoods League, a collegiate summer league, with
the Battle Creek (MI) Bombers and Thunder Bay (ON) Border Cats. Both years
he served as the pitching coach. Matthew also has coached for the Fargo (ND)
Post 2 legion team and many youth teams in the Grand Rapids (MN) area.
A native of Grand Rapids, MN, Matthew played at North Dakota State University.
As a Bison, Matthew was a four year letter winner as a pitcher and he helped
win a North Central Conference title in 2004. Matthew graduated from NDSU
with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration in 2005 and a Master’s in Health,
Nutrition, and Exercise Science in 2007.

Texas Rangers
Former Mesabi Range pitcher Mark Hamburger has been
promoted to the Texas Rangers. Hamburger a free agent signee of
the Minnesota Twins was traded to the Rangers organization in
2008. This season, Mark has been at the Double-A and Triple-A
levels. He was 8-4 in 82.1 innings with 3.39 ERA, 70 K, 25BB, and
an OBA of .217 at both levels before being called up.

Mesabi Range at a Glance
Degrees & Programs at Mesabi Range : AA degrees cover the first two years of most programs for transfer
to four-year institutions. AAS degrees are two-year career programs designed for immediate employment.
Certificate and diploma programs are one or two-year career programs designed for immediate employment in
areas such as Industrial Mechanical Technology, Carpentry, Paramedic, Executive Office Management, Practical
Nursing, Human Services, and more!
Student Body: Enrollment - 1,100 Student/Faculty Ratio - 24 to 1
The majority of Mesabi Range students come from local community high schools Virginia, Eveleth, and Mesabi
East. Liberal arts is the most popular major, followed by Industrial Mechanical Technology.
Scholarships: $100,000 in scholarships awarded annually through the Mesabi Range Foundation.
Financial Aid: About 80% of dependent students received aid last year. Awards vary with an average of $3,600.
Student Services: disability services, counseling, academic advising, learning center, tutoring, student support
services, on-line advising, and minority services.
Location: Campuses in Virginia and Eveleth Minnesota. Mesabi Range is one-half hour from Giant’s Ridge Golf
& Ski Resort in the heart of Northeastern Minnesota.
On-Campus Housing: The Alpine Village is apartment-style furnished units located on the Virginia campus.
Activities: bar-b-ques, campus-wide social activities, career program clubs, homecoming, intramural athletics,
Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, student senate, theater, vocal and instrumental music.
