June Messenger 2015 - Mount Olivet Church
A N EWSLETTER FOR M EMBERS & F RIENDS OF M OUNT O LIVET L UTHERAN C HURCH Believing, Belonging, Becoming JUNE 2015 VOLUME 3, ISSUE 6 Believing Share your faith and worship together this summer at Sunday and Wednesday services, Midweek Worship at the Conference & Retreat Center, and chapel services at COP. Details on pages 2, 5 & 8. 2 Belonging On May 11, we celebrated the completion of Phase I of our capital campaign. On page 14, see photos and learn about the project details. Mountain Top Experiences 14 Becoming Read about how getting involved at Cathedral of the Pines and church shapes our youth’s faith and relationships with each other. Pages 8 & 9. 8 On May 19, PASTOR underwent a planned exploratory surgery to determine the cause of pain in his throat. As a result of this surgery, it has been determined that he has an inoperable brain tumor. Read more on page 3. HOGENSON One of my favorite Bible verses is “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13) What this verse means to me is that when we are on the mountain top and things are going swimmingly, we can enjoy good times with even greater appreciation knowing that it is a gift from God. What it also means to me is that when we are going through challenging times we can get through them in a way we could not without faith. This summer 2000 kids will enter through the camp gates and discover a faith unlike any other. For some it will be a mountain top experience where they will grow in their faith and appreciate the many gifts from God. For others, it will provide respite, a relief from the dayto-day and a chance to escape the worries at home. More than 900 people will join us at the Conference & Retreat Center’s midweek worship services, surrounded by nature and the gifts God has given unto us. We will sing together and worship together, giving thanks for the beauty of the earth and the reminder that God is with us at all times – in all ways. I hope you are feeling strong and on top of the world. If so, celebrate that and say “thank you” to God. If you are not feeling strong, if you are not feeling on top of the world, remember that you are not alone. God is with you and there is heavenly help for you. Pastor John D. T H I N K I N G W I T H . . . PA S T O R H O G E N S O N BE NOT AFRAID I have a brain tumor. I don’t know any other way to say it. In the past several months, I have been experiencing pain when speaking – I saw a doctor, took the prescribed medication for my sore throat and then didn’t really think much about it. After the pain didn’t resolve, my doctors suggested comprehensive testing and an exploratory surgery to discern the cause. The cause was not what I hoped for. I have an inoperable brain tumor. As a pastor, I have walked through similar situations with families over the years and I have seen people go through tremendous challenges and adversity with a peace that shines through them. And, after nearly 30 years in ministry, I am convinced that this is the peace and comfort that only faith can bring. One of my favorite Bible verses is “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” (Philippians 4:13) and I am reminded and renewed that Christ is in us, at all times, in all ways, even when we don’t understand it. Over the past few weeks, Ruth and I have asked several questions – including “what if it’s …?” or “what should we do with this experience?” But I am so grateful that I have never, not once, asked “why me?” I am grateful for my faith. For those of you who are reading through the Bible, you probably look forward to the Psalms – “the center of the book,” our halfway point and the largest book in the Bible. And without spoiling it, Psalms is chock-full of questions – even the question “why me?” I want you to know, that’s okay. It’s okay to ask questions. It is okay to pray, even when you don’t have the words. God dwells in each one of us through our baptismal promise. God is not afraid of questions, because God is the answer. Questions and fear are two different things, but God is the answer to both. “Be not afraid” is mentioned in the Bible more than 365 times – that’s at least one for every day! In virtually every story we are reminded to trust in God and that God is with us at all times and in all ways. Let us continue to look upward, travel onward, and not be afraid. – PASTOR HOGENSON Pastor Hogenson Updates Ongoing updates on Pastor Hogenson’s condition can be found on his CaringBridge site at http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/pastorhogenson. For God so loved the world that he gave his only son that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. – JOHN 3:16 This has to be one of the best loved and known Bible verses. It has been called a love letter from God written in blood and given as a gift for all. We see John 3:16 written on signs in sporting arenas, we teach it