What Technology To Buy?
 Upgraded Servers (consolidation a big consideration)
 Security and Data Protection Products and Services
 DASD, NAS, SAN Hard Drive Storage
 Flash Drives – 35% preferred hard drives because of
capacity and cost.
 Clearly, in December 2006 respondents had a wait
and see attitude concerning spending money on Vista
and Office 2007.
 The numbers released from Microsoft seem to reflect
that buyers of technology are not rushing to adopt as
they did with Office 97 or Windows XP.
CIO Magazine TechPoll 12/29/06
 IT spending projections decreased in the last
quarter of 2006, with CIOs (Chief Information
Officers) predicting spending increases of just 5.8
percent over the next 12 months.
 According to the survey, almost two-thirds of
CIOs surveyed (63.6 percent) have no plans to
invest in Microsoft Office 2007 or Vista Operating
System in the next year.
 They do plan to invest in…
CIO Survey
2000 CIOs, and 3000 Other ―Readers‖
 Computer hardware is the top spending priority
among CIOs surveyed for the poll, with 55.8
percent of CIOs planning to increase spending in
that area, compared with 46.9 percent in
September. Only 11.7 percent plan to decrease
spending in the year ahead, compared with 16.3 in
September. Storage systems and security software
other areas where CIOs expect to spend more
money in the coming year.

Intel Updates Chips, Platform for 2007
 April 17, 2007 Intel outlined its processor,
platform and chipset deliverables for 2007 and
2008, including its updated mobile platform,
"Bear Lake" desktop chipset and upcoming
"Penryn" Core 2 processors, the first products
developed using 45-nanometer technology.
Intel Updates Chips, Platform for 2007
 Based on a 45nm quad-core desktop processor
operating at 3.33 Ghz users will enjoy a 15%
improvement for imaging applications, a 25%
improvement for 3-D rendering applications
(such as Windows Vista) and a more than 40%
boost for gaming and video encoding applications,
according to Intel.
The Future for Intel
 Intel plans to develop teraflop products based on
its Project Larrabee platform, a highly parallel IAbased architecture that's easily programmable and
will scale to trillions of floating point operations
(teraflops) per second.
 As part of Larrabee, Intel will incorporate
enhancements to accelerate the performance of
scientific, data mining, visualization, analytics
and other highly computing-intensive
applications.
 Most likely see in late 2008 or early 2009
Intel Updates Chips, Platform for 2007
 By May 2007 Intel will launch its "Santa Rosa"
Centrino mobile platform and extend its mobile
technology to smaller, more power-efficient PCs.
 The "Santa Rosa on Desktop" processors will
provide integrated 802.11n wireless support and
optional Intel Turbo Memory for application
acceleration.
Intel Updates Chips, Platform for 2007
 Intel's first set of "Penryn" Xeon server
processors, also based on the 45nm Hi-K
technology are due to begin shipping in 2007
 Aimed at high-performance computing and
workstation applications.
 According to Intel, the new Xeons will deliver a
45% increase in performance for high-bandwidth
applications and a 25% boost for Java-based
servers.

What Is Virtual Server?
Virtual Server (VS) is a server application based on
the Microsoft Windows® operating system, or other
native operating system such as UNIX
VS enables users to run a broad range of operating
systems—including Microsoft Windows Server™
2003 and Microsoft Windows 2000 Server—
simultaneously on a single physical server.

systems and related applications.
A virtual machine uses software and selected
hardware devices to create an emulated
operating environment.

Data Storage & Replication
 Virtual Servers Run Real Servers Running Real
Applications Which Access Data From SAN (Or
Other Storage Devices, but SAN Is Best.)
 The SAN May Be Replicated To A Remote SAN
 These SAN Devices Synchronize Several Times a
Day, Or Even In Real Time.
 Note; Some Distance Limits Apply.

Add Virtual Appliances
 A virtual appliance is a pre-built, pre-configured
and ready-to-run software application packaged
with the operating system inside a virtual
machine. www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/
 Virtual appliances are fundamentally changing
the application stack and how it is packaged and
distributed ISVs develop self-contained and
optimized application stacks that are easy to
deploy, run on any hardware, and are more secure
and reliable.

Dissention In Virtual Reality
 From the Washington Post 2:44a CT 3/30/07
 PARIS - In a battle between push guns and pig grenades,
the exploding pigs won.
 The clash started on a January morning when protesters
attacked the cyberspace headquarters of extremist French
presidential candidate Jean-Marie Le Pen in the popular
3D Internet fantasy world SecondLife.
Dissention In Virtual Reality
 Le Pen security forces responded with push guns,
whimsical digital weapons that tossed bodies
through the air "like rag dolls," according to one
witness. Protesters fought back with pig grenades,
firing fat pink porkers that exploded in neon pink
splatters. When the shooting ended, Le Pen‗s
headquarters lay in ruins, deserted by staff and
guards.
 Don‘t Laugh – U.S. Candidates Have Already
Begun Developing Their Virtual Headquarters!!!

 Booming virtual economies in online worlds such as
Second Life and World of Warcraft have drawn the
attention of a U.S. congressional committee, which is
investigating how virtual assets and incomes should be
taxed.
 The increasing size and public profile of virtual
economies, the largest of which have millions of users
and gross domestic products that rival those of small
countries, have made them increasingly difficult for
lawmakers and regulators to ignore.
 There are Millionaires in SecondLife too!
