If you missed our Gathering last month you missed out on a good time. Rosalie once again came up with
a very fun and stress relieving game for all of us to play. It was good to see Buzz & Missy and also Willie.
He’s been able to make it to our past couple of Gatherings. We haven’t seen Billy & Jo, Green & Lois or
Donna Payne for a few months. We miss seeing each of you and hope you will soon be back at our
Gathering.
On Saturday September 3, 2016 Michael & I rode to Salyersville, KY for the KY-T Bike Show held in
conjunction with the Founder’s Day. There were 10 Bikes/Trikes which isn’t bad considering this was
the first time for this Bike Show. All of us also rode in the Parade and threw candy to the little ones.
Afterwards 10 of us went to the Knucklehead Grill and had Dinner. The food was delicious and it was
good seeing our friends from Kentucky that Michael & I had not seen for quite a while.
Tuesday September 20 while I was being Ambassador here at the VA Medical Center Charlie Carroll
stopped to talk to me and told me that he wished he had never sold his Trike. Also Green Stewart
stopped by to say Hello.
Thursday September 22, 2016 Michael & I and Barry & Joyce started out our day by having Breakfast at
Waffle House @8am and then began our trip to Wings Over the Smokie’s. We stopped at a Rest Area
and had a Picnic Lunch. We arrived at the Rally @3:30pm or so and picked up our packets and of course
ordered shirts. Then we stopped at Burger King in Cherokee and had Dinner. We then proceeded back
over the Mountain to find our Cabin. It was called “The Hideaway”. And it was hidden alright. Michael
& I had never been there before. Barry missed the turn so we were on a path that wasn’t even for 4
Wheelers. Barry & Joyce made it to the top of the Mountain. However, our Trike bogged down
approximately half way and STOPPED. I immediately unplugged my Helmet and dismounted. Then I
proceeded to unstrap the Cooler to take some of the load off of “Our Fireball.” I have never been so
frightened in all of my life. It was dark. No Cell Phone Service and we had no idea where were going.
Barry & Joyce realized this was the wrong road and managed to get back down to us. Our Trailer was
sideways. Each of our Trailers and Coolers were loaded with Clothes, Food, Drinks and Snacks. Michael
and Barry unhooked our Trailer from the Trike. Then I stood on the edge of the Ravine so that Michael
could get the Trike turned around. Once he was heading down the Mountain then Michael and Barry
hooked the Trailer back to our Trike. I refused to get back on the Trike. Joyce & I began our walk down
the Mountain. I kept my Helmet on and it was strapped. Because if I fell I was not going to hurt my
head, I may break my leg or arm but my head was going to be protected. Joyce said she was going to
walk with me. I was a little ahead of her and I saw a foot long little snake. I was shaking I was so
nervous and praying the whole way that God would watch over all of us and help us find our way to the
Cabin.
We managed to get off that Mountain and to find the Cabin. The Bra on Barry & Joyces Trailer was tore
from bottoming out on the rough dirt and jagged rocks. The Belly Pan on Our Fireball was torn opened
as if with a Can Opener. And even though we were at a Rally no Vendor would jack it up and look
underneath our Trike. It’s all about the money. We wanted to know how much damage was done.
Friday September 23, 2016 we had to be back over at the Rally @9am because Michael and Barry each
were having Safety Chrome added to the Trikes. Joyce and I helped a man that fell while walking in
between the Vendor Tents. Joyce told him not to move and I hurried and got him some ice water and
also a bag of ice to place on the knot on his head. After that we looked around at all of the Vendors at
the Rally and after the Trikes were done we then went to Food Lion and bought Hot Dogs along with all
the fixins to cook on the Grill. We then headed back over the Mountain to the Cabin. By the way the
Cabin was beautiful but the gravel road was not meant for our Trikes. Michael & I fixed the Hot Dogs on
the Grill and I fixed the Baked Beans and the Sauce on the Stove.
Saturday September 24, 2016 we had Michael and Barry drop us off at the shops there in Cherokee and
they went over to the Rally. Joyce and I shopped and had a Funnel Cake and then walked over to the
Rally. By then it was time to check our Door Prize Tickets and also Lunch Time. The food Vendors there
at the Rally had really good food. Then we watched the Georgia, Florida and North Carolina Drill Teams
performance. They were great as usual. Afterwards we decided to have Dinner at Granny’s. There was
good country cooking at this Restaurant and it was all the food you could eat. We then headed back to
the Cabin one last time. We even got to watch Marshall get beat by Louisville. The Cabin had Direct TV
but no Cell Phone Service or Internet. We packed most of our clothes so all we had to do in the morning
was load everything.
While at Wings Over the Smokies we saw our friends Buzz & Missy, Angie, Bill & Beth Ann, Rich & Cindy
with Niehaus, Ken & Judy, David with Freedom’s Choice, the Vanderhoof’s and Curt & Denise Yates from
Kentucky, the Hamilton’s from Tennessee, Roger Gay and Mike Beal from Ohio.
Sunday September 25, 2016 we got up @7:00am and began getting everything together and began
loading everything back into the Trailers. We departed “The Hideaway” for the last time. We rode to
Maggie Valley and had Breakfast at Country Vittles. We were on the road heading home by 8:45am or
so. When we ride we take our time. We make Pit Stops, stop for Gas, stopped and had a Picnic Lunch @
noon and stopped a couple of times simply because we were tired and getting overheated. Michael
soaked a Cool Collar in ice and water and Joyce put it around her Neck and it really helped her. We
made it home safely.
We changed clothes once arriving home and then began unloading the Trike and Trailer. Once we got
that done then we decided to go to The Cookout for Dinner. We had Dinner there but got Milk Shakes
to go. We even brought Hope a cup of Vanilla Ice Cream Home for her.
By the way at our last Gathering it was decided that we would have our Christmas Party at Barry &
Joyce’s House on Saturday December 10, 2016. We were thinking about having Pizza & Chips and
everyone could bring a Dessert if they wanted to. But if anyone has any other ideas please let us know.
Also the Virginia Rally will be held in Roanoke, VA at the Holiday Inn Tanglewood Thursday October 6
thru Saturday October 8, 2016 if anyone is interested. And the Region Fall finale last but not least will
be held in Johnson City, TN at the Holiday Inn Friday November 4 thru Saturday November 5, 2016