to our children and we find comfort in those 24 words in this verse. Martin Luther called John 3:16 the miniature Gospel. In this verse alone one can sum up the entire Gospels and share it with others in a nonthreatening and powerful way. It is the one verse that has transformed my ministry and has given me purpose. I constantly use this verse at Men’s Breakfasts. I begin with, “For God so loved …” and I wait to have the men finish … “the world.” God did not send the gift of his son to a certain people or just to me and my friends, but God gave the gift of his son for all. Those 24 words define how I see the world and how I am called to share that gift of Christ to all. I invite you to mediate on these words and to look at the world with God’s eyes … love, flaws, and all. – PASTOR BAKKEN FOOD DRIVE Summer Music at Mount Olivet 6/7 6/14 6/21 6/28 7/5 7/12 7/19 7/26 8/2 8/9 8/16 8/23 8/30 9/6 MPLS @ 9, 10 & 11am Harriet Avenue Woodwind Quintet Gabriel Preisser, baritone Ian Snyder, violin Julie Johnson, flute Barbary Coast Dixieland Band Gustavus Alumni Choir Paul Scholtz, tenor Justin Staebell, baritone Amanda Jenkins, soprano Billy Johnson & Angie Gislason, vocal duet Christine Staebell, mezzo soprano Mark Bilyeu & Richard Owen, piano duets WEST @ 9 & 10am Anna Shevik, soprano Greg Dokken, baritone Paul Scholtz, tenor Ian Snyder, violin Diane Loudon, cello Billy Johnson & Angie Gislason, vocal duet Christine Staebell, mezzo soprano Genevieve Kalland, soprano Julie Johnson, flute Justin Staebell, baritone Aurora Double Reed Ensemble Amanda Jenkins, soprano Carah Hart, soprano Diane Loudon, cello Gavin Berg, piano Teresa Elsbernd, mezzo soprano PHOTOS: (1) Gabriel Preisser, baritone; performing in Stephen Sondheim’s “Putting It Together” at Skylark Opera in June. It’s for young men and women in their first four years out of high school – faithful young people who grew up serving in so many ways with energy, smiles, and laughter. Often, however, once they graduated, they weren’t sure exactly where they fit in anymore, and so ended up drifting away. I remember that exact feeling myself, coming home from Gustavus freshman year on that first Thanksgiving, walking through these doors of the church on Sunday morning, and wondering, “Where did all my friends go?” It made me feel kind of lost. And sad, because I always had loved being at church. Our group began by asking college students what they were looking for in church after graduation and how we could help. The bottom line was this: They didn’t really care what the activity was, they just wanted to stay connected. And so, one summer night last year, just before everyone headed off to near and far, we had our first gathering for 18- to 22-year-olds. It was a BBQ & Piñata Party. I was so nervous about whether or not they were having fun, and second guessing the Piñata idea, that I ran into the sacristy to pray for the Holy Spirit to be with us. “Please, Dear Lord! We need you NOW!” And when I went to go back outside, I discovered the group gathered up by the altar, the room lit only by candles and the eternal flame. They were just hanging out in a place that they grew up in – totally comfortable in God’s house. Zach from our youth department opened with prayer, then played all the church songs they know by heart. He sat there, quietly strumming his guitar and spontaneously sharing wisdom from his own experience of leaving home and going away to college. Soon others were sharing their advice with the 18-year-olds, too. They spoke about faith, friends, peer pressure, and choices that come with going off to school. It was such a heart-felt conversation that I just hid around the corner so as not to ruin the moment, filled with goose bumps and choking back tears knowing that God was in the house. Since then, we have gathered over school breaks in person for Bon Voyage Bonfires, Pizza & Hoops, Candlelit Worship Services, and BOGO Burritos at Chipotle. Online, we connect with people right where they are. We post devotionals and send bits of Mount Olivet love to support them UPCOMING A CT I V I TIES during a time of their lives filled with temptation and change. They know we are here for them, and now they are reaching back to us, privately, when they need someone to talk to confidentially, about life. This past weekend, as I sat watching the hockey tournament, each time I saw a Mount Olivet young adult on TV, I IM’d them on Facebook saying, “Hi! Pastor Monica here! I just saw you on TV!” And they IM’d back, “Cool! Awesome!” with lots of hearts and smiley faces. This is “church” reaching young adults where they’re at. The greatest affirmation that we are hanging on to the future leaders of our congregation came when we posted an invitation to our first-ever Hi-er League COP weekend. I was hoping and praying that we’d reach 100 or maybe even 200 college kids with that post. When my weekly Facebook report