Healthy Borders Intercept Surveys 2011
Specific Aims
1. To assess the impact of the border crossing experience and border delays among pedestrians
who cross the San Ysidro, CA, port of entry and to evaluate the frequency and purpose of their
crossings.
2. Follow up to a pedestrian survey conducted by San Diego’s Regional Planning Agency, SANDAG,
in 2004-2005.
Research Design and Methods
Dataset
One-hundred and sixty seven intercept surveys were administered following verbal consent at the U.S.Mexico border at San Ysidro from northbound pedestrian commuters. Nineteen surveys were excluded
leaving a total of 148 surveys for analysis; 17 due to incomplete data collection and 2 due to country of
origin being other than U.S. or Mexico as this was later decided to be a small sample size for
comparison. Surveys were divided into three main sections: Personal Data, Border Crossing Experience
at San Ysidro Only, and Additional Questions Regarding the San Ysidro Border. Surveys were conducted
between May 13th, 2010 and August 2nd, 2010. Inclusion criteria included being over 18 years of age and
willing to verbally consent to participate.
Ten of the 31 questions originated from the SANDAG English main version survey and include SC1,Q2,
Q3, Q4, Q5, Q6, Q7, Q19, D1, and D2 (SANDAG, 2006). Survey raw data from SANDAG was kindly
provided for comparative purposes. SANDAG surveys included surveys collected from San Ysidro,
Tecate, and Otay port of entries for a total of 3,754 surveys. Of these, 2,742 surveys were completed at
the San Ysidro port of entry and were selected to be used for comparison. SANDAG collected surveys
from pedestrians, bus passengers, and passenger vehicles (figure 14); as a result, certain questions were
compared to SANDAG surveys collected only from pedestrians to prevent bias (figure 15b, 15d, 15f).
Occupational groups were taken from the EEO Occupational Groups and Titles for the Census 2000
Special EEO Tabulation (U.S. Census Bureau, 2000). Examples of each occupational group were provided
to participants for accurate classification.
Statistical Methods
SPSS v.19 software (IBM Company, Chicago, IL) was used for descriptive and inferential statistics.
Graphical exploratory data analysis was performed to evaluate border crossing experience, border
delays, frequency, and purpose of border crossings while controlling for residence. Chi square goodness
to fit was used for categorical comparison between selected questions from SANDAG and Healthy
Borders surveys.

APPENDIX B. Intercept Interview Verbal Consent Script
“You are eligible to participant in our study of the border environment. Now I would like to take a few
minutes to explain the study to you. After that I will ask you if you have questions. After answering all
your questions, I will ask you if you would like to participate. You are free to participate or not. Do I have
your permission to explain the study?”
If yes → Explain the Purpose of the Study:
We want to find out how people in San Ysidro perceive environmental health
issues and the San Ysidro/Tijuana pedestrian border crossing. This will help us
understand the thoughts of the community, which could be used to inform the
planning of the pedestrian portion of the border crossing.
→ Explain the Description of the Study:
If you agree to be in this study you will be asked to fill out a questionnaire.
Questions will include things like your perceptions and views about the U.S.Mexico border at San Ysidro regarding topics such as air quality and safety.
If no → Thank the person for his/her time.
“Now that you understand the study, would you like to participate in our study?
If yes → Verbal agreement has been obtained. Continue on with the questionnaire.
If no → Thank the person for his/her time.
ONCE THE QUESTIONNAIRE HAS BEEN COMPLETED
“You have now completed the questionnaire. We would like to offer you a $5 coupon to Subway for
your time. Thank you for your participation.”
Page 40 of 56
