DOUBLE DAM
Lena Peterson, Women’s Open Division USATF Montana 50 Mile Champ.
The dam course on the west side of Hungry Horse Reservoir was closed this year due to road
reconstruction, so we broke in an alternate course along the east shore, which then swung over past the
finishing area and proceeded out-and-back to cross the dam twice, making it the double dam course.
Most runners found the double dam harder than the dam course, not surprising since the cut-across
from Mile 40 to 44 is hilly and then proceeds uphill from Mile 44 to 46. However, this did not pre-empt some
dam fine performances. Brian Vandenberg’s 5th win in a row was his dam personal Le Grizz record.
Charles Corfield broke the Men’s Seniors Course Record by over three minutes, a dam record that had
stood 15 dam years.
There were no more dropouts than usual. A record number of entrants finished. Dam straight.

The bowl, which features a grizzly bear scene, is being loaded up with gifts by her husband Dennis.
Chief Ten Bears awarded to Mary Ann Clute
Skookumtumtum (Steve) Heaps, the patriarch of Le Grizz runners and initial recipient of the Chief Ten
Bears honor, in consultation with Maynard Kicking Woman of the Blackfeet Nation, confirmed Mary Ann
Clute of Spokane for completion of 20 Le Grizz runs and spiritual worthiness to be honored for the
achievement. She received the Blackfeet spirit name of Coyote Woman. In the Blackfeet culture, a smart
person, such as one who teaches others, may be referred to as a coyote. The name was given in recognition
of Mary Ann’s career as a teacher and her lifelong charitable efforts.
Larry Carroll,
2003 Chief Ten Bears recipient,
finally received his spirit name.
He is now known as
Water Horse.
In the Blackfeet culture,
water runs fast and never stops.

and Debbie Gibson in the Masters Division.

Elkhorn entry fee waived, again, should they so elect.
Chief 10 Bears: Mary Ann Clute completed
her 20th Le Grizz run and earned the rank of Chief.
10 Bears: Andrew Matulionis, Gregg Martell,
Kevin Hebb, John Hallsten, Tim Marchant and
Charles Steele completed their 10th Le Grizz runs and
were awarded lumber that tells time.
10 Cubs: Mike Fraser provided course staff
support for the 10th time and was awarded a scaleddown 10 Bears clock.