came back, it showed that 1,512 people connected to their church that week. 1,512! That weekend reunion at camp was the highlight of our summer, and undoubtedly the most Holy Spirit-filled weekend I’ve ever experienced at COP. From the moment they all hopped off the bus, pillows in hand – just like they’d been doing since they were in 3rd grade – and walked into the chapel, we just knew that this is what God wanted. Following everything that goes on that first year in college, they returned to that candle-lit chapel on the lake and opened to Kristi Youngdahl leading us, just like her father and grandfather had before her, in singing, “Sing when the day is bright, sing thru the darkest night.” In that moment, we all understood exactly who we were and always would be – beloved, forgiven, children of God. JUNE 2015 | 7 C A T H E D R A L O F T H E P I N E S C A M P A Letter to COP . . . Camp Dear Cathedral of the Pines, Evening Chapel Services at 7:30pm. Sunday Morning Worship at 10am. Thousands enter your gate each and every summer. They are either coming back to, or beginning the search for, a place that they can call their own. A place that they can belong by being exactly who they are. A place that is both serene and energetic at the same time. A place where they can develop their faith over many years as they transition from camper to Hi-Leaguer to volunteer. I recently contemplated what my life would be like without your stunning views, contagious laughter and unyielding acceptance. After thinking about it, I realized that my life would be lacking countless memories, long talks and lasting friendships; but I would survive because those things still exist elsewhere in the world. However, adding “unwavering faith” to your list of qualities is what distinguishes you from the rest. The faith one feels in your presence brings them strength because you exemplify grace and love day in and day out. I thank you for giving me an opportunity to be in that presence and a part of something so unique and special. There are not many places that one can go year after year and never feel that they have outgrown the experience. Growing up at COP, I heard countless tales from those who came before me and it is remarkable to think that even though years have passed, I am experiencing the same things. Not only has your schedule stayed the same, but you have continued to teach and develop campers into the people they are today. I know I wouldn’t be who I am today without you and I am blessed that no matter how far my journey may take me, I will always have a place to call my own at COP. It has allowed me to build friendships based on faith, and friendships I know will be constant throughout my life. One of the biggest impacts of camp has been devotions – they have helped grow my relationship with God and have given me a better understanding of him. In the time I’ve spent at camp little has changed with regards to the look of camp, but my appreciation toward it has. I’ve grown such an appreciation for the staff and volunteers that help make camp what it is. Not many of my friends outside of Mount Olivet can say that they have something so special that they share with their church and its members. However, I’m able to do that. No matter where I go in life, Cathedral of the Pines will always have a special place in my heart. – CHLOE GOODMAN So it might be cliché to say that Cathedral of the Pines is the best place on earth, but it truly is, because it shows us how God unconditionally loves everyone. When most other places simply teach that lesson, Cathedral of the Pines shows it through example. When you step off the bus, you leave behind the invasive drama and judgement that can be in the lives of so many of us. During my 9th-grade week, my counselor, Ben, helped to shape me into someone who cares about others, instead of worrying about what they may think of me. The people at camp also show me how valuable I really am, not just to others, but also to God. These are only a few examples, of the many ways camp has affected myself and others in an indescribably positive way. Cathedral of the Pines is truly the best place on earth. – EVAN KESSENS It’s very hard to imagine my life without COP, as it is a place I have grown so fond of. Through the years my role at the camp has changed from camper, to workstaffer, to counselor, but camp always seems to stay the same. Some of the activities vary depending on the age campers are up that week, but you can always count on playing “honey if you love me,” and you better be ready to play softball every day. It is because of camp that I am who I am. My faith has grown tremendously in the 10 years I’ve been going to camp. It has kept me involved in other church activities as well, which has facilitated even more growth. Though I’m sad this summer will be my last year counseling at COP I know camp isn’t going anywhere, and