November 2015 THE MAVERICK TIMES A STUDENT NEWSLETTER CREATED FOR STUDENTS BY STUDENTS... Bradley Middle School 13345 Beatties Ford Road (980)-343-5750 No one can make you feel inferior without your consent - Eleanor Roosevelt Upcoming Bradley Events: By Seth K. Q. Why did the judge send the turtle to jail? A. Because he was known as a hard case! Q: What is the longest word in the dictionary? Thanksgiving Break 11/25-11/27 A: Smiles, because there is a mile between each “S” EighthGradeAssistant Principal-”MS.WOOD” Ayla, Ashley, and Amber had the amazing opportunity to interview our Assistant Principal, Ms. Wood, who has a had a fulilling career in Education. Ms. Wood’s educational path has led her to many roles in Education: a Math Coordinator, Facilitator, Assistant Principal, and a classroom teacher for grades 3-8. That’s a lot to cover in thirty years! She was asked to come to Bradley Middle ive years ago, and said yes, thankfully! She likes our school because it represents the “realworld.” “We have a diverse population of plain old kids. No trouble makers--good kids.” according to Ms. Wood. Since Ms. Wood is retiring at the end of this year, we asked some questions that would help out the newcomers to our school. For the new students and even new teachers/staff she suggests, “Remember Bradley has a good reputation so always do wonderful things.” Especially for the new staff this year, she says to “be tough, fair, and be a team player.” This could be very useful advice for someone new to take over as Assistant Principal next year. After all, this is a very important job that has high expectations. Outside of school, Ms. Wood likes to read, play online computer games, and travel. Her favorite things to read are Murder Mysteries and John Gresham’s books. When she listens to music, she tends to enjoy everything except rap and country. Her favorite band is “Boston”, which is something most students wouldn't know about at this school. Whenever she goes out to eat with her husband, she goes to a sushi place located in Charlotte called Ru San’s. Sadly, with Ms. Wood retiring this year, and she will be dearly missed. She has been a wonderful asset to our school community! Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate the meaning of being thankful! The point of Thanksgiving is to be thankful for the things that you do have. For example: if you have a big family that cares for you, you should be thankful, because many people in this world don’t have a family to care for them at all. So that’s why on Thanksgiving people celebrate with their family by having a big huge festival. Other people believe that Thanksgiving is a time when friends and family get together and have a big dinner to eat together and show that they are thankful for one other through the good times and bad. Thanksgiving is a time to be happy and eat all the delicious food that your family made and have fun! It's a good time to see everyone, especially if you have family that live in another town, state, or even country! By: Elijah S. It all started in Britain, where the people were being unfairly treated by King James of England. King James didn't like the people of England to practice different religions. The separatist then moved to Holland but the conditions there were the same. Then, in 1619 a deal was struck in London for a new England colony. They packed 102 people on the Mayflower, seeking freedom of religion, work, and better lives. The colonist had a 9 week 3 day trip ahead of them, sadly 2 died, but 1 was born. They reached land in November of 1620. They stole food from the natives and lived on their boat. As winter came only half of them survived. The survivors were able to conduct peace treaties with neighboring Native American tribes. The first Thanksgiving in 1621 was a three day festival. It was full of eating, hunting, and entertainment. It was a time to celebrate the first successful harvest of the Plymouth and Native Americans. The Indians killed five deer as gifts for the colonist. They actually didn't have turkey. It wasn't until 1789 when our first president George Washington set the Thanksgiving national holiday. Maverick Fun Facts By: Dora K.
