wireframe [will] work workshop
university of applied arts vienna (2003-2004):
Architectural criterias:
- create a new space for the university´s courtyard.
- Define it´s use
Geometrical criterias:
- design a surface with an overall size of 144 m²
- create a freeformed nurbs - surface
Structural criterias:
- find a skeletal spatial structure
- use reinforcement steel for material

thin concrete shells and their
reinforcement
in 1925 the Zeiss planetarium jena is one of the first
thin concrete shells, with a diameter of 25m.
The reinforcement
mesh was based on a
icosahedron, that
inspired buckminster
fuller 20 years later
for his geodesic
domes.

thin concrete shells seem to have
disappeared over the last decades
Reasons are:
- labour intensive and costly process of construction of the
Wooden formwork
- costly pre-bending of the reinforcement steel
- increasing ease in analysing complex skeletal spatial structures
offered by advances in computer technology
-> concrete shells are less competitive than they were
a few decades ago.

3dimensional bend, our solution:
- elimination of the need for a large
temporary formwork in constructing
- new automation of the bending process
for reinforcement steel rods
pct - patent application pct/at05/000473

machines” (inventors: s. Brell-Cokcan, Dumene comploi )

Bending without segmentation
reinforcement steel to be bent in one piece
How to solve double curvature:
- plastic deformation in one direction (xZ)
- elastic deformation in the other xY