Road Rage

On a recent ride through the Black Range I encountered "road rage." We had just come over
Emory Pass, and it was a nice day for ride. It was deer season, and we had come across several
hunters on the way. I was leading when a pick-up truck pulled onto the road in front of me. I saw
the truck as it started to pull out into traffic so I slowed to let it in. I got suspicious right away
because the driver took his time and acted like we weren’t even there. I kept a close eye on them.
There was a little girl and an older man in the back. The man kept waving and doing things I
didn’t like, so when I got the chance I decided to pass them and put some space between the
pick-up and myself. When I looked into my rearview mirrors to see if it was okay to get back
into the right lane, I noticed that they must of sped up. Right way I knew this was going to be
trouble. After I got into the right lane, the pick-up pulled out to pass me. When they got even
with me, I gently applied the brakes. This let them move in front of me faster then they expected
to and put more space between them and me. After that, I saw a beer can come out of the driver’s
side. I decided the best thing to do is slow down even more. Finally, they went on down the road
and nothing more came of it. Things could have gotten out of hand if I hadn’t kept cool and just
let them go. We have all had our experiences with it in one way or another. It might have been
someone reacting to your headlight modulator. I have had them get upset with me over that.
According to the American Automobile Association, road rage has been increasing by 7% per
year since 1990. An Australian study estimates that about half of all traffic accidents in Australia
may be due to road rage. A study by Lex Research in the U.K. indicates that of Britain's some
2.8 million company car drivers, about 83% have been victims of some form of road rage during
their working life. About 21% reported having been run off the road and 18% have been
physically threatened by another driver!
Some attribute the rise in rage incidents to the recession and social and economic frustration.
Gary Fite, Public Relations Manager for the Royal Automobile Club of Queensland, reckons that
in many cases the cause of the anger that touches off rage incidents is bad driving. With an
estimated 1,800 reported incidents of violent road behavior in the U.S. in 1996, it's a situation to
be taken seriously. The incidents that trigger a Mad Max syndrome in the average driver are
usually simple matters of discourtesy—for example, loud music, over-use of the horn, tailgating
and changing lanes without signaling. These, of course, are usually just the trigger points. The
actual causes can be traced back to all forms of stress, from being called into the boss's office for
a friendly 'chat', to having just been dumped by your girlfriend. Pretty much, road warriors are
the result of a flashpoint of all the accumulated stresses in one's life.
A 1995 study performed by the Road Safety Unit of the Automobile Association of Great Britain
found that 90 % of the drivers surveyed had experienced "road rage" incidents during the
preceding 12 months. In this study, 60 % of drivers admitted to losing their tempers behind the
wheel during the previous year, and 1% claimed another motorist had physically assaulted them.
In early 1996, the AAA Potomac club commissioned a study from The Gallup Organization to
investigate driver concerns. The study found that Washington area motorists felt more threatened
by aggressive drivers than by drunk drivers; 40 % of the respondents said that aggressive drivers
"most endanger highway safety," while 33 % identified drunk drivers as the primary risk. As for
avoiding the Mad Max syndrome, here are a few tips from Dr Ricardo Martinez, Administrator
of the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, to help you through your journey:






Don’t take traffic problems personally
Avoid eye contact with an aggressive driver
Don’t make obscene gestures ("that makes you a player and suddenly it begins to escalate")
Don’t tailgate
Use your horn sparingly (the polite honk can be misinterpreted)
Don’t block the passing lane (some drivers think you're doing something to them when you do
this) don't block the right hand turn lane