I will make sure to visit. More importantly though, I know that what camp has given me will stay with me for the rest of my life – and I am forever grateful for that. Over 170 students took their first step in their Confirmation journey at First Communion on Sunday, April 26. Comments overheard at First Communion: • “I liked First Communion because it was fun to be up there to take communion like a grown-up.” • “I liked the experience and I feel closer to God now.” Additionally, some of our 6th-graders previewed Junior High Alive service projects hosted by our junior high youth team (Geoff Arenson, Gina DeNucci, and Zach Spirov): CATHEDRAL OF THE PINES CAMP GEAR • Students attended a sample night of Adopt-A-Grandparent (AGP), a service project that pairs students with elderly residents of Mount Olivet Home and Careview Home. AGP meets on alternating Mondays during the school year. • In May, 6th-graders joined 8th-graders (along with the Youth Ministry and C&FM teams) at Feed My Starving Children. The students packed enough meals for 72 kids in El Salvador to eat for one year. WORSHIP WITH YOUR FAMILY THIS SUMMER! Counselors and families spent a sunshine-filled day at the Mount Olivet Conference & Retreat Center on April 25 at our Family Preview & Counselor Training Day for King’s Kids / Camp Summer of Service (S.O.S.). Parents and kids were able to get a feel for a typical camp day (and meal)! After morning training sessions, counselors were able to jump in and lead campersto-be through afternoon crafts and fun in the indoor pool. The day also included a tour of the grounds and parent Q&A. We hope your campers will JUMP INTO SUMMER at Mount Olivet! Visit http:// www.mtolivet.org/upcoming-events/summer-programs for details and registration. Questions: Kate Knutson 612.767.2284 [email protected]. Thank You to Midge Gonsior & Sandy Kuehn has been the Mount Olivet nursery coordinator since September 1989. Midge says her job was a gift from God and she is thankful for every day that she could be here. “Just to see the children come walking in with big smiles on their faces makes me happy enough to last until the next Sunday. I have seen so many babies grow up and now they have babies of their own. Most of all, thank you Mount Olivet!” SANDY KUEHN has been with the Mount Olivet preschool for 24 years. She loves all children. This is so obvious when you see how hard she works to find the perfect activities, prayers, materials, and songs for her classes – usually being the last one to leave at the end of the day. She loves the connections she has formed over the years with her former students and their families, and loves when they stop back to greet her. It is not unusual for her to receive an invitation to a high school graduation for a former preschooler! Our Mount Olivet staff will miss Sandy’s positive attitude, her kind heart, compassion, and her guitar playing ability! Midge and Sandy are retiring this spring. Mount Olivet thanks them for their years of service and will continue to pray for them and their families. MIDGE GONSIOR Children & Family Are you soooo bored? JUNE 2015 | 13 M O U N T O L I V E T C A P I T A L C A M P A I G N CELEBRATING THE COMPLETION OF PHASE I Building on a Strong Foundation – with Christ as Our Rock Elevator Approximately 15.1 million gallons of water were pumped to dig the footings for the elevator. Pumps operated 24/7 for three weeks. It took nearly three truckloads of concrete to pour the foundation for the elevator. The new elevator and new 1400 square foot lower narthex provide a welcoming atmosphere for members and guests. Entry All of the stone was laid by hand and was received from the same quarry as the church’s original stone. Fellowship Hall The Fellowship Hall was originally built in 1949. New technology and soundproofing have been added. The updated Fellowship Hall is now a light and bright space for large events such as the annual fashion show attended by over 450 church members and guests, and for our annual Stewardship dinners held in September. The original kitchen was 2575 square feet, the new kitchen is 3825 square feet. 120 yards of concrete were used for the new kitchen floor. The first dinner served in the new kitchen was the Lutefisk Dinner, which served 1500 people. More than 500 events are held each year. Kitchen The original lounge kitchen was built in 1959. During this update, a wall was moved to make room for a center island and dishwasher. The new lounge kitchen is now equipped to provide hospitality for church members and guests for years to come. Lounge Kitchen There are over 600 feet of 54-inch culverts under the parking lot to help with drainage of surface water. The parking lot is designed to minimize the flow of rainwater in the city storm sewer system. 13 volunteer gardeners helped plant more than 300 shrubs and 32 shade trees, including Cathedral Elms, in the east island beds.
